Another quick question from me guys.....my question is in regards to the new Java manager that comes with the Brightpoint ROM....IE, the Esmertec one..is there a way to make it always "accept" it's request for internet access? I run the Opera Mini browser through it, and every damn time I have to switch apps or whatever, it asks if it can use air time to get online(ive got an unlimited data plan so I dont care if it does), and its annoying to always have to scroll up and hit yes. Any help is appreciated....thanks!

Not many ppl seem to use java, but it does give you two fantastic tools, gmail and opera mini. The gmail midlet is a very usable version of the desktop gmail experience, and opera mini is indispensible once you get used to it, it seems to cache the web pages on the server and serve an optimised version of it, the result is very quick downloads with only a little less functionality compared to a full browser.
BUT...
now I've up'ed to Black 2.5 the midlets randomly crash. I use the IBM J9 midlet manager, it's the only one that works well that I know of. Does anyone else have this problem? Anyone got a better midlet manager?
Cheers, and thanks to the ROMance.
i dont have any issue with the midlet manager found in wm6 black 2.5. the gmail midlet is 1.1.1.

Does it remember your login? Mine doesn't (but it's never managed to connect so maybe that won't be a problem).
Does it automatically connect? Mine can't manage a network connection even when other apps have already connected.
Does it ask various permissions each time? Mine does.
These are the main problems I have with the Intent one. The IBM J9 one just causes random lockups that require a reset.
answer is 'yes' to all except question 2 (auto connection).
if you got it connected, it'll remember your login information.
it doesnt auto connect.
it asked for permission to access the network, probably it wasnt signed to be trusted.
have not tried J9 thus no comment.
to solve it, delete the files you will find in /application data/tao/intent/app/jam/midlets and reinstall them. all the midlets will work again.

Well after reading of your successes I managed to get one version of gmail to work in the Intent midlet manager. It's not quite right thoug - it still has to ask for a network connection and I can't open mail by tapping on the touchscreen, which J9 allows. But if it's more stable I don't care. Your comment about signing...can you elaborate?
Cheers, pp

I'll try it. Reading around the web it seems like all the midlet managers for pocketpc have various issues, but I just want one that doesn't crash!
Hey everybody, Good Evening,
I hope everyone is having a wonderful night. For those of you who took the time to read this post, I have a question about "Third Party Apps". How exactly do they work?
For instance, I have a TMobile Dash/HTC S620, I DO NOT have an internet plan.
Now let's say I decided to download and install a "weather app".
How exactly does the third party app work?
Does it need a connection to the internet for a third party app to work? So would it work on my phone?
If it does need an internet connection, would it "force" a connection to the internet to make it work? Therefore leading to an unwanted internet usage fee?
Thanks.
For some apps you will need internet access, specially for weather apps (have to update somehow) If you use T-mo, look around the forum for the t-zones ($5.99 internet plan) hack
Thanks driguez!
agreed if you're cheap like i am just use the 5.99 tzones hack. very simple to set up and works like a charm for every internet service that i use on my phone.
i got a question for you guys dun have the tzone plan just yet but am looking to get it if it will be the same to me than the 19.95 plan. can i use internet explorer with it? also email like my gmail and hotmail? and what limitations are there with it...ex. with internet explorer...only specific sites i can access?
thank you for your help.
Typically anything that can use a proxy will work.
But I would recommend using Opera Mini instead of Internet Explorer because Opera Mini is much nicer and faster then IE...
My TP2 keeps opening up it's data connection and I can't trace what it is.
I have turned off automatic updates for:
Weather
Facebook (manila & app)
QuickGPS
Is there anything else that opens up the data connection? I'm getting a bit concerned about it.
I have installed the following apps:
GSplayer
Tomtom7
Igo8
Coreplayer
Total Commander
S2U2
Also can anyone recommend a decent data usage counter for the TP2?
Use SPB wireless monitor. I think its awesome at keeping track of my data usage.
Wow that's actually really useful! Time to track down this rogue app!
Thank you.
i had the same problem.. i had Tomtom and CorePlayer installed...
I did a hard reset (for another reason) and i didnt install Tomtom yet... and so far i dont have my data connection opening randomly anymore.
It's strange. Is there a way to reset the stats in SPB Wireless Monitor?
I wanna start with a clean record so that I can see what app is opening randomly.
I had tomtom on my kaiser and it never did this. Whatever it is, it's not using much data.
I forgot to mention that I have google maps installed...and it could be this that's causing the problem..I will keep an eye on it!
You can use a couple of methods to stop your data connection opening at all. One I used to use is NOGPRS, which disables your data connection(s), or you can try Schaps Advanced Config (I believe he has released one for the Rhodium somewhere) where you can turn off your data connection(s) in the same way. I don't use either method now as I have an unlimited data plan, but it was really useful before.
I also have an unlimited data plan, but it has an AUP and I don't wanna exceed it by some rogue app downloading hundreds of MB of data without me knowing!
I am aware of NODATA and similar apps, but they're a pain when I actually want to use the net on the phone!
Beggars can't be choosers I know, but I just wanna find out what app thinks it has the right to connect to the net without me knowing about it!
Incidentallly, to reset stats in SPB Wireless Monitor, delete the files in \Application Data\SPB Wireless Monitor\ (though this deletes ALL stats, since the beginning of time etc)

Just a thought....
The latest version of Google Maps (3.0.1.6) comes with Google Latitude.
If Latitude is enabled it could be using your data network to send Location Updates to Google-Central (It would be low data volumes periodically).
To disable background Latitude:
When you exit Google Maps via "Menu->Exit", if you get asked a question: "Continue to share your location with Latitude?" answer "No" and this may sort out the Data Connection problem.
Ok i have a Tmobile Dash on on the US tmobile market
albeit i have the 6.1 modded update my question is, is there a limit on how many apps you can have open?
ill have beejiveIM, pocketwit, and email open, but if i open the IE browser or any other browser i have installed (skyfire, iris, opera mini) it will shut down 1 of my running apps.
Ive tried clicking the exclude option with celetask but it still will close a app.
Would this be becuz the dash has a app running limit or are these just timeouts originating from the apps im using?
Im thinkin it might be a dash issue and i want to upgrade to a dash 3g but i dont want to if i find out that the same issue occurs on that model.
You have a certain amount of RAM memory available and if you run heavy memory users, of course the cell will either close some or freeze.
I live in Bolivia, my cellular provider is Tigo.
I own and HTC Touch pro2 (AT&T HTC Tilt2) and I had this problem: Involuntary internet connections happen in my phone, my cellular provider has billed me 16 MB for internet navigation in a single day. Their explanation is that probably phone has connected in background using an application. I know the touch flo interface connects to download e-mail headers and weather reports, but I find difficult that this application can use 16MB What can be happening?
As I said all the 16MB were downloaded in a single day and the last 3MB in 5 minutes after downloading internet connection.
Besides the default applications I have just installed pocket e-sword, a bible reader that does not connect to Internet
Is there an application that downloads this quantity of information?
If so, how can I disable it?
Is there any way to see which is the server where my cell connected and what it was doing?
Is there any way to set up my phone with a max download data amount?
The solution that the cell provider gave me momentanially is to disable my internet conection, but that is not exactly what I want.
Thanks on advance.
Igor
Well if you are using Sense, it downloads weather if you dont have it set not to. You might also want to disable the "Get my location at anytime" feature, because it may use AGPS. But I really dont know what else would cause this other than the fact that it is Windows, and it loves its TCP/IP. but the best thing to do would be to use MoDaco - No data to disable the data connections, then when you want to use them just turn them back on.
Thank you
What's MODACO???
How do I disable "Get my location at anytime" ???
Modaco is another website with a forum.
Not sure if this is the latest version, but a quick google of this site turned up the Modaco No Data cab attached to this thread.
btw, you could use something like the SPB GPRS monitor to keep an eye on when internet connections are being made, and how much data is being down/uploaded. If you check task manager when you see a connection being made, perhaps we can trace where the data is being requested. I believe there is a demo version available of this program. I've not yet got a TP2, but can at least confirm that this monitor works fine on a TyTn II. You'll need to tell it which connection to monitor. Battery Status plugin for the today screen should apparently also do the trick.
If you ever get really desperate, you could always use WiFi at home to test without involving spending more, and use your PC to sniff the packets, check for what IP addresses and types of data are being requested. There maybe an app to do this directly on your phone, but I've not looked.
