Remove Start menu background - P3300, MDA Compact III ROM Development

Hi I was wondering how to remove Start menu background image. I have just finished making some icons for my plugins and would like to make Start menu all black if possible.
Also is there any way of changing the background image of the Comm manager (10 button) as mine is green but I would like it blue to match the today screen?

Start menu's background picture is stwater.gif. Try deleting it or paint it to black... I didn't try it myself but it could work.
Maybe you could change the comm manager's background picture with "resource hacker".
Sorry there is no practical knowlege here. Just some suggestions.

commanager's background is p_bg.png editing it works tried it myself

I cant seem to find p_bg.png anywhere using total commander. Im guessing its located in \Windows directory? Any other ways (or different files for each version of comm manager)?
As for editing stwater: this works fine, but it also changes the today background. What I would ideally like is the background of start menu to be differet than the today screen background (if this is even possible).

I confirm: Start menu's background picture is stwater.gif. Try to overwrite it by Resco Explorer.
About Commanager, if you have original, the background image is stored in commmanagerres.dll.You can manage it with resource hacker.
Only if you use an additional Commmanager (like Shaps 6 btn for example) you have img in \windows.

Yeah I already managed to overwrite the stwater.gif, but this also (for some reason) changed the today screen background (today background is an image, not part of the .tsk theme)

You can try to make a tsk like you want. This is the simply way.
Sometimes (i don't know why) with some coocked rom, i verified that for some reasons the OS invert stwater and tdwater.
This strange anomaly happen also with a tsk if used from customization tool at first start.

My current WM6 ROM won't install themes either.
Don't know if they did something to make them incompatible but I get the same problem you have.
\WINDOWS\ folder is where they should be placed...

I've seen what you're talking about. If you're running Windows Vista and trying to copy files to your device, it won't let you browse to the \WINDOWS\ folder to do anything.
Try using File Explorer and copy the file from wherever you have placed it and paste the copy in the \WINDOWS\ folder. It may also work in your My Documents folder, but I'm not 100% on that. The \WINDOWS\ folder should work though so that it shows up as an option in your "Today" options.
I use one that's got a Windows Vista Ultimate feel to it and like it a lot.... it's called BLGLOSS.TSK and I hope that my file attachment worked! I'm still quite the n00b at this stuff but have been madly cooking roms with Pandora, etc.... good stuff.
So basically what your saying is the automated install when you run a .tsk from any location no longer happens and you have to manually put it in a system folder for it to show up in the theme's list?
EDIT:
Yup apparently that is the issue! Theme's don't copy themselves when you run them from a memory card or wherever anymore.
If you don't fancy your themes clogging up your /WINDOWS/ folder (and who does?), they work just as well when dropped in the root of your /STORAGE CARD/. Note, if you put them in a folder in the storage card they won't get picked up under the Today setting, you must just drop them in the root.
With my themes in my Storage card's root, and my ringtones in my Storage Card's My Documents folder, the only file I have to copy to Windows now after a reset is the one I use for my alarm!
Personally, my favourite theme wesbite is here: http://www.pocketpcthemes.com/category.aspx?CategoryID=9&ttype=11 but make sure you've got "WM5 QVGA" selected in the drop down at the top or you'll end up with ones that don't work on landscape.

so wait were u able to make ur phone install the theme u wanted after you moved it manually to the windows folder or the root of ur storage ?
ok, i got the themes to show up under Setting->Today, but the theme doesnt look like how its suppose to....the theme that i posted on the original post shows a very big time on the today screen, when i set it on mine, the time doesnt even show up....only things like the background change....any ideas?
Fastindy, I think you may have got themes on PPCs mixed up with those on Smartphones. When you change a theme on a Smartphone, it affects the picture on the Today screen, as well as what info is shown on it and where. This means a Smartphone theme will have clocks, SMS counters, etc built into it.
A PPC theme, on the other hand, affects only the background picture, top and bottom bar colour scheme, and the Start drop down background picture. What info is actually displayed on the screen is determined by Today plug-ins - these are the things that show the clocks, SMS counters, calendar appointments, and so on.
On the Schaps ROM you linked to in the first post, the clock showing on the today screens is the HTC Home plug-in. It's available here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=327646 but I don't know if this is the newest/best version as personally I don't use (takes up too much of my screen for my liking).
Hope that helps.
if you go into folder options and tell it to show hidden files folders and drives, and untick hide protected operating system files then you will be able to see the windows folder from your computer.

Creating a Complete Pocket PC Theme

Everyone,
I am not sure if this has been created or not but since many have asked me about my theme, I thought I would compile a quick tutorial on creating a matching, dazzling theme that will include the load screen, Today screen, Dialer and Comm Manager (optional Slide2Unlock). As time goes on, I would like to add to this and make it a complete tutorial.
Please keep in mind that for those who operate on different carriers, phones, and software, you will likely have slightly different variations: Sprint users often have animated startups. Some Comm Managers will vary in style but most most of the file names will likely be the same. Hopefully this How-To will also help you get started off in the right direction in case your particular application is not discussed or found here...
First you will need several programs and I will provide links to all of them below. But before we begin cutting, pasting and installing, always makes ure to save backups of all original files to be modified to a folder on your device or PC that is well labeled so that all of these original files can be re-installed. Soft resetting will alsom enable just about all of the changes you make and should be seen in the next boot-up.
The programs...
1. Activesync - PC-loaded program necessary for transfering the files to and from your PC & PDA.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobi...ivesync45.mspx
2. ThemeGenCE - PC-loaded program that will allow you to create a Today theme and either load from or to your PDA.
http://www.freewareppc.com/misc/themegence.shtml
3. RCMod - PPC application for modifying the text, top & bottom bars on your PDA.
http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/rcmod.shtml
4. M$ Paint program or equivelant. A design program that can be used to create ot modify pictures, etc. I use Paint or you can use this...
http://www.getpaint.net/
5. Tiermann's Dialer Skinning Tool - Terrific PC-loaded program for creating all kinds of dialer skins for your device. Many thanks to Tiermann for the great app!
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread...ht=dialer+skin
We will start with the start up screen...
In my PPC \windows directory is a file called Welcomehead.96.png. This is one of the start-up screens that I will modify. Create a 240 x 320 pixel non-animated image, save it as a .png and name it Welcomehead.96.png. (Note, create ALL images, files, etc and remove any read-only, archive properties, etc) Now place this new image in the \My Device directory on your phone. Using a PPC resource tool such as Total Commander, SKTools, etc, copy the your new image from the \My Device\welcomhead.96.png location to the \Windows location. You will recieve a prompt asking if you want to continue overwriting the existing. Click yes. This part is now complete.
Now for the Today Screen...
Create a theme using ThemGenCE. It will take some time using the program before you understand the full capabilities of this program but the rewards later are very satisfying. The utilities in this app are straight forward and loading to & from your device will become a snap. Again, I create a base background using a paint program and load it through ThemGenCe where it can be further manipulated.
Once you have a theme designed and loaded to your device, it's time to get that matching task bars and text to match. With RCMod installed on your PPC device, click on the options you want and highlight your color preference.
Optional...
If you have the Slide2Unlock program installed on your device, create (2) 240 x 320 pictures; one in portrait and one in landscape. Save both as jpgs. Name the portrait: wallpaper.jpg and the landscape: wallpaperL.jpg. Delete the (2) existing images in the \My Device\Program Files\S2U2\gfx folder place your new ones here. Optional clocks can be installed in \My Device\Program Files\S2U2\clocks folder and aptly renamed so that the Slide2Unlock app recognizes them. Soft reset once complete.
Now for the dialer...
Using Tiermann's program on your PC, load a background image and create both a portrait & landscape dialer theme. A little tweaking & experimenting will yield fantastic results as Tiermann's program is option-laden. Once you have created your theme, save it and the program will package your theme into a .cab files which you install just like any .cab. It save the .cab files to the desktop on my PC. Install on your device and soft reset.
And lastly, the Comm Manager...
The Comm Manager will have to be designed manually... that is there are no programs for easily computing a end result which can be easily installed. However, the files (at least on my device) are easily obtainable.
In the \Windows directory, locate and save to your PC using activesync these files:
L_BG - landscape background of your Comm Manager
P_BG - portrait background of your Comm Manager
Status_On - icon indicating the on status
Status_On_Disable - icon indicating status not used
Status_Off - icon indicating off status
Status_Off_Disable - icon indicating status not used
Again, using the trusty and durable paint program of choice, modify these .png images to your liking. Remember to save whatever you create to .png files and rename so that it will overwrite the existing. Overwrite the older with the newer using Total Commander or simply use Activesync and drop the new files over the older ones.
Finished...
You should now have 4-5 screens from startup to operation that express your favorite team, hobby, passion & liking that is seen on just about every screen. The more you tweak, install, remove and repeat, the more masterful you will become in creating a truly unique and thorough theme. This was done on a Alltel PPC-6800 running WM6 but I think this will work on many devices running both WM5 & 6. Please post results & comments here.
Everyone:
Please help to make this as complete as possible. I will update this as my own experiences grow but I would like much to recieve everyone's participation to make this as complete as possible. I will try to add some pictures later. Many thanks to everyone here and at PPCGeeks for their time & support and I hope this will provide others out there a good starting point...
i dont get it
i made a theme but i cant figure out how to get it on my phone
when i drag the two files to the phone, and click on them it saysthere is no application associated with "(theme name)" run app first then open within app

Adding folders to the start menu

how do you create folders in the start menu to store items...that way you don't have to scroll down forever. Ive seen this used in some ROMS...i dont really want to flash a rom so is there any way to do this?
Go to Windows\Start Menu\Programs\ and create the folders there.

If you are using the Stock Rom, it may be worth it to maybe get a different file explorer than the stock winmo.
I use Resco File Explorer, the demo version is free and all features work for 14 days I think, then after that, most of teh normal features still work, very useful and far mo finger friendly than the stock file explorer or even total commander that some custom roms come with.
if you go into HKLM\Security\Shell\StartInfo\Start you'll see keys corresponding to your folder names. Add an "Icon" string value there having the location of a png image if you want to make a custom folder icon. I've not found a way other than restarting to activate the new folder icon (yet)...
I'm in the stock ROM (really like the quality of this vs. the stock Fuze rom) and in Windows 7 trying to reorganize the start menu icons.
For some reason, windows is telling me I don't have permissions to make these changes. Anyone have an idea why?
Thanks!

I tried this and it works in the full screen showing under the startmenu but in the app quickmenu it does not show the custom folder icon; however the custom folder icons for standard folders such as Games does show a nice icon in quickmenu. Any ideas..
Sorry, I'm not a manilla user so can't help w/quickmenu icons.

the quickmenu icons are independent from manilla. http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-quickmenu-v2-7.html

Howto Uninstall Max Manila?

I tried installing Max manila on my TP2, but I must have used the wrong version. When the phone boots, it gets stuck at the "Touch here to launch HTC Sense" prompt.
I can get into the programs menu, but not into Settings. How can I uninstall this CAB if I can't get into Settings?
Tried looking at the original thread, but at 96 pages, the signal-to-noise ratio is just too low, and you can't find anything! Hence this new thread.
I really don't want to have to do a hard-reset!
if it is getting stuck at starting manilla you should still be able to click on the windows start button where you can get into the settings/home sections. From here untick sense and restart the device so it starts properly without starting sense. Remove manmanilla from remove programs option and then reinstall the working version.
Alternatively reflash your rom.

In WM6.5, there is no settings entry on the start menu. There must be a series of steps for deleting files and changing registry sessions that could be done manually if only one knew how.
There is a settings shortcut in WM 6.5, however in some roms the chefs have this shortcut pointing to the manila settings tab instead of WM settings dir. Obviously if manila won't load then this shortcut won't work for you anyway. Unfortunately I have no idea how to get that settings shortcut back on the start menu and working for you :/ You could use Total Commander to manually delete all of the files altered by MaxManila and then soft reset - your phone will then restore the rom's original files. There are a lot of files in MaxManila though, so it might take a while to hunt them all down. Use aiCabExplorer to open MaxManila's cab file and get the names of all the files to delete.

I tried renaming all the files and registry keys obviously associated with MaxManila, with no luck. I don't know how the files in the CAB get installed, but I searched for half a dozen of them and they were nowhere to be found.

TC for the registry, Resco for the files, but I have it set to show all types.
Well I've just checked - I can see and delete all of the MaxManila files in my windows dir except the homeservice.dll using TC. Don't know what else to suggest; there must be a way to get back the settings shortcut (?)
To get settings, change registry as shown:
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Shell\StartInfo]
"HideSettings"=dword:00000000

[Q] Changing Background for Menu Items on Rosie

I can change the icons in a rosie by editing the Rosie.apk, but the background is white and I'd like it to be black transparent. What files do I need to edit to get the black background (or any color) with white text?
Thanks for any help.
If you use ninjamorph, select the rosie.apk, I BELIEVE it should be the /res folder, find the img of the image you want to replace, then swap it in. Though backup before hand.
Right, I understand the process, but there is no background.png file (or whatever it is). I need to know either the name of the file or if that particular background is in a different apk suh as systemUI or framwork, etc...
...anyone?
