How To Instruct A Noob - About xda-developers.com

This guy gave me the best instructions even though it was an easy thing to do, I had no clue on how to do this and his instructions were the best I have ever had. he didnt ASSume that I knew where the program files folder was and went from the beginning (home screen) to the end and I think the moderators in here should give him a cookie. Many times I have hit a wall because someone ASSumed that i knew the the process starting from the middle of the problem and had to go thru hell to get it from the beginning.

First get yourself Total Commander. It's a free registry tool. However you can browse exactly as I posted earlier with file explorer which is in the
Today Screen-->Start-->Programs-->File Explorer.
Once in File Explorer, click on the top left icon under "File Explorer" and highlight to "My Device"
Under "My Device" you will see a few folders and one is named "Programs Files". Click on it.
Scroll down to a folder called "TCPMP". Click on it. Inside the folder are (2) folders in the top: "sites" & "sites.clean". Delete the "sites" folder and rename "sites.clean" to "sites".
You should now get no more nasties on your video bookmark...

THATS HOW TO GIVE INSTRUCTIONS!!!!!!

i'll agree and there is no doubt it is a detailed step by step procedure. Having said this, there are still *many* noob that doesn't even care searching and reading. it is posted as a sticky in almost all of the forum threads about the wiki, rules about searching before posting et al.
I may still be a noob for some (if you'll look at my joining date), has also received comment before like *have you tried searching?*it's already answered in post blah blah*this was asked for the nth time*and so forth when I first posted here.
Then I asked myself why aren't they friendly? why can't they just answer me straight? In time as I was reading throughout the wiki, the forums and all. I became *somewhat* knowledgable with my unit. all my questions before were answered already, to sum it up. reading makes you more knowledgable. instead of just braging a question straight up, make a search, read a little
you might be surprised with the outcomes as well. Answering the same questions over and over again can be a pain in the a$$. Now I understand why they hit me with those words the first time I had posted here just my 2 cents though

absolutely right. many people just don't try ro find it by themselves.
for example- in magician forum there is a sticky "no wm5 or 6 for magician"
but still daily we come across threads like "how can i put wm6 on my jam?"
but new questions and serious problems are surely taken care of.

WM6

does anyone know if or could i have the start menu on the bottom? that would make it feel more like a PC.....
No.
Use Wisbar Advanced Desktop for that
What a wonderfully non-descriptive subject line.
It says absolutly nothing and gives no clue what the post is about.
It forces us to actualy open the message and read it to have any idea what the issue, question, or information actualy is.
A new low point has been reached.
To answer your question. Two ways come to mind to move the menu to the bottom so its more like a PC.
Ignoring the fact that, if this was actualy done, the softkeys would now be in the wrong place for the hardware keys and that this question doesn't have anything in particular to do with Windows Mobile 6.
1) turn the phone upside down
2) buy a PC and use the phone as a modem.
Those are the only ways I can think of.

Wow, what a wonderfully non-helpful post. It does not answer anything, and it forces us to read it just to figure that out.
A new low has been reached.
Next time u got nothin good to say, don't say anything at all.
@Zacch, ive been trolling these boards for a few months and havent seen anything of this nature. I'm not sure the phone can even support somethin like that, but if there was u would find it here.

deach01 does have a point, though. How many of us have time to actually read every single thread? I certainly don't. The only reason I read this one is because I was tempted to make a post similar to what deach01 said. If someone has a question, and they'd like to have people read the question and respond to it, PUT A REASONABLE SUBJECT on the message!
I can only think of two reasons why someone would post in a WM6 forum a subject that says "WM6" - and neither one of them is very complimentary.
The two biggest problems with public forums like this (as I see it) is A) People asking the same question over and over without looking through previous posts to see if it has already been answered, and B) People using vague or "catchy" subject lines, like "WM6" or "PLEASE GOD HELP ME!".
Well, now that I've broken one of my main rules for forum posting (i.e. keep on topic) I'll go back to work. I just wanted deach01 to know that he isn't alone in his frustration with this sort of nonsense.
Brian.
You actually can turn one of your softkeys to launch the start menu. Here's a few options:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=283185
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=328635
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=279544
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=253613

Just a thought.

I have been trolling the forums for years and have spent 1000's of hours
reading and learning and searching...
mostly searching...
I was just wondering. How taxing would it be to have links
in the forums to entries in the wiki detailing what a given subject is all about?
similar to Tomboy notes in Linux.
where no special taging in the post needs to be made.
any word that has a wiki entry would automatically link to the article.
for instance:
while reading a forum entry about flashing a ROM, there is talk about
HARDSPLs, RADIOs, CID Unlockers, Nand, HaRET, Compcache, different
versions of android Donut Cupcake Eclair etc.... Tinboot, Flash,
CustomRUU.exe the list could go on forever.
Being able to click on the word that is of interest and lead them to a
stationary section for an answer(such as a wiki), may keep the "Stupid" or
repetitive questions to a minimum and help clear up the boards.
Instead of re-explaining how to do something every time a new visitor to the
site decides to ask noob questions, a noob would see something they don't
understand and then click on that word that links them to an article that
best describes it.
the problem is that stickies don't always stay up. good explanations don't
always have their own thread, and searching the forums usually just brings
up posts of people using those words in a sentence but not necessarily
explaining in detail what it is about or how to use it.
often there are very good posts that explain in detail certain subjects.
and if you search for them you will find them.
but you will never get rid of "Lazy" people that don't want to search for hours
reading countless numbers of non-helpful or incomprehensible jibberjabber.
and its not always a matter of being lazy. sometimes it is just damn near
impossible to find what you are looking for.but it is there....
it has just got to be.
Also, if this is possible to have setup,
when there is a subject matter that doesn't yet have an entry any
knowledgeable person that has permission to create an entry can do so.
(i am guessing thats already true for the wiki)
I am sure that may be more complicated than I am seeing it. But it sure would be nice.
I like this idea. At some point we are going to have to migrate to a new wiki (the one we have is no longer supported). When we do that, I will look into this as well. Thanks.
I think not... Cause i will always click the words by accident,
If i want to know something, i will look in the wiki myself
Maybe an option so you can choose
I don't like it either. That way it looks like some ad app has hijacked your browser and hyperlinks all relevant words for you. But, if you could choose wether to turn this option on or off, it might be an idea!
Why are you calling yourself a troll? WTF does trolling mean then? You don't sound like a troll right now.

I know what you mean though... I always "Highlight" with my mouse while I read and I would get mad if I kept getting redirected when I do that.
for sure this would be a better thing if it was "ON" by default for noobs

I consider a troll to be someone that joins a forum just to get access to a download or to frequently get info about something and never contribute back.
I don't really consider myself a troll... when I have something of value I will post. when I get really stuck with a problem I post. but I have no need to rant about BS or make comments on things that I am not really sure about.

I agree with the above and an 'option' seems to be better.

says i have a text message but i don't

im sure this has proably been asked before. but i have the HTC Tilt 2 from AT&T and says i have a new message when i dont. i have tried deleting all the messages in my sent, deleted, inbox, and drafts but touch flow still says there is one at the bottom. i also dont have a notice for one. how do i fix this?
I have a touch pro 2 and I have the same issue. I tried calling HTC and they said to shut the phone, have someone text me an amount of times equal to what the number of text messages it says I have is, then wait 5 minutes and turn the phone on. That didn't work. I need to get around to waiting on hold 15 minutes to ask them again. :/
ive had this issue before and there is a fix for it...
1) unzip the attached file to your storage card
2) run the exe file
3) restart your phone
let me know if you guys need more help, but that should do it. it always works for me.
Worked. Thanks. Now to figure out why Visual Voicemail isn't working and how to fix that 1 hour 2 minute thing on the clock.
This sms issue has been discussed in at least 50 different threads on here. There is no way you guys used the search feature to solve your issue. The last thing this forum needed was YET another thread about this
If you don't know how to use the search feature (which if you look at the top of nearly EVERY page here on XDA you'll see the "search box" so I really don't know how you couldn't) that's built into the forums, in google do something like search "sms count problem XDA" and I bet you'll come up with threads that have the fix in it...
common sense goes a long way.
Regardless... glad you found your solution
If you want to turn this thread into condescending posts, I can post screenshots of Firefox's history from the last 2 days using the search feature for a handful of other things. Convenience goes a long way. Searching isn't the most simple thing. Things have to be worded correctly, versions have to match.
thanks puff601 the programs worked like a charm. and Aaron yesterday before i made this thread i did use the search function and i got so many pages that it would take me hours to look through. i looked through the first ten and found nothing pertaining to my issue.

Not meaning to be condisending at all... the reality is like I said.. searching isn't hard, might take you a bit but compared to what? Making a post and then waiting for someone to search for you and post the fix that's been discussed a million times? How dare users on here call people out on that!!!!
If you do a search, even just in this sub forum you'll probably find 20 threads started by people who have less then 10 posts asking about the exact same thing... The other day I looked and at the top of the post's there were 2 threads about this... this one and another one right under it. Come on! Just for kicks I punched in what I recommened above by searching in google the "sms count problem XDA" and low and behold the third link down was a link to a touch pro 2 sms problem... the first link showed what you had to look for, the "fixunreadcount" program, as did the 3rd link. Now, am I claiming to be a genious because when I had this issue way way back I did just that and came up with the answer almost right away? No, but the fact is I looked and found it.. Luck? Maybe... but before I post anything I look and look... or if anything say I loaded on a custom rom and had the issue I would post in that thread asking if anyone had the same issue. I'm sure someone would ring in!
Google Result for sms count problem XDA
You're right.. searching isn't the most convenient thing... Especially when you don't know how to search properly I'm sure that can be a real pain in the butt.
Regardless you got your fix one way or another and that's all that matters as I'm sure it annoyed you beyond belief... maybe this post will stay at the top of the charts for a while so other people who have the issue can find it right away and not have to use the search feature...
better yet a mod should just start a new sticky thread with fixes and known issues with the phones..... Update it every few weeks and it would make the forum a lot cleaner place.

You just don't get it. There's a difference between human interaction and the strict wording requirements of the search function. You seem to be so dead set on proving why a certain method works so well that you fail to understand the human interaction aspect of a forum.

[Q] HTC TyTN II does'nt boot with Android

Hi, I have read and follow al the steps in the thread "How to replace Windows Mobile with Android (Guide)", including the step by step "HowToInstallWithAtoolsNand" in SourceForge.net but I'm sure I'm doing something wrong.
I have my TyTN II with 3.34 HardSPL and the latest Radio ROM that I use to load alll the Windows ROM without any problem. But when I flash my ROM with and Android build what it happens is that afterward it installs it, when the device is booting it appears a message saying "Intall module for this kernel" and the boot process stops there.
Y tried putting inside /andboot folder directly the "androidinstall.tar" that I downloaded from the thread's build (for example the "Incubus26Jc's Super E Cmod 5.0.8 T4 Beta 3". Also I tried to open that "androidinstall.tar" in atools, mix it with 2.6.32 modules and generating a new androidinstall.tar and putting it together with install-seq.sh inside /andboot following all the steps explained in "HowToInstallWithAtoolsNand" but always happens the same.
Can anybody know what could be happening?
Thanks in advanced.
Guido.

Perhaps you need http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=848921
To start, use a newer build. Then you won't need any updates. The latest builds from thoughtless kyle, clemsyn, scoot and I all have the necessary fix needed. If you want Cyanogen Mod then use scoot or mine. Our builds are based on CM 6.1 which is much newer with more features.

If you like to spend all your time indise this forum, go ahead, nobody is gonna stop you. I don't like to do it. I look for answers, no foolishness.

You you get all your answers from quick searches, you start to become lazy and unable to search properly. This is a BB, where all forums, threads, and posts are permanent. Available always. They are, so that others can come, read, SEARCH, and if, and only if they don't find the answer, open a thread.
Now, if we didn't wanted this... perhaps the dev's would have opened a chatroom on IRC and we could all be there to answer THE SAME ANSWERS over and over again.
Oh by the way, please explain how can you participate in a forum... without ever replying ? And he did answer something... as you putted it yourself... clever.

cause that is what the real community is ment to be or not?
So this guy thinks devs are forced to solve his problem? Have some selfesteem and try to solve it by urself, even my toddler could do it... Im starting to realize one of my college proffesors is right.... Windows stupifies people! (look at win7 logo: your PC simplified) Its like a black box when you cant see whats going on inside, you only have to now the input and output part of the system, ubuntu in the other hand forces users to learn some basic commands... the world would be a better place to live if we all had linux on our computers...
I just love it when people think that every site that offers something is required to offer support.
Not true, infact in the real world almost EVERY company in the U.S. of A does NOT have their own support, in fact it comes from 3rd party.
Same concept here, infact on this site, the userbase is filled with hardware tinkerers, software programmers, developers, IT professionals, etc, etc. They provide this stuff to you at no cost, and without warranty, meaning NO support unless it's something on their end (ex. programming error, etc), and then they provide fixes, which in case they did provide a fix in terms of a update package for android to fix the modules error.
I was the unfortunate one to run into this problem as well, and tried frantically to search for a reason why until I made a post explaining I couldn't find the source of the problem, and then they pointed me in the right direction and I went from there. Granted I ran into a second problem of my device running out of memory trying to apply the update, but that was an entirely un-related issue that I solved myself.
I myself am a hardware tinkerer, I love to break things, then fix them. I repair PCs, Laptops, hell even TVs in my spare time.
In retrospec. Things don't always work 100%, but for 95% of the people here, they go out of their way to try and fix it themselves and solve it themselves.
Everyone's right, there is a search button on these forums, and it takes probably 2 clicks to run a search, very simpl..... oh wait, Windows 7 can do it in 1 click, so I'm guessing 2 clicks is too complicated for you....

I dont understand how to use this site at all

If you post a 'i dont know how to do this' or 'its not working can some one help please'
you get loads of people telling you off and insulting you for it BUT the site has no propper search tool - the search thing is limited 'must be a certain amount of words' and say if i want HD2 ROM - whats the chances that that will be in the topic title EXACTLY
so the search brings back 0 results -
And if you ask for help, theres no notification system to say some one has replied?
so you have to book mark the page and keep going back - instead of logging in and all peoples replies popping up in a inbox type area...
lol - and 'tags cannot contain overly common words 'use / how'' - what the hell????
MAKE A PAID MEMBER AREA THAT WORKS PLEASE - ill pay $60 a year for a propper site
Well, the search tool is great. I used it so many times and never had any problem with it.
A paid/prenium membership... lol. Are you kidding ? Do you really think people will pay to get a smarter search engine when they can just think a few seconds more to use the proper key words and get the search engine working as they want ?
Why don't you subscribe to a thread you have posted in/started, and wait for an email alert that there has been a reply?
The Search tool isn't a Crystal Ball and doesn't read minds. Use it well and the results will improve. For example, a search that includes the word 'propper' will probably fail as the word is spelt 'proper'.
Sounds to me you just need a bit more experience with how forums work. As you become more familiar with the XDA forums it'll become easier.

Thread tags should be unique. ie. the following are pointless tags:
a, the, of, but, and, you, it, he, she, them, they,
The following are good tags:
AmonRA, ClockworkMod, Recovery, softbrick, ODIN
You should subscribe to threads you post in, then your usercp will show you replies to those threads.
Remember google is your friend. Search for what you want, and the word XDA, and you will find it 99% of the time

I second this. XDA has so much content from users that almost always you can find what you're looking for by either using Google or the XDA search. The key is word choice. That is why XDA urges users to search well prior to posting because the situation more than likely isn't unique to you.

I have been a member of this site for all of less than 4 days. And in that 4 days, I have learned:
1. How to Root
2. What ROM is best for me phone
3. How to use said ROM
4. What my phone can do when flashed
5. How not to be a n00b.
This site is absolutely amazing, and I learned, rooted, flashed, and enjoyed... All without using the search. I watched the "n00b video", cringed a bit, bit my lip and dove in. A wise man once said, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step."
Trust me. I wanted to find someone who would hold my hand and lead me through it. But even my boss, who has rooted MANY phones, would not point me in any direction (and he has taught me MANY things). You learn best through trial and error. I think the best quote in the intro video is "READ READ READ!"
And as for a paid membership... Seriously? I can see donating to the site, and donating to the developers (which we should all be doing anyway)... But paying just to get premium access to features available on any other forum is just mundane.
However, we did have a VIP area for our donators on Xbox-HQ. Our members who donated got first pick access to the newest releases of SID's and Auto installers, and the like, and access to FTP servers with everything they needed (legally) to get started. Maybe that would work...
hmmmmm.
Otherwise, my advice to you, sir? Just point and click. Find your phone, find a thread that relates to you (if you cannot get the search to work how you want) and read read.... READ!
Good luck! It is really not that hard once you delve in!
