Does anyone have HTC Touch cruise style PhonePad ? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

Just wondering if anybody has managed to extract / acquire the HTC Touch Cruise type Phonepad for Hermes ? It looks extremely cool and easy to use.
If you havent seen it already check this out :
http://www.htc.com/www/product.aspx?id=1148
Go to number 4 - 'Office in your pocket' - which shows what Im after.
Cheers.

Its the touch screen keypad your after?

Check this out
I have found the answer and it lies right here on this forum :

I think that this is one of the best utilities I have ever downloaded for my Hermes. Very sleek and extremely practical.
Enjoy !

not quite as practical as that little thing called a keyboard which slides out from underneath... why do you guys buy a tytn that has a full qwerty keyboard (if it an english version of course) if you insist on touching the screen... why not buy a touch???

Re
There are some things only experience can teach you. When I bought this device I thought that I would be using the keyboard a lot BUT ...and this is a big BUT ... nothing beats the one handed operability of your average mobile phone. Not all of us will sit on the couch all day to make use of the sliding QWERTY keyboard. When you are on the move or in a rush its easier to pull your phone out of the holster and let one thumb do the job.
The HTC touch came out later and frankly is not an impressive device. The HTC Touch Cruise however is a top notch smartphone and that baby will probably be mine in June when my current contract expires

agree... big onscreen is good for txt on the go... but when you sit down to type an email.. full keyboard is best

Pro2 and Universal photo comparison

-not the best of photos, but you'll get the drift. If anyone wants better ones, just let me know
Nice . Not that the phones look like eachother, but still funny to see. People who have the universal rate it high.
What grades would u give to both phones concerning the useablitiy?
Just from looking at it, I would prefer the TP2 for typing and watching movies.
Strange thing btw, everyone says the screen is briliant and you can see everything, even in the sun. but on photo's it realy glares a lot.

I think it's because the screen dims after a few secs if you don't touch it. To save battery life.
Yeah it's cool to look at both machines but the second pic is a bit too blurred to see. Sorry...

I´m happy to find this thread!
As an proud Universal owner as primary buisness oriented device I have been waiting patiently to find the perfect replacement for my Uni, but 4 years later nothing worth to look.
TP2 is a good candidate as it has better specs in almost all, but still missing the form factor swiveling screen as Uni is really more like a micro lap top with phone than a phone with nice stuff like TP2.
I´m still no sure that TP2 can really be Uni succesor but at least is a posibility
I´ll wait till the ends of 09 to see what new models comming from HTC or Toshiba and then I´ll make my desicion on what device to buy to replace my Uni (If replaceble)
Cheers,

From all the threads I read that you have posted, you really do love your little Universal. He he he... Not saying it's a bad thing. I respect people like you, people that knows exactly what they want and won't jump and just buy anything that is new.
It really does take a lot of patients. You will make a good equity trader! Waiting for 4 years is a long time mate! Perseverance of finding the perfect handset is hard to hold.
Me, I am waiting to buy my first full QWERTY handset, the TP2. I hope the wait is worth it. Waiting for 4 months is already very hard, don't know how I can wait for 4 years. My hands will be so itchy, there will be no hands left.
For me, the Universal was my dream phone, but the form factor made it utterly impractical for day-to-day use for me.
Now that I have a TP2, I can finally enjoy a universal-class phone in a form factor that is practical.
The keyboard is SO much better than any other HTC device I have used before. Certainly it wipes the floor with the Kaiser keypad. I feel it is more responsive than the Universals.
The screen is just plain tasty, and touchflo has been massively improved.
I am pleased!

I-hate-you....NOT.
I'm on Sprint (CDMA) and can't wait to get my hands on this provided the rumors about a mid-June launch are true. Was going to get a Palm Pre but will be forced to change my plan to almost double, so TP2 it is.
How is the battery life, ear piece quality and does it get hot? I had the original Touch Pro for a month and took it back because battery life was horrid and it would heat up in the middle of the keyboard area bad after a few mins on Opera. Thanks.
Battery life so far is on par with my TyTNII. It's not great, but it's not terrible!
It hasn't got hot for me yet, but I've not really been pushing it.
Not made enough calls to comment on the quality of the earpiece yet, but the speaker is louder than my TyTNII (though sounds a bit more "echoey")
Main concern at the moment is there is no lens cover on the back shell as with most other phones. It's just a hole that leads through to the main camera sensor lens...hoping I don't scratch it!
Oooh and the ambient light sensor and g-sensor are cool!

Exactly the same for me, in 2005 when I bought the Wizard, my dream was the Universal. I bought it last year and keeped it only 6 month (unpractical).

True with the htc roms. False with the last radio. With last radio the battery life is excellent and with the last M2D and WM6.5 it terrible!!!
If the Pro 2 is something between TyTn2 and Universal, it's perfect for me. If the bluetooth stack works fine with my S705, doesn't matter for the FM radio (it's integrated in my S705).
I wanted it in Orange offer.

I once had a Uni, 'upgraded' to the TYTNII and am now waiting to see if my carrier will have the TP2. Whilst the newer phones out perform the Uni (for me!) I still wish that I could get something with the guts of a TYTNII in the casing of a Uni. That was a brilliant device.

As a fellow Universal afficionado, I share your view of how great a device it is, but apart from the RAM and size there's the GPS, higher connection speeds, screen & camera capability. These things might not be important to everyone, but made me make the change (still have the Universal though)
My Universal is long gone, Touch Pro 2 is the new King!

+1 for the Uni lovers.
I still haven't found a replacement for my Uni.
It is still by far the most practical business PDA / UMPC on the market.
I am waiting for a TP2 to arrive, and have been highly disappointed with the Raphael. (my fault for jumping in and buying one without doing my research first) I could never get used to the tiny 2.8 screen or the little keyboard.
My Uni still makes me smile every time I use it, it has never let me down (and I've had it since they were first released) robust, decent keyboard (with tilt and flip, so no issues of not being able to see the screen whilst typing comfortably) The only let down for my poor Uni is lack of GPS, with the 128mb ram upgrade I managed to make her last a bit longer as a primary device, but eventually had to get an "All-In-One " device that was more practical for everyday use.
I hope the Rhodium lives up to the reviews and has better reception amongst other things over the TP.
LONG LIVE THE UNI
I'll post some pics of my devices for peoples enjoyment (Still have a fully functional Wallaby at home too)
Cheers,
Beasty
Here's another post from a Universal fanboy
I've been using the Universal exclusively for almost 4 years now. Except for a big mistake I made when I ordered a Glofiish M800 and used that for a couple of days, got rid of that one real quick, and since I exchanged it for a Qtek 9000 I made that wrong right again. So I now own an MDA Pro a Qtek 9000 and... since 2 days, a Touch Pro 2.
I have to start out with saying that I personally always carried the Universal with me in my pocket. I Never had an issue with it's size. And as for the real reason I got a new device? Well you know, I want to see myself as a sort-of early adapter and since that Universal was way ahead of it's time, and I pre-orderd that device in spring 2005, I just wanted something new to play with. Why it took so long for anyone to release a device that even came close to the Universal is beyond me.
Personally I never really used a lot of local applications on the Uni. Except for the phone, sms and calender functions and navigation software the thing I used the most by far was remote desktop. The size of the screen, the resolution the AWESOME keyboard and the UMTS and Wifi connections really let me use my workstation and server to their full potential, ANYWHERE in the world.
While I did flash the device with new versions of Windows Mobile that I found on this forum I never really owned a device with TouchFlo on it. Obviously I did play around with TouchFlo on devices that friends and colleagues owned.
After having used the device for about a day these are the things I noticed when I compare it to our beloved Uni's:
TP2 Pro's:
-Size: Like I said, the size never bothered me, but as I was used to the Universal the Touch Pro2 is TINY
-Resolution: 800x480 beats 640x480, especially when using Remote Desktop.
-HSDPA
-Internal GPS
-Conference call option in TouchFlo (which someone on this forum has probably hacked into the Uni already as well)
-Just having something new already
-Audio call quality is higher
-Keyboard is almost as good as the Uni's
TP2 Cons:
-While I never used it, I just don't get why there's no mini-jack connection
-No flash: While I used the flash on the Universal as a flash light most of the time and not as a flash for the camera I just don't get why they couldn't at least put a LED light on the device.
-No TAB-key on the keyboard. I really miss this when filling in forms online.
-The slide-and-tilt formfactor is ok, but not as good as what the Uni does. When the screen on the TP2 is fully tilted It's difficult to press the number keys (top row). Also when I carried the Uni in my pocket the screen was always well protected. I guess it takes some getting used to as well.
-Keyboard is ALMOST as good as the Uni's

Every new year comes I think if HTC would do again something on the form factor of Universal: A micro lap top with phone functions!! but nothing...

Pro 2 or Hero?

I just recently bought a Palm Pre and returned it, hated it! So I bought the touch pro knowing it cam out almost a year ago (impulse buy). Now I am just curious, I know the touch pro 2 is coming to sprint, but its rumored that the hero will be out for sprint later this year, possibly December. Which one should i wait for?
i think major difference is the qwerty keyboard so decide if you need this or not.

+ one is android and other WM, usually a big difference depending on what you like.
That will depend on what is for you need the device
TP2: Buissness oriented device with the second best physical keyboard (1st is from Universal)
Hero: Multimedia oriented device with an OS tha promises a lot in the future, by now it needs to grow up and madurate
Welcome to my world, all these damn phones coming out, Hero I like however things I dont like are the shape, imagine that in your pocket? "Are you pleased to see me or is that a HTC Hero in your pocket?" and as the person above mentioned, lack of keyboard.
White doesnt stay clean for long either.

Haha, yeah I know, keyboard is a big deal to me. It's just WM seems to disappoint me a lot. Although I have high hopes for 6.5, I'm thinking sprint is waiting for 6.5 to release to touch pro 2, it would make it all that better!
But still, functionality versus a keyboard, I don't know! haah
I know what you mean about WM, but HTC have done a great job of masking the dull and boring monolike OS with Touchflo from what I have seen and WM 6.5 looks like a vast improvement at least visually.
Personally I think you, like me, would probably get bored of Android and the touch screen keypad would drive me nuts in the end.
I tried typing on an Iphone 3GS yesterday to get a (improved) idea of what a Diamond 2 or Hero might be like and with my fingers theres no chance I would type quickly on that ever, it would be like trying to look behind you without moving your head.
TP2 is the way to go, however the Omnia Pro is coming soon too, but then the Nvidia Tegra chipset powered HTC HD sequal is comign - I cant decide either, phones are like PC graphics cards these days.

the shape is virtually the same as the G1, and I've never heard anyone complain about any discomfort when they put the G1 in their pocket. and there may not be a hardware KB, but as far as onscreen KB's go, it looks like the Hero's will be one of best so far. and I like how the screen is capacitive and thus supports multi touch.
personally, I'm getting the TP2 when it comes out on AT&T. I'm also planning on picking up an unlocked Hero (unless it finds its way to the states, specifically AT&T). just want something else to play around with
Please buy both. Both has different strength, features & abilities. Both are totally different. I hope i will get one if god willing
For me it will be the one with the biggest screen & WM on it...TP2!

Yeah but the hero has a capacitive screen right? or am I wrong about that? Im actually not sure but I would think that it does because all the other android ones by HTC ara capacitive
Edit: I checked and im pretty sure its capacitive but I just browsed through search results

The same question has been haunting me lately too. I've been waiting forever for the TP2 to come to AT&T and now I see this. If they end up having release dates close together I'm thinking I might go with the hero. The main thing that will bother me is the lack of keyboard since I'm coming from a Kaiser (Tilt).

Agreed, but there's one big difference. You can get an upgrade discount on phones once every 1.5 years, otherwise you're paying out your A$$. Graphics cards are always the same (usually relatively lower) price.

Yeah you seem like you have the same thoughts as I do. I think you're right about getting tired with the android phone. I love messing with WM and modding it. I know you can with android, but it will have its limits. The thing about touch pro 2 not being a capacitive touch screen, it bums me out and makes me ask why they won't do this with WM yet. I can say they have been improving their resistive screens, big difference from the mogul to the touch pro, so I hope they can do that again. I am definitely leaning toward the touch pro 2. Does anyone know why they won't go with the capacitive screen on WM or touch pro 2?

This is exactly why I'm shying away from the TP2 and leaning towards the Hero or the Magic. The sheer idea of there being opportunities where I might need to resort to the stylus are completely holding me back. Guess I'll have to actually play with one before I make my decision; but, since using the capacitive touchscreen (iphone/G1), I'm not sure I can go back.

The resistive screen is one of the selling points for me, especially one as finger-friendly as TP2s. Best of both worlds. I get easy navigation without having to constantly sheath and unsheath the stylus, but I can use a compact and conveniently tucked away stylus when needed. I very much doubt I'll ever need it for the basic interface, but with some apps I'll want it. My Palm TX has been my primary Chinese-English dictionary for some time (before it, my Palm T|T and m500 served the same purpose), and the same software is available for WinMo. I'd just as soon use a stylus for character recognition. For that matter, I'd just as soon use a stylus for handwritten memos. I imagine capacitative screen users get by on both fronts just fine, but for me, I'm glad there's a good resistive screen still available.

So far with my TP2, I have not used the stylus at all and I am a pretty heavy business user, thats emails, facebook, youtube, general browsing and posting on forums, stock, sms.
Whats more I have yet to use the actual qwerty keyboard aswell, I find the touch one good enough everytime unless I'm typing a huge email or document.
My advice is go and actually look at the Diamond 2 and TP2 in the flesh, it is totally different to looking at it on the internet, it really is a quality product.

sorry to burst your bubble, sir, but the TP2 doesn't support multi touch. that luxury is reserved for devices that have a capacitive display. and while the TP2 feels like it's capacitive, it isn't. the Hero, on the other hand, IS capacitive and therefore the screen supports multi touch

Should i Get the Touch Pro 2

Hi All,
Please help me make my mind up,
i have read alot of good things and some bad things about the TP2,
The thing is i already have the HD and it is Great... (great ROM's out there)
But now i have the opportunity to get the TP2 as a work phone,
Now i can't make my mind up if i should just stay with the HD or get the TP2.
Please let me have some of your guys feedback as to the things you like about the TP2 and the things you dislike...
I know that the only real difference is the KBD,
But how is the build quality and the speed of the phone.
Really anything you can tell me about the TP2 would be great.
How is the TP2 after some use, i have heard some bad things about screen wobble...
and how is the slide after some use...
Thanks in advance
Hi
I have been using this phone (unlocked HTC version) since more than a month now and the build quality is awesome. I am comparing it with following (I have used in past)
• Imate kjam
• O2 xda trion (htc tytn I)
• Htc tytn II (tilt one)
• Touch pro (for a week or so, used my cousin’s )
• iPhone (I dared to try and returned in just 7 days due to it being a toy and not a professional communication device http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3981278&postcount=23 )
I can confirm that sliding mechanism is ok so far, I compose a lot of emails and sms and this is one of the reasons I always prefer devices with keyboard (except for my iPhone experience). I don’t use its tilt feature much but occasionally and so far it is working perfectly. Further on tilting, it was a bit stiff in the beginning and you would have to put a bit of extra pressure to tilt it up and down, but now (after using it for a month) it has become less stiff.
Needless to say, the keyboard on this device is the best so far on any winmo device (imho). The second best QWERTY I liked (after tp2) was of O2 xda trion (htc tytn I).
To be honest, there is one thing I miss on tp2 and that is “D-pad”, since I was very much used to using D-pad, I miss it the most, but if you are moving from HTC Touch HD, it should not be a problem (have never used HD, but this is what occurs to me).
The other good thing about this device is the “looks” of it. It looks real nice and not just a black brick in your hand.
The speakers for conf call is also awesome and having dual microphone (one for noise cancelling) it really is what HTC claims it to be "Straight Talk"
Internet browsing experience should be similar to what it is on HD with an added ease of use using zoom bar / slider. However it zooms the page from middle and u’ll either have to pan for viewing the desired portion of page or double tap as you would on HD (assuming you are using opera)
The camera is of an “ok” quality not as good as one would expect from such a high end device. If you are too much into taking pictures and making videos (video is at 20 fps, to the best of my knowledge and is acceptable), you might want to consider taking a test drive before you invest.
Email experience, nothing to say about it, it’s the best on winmo.
If there is anything specific that you would want to know, plz ask and I’ll try to respond.
Regards,
Siraj.

Keyboard is a worthy exchange if you message or type alot more than you use the headphone jack.
The keyboard is in fact, THE BEST IN THE WORLD right now (actually the unlocked or T-mobile versions are the best).
The Verizon and Telus Touch Pro2's will have an EARPHONE JACK at the bottom of the phone.
The build quality is excellent, except the sliding mechanism has a little bid of press. Therefore some units are very loose and make people angry.
The Touch Pro2 will make you realize it's the best Windows Mobile phone to use, except the lack of the headphone jack is stopping it from reaching the tops in our criteria for best phones.

Do a search and you´ll find all that you need to decide
p.s: The keyboard is not the best in the world...tough it´s nice
Read the other same subject threads, and then go for it

The POSITIVE Rhodium thread :)

So many ppl stating facts what Rhodium can't do or has flaws at, so i wanted to say I LOVE my Rhodium and heres what it can do:
* Go on line anywhere and watch hilarious vids on YouTube
* text as easy as sending a message on e.g. MSN
* speaking MSN: be on MSN on the go
* watch movies in superb quality (avi, divx, xvid, you name it...)
* write emails with natural qwerty keyboard ... intuitively
* use the web like on a desktop: watch sites, download...
* have awsome speaker quality an listen to music and phone calls with my hands behind my head haha
* being able to actually download an app for any need
* so many customization features
* having the most awesome kick-ass display I've seen so far on a mobile
* forgot: It looks GORGEOUS !!!
----------------------------------------------------------
Bottom line: If I could, I'd get engaged to my TP2
anyone feelin' me`?

Yep! I agree with you totally. But look after it carefully. Never remove the stickers on the side as the back of the screen will scratch your keyboard. Also, protect your screen well. Use a proper case that will protect your screen from unwanted pressure.
I didn't look after mine well enough. I do agree it is one of the best phones I have owned and it's sad I had to depart with it.

There is a thread about that somewhere... The sd card thing.
Yeah that device is great .... I dont need to take a netbook with me. Love the keyboard,
I bought Coreplayer for all videos, this software is great.
I'm not a microsoft member but with such device you dont miss anything or?
telephone quality is very fine, speakers loud and clear.
Skype works only with the speakers, but its like hands free with good quality.
damn HTC build great devices
my last devices:
mda compact
htc kaiser
neonode n2
touch pro2
I'm in on the Touch Pro 2 love...This phone has been great so far. If I were to complain it's really just some of the things I was used to that were shut off on this, like auto suggestion. But thanks to this good forum that's not a real problem, turned it back on. Videos I have filmed with it have been fantastic. I watched Resevoir Dogs yesterday never lost my card. I do need to get a screen protector but it's been pretty tough so far.
My friend and I were looking up a part number for my car. My friend whipped out his brand new Dell Mini 10, and I broke out the Rhodium. After getting the page loaded on SkyFire, he was still waiting for FireFox to load up. WinMo 1. XP 0.

Are all versions of the TP2 susceptible to the back of the screen scratching the keyboard (if stickers are removed)? It looks like some versions (Original HTC, Sprint, Verizon and AT&T versions) have a slight ridge/seam around the perimeter of the kepboard, while the T-Mobile USA version does not have this ridge/seam. Does this slight design change affect the susceptibility of the keyboard getting scratched?
Most of what the OP describes I've enjoyed since my first WM device, the HTC Blue Angel. Yea, that was a long while ago. Since then I've owned the Wizard, the Herald, the Kaiser and now the Rhodium.
There are limitations, thats true, and I've lived with them since the BA. But the pros outweigh the cons by leaps and bounds and the level of customization on an open system like WM is absolutely amazing. The versatility of the OS, despite its shortcomings, is what has kept me in the WM realm since 2005.
I once had the MDA compact or mini as O2 called it...
And that one really kicked ass I thought. Missed out GPS though (got a BT mouse, took hours to connect and get a fix, worked though - funny eh?)
Then I bought the XDA Orbit 2 and that lil' bugger really pissed me off! NOTHING worked on that co%&su&$*r !!
And now- the TP2 seems to me like for the first time these phones actually work like they are supposed to.
Love you, lil' TP2
AO
and remeber guys: The P O S I T V E TP2 thread
Things I love about my HTCP2:
1) I can facebook on the go... just downloaded the new app especially for TP2 and I like it more than the built in page.
2) It fits in my pocket now. Coming from a Dopod900, this is so much lighter
3) I found the perfect case for it (from golla). My dopod900 with my piel frama case was like my purse - it had everything so I was disappointed with the HTCP2 case I got with the box coz there's no place for my credit cards etc. I found one from golla and I love it (case is actually for mp3 players and other devices). Im still waiting for the piel frama case price to go down...
4) It has a place to insert a handle. This was my frustration with the D900. Im currently using a Nintendo Wii Remote strap as my phone strap. It's sturdy and adds protection (the hinge prevents it from sliding off my wrist)
5) It's my blingbling. Im not into jewelry so much (i dont even wear a watch) so I come off as plain when I go out, but when I whip out my HTCTP2, it changes everything...
Love my TP2
I love this device! It can do nearly everything I could want while I am mobile. It's like a mini computer - oh and its also a phone!

Touch Pro 2 or HD2?

Hi,
I live in Sydney, Australia.
I've owned a HTC Topaz until i sold it to my dad to upgrade to a better HTC phone.
I'm tossing up between waiting until the 11th of November and ordering the HTC HD2 from www.clove.co.uk or to purchase a Touch Pro 2 from ebay.
I just require general advice on which would be a better investment.
Background:
Engineering Student, requiring a smartphone that can organise a busy lifestyle and last a few years without hassles.
Thanks,
Harry.
HD2 without a doubt. plus the specs garantee that it wont be outdated in a while... unlike the TP2 since a 528 CPU will only take you so far
depends if you need a Keyboard mostly
Thanks Mike, that was one hell of a quick response.
After the Topaz I was itching for a keyboard, but i think you're right.
The snapdragon processor will last quite some time and it outweighs my need for a keyboard.
I'm sure HTC can fit a decent touch keyboard on a 4.3 inch screen.
Plus if you're ever doing major work on it, you can just buy a bluetooth keyboard for it.
Still don't know about the capacitive touch screen. Most devices I've played with that have them seem to be too sensitive and at the same time less accurate.
I wish they were releasing the HD2 in the US.
Could i get one more piece of advise please - which site would be the best to buy the HD2?
Reasonable postage + pricing would be great.

the keyboard on the TP2 is great...have used onscreen keyboards for the last 5 years and now would not go back ...if you do a lot of text input (emails etc) then go a TP2 plus the business slant is great for organising work and play... the real question should be, want a real keyboard or not... the speed of text input will out play any gain by the faster processor of the HD2... now a HD2 with a TP2 type keyboard & under 170 gms... that would be a killer device
No hardware kwyboard
Not an option for me
TP2 is the best hardware keyboard device to this date
I have the TP2 from Telstra and really like the phone. It has the keyboard which is the main reason for me choosing it. Apart from this, the phone's screen is big and bright. And the performance is snappy. What I don't like is the Telstra theme. But I have changed to a Hero theme which I am very pleased with. So all in all, I am happy with my choice.
HD2 is just a TP2 with out a keyboard (as bloggers who have it are saying)
Ok you get a more ram with the HD2 and a thin device (kinda)
But you pretty much just between Keyboard + touchscreen or no keyboard and full touchscreen
at the end of the day its up to you. pick what you want.. remember your on a forum with users who have both devices and going to stand behind they phone and defend it so all you going to hear is users with HD2 saying "GET THE HD2" and users with TP saying the same thing
actually , i use the hardware kwyboard rarely...
but it looks cool , so i choose TP2
HD2 its in a league of its own. Its super fast and responsive. If you want to have great performance and impress your friends go for the HD2. I want the TP2 for the keyboard.
PS: The HD1 has the requirements for an upgrade to Windows Mobile 7, so that might be a plus too.
