SPB Phone Suite Skinning - Windows Mobile Software Development

Hey. I was wondering if anyone has created any skins for SPB Phone suite (1.2 or other). I searched this forum (and others) and do not seem to see any posts about it. I know the dat files are password zipped, but in my searches I have turned up the zip's password (it's 59s04bzq). I have created a set which I thought would work, and frustratingly it keeps just creating blank icons (transparent) on my today screen. If anyone wants to work on this, I could offer what little knowledge I have. Thanks!

Have you saved the files as 16 bit - R5 G6 B5 - .bmp file??

i been looknig a long time for spb phone suite skins! i did an intense search and i found only one skin online on a russian site. it was a a bunch of dat files that i just dragged in my phone suite directctory and it worked flawless. the icons are just black and grey they are really plain but beter looking than the stock ones..care to share with us some icon sets??????????? or u can just tell me how to make them

I try to find SPB Phone Suite skin too. I find that russian forum and the skin. I try in my PPC and look good to me. Here, the bottom line with black buttons:

But the "Photo Speed Dial" is not skinned yet... And this way the skin is not perfect.
Ok. The skin files placed in the program main folder in ".dat" files. Copy the files to PC and rename it to ".zip" then open it with some archiver program. The files are password protected! Here's the password:
59s04bzq
Inside all packages find some ".bmp" files and that files contains the icons. Someone with graphic experience making this kind of icons is make a skin to the program.

I'm assuming it's like Mobile Shell, so make sure you re-encrypt the files again, and replace the .dat on your phone.

When adding photo contacts, Is there a way to place a name instead of the blank silhouette? I.E. Placing Dad over the image with test. I am not a fan of the drop-down screen it offers when the person is highlighted.

My first Icon Set
EDIT: I just realized that the icons are not in the correct order. I will have to add a new one later. Also, the new icon set is only for the 32x32 size so I will have to change this for the 64x64 and 16x16 set as well. The one attached does work if you use it with Spb Mobile Shell.
I have finally figured out how to change the icons for the phone suite profiles. I have made a couple of sets of icons but so far this is my favorite. If anyone has any other ideas for me I would appreciate it. If you would like for me to make some icon sets let me know, I would be glad to help out. I have also attached a copy of this icon set for others to use. Just rename the file from .zip to .dat and place in the Spb Phone Suite folder replacing the exiting file.
Enjoy

Excellent job webguy!
Could you include the original icons in your file too, or is there any limitation in the number of icons?
Personally, I prefer the meeting and car icons from the original set. I also like the bell icon.

Phone Suite Icons to big!
Hello i try to explain my problem in english, but because my english isn't very improved i also post in german, i hope this is ok.
I have a problem with the Size of the phone suite icon.
I use the Skinsuite from imarche.net - more infos you get here.
I try since some days to decrease the size of the to big phone suite icons.
The icon (red arrow) is to big to see it completely on the screen.
I extracted the BMP File from profile.dat of my program folder of my PDA (HTC Touch HD):
the included pics are to big with 64x64 pix.
I tryed to resize the whole pic, to rename a smaller pic with the original name and at least I tryed to put some smaller pics (48x48 pix) into the original bmp.
There for I used this Guide from this Thread where the skinning of Spb Mobile Shell pics is described
This is the modified pic:
But I always get a blank icon position without any pic.
Has sombody from the Professionels here a hint what i've done wrong?
Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure if there is a limit to the number of icons that can be used, 12 is what was on the original, so I'm guessing that would be the max. I'll see if I can put something together with those icons later today.

[how to] Dialer skinning (in progress...)

I noticed that a lot of people like another dial skin instead of the standard blue WM5 dialer. There are some problems with the current custom skins available on different WM5 Phones.
So I like to start a "how to" on dialer skinning, so more people developing skins for different kinds of phones.
I would like to invite everybody with some experience to help me complete this thread, so it becomes a sort of Wiki on dialer skinning.
I would also like to invite "graphic designers" to create a database with skins.
Oke let's start:
Edit the DLL
Edit the DLL
If you want bigger buttons you have to edit the DLL
Tooling:
- Resource Editor / Restorator
- signtool.exe (included in .NET 2.0 SDK)
- Certificate (I use the SDKSamplePrivDeveloper)
Steps:
1. First you have to find the right DLL, in most cases it's the phcanrc.dll in the Windows map.
2. Open the file in a resource editor like Resource Tuner or Restorator. In the dialog map you find the different dialogs (portrait and landscape) wich you can edit, in the edit mode you can modify the fields on the dialog (unfortunately you cannot see the edges of the fields, temporarily use of borders can help).
Probably it's better to define a standard size and position for the buttons, so the dll's and graphics can be reused by all our developed skins and dialers.
Momentarily I use the next positions:
Portrait (top-left corner of button)
horizontal positions: 2, 81, 160
vertical positions: 84, 122, 158, 194, 230
button size: 78x35
3. Signing the DLL
The DLL has to be signed before you can use it, I use the signtool.exe from the .NET 2.0 SDK and the SDKSamplePrivDeveloper certificate in the same SDK.
Start the signtool in wizard mode using "signtool.exe signwizard" -> select the dll file -> custom signtype -> select the certificate from file -> browse for the corresponding key file.
I leave other settings default.
DLL Ready.
Hmm.. it would be a very interesting discussion.. And I have a small question.. Is it possible to extract the part of Phone application from Eten Roms and add it to MDA roms??.. It is the part where you can change the skins.. http://smartmania.mobilmania.cz/images/recenze/EtenM700/captures/06.jpg
here is the image sets, I used for my SmartDial BigKey Grass (see post).

I don't know if that's possible... I should say try before you die...
Hmm.. it would be good if you were to state specifically that the skinning app you are refering is the Ethen skin. There are the other dial pad skinning, which I think the buttons are a bit small to my liking. I use the Ethens.
BTW, since we are in this topic. I used to have an idea to 'do' my own skin (Ethen dialpad), but I find getting the buttons to be exact and save to the specific names and such, is a hassle. It would be good, if there were to be a way that I can have 2-3 skin for each screen where you have the 'release' and 'press' of buttons, in calls, etc, that one can easily Photoshop them. Then, there were to be a program to just cut, rename and save them, and possibly generate a preview as well.
Is there software that can do that? I can do that in Java (my C got rusted away long time ago), but I need some precise x-y of the buttons.

Not the Eten Skin but the standard WM5 Dialer.
The buttons and other (label) fields of the standard dialer can be resized and moved with Resource Editor or Restorator as described above.
I made a dialer myself for my QTEK9100 but people with a Verizon XV6700 have a problem sending text messages, so I give them the opportunity to adjust their dialer to a nice looking skin.
It's a hassle, you are right...
In Photoshop you can use slices and layers.

If you were to moved those buttons as you described as above, and refering to your black button skin, isn't that the Eten skin? Or tell me, whats the difference between your dial pad as compared to Eten dial pad?
As for the xy for the buttons, the information you provide
horizontal positions: 2, 81, 160
vertical positions: 84, 122, 158, 194, 230
button size: 78x35
Can be used for me to get a dial pad slicer done. But you've missed the xy for the 'backspace' button as well as buttons for the 'status screen'.
And while we are on this topic, we may be well able to see if anyone is free enough to get us a dialpad changer. AFAIK, to change the dialpad, all you need to do is just replace the BMP files in \Windows (for Eten skin), so it is quite easy to do. I'm so lazy to switch dialpad as per my Today theme, I end up using a grey pad instead of coloured ones.

Some people don't get the ETEN dialer or my dialer see post to work properly on their machine (Verizon TyTN etc.) see the messages in that trhead. So I would like to give them the opportunity to modify their own standard WM5 dialer to a nicer/usable skin.
And it works, because in version 1.3 of my SmartDial BigKey dialer I modified the DLL of a standard WM5 dialer of user "Trinergy" (see also the previous mentioned thread).
Btw. all the xy positions in my dialer are in the attached txt file...
And yes a dialpad changer would be very nice...
Also need WM 5.0 SDK installed?
OK, I modified my phcanrc.dll file using Resource Tuner, and started up the signtool.exe wizard. Everything went OK until the wizard asked for the certificate, which I couldn't find.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like you also need to have WM 5.0 SDK for Pocket PC installed to get the SDKSamplePrivDeveloper certificate that is required for certifying the .dll.
To download the WM 5.0 SDK for Pocket PC from Microsoft, you have to "validate" your installation by downloading Microsoft's WGA spyware.
I'm stuck here, since I really don't want to install the Microsoft Validation / "Windows Genuine Advantage" spyware stuff on any of my computers.
Sigh ...

Here are the necessary files...
I also found another way to sign files, in fact a whole tread about signing files... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=848131#post848131 and look for the signcode_294.zip (haven't tested it yet)
this is cool!
i havent yet done any of this and am still unsure where to get all the files. i really want the Vista II by JPL4 skin from paulya on my cingular 8528, except it does not include support for the smart dialer. how can i get it to work? is there a way i can install it and the smart dial modifications you have so it can work properly?
Bummer! Hit another roadblock ...
Well, I modified phcanrc.dll, signed it and loaded it into a .CAB file.
I also added all the Black Key images and some registry keys (assigning images to buttons, etc.) that I found into the new .CAB file as well.
So, I loaded the .CAB file to my XV6700, and ...
... none of the new key positions worked. Rats!
It seemed like the old standard WM5 keys were still in effect, and some of the new Black Key images were in the wrong spots.
I did a little experimenting with webpatrick's existing Big Key Black .CAB file, and found a registry key that "fixed" the problem (sort of):
HKLM/Security/Phone/Skin/ext = \windows\phcanhtc.dll
If phcanhtc.dll gets loaded, the phone keys work! However, when phcanhtc.dll is loaded, I experience other problems: Can't access phone settings, no text messaging, can't call voicemail sometimes.
Does anyone know anything about the phcanhtc.dll file? It isn't loaded by default. And, the registry key above normally looks like this:
HKLM/Security/Phone/Skin/ext = PhoneCanvas.dll
Does anybody know what's going on?
¿GotJazz?
2 webpatrick: I have installed your Black version on my MDAC 3 ... And it's working just fine. Thanks for that Cheers ...
Does that mean you can change this
Code:
CONTROL "", 23008, "MS_PHONE_CONTACTPICTURE", 0, 197, 25, 39, 52
found in phcanrc.dll to make the picture bigger?
Question : How to hide the word of speed dial in wm5 dialpad
I want to hide the word of speed dial & call history in wm5 dialpad, can it be done by edit registry? or i need to modify the dll? which dll should i modify and how?? Thanks.
Also i want to ask how to make the speaker on display in 2 lines.
Thanks in advance

SnapVUE like skin for HTC Universal

Hi to all!
Is there any skin for Universal WM6 which will be similar to this shown on this picutre?

just search for rltoday.
Thanks!

Nice job tslany!
Removing bottom bar: copy extracted dciNobar.exe to Uni (i.e. \Program Files or anywhere), create shortcut, copy shortcut to \Windows\Startup & you lose the bottom bar & soft keys every soft reset. [taken from LG KS20 thread]
Remove tray icons except bluetooth (I don't have it) by installing individual attached cab files.
Let us know if you are successful in this project!
Thanks, catch-22
Here is screenshot of ver. 0.4:
SnapVue.zip contains skin for rlToday and LCD font, SnapVue-tsk.zip contains TSK file
(for remove BT icon (Widcomm stack) I move BTTray.lnk from StartUp folder to My documents and softreset )
Getting better tslany!
Now, we need to put something on the empty space in the middle of the screen like the original SnapVUE. Perhaps align the calendar, email, sms icons in one row and use standard WM5/6/6.1 today plugins to fill up the screen.
Better yet is to enable today plugins above to appear in the empty space between those icons. Wisbar Advance and/or Advance Desktop cannot do that, but I don't know if rlToday can do that either.
Anyway, great job & thanks for sharing. Let me know if I could still be of any help. Will try your design over the weekend, you're welcome!
I had a (little) pause, but now I'm going to work on it. Here is screen with "SnapVue" service from Shift
A if is able to somebody send video with demonstration of all function original SnapVue today plugin, I would have thankful

[TUTORIAL] Changing Program's Icon

1. Windows Mobile 6.1 with Manila 2.1
because of restriction of WM6.1 we will not be able to change program's icon to high quality one, but what we can do change their appearance in Manila
look at the following picture showes modified icons in Manila's Program tab which can use as a start menu based on Rhodium style ROMs
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",

"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Each place in program's tab can have 96*96 Icon instead of windows normal icons (32*32). these icons extension are qtc and can be located inside windows directory by serching *.qtc files
Here is my favourite set of icon, including nearly 10,000 HQ icons
Code:
http://rapidshare.com/files/214990821/10000.HighDefinition.PNG.Icon.Pack.part1.rar
http://rapidshare.com/files/214962577/10000.HighDefinition.PNG.Icon.Pack.part2.rar
http://rapidshare.com/files/214962576/10000.HighDefinition.PNG.Icon.Pack.part3.rar
http://rapidshare.com/files/214962579/10000.HighDefinition.PNG.Icon.Pack.part4.rar
http://rapidshare.com/files/214962581/10000.HighDefinition.PNG.Icon.Pack.part5.rar
http://rapidshare.com/files/214990822/10000.HighDefinition.PNG.Icon.Pack.part6.rar
After finding your favourite icon now it must be converted to qtc, I do recommend CFC - THE Manila/TF3D Image Editor
From Tools menu choose Import from PNGs, press Yes and browse location of icon,
it will automatically converted to qtc format, once it's done it is better to change the name to MPI_*.qtc (instead of * put any name which you like)
Now with total commander or Resco explorer copy above file to windows directory.
With any Reg editor program go to following address:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE]\Software\HTC\Manila\ProgramLauncher
You will see numbers from 0 till 23 (24 place for icons start from left top till right bottom) choose the one you want to change it.
Put new path for the icon in IconPath like:
\windows\MPI_Programs.qtc
it's done now restart your manila and enjoy your new icon
2. Windows Mobile 6.5
If you are using WM 6.5 you can change program's icon directly from windows registry which will effect appearance of icon every where including Manila.
First of all you need to find high quality icon you can also use bluemetalaxe's thread it is full of beautiful icons and if you couldn't find what you are looking then make a request over there.
Now with Reg editor program go to following address:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE]\Security\Shell\StartInfo\Start
you will see reg keys similar to shortcut's name in windows start menu
choose the one you want to change
inside the key modify or create String Value (Name = Icon) with value of icon's path
for example:
now do soft reset
enjoy new icon
I used normal .ico file for changing the icon in manilla program launcher.

I need some help..
i search some square icon (in .ico format) to use in the program tab of the manilla. like the one for iphone or the one from htc (but both are to small to the program tab, i think we need some 1208x128 icons, not 64x64)
thanks for the help!
Here are my choices. I decided to make the start menu show categories instead of apps so i have used a registry editor to link each icon to a sub folder in my windows/start folder.
I have also attached the icons which you copy to ppc windows folder and link to them in icon path field.

Thanks to new manila and master chef Dutty now we can enjoy high quality Icons in our blackstone.
based on Rhod\Topaz ROM By pressing windows start button manila's programs tab is showing off, each place in program's tab can have 128*128 Icon instead of windows normal icons (32*32)
Dutty's ROM comes with set of icons located inside windows directory
using total commander you can find them (MPI_*.qtc)
Here is my favourite set of icon, include nearly 10,000 HQ icons
Code:
http://rapidshare.com/files/214990821/10000.HighDefinition.PNG.Icon.Pack.part1.rar
http://rapidshare.com/files/214962577/10000.HighDefinition.PNG.Icon.Pack.part2.rar
http://rapidshare.com/files/214962576/10000.HighDefinition.PNG.Icon.Pack.part3.rar
http://rapidshare.com/files/214962579/10000.HighDefinition.PNG.Icon.Pack.part4.rar
http://rapidshare.com/files/214962581/10000.HighDefinition.PNG.Icon.Pack.part5.rar
http://rapidshare.com/files/214990822/10000.HighDefinition.PNG.Icon.Pack.part6.rar
after finding your favourite icon now it must be converted to qtc, I do recommend CFC - THE Manila/TF3D Image Editor
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\Manila\ProgramLauncher]
you will see numbers from 0 till 23 (24 place for icons start from left top till right bottom) choose the one you want to change it.
put new path for the icon in IconPath like:
\windows\MPI_Programs.qtc
it's done now restart your manila and enjoy your new icon
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
Thanks MrKaon...I love the icons...
Manila Start Screen Registry Editing
Hi, I wanted to change the icons in my htc diamond 2 (tmobile compact v) manila program start screen and also to have folders that contain other icons (like games or organiser for eg).
By accessing the following keys (0-23) in regedit you can change values such as name, link, icon and write protect.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\Manila\ProgramLauncher\
I did try and add a 25th shortcut, it showed but did not work, will investigate that later.
Also I realised that you can use png's for icons in the manila menu, no need to convert to ico or qtc. (Need to find the optimum png dimensions yet).
I appreciate that some programs may exist to do this from a gui, but this a quick fix and all you need is a ppc registry editor.
MrKaon styler_RO.cab froze Diamond 2 Startup..!!
Hi,
I installed MrKaon styler_RO.cab on my Diamond 2 (TMobile MDA Compact V - UK) and it froze the startup sequence and the phone stuck at the windows mobile boot screen.
I had to do a hard reset to resolve action.
Perhaps it conflicts with TMobile skin files.
Beware anyway just in case peeps..
is for touch HD..

I followed these steps, but the resulting files did not have the .qtc extension. I renamed them like you instructed, adding the .qtc at the end. But when I changed the registry value to point to one of my newly created qtc files, the Icon in the manila programs tab was an empty white square (after restarting manila of course). Did I neglect something in the conversion process? (The png's I used were 96x96)
EDIT: Never mind, I figured out the problem. Apparently, 96x96 pngs are the wrong size. As soon as I scaled one up to 128x128, it worked just fine.

Each place in program's tab can have 96*96 Icon instead of windows normal icons (32*32). these icons extension are qtc and can be located inside windows directory by serching *.qtc files

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE]\Security\Shell\StartInfo\Start
you will see reg keys similar to shortcut's name in windows start menu
choose the one you want to change
inside the key modify or create String Value (Name = Icon) with value of icon's path
for example:
now do soft reset
enjoy new icon

hello!
id like to put new program icones for my PhoenixEx 1.2 manila 2.5, can u send me cab please? if u have slidebar icones too...ill be happy
Thanks for that tricks.
It's quick and efficient on WM 6.5, using any registery editor.
Still, changing the icon from the "software built-in" one to an external PNG files slows down the display of 'programs' tab very much. With 27 apps on my screen, it takes about 5 secs to pop-up. (i use HTC sense)
PNG files specs : size 90x90, between 4 and 14 kb each, located in a folder at the root of the internal memory.
Would a soft reset fix the problem ?
EDIT : Soft rest doesn't fix the problem. Takes up to 10 secs to display page with 26 progs.
Does the problem comes form the icons location, of size in kb ?
Is there any way to change the default built-in icon of every software ?
Good night all

WM 6.5 Start Menu Missing Folder Icons(Added)!!:D

I really like the new WM6.5 start menu especially the new icons however as usual M$ always do a half job! They left out certain folder icons i.e. new folder, media etc... So when you try to organize your start menu and create new folders you get the old ugly bitmap folder icons of WM 6.1 which just looks out of place in the new WM 6.5 start menu!! Yes I know you can use custom png icons with great utility such as mushipkw's hComber v0.1: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=507299
However I wanted the folder’s to match the new png folder icons from M$, so decided to rebuild the icons to the following; New Folder, Connectivity, Multimedia, Tools, and Web.
Now I’m happy my start menu is organized with matching folder icons, I can sleep now!!
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
So if you’re like me and want the same follow these steps:
1) Using the built in File Explorer go to Windows\Start Menu\Programs and create the following new folders: Connectivity, Multimedia, Tools and Web. Now when you come back to your start menu you should see these new folders you have created with the ugly old WM 6.1 folder icons!
2) Now install the attached cab Extra WM6.5 Start Folders, soft reset and enjoy, you can now organise your programs according to these folders using the file explorer!!
Also with a bit of xml editing I have re-sized the start menu icons so they are now slightly larger which IMHO looks much better on my HD than the default size tiny icons! I have attached the cab WM 6.5 Medium Size Start Icons, just install and soft reset!
P.S. I have also attached the Folder Icons PNG's which has the New Folder so you can do whatever you want with them!
Here are some more folder icons here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4001595&postcount=15 many thanks to jsmith8858!
and some more here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4072931&postcount=1 thanks to tboy2000!

No it's ok this warning prompt comes up with only default programs that come with the rom e.g. windows media player, pictures and videos etc.... but it doesn't matter if you move them from one folder to another they work fine! it's just M$ being over protective!

hey, nice work on the thread, can i ask for some advice?
im currently skinning my start menu, but i cannot work out how the ranking works! (i.e. the order the items are displayed)
I had a look inside your cab and i noticed the you have a selection of reg keys getting altered during the install, i was wondering if you could tell me what each does?
Favorite
FavoriteOrder
Group
Rank
im particuarly interested in the Rank and Favorite order.
I have been messing with this for a number of weeks, and it seems to be not so straight forward, i was under the impression that the first item in the top left (usually the "Home" icon) would be 1 then moving accross to the left would be 2 etc etc
But this is not the case as i can see your cab has numbers like "986" in the rank!!
thanks in advance for your help

Initialy I did the same thing as you until I just exported all the default reg values from HKLM\Security\Shell\StartInfo\Start and looked at the actual rank reg values of each program link i.e.Home, Phone, Messaging, Settings etc... and saw they were completly random ilogical decimal value anyhow I jotted down the relevant rank value so I knew where each items position is after it was case of applying these values to the programs link of my choice as to where I want them to be in the start menu!
P.S. I have noticed that these default rank reg values varies from rom to rom so what value worked for one rom will not work on a another i.e. start menu order wil not be the same!

More Icons
thanks for the great icons! I went ahead and fooled around and created some more -- games, nav, accessories, etc. Most, if not all, of the images were found at iconfinder.net, and I used Paint.NET to create the new ones. They are a little rough, but they look decent.
Included in the zip are two folder sets -- set "a" is a more traditional "sideways open-folder" style set of icons, set "b" is using the "wm6.5" folder icons and using your PNG's as a starting point. Each icon's name is prefixed with "a_" or "b_".
Again, I take no credit for any artwork whatsoever in creating these, I just put them together for my own use and thought I'd share.
Hope someone finds this useful!
