Shortcut to new ROM - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

I want to upgrade to Schapp's new 4.31 ROM. I am now using 4.0 which is great.
Is there an easier way than reinstalling all the software and settings that are already on my Hermes?

Whoa there buddy, you CANNOT use spb backup (or any other backup) to port settings from one rom to another. Different roms have different registries so while most of the phone will be functional, you will most likely encounter errors.
Ur best off reinstalling everything mrlease.

Not quite right sir,
If you are upgrading from WM5 to WM6 then dont use a backup utility since registry stuff is slightly different. HOWEVER updating to a newer WM6 ROM will be fine if you use a backup utility, aslong as you are already using WM6.

Correct - that´s the way it is!!

How about moving from one build to another build in WM6? Will a backup utility like spb back up or sprite backup work?

Yer it should be fine, remember the core OS is still WM6, the builds just relate to bug fixes and later versions of dlls etc...

I use sprite backup, but one thing that's made me skeptical about using it for rom updates is updates to cooked in apps.
For example, I'm using schaps 4.01 but want to upgrade to 4.31. Loads of the cooked in apps are updated, but will sprite try to overwrite them with the old versions when I restore?
Plus what if my backup file has an app which wasn't part of the original rom but is in the newer one - will I end up with the rom version, or my previously installed version?
I suppose I could test these out, but if someone knows the answer it would be really helpful.

What the !
Oh, the countless hours I have wasted reinstalling all my apps and settings.
However, to be fair, SPBBackup always warns me against backing up from a different machine...

What the ! exactly. It takes me >>> hours to setup,customize,...etc after each flash. If someone can confirm this, it would be great. I'll flash more often. 8)

Really? In my 6 mos of visiting this site I've never heard this before...it was always "only do it with the same rom." Well if there is anyone I'd trust on this, its prob you vanx. Just surprising.

Mrvanx is, of course, correct. I have used both Sprite and SPB to restore programs and settings between different WM6 versions. Sprite seems to work the best, and has "ROM Upgrade" and "New Device" options in addition to the basic restore function. When I upgraded my Axim from 5 to 6 I used Sprites ROM Upgrade and it worked perfectly. On Hermes I have only tested with various versions of WM6.

Sprite Backup ROM Upgrade
I tried Sprite Backup ROM Upgrade option to go to the latest Berds_4.31_SS ROM. I turned out to be pretty bad, some observations:
1. Comm Managers didn't get carried over - I am using Schap's Kaiser
2. Spb Mobile Shell completely failed. Customized menu were all lost.
3. Many others I couldn't recall.
I thought I share this for others' benefit. I later did the step by step installing everything. Perhaps others have success but it didn't work for this round for me.

MrVanx is right AS FAR AS REGISTRY IS CONCERNED. You can backup/restore registry setting as a whole or branches and entries of your liking easily even without SPB Backup. But restoring full ROM with all programs is like forecasting the weather - you can never know the exact result. I have tried both SPB Backup and Sprite Backup to restore apps between the different WM6 ROMs and the results were not very positive - from duplicated shortcuts in the Programs menu (New ROM included program I had to install to the old one by default, but in a different location), various apps not working correctly, or ultimately bricked device (hang at WM Boot screen - HR required) - it ALL DEPENDS ON YOUR SETUP. As a rule of the thumb I would say the more apps you have the more likely you are to encounter some problems.

spb backup vs Sprite backup

spb backup vs Sprite backup - which is most reliable in restoring backups?
can either cope with Rom upgrades better than the other?
I just use the backup function of SK tool 3.14. It's reliable.
I give that a spin - Sprite has been less than perfect for me
Sprite has a function called Upgrade Mode Restore. It helps to restore a backup file made before the ROM upgrade to the upgraded device as long as the device stays in the same OS.
Spb does not support upgrade mode restore.
Thanks - I've had a few problems with Sprite on my Hermes - it was always 100% on my Magician
May be worth another look
SKtools looks quite good - but bit slow compression seems very good
I've been pleased with Sprite on both WM5 and 6. The only file it won't replace is compimeh.dll in WM6 and that is a non-factor in a restore. It does have the device upgrade mode as well as a very easy to use interface.

This also happends with SPB Backup, but you can exlude the file from the backup procedure. It seems that the file has something to do with custom dictionary words.
@starfish_001
How about Sunnysoft Backup Manager? There should be someone who makes a review about the latest versions of all backup programs. Since you were wandering what's best why don't you create a test review about backing up your device?
SPB Backup works better than the Sprite on my tytn,
cheers

See my Backup Bible; it's also cross-posted to the General forum here. In there, I've reviewed all the current backup apps.
Thanks - I give Sprite another try but in the past SPB has been better on my Hermes
it's already 2009 and lots of features were added... what's the best among the two?
I am thinking of SPB or Sprite Backup
Right now i use the Sprite Backup demo, they have a special
offer for HTC Users :
Sprite Backup and Sprite Terminator for $19,95
But i am not sure how save and good they are ... Is anybody
here who can compare both packages ?
So what do you guys recommend.
ive heard that sprite works even after upgrading the ROM, what about spb does that also have this feature??
Pro's and Cons anyone??
Don't bother with ROM upgrade mode. This feature is not guaranteed to work 100%, unless you always stick with official ROM upgrade all the time. And, you don't get too many official ROM upgrade out of the lifetime of the device.

WM6 w/Sprite Backup

was wondering if anyone tried using Sprite backup's Upgrade feature...will it work when switching between the different WM6 ROM's...wanted to figure out the best WM6 ROM for me but didn't want to go through installing everything all the time...couldn't find any info on this while searching...TIA
I wouldnt bother with the "upgrade" feature while using WM6 as sprite was written for WM5.
cool...thanks for the heads up...
I have used Sprite 5.1 with success moving back and forth between LVSW and Black ROMs following the instructions here.
https://spritesoftware.crmdesk.com/answer.aspx?id=328&back=search.aspx%3
Does save time and heartache between flashes.
Spirite backup works great, I have been using in different version of WM6 ROMS. No problem.
I have used Sprite for going between at least 4 different versions of ROMS along with the associated upgrades. haven't had any issues yey using the upgrade feature. sure saves time with not having to reload all the apps and reg codes

imaging an X51v??? Getting it back up to speed

Relative newbie here!!! Don't know if what I want exists or not. I have my X51v at WM6 A01 and it is stable and has all of the programs I like currently installed.
What I'd like to have is some way of restoring my Ax to it's current state (software-wise) after a hard reset.
I'm going to attempt the A03beta ROM, but I would like to avoid the many, many hours of re-installing all of my programs and then unlocking them, one by one. Even if I have to unlock them separately that would be OK, if I could just run some program to get it back to where it was at before the reset.
Is there some program that's newbie friendly that will allow me to do this????
Bump. Does a program like this exist?
Sure there is. Try a program like SPB Backup. I use it every week to backup my whole x51v. I also used it to Backup my earlier A02 setup before flashing my x51v to A03 recently. Then just restore from the backup after the re-flashing / hard reset. It works simply everytime (except when I upgraded from A12 (WM5) to A02 (WM6)
backup from different rom version is always a BAD idea as you would get the old registry/file from yr previous rom. U may find it's working but you may not get fixes/update from the latest rom.

First post, a question and comment...

First, just wanted to say thanks to all that have donated their time, brains and energy for all the updates and suggestions. I think it's definitely worth a paypal donation even if it's only 10 bucks.
Second, I'm surprised (not sure why though) at the lack of using the search button. Sometimes it takes some digging but generally with enough of it, the answer is there.
Okay, now for my stupid question. (Yes, I did do a search first... )
I've made the tweaks I wanted to do and I've backed up my system. My question is, if I do a ROM upgrade and then do a restore, will the restore put my tweaks back in it or do I have to start all over?
Thanks,
Mark
PS. Obviously everyone has an opinions but on average, was it worth doing the 1.37 ROM upgrade?
what kind of backup did you do? what ROM are you flashing to?

I used Sprite backup and I've got 1.35.456.3 WWE and I was looking at the 1.37 ROM upgrade for my Diamond.
Sers,
it is good to see somebody new here who follows the rules and searches!! There's really a lack in that for the past weeks ( especially since diamond's release ) !
I dont know what tweaks you did especially, but generally registry tweaks etc. gets lost if you flash a new rom.
You could even back up your registry but I wouldn't recommend that because in case of an update there will be some changes in reg before.
If dont want to install all your apps ever again try SASHIMI - that's an customizable auto installer for apps and maybe reg-tweaks too!

I know what you mean. I read all 50 pages and if I had to read one more time where can I get this program, how do I install this, blah, blah, blah... wow, I can see how it gets frustrating for those that have a) the knowledge already b) have posted the answer 1000 times.
I understand that sometimes you just don't feel like chasing something down but for basic questions... they need to search.
As far as my mods, they're simple. I did the battery one (disableling auto-attach) and #1 on the list.
Both are easy to reinstall.
I guess my question was if I use Sprite to back up programs and then do a ROM update, using Sprite to reinstall those programs won't affect the new ROM, will it?
I'm assuming Sprite backups programs, not registry changes too.
I ask because I don't want to backup with Sprite, do the ROM update and then use Sprite and have it put the old registry back into it.
Or does Sprite copy the registry also?
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark, welcome to xda-dev,
Sprite Backup copy the registry also.
Some apps are key in the registry to operate properly.
That is why you must avoid making a restore of your old ROM on your new ROM.
yeah its not recommended.. unless you're updating to a newer version of the same ROM, provided the chef hasn't done new registry tweaks.. or your old registry will reverse the new tweaks.. SASHIMI is recommended for sure..
welcome new person
no question is silly......unless its been asked many times before.
enjoy your diamond and have fun in this forum!
Thanks guys.... I'll buy the other program instead of using sprite.
Much appreciated.

If I flash a new 6.5 ROM, can I still use spb to restore progs, etc

About to flash my first new ROM on my USA T-Mobile TP2.
I've chosen the EnergyROM_23504_RHODIUM_08.Nov.2009_Standard as it appears to be getting good reviews.
My main concern though, having already installed so many extra programs, is can I still do a restore (using SPB Backup) from a backup I made on the stock T-Mobile 6.1 ROM? I would assume not, but man would it be nice if I could!
Please advise. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Jeff
You should not loose any data by trying. If it does not work then flash back to a 6.1 ROM. Another thing to try is by using the new free Microsoft program "my mobile" (I think that is what it is called, not by my device) before flashing back to a 6.5 ROM. The Microsoft backup does work when going to upgrade versions of the OS.
P.S. I am assuming that you are going from 6.1 to 6.5. If it is the same OS version then before, you should have no problems
SPB 2 has a "ROM Upgrade" mode. It should work. Sometimes a program or two may be finicky though.
Thanks to you both. I'll give it a go and report back on how it went.
Jeff
Just to close this out - I decided not to try, since I figured the only apps I really even needed to reinstall were Resoe Explorer (like the finger-friendliness of it), TV Guide, and CorePlayer.
Figured it'd keep it nice and clean to just reinstall them, which only took a couple minutes anyways.
Thanks for the help though!
