Quick IM for Blackberry and another mobile phones - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

I have searched far and wide for an MSN Messenger application that would not charge me and SMS fee. It's features are outstanding. This program, QuickIM, works just like the desktop version of MSN Messenger. Of course each program has it's flaws. I think it would be great to have a pop-up window from your Home screen but hey, its a cellphone not a computer.
It was easy to setup and easy for me. I installed it on my Blackberry 8310 and I was good to go. Probably the best advanatage that I have found is simply being able to have QuickIM run in the background while I am doing other things, but also being able to use emoticons. Just like home. I recommened it! Its the first program on my list.
Check it out for yourself, at least download it and give it a try. Visit QuickIM.com

RSS Today Screen Plugin.

Can someone offer some suggestions as to a good RSS new reader than will connect via 3G every "x" amount of minutes to download news say from the BBC.
Ideally it'll have a Today Screen plugin so that the information cycles or is readily availlable. Running WM6 Black 3.0.1 btw.
Thanks in advance.
Spb Insight is for me the best out there. Integrates perfectly with Spb Mobile Shell. You can scroll the news on your today screen or just use it as an application.
It's not free, but if you know your way you can find it on the net.
Works like a charm on WM6 Black 2.5
I use pRRSreader from - http://pda.jasnapaka.com/prssr/
It's free, although with Black 3.x I've found it slows the turn-on from standby and means that people calling you get an extra ring before you get the first. At the moment I just have it installed without the today plugin and it works fine.
You can set it to download every 1 to 9999 minutes.
Theres also a handy Wiki page on usefull software....
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Must_have_tools
Doesn't look like there are any RRS feeders on their so I'll go add the two mentioned.
SpB
Make sure you use Spb Insight 1.5 (1.1 was very slow, especially on SD cards)
yup..spb insight 1.5.1 doing fine in my today.. check it out!
I use Egress - http://garishkernels.net
It works fine for me, and is a part of my everyday phone usage.

I enjoy prssreader the best because it is small and does what it is supposed to do.
I use PocketRSS. It works really well.
Hubdog 2.0
Anyone had a look at hubdog, found it great, supports podcasts and it is free too.
Just tried hubdog, lots of features but seemed slow and a bit of a pain to use. Nice that it supports Podcasting though, and the "block connection" option is an excellent idea as it stops podcasts downloading on GPRS/3G.
I use Newsbreak ( http://www.iliumsoft.com/site/nw/newsbreak.htm).
I really love it. It is fast, stable, easy to use, has a good/clean inferface, and even works with podcasts. Its not free, but well worth the money, highly recommended. There is a 30-day trial period so you can try it out.
Ross
PS Using it with Black 2.5
Looking into it, I think it would be great if there was a newsfeeder that can automaticly download enclosers when connected to Wi-Fi but not over GPRS/3G, while still allowing the news to download in all cases. Wonder if it's possible or if anything is about.
BTW should this post be in the Hermes WM6 section?

Agile Messenger all the way. Has softkey support for WM5/6 which IM+ does not. Plus IM+ doesnt auto-reconnect if you drop cellular signal. Agile does.

I use MunduIM. It's cheap, has a decent interface, and works well.

auto reconnect seems like a must have feature if you want people to be able to communicate to you on aim reliably.
i was looking for an IM program that works with sms so i downloaded mobile IM (oz communcations) via medianet and it works ok, i dunno why but windows mobile makes everything seem complicated. i had the same prog on my old sony ericsson w810 and it seemed to work a lot smoother
im also looking for a good Aim client sort of like the one similar to the sorry ass t-mobile sidekick... an aim client that includes ur buddies away messages next to there name and also has there icon picture visable
I've noticed a majot trend- seems like almost everyone here wants something that used data instead of SMS for IM. I'm quite the opposite, and am looking for a client that works like the original OEM, that uses SMS. I actually don't have a data plan, and even if I did, I have unlimited IM through SMS and would rather use that than a data connection.
I've found CABs of the Oz client used on both AT&T and T-Mobile, and I've installed both, but both give me the same strange error when I run it.

For those looking for IM over SMS get the latest OZ Instant Messenger and Today plugin here:

For those looking for IM over DATA get Agile Messenger here:

slick is definitely the best.. its so fast to when i send messages it actually is instant unlike other programs. plus it free and supports a wide variety of protocols.
Without question, agile is just as "instant" as slick and FAR better looking than slick (which looks like it was directly ported from a series 60 device and doesnt even utilize the windows mobile interface.) Have you even tried it?

Anyway to Tunnel it Through my own Proxy Server ? So I don;t have to Rely on Someone elses ?
i have used agile before and i admit the slick interface isn't as nice as agile, but its not unbearable. i actually kind of like the simplistic streamlined look though. plus slick has features such as file transfers, offline ims, messages history, and a lot more configuration options.
also doesn't agile require you to purchase a key after a certain amount of uses?

Sending Bulk SMS from PC through TP2

Dear all, I'm new to this forum and I'm looking for your qualified help.
I bought a short while ago a HTC TP2 with WM6.1. and I upgraded it to the WM6.5. using the original HTC ROM software. Before the Easter I've been trying to send several greetings sms to my friends, discovering the very limited sms capabilities of the TP2 (compared to my old Nokia N70) :-(((
1. I'm searching for a software application to install on both PC and TP2 to allow me typing SMS on my PC and sending them through the TouchPro2 (something similar to the Nokia PC Suite). Freeware is preferred of course. I've been googling for it, also doing a search on this beautiful forum, but I didn't spot anything reliable where TP2 is specified. Any good recommendation from your personal experience?
2. Actually cand someone point me to something similar to the Nokia PC Suite, does such a complete piece of software exist for Windows Mobile phones?
All the best to you all.

Thank you for the quick answer. I am using Win XP, therefore ActiveSync 4.5 is on the table. (I am unpleasantly surprised by the limited and decreasing capabilities of the AS 4.5 compared to much older versions like 3.7, but that's another story.)
Anyway, I am not aware of such a strong feature allowing me to type sms on my computer using the ActiveSync interface, therefore could you please give some details about this? I guess that I need more than that in terms of software and that's why asking on the forum. Thanks.

That's not a part of activesync natively, I was just covering everything I saw listed as a function of the Nokia PC suite...I didn't see that SMS was part of that.
I know there's a number of apps that will allow you to SMS via an ActiveSync'd TP2, the only one I happen to recall off the top of my head is Jeyo Mobile Companion. When I get home this evening I'll see if I can turn up any of the other ones I've run across. Jeyo's product is great, but not free.

I'm not aware of any such software available for TP2, though it seems Samsung has developed a similar ( like Nokia PC Suite) for the Omnia B7610 based on Active Sync, I'm not aware though if it will work on our handset.

Sirphunkee, I was editting the post to give more details about the OS in use and about sms and probably that was the moment of your first answer. No harm done.
Thanks for the hints, I will see what Jeyo Mobile Companion can do. Of course other alternatives are most welcome.
With these limited sms capabilities of TP2 I feel like having 2 left hands :-((( Preparing a new sms one doesn't even get a view of the contacts list to click on the target name, but has to type the name. What about if having 5 or 10 persons to send to? Unbelievable unconfortable and unfriendly.
Sorry, the bitter comments are not addressed to you, but to the software designers which did not put themselves in the user's shoes.
Thanks for your open minded support.

And we'll gladly add your opinions about how SMS is lacking on winmo to the pile that's already accumulated around here
Group SMS does not text from the pc but it DOES allow for mass sms. Also it is not free. That said, I use it to mass text people and it gets the job done nicely...you simply set up groups, check off the boxes of those you want it sent to, type your text and send.

Yet I am a bit confused as you mentioned that Group SMS does not text from the pc, but, following your link, at the bottom of the page it says Skb Group SMS and Scheduler 5.2 does a PC application. May be there is a new version, if so I'll be most than happy. Also HTC TP2 is not shown in the Compatibility devices list, may be the list is old.

Not really .. I admit that I do miss the ability to send SMS/MMS from my PC thru my old Nokia. PCSuite also allowed you to view/delete your messages on your PC, selecting which you needed to keep and which could be discarded. I honestly expected some kind of PC software to come with my TP2 and was disappointed to learn AS was the answer.

Thank you for the hint. I installed the Samsung New PC Studio v 1.4.0 for Omnia, it looks nice and similar as functions to the Nokia PC Suite, but as expected it does not recognize my TP2 phone as connected (USB). A matter of drivers I would say, but how to solve it? Thanks anyway, I forgot that Samsung put on the market WM phones.

I fully agree with you. All the major phone manufacturers are supporting their phones with a free PC Suite, I am disappointed that HTC didn't cover the WM phones. Active Sync is a very poor solution with very limited features. I know there is a HTC PC Suite for the G1 nad Hero Android phones, but not for the winmo phones.
Btw, I wonder if anybody asked HTC about a PC Suite for the WM phones, with TP2 in particular, and what was the HTC answer?

This is a newer version from what I have, which did not have pc linking...apparently they have changed that, but to what extent I do not know. I run version 5.0 on my TP2 without any issues and it does a fantastic job!! I am pretty sure that if an older version runs good on my TP2, this updated version will work just fine.
Hi again. These days I managed to install and test both the Jeyo Mobile Companion and the Skb Group SMS and Scheduler 5.2. Both are nice and doing what they are supposed to do, but I consider the Jeyo Mobile Companion more user friendly, looking closer to the Nokia PC Suite I am used to and therefore more appropriate to my needs. So I will buy this one. The only drawback is that is doing only sms and not mms, but is good enough for me for the time being.
Thanks everyone for the good advice.
Sending Bulk SMS through TP2
You can enter multiple recipients manually or create a group where you add members and send bulk SMS like that. You can also search (or scroll if you don't want to type) through your contacts to add them to an SMS. You mentioned that you are not able to do this.
Can you tell me what limitations you've discovered in TP2's SMS?
Just curious.
Thanks!
I have been using PowerSMS and My Mobiler to bulk sms from my phone via PC. Although I do have a bit of lag when typing, but that may be the Fuze vs TP2.
Also, Google Voice can do this for you too. I won't get into the setup needed but you can bulk sms from that interface.
I've used Efficasoft mobile Express (free), but since upgrading to latest 6.5 ROM, I'm having a problem with SMS remaining in 'outbox'. I have emailed them and they're working in a fix.
Just thought of an application which could allow me to "bulk-text-message", and after reading here, I am giving PowerSMS a go...
My carrier here in Norway has a program I can install and use from Outlook. It syncs perfectly, of course, and I can just click all the contacts I want to send the SMS to and click send.
Maybe your carrier has something like it?

I enjoy using it. During NFL season I burn through thousands of texts to Fantasy league members, family, etc. I still haven't figured out a way to backup the Lists that I create so I end up having to recreate them after each flash.

Yahoo messenger exported to WinMo 6.5?

Hi Guys,
I'm just a noob as you can probably see from my number of posts on this forum.
Just bought my HD2 (Virgin Mobile) a couple of months ago, and am following the forum and website every single day for new things to learn/install etc.
As i am a big Yahoo Messenger user, i have tried different 3rd party software e.g. Palringo, Nimbuzz etc for yahoo chatting but is not really compared to the real thing and by that i mean (..and please don't shoot me) the iphone version.
I bought the HD2 for the simple reason that i hate Apple, don't like them one bit but some apps like Yahoo messenger are cool .
I like the things like shake to buzz someone or the interface of the app or sending files feature etc.
So now i am urging/challenging all the great devs in this community, can someone port the Iphone version of Yahoo Messenger app to WM or design one from scratch but with all the features that it has?
Thanks in advance
Well, i'm pretty sure that application will coming soon with the same user interface as like on iphone.
i hope i can help you
try out the oz messenger, search the forum as oz messenger, hope so that some of the messenger version matches HD2. as far as I remember theres a lot of variation , combination and versions. try until you find the most suitable one for HD2 ..
best of luck

Thanks. Apparently this uses your SMS and not your internet connection. I have around 3000 inclusive text and unlimited, well around 1GB, internet plan so i would've liked to use my internet connection.
I think i just need to wait until a wm version same as the iphone will pop up, but i would still never buy an Iphone
the oz messenger uses date not text service. I use it everyday. It has yahoo, AOL, and hotmail (I think). this program supports auto start on windows start up, Background sounds and Alerts. It supportsBuzz, smilies, and auto sawing of Conversations. I used it with the touch (QVGA), Touch Pro (VGA), & Touch Pro2 (WVGA). seems to work on all resolutions. It should work on Data Connection & Wifi.
let me know how you like it...

Request - Today Screen Plugin for HTC Messaging App

Hello all!
So, despite the fact that I have an HD2, with it's massive screen and awesome internals, I haven't liked using anything other than the really old-school Today Plugins. Sense bugs the crap out of me, and I'm still not convinced on Titanium.
I use most all of the standard Today Plugins that come with WinMo, but if I'm using HTC Messaging (which I would like to stay with), it doesn't come up in the usual 'Messaging' plugin. Would it be possible for someone to throw together a plugin that fits in with the other standard ones, and just works with HTC Messaging? Or if anyone could point me to some helpful links, I'll give it a shot.
Thanks!
Or, here's another idea. I use Windows Live exclusively on my device, and as you can see in the screenshot, I use the Windows Live plugin for my email. Would it be possible to mod the existing Messaging plugin to show results and link to the HTC Messaging app? Seems like that would make life easier.
