Not many ppl seem to use java, but it does give you two fantastic tools, gmail and opera mini. The gmail midlet is a very usable version of the desktop gmail experience, and opera mini is indispensible once you get used to it, it seems to cache the web pages on the server and serve an optimised version of it, the result is very quick downloads with only a little less functionality compared to a full browser.
BUT...
now I've up'ed to Black 2.5 the midlets randomly crash. I use the IBM J9 midlet manager, it's the only one that works well that I know of. Does anyone else have this problem? Anyone got a better midlet manager?
Cheers, and thanks to the ROMance.
i dont have any issue with the midlet manager found in wm6 black 2.5. the gmail midlet is 1.1.1.

Does it remember your login? Mine doesn't (but it's never managed to connect so maybe that won't be a problem).
Does it automatically connect? Mine can't manage a network connection even when other apps have already connected.
Does it ask various permissions each time? Mine does.
These are the main problems I have with the Intent one. The IBM J9 one just causes random lockups that require a reset.
answer is 'yes' to all except question 2 (auto connection).
if you got it connected, it'll remember your login information.
it doesnt auto connect.
it asked for permission to access the network, probably it wasnt signed to be trusted.
have not tried J9 thus no comment.
to solve it, delete the files you will find in /application data/tao/intent/app/jam/midlets and reinstall them. all the midlets will work again.

Well after reading of your successes I managed to get one version of gmail to work in the Intent midlet manager. It's not quite right thoug - it still has to ask for a network connection and I can't open mail by tapping on the touchscreen, which J9 allows. But if it's more stable I don't care. Your comment about signing...can you elaborate?
Cheers, pp

I'll try it. Reading around the web it seems like all the midlet managers for pocketpc have various issues, but I just want one that doesn't crash!

I'm running WM6 Black 2.0 for Cingular on my Hermes.
When I run the Google Maps Mobile application, it will load a little bit of data then tell me that the program requires a data connection. If I answer OK, it will continue on, download a little bit more data, then repeat the process like every 30 seconds or so.
Anyone else seeing this (or have a fix)? Or is this just a case of the app not being fully compatible with WM6 ?
i have the EXACT same issue. bugs me like no other. no clue how to fix it... will keep an eye out on this thread.
Same problem here
Yep - other than that, works a treat. But it bugs the hell outa me !
i had this problem with all the roms xda live, black, and lvsw. Use LiveSearch (not to be confused with windows live) instead, a much better program.
I have the same issue here too.
Just saw this same issue last night. I didn't have it on AKU 3.3 load prior to upgrading to Black2.0. It worked fine on older official HTC ROMs.

That's what I had to do, I pretty much gave up on Google Maps.
More echo over here
I hate to agree with you all, but there is something on the cooked roms (WM6) that does not work with any of the google applications.
I am able to use any other internet application but gmail or google maps. Both applications complaint of not having a connection, when there is one.
Maybe they are not WM6 friendly
I did not have any issues with Google maps but I uninstalled it because windows live search does the exact same thing and Google maps takes up a huge amount of memory....along with adobe
This version open for public.
No need enter any email/password
Super fast, stable...
Yeah, I have been using this. Much faster than the previous version I was using. It even plays BBC IPlayer, a little jerky but amazing non the less. Shame they screwed up the logging in for Megaupload but all in all a good upgrade and by far the best browser on WM.

Make sure nothing else is running (use something like wtask to close programs). You're low on memory, you could uninstall some stuff, get a lighter ROM?
Looks like its not that..
I got Errors when trying to use GPRS connection.
Over WiFi / AS it works like a charm..

ps
My ROM is CRC 13.00 only with HTC Home
Make sure you dont have a proxy server set.. Skyfire uses its own, and my prevent it from connecting.
I never use any proxy... where shall I look for these settings...

Crashing
Keeps crashing on mine. have tried gizmodo.com only but that should be enough...
I've been using it for a little while now and find it quite fast and capable. It hasn't crashed on me once.
I did have to fix the proxy server setting, but other than that, I like it a lot.
The only thing I noticed is that it seems to use a lot of battery. I need to do some quantitative testing, I usually use Opera and it seems to use the battery much quicker than even the latest Opera, but I think my battery's on it's way out anyway, so it's hard to tell. Like I said, I'll have to try them with the same sites and conditions. I'll report back if I find anything helpful or conclusive.
Anyways, so far this seems to be a great browser. I've been a very staunch/die-hard Opera user/supporter for years and this is the first time I've found another browser I would even consider replacing it with. Good show. Thanks.
edit:
BTW it's an 8525, a HERM100 currently running CRC's latest stable rom 13.1 pre 6 or something. Anyway, great app. Thanks again.

Don't u think skyfire "EAT" Power too much, my x01ht only last 1.5 hrs if using it.
"To do, or not to do" That´s the question!
I´m using skyfire to see flashstreams. For all the other, i use opera mini!
Opera mini is very fast and this handling is easy.
In skyfire you must zooming the links, ...
Always and always the same procedures.
This is exhausting!
After installing the newest version or a server update by skyfire i have a new problem. in 1 minute reconnected my browser 32x. i have since 6 Month an account. everytime i don't have problems. if i use an older version, the the same problems.
are you have the same problems?
Thats the newest skyfire 8184

Hey your most very welcome
Skyfire troubles!
NO sound....
Anybody??????
ya, i have no sound either.
worked few days ago tho
no issues with sound and skyfire, just listened to a song on youtube
Ok, so tell me, I buy into a contract to purchase a phone. Signed, sealed, and delivered. Take MY phone home, install acbtaskman on it, discover device could perform better if a startup app, (above mentioned process and obfuscated startup procedure) is not using almost 6MB of RAM, along with a few other offenders, kill said task, and it farkin starts up again, ok, so it is a monitored process.
Does this mean that I can charge rent for undesired poor device performance due to uncontrollable loss of cpu cycles and RAM resulting in poor performance of a device that I think I own?
Am I making any sense to anyone? Or is there the off chance that AT&T's 6.5 ROM doesn't really suck?
?Glitch
I get that you seem upset but you're not being clear. Are you pissed off that Opera is auto-loading into memory?
If so, this is because of the Push Internet "feature" of our devices. It's ironic that this is one of the selling points because most people disable it to save memory.
There's a couple of cabs available to disable it. Search for "disable push internet".

Thank you, I was actually wondering what could be so important as to sacrafice 6MB of RAM in a seemingly monitored process. Funny thing is I don't even have any Push Internet items configured for download, curious in the logic that a TF3D tab would be bothered lauching the opera9.exe process with no work to do... Go figure...
Strange
My Opera is not eating too much mb´s!
Have you considered to change the version?
Have a look on my sig
You may want to check out the e2 AT&T lite custome ROM. It's virtually identical to the AT&T rom, but without all the junk that you don't need. (Link is in my sig)

Funny thing is that this does not always fix it, I've tried and tried, does not help. I do not run TF3D, disabled push, etc, yet Opera randomly is still running.

Disabling it via the GUI in TF3D/Sense or disabling TF3D/Sense altogether will not help.
You didn't search "disable push internet" as I suggested. If you did, you would have been linked to here. Just follow the instructions there.

Installed the cab long ago, thanks..
I have T-mobile TP2 with 6.5 stock rom. I just add data plan to my phone recently. I notice that my opera mobile will not work any more if connect via wifi but it works with 3g connection. Skyfire, skype and all other programs work with both wifi and 3g connection.
I have opera mobile 9.7 and just install opera mobile 10. Both of them cannot load any page with wifi connection. I also uncheck everything under proxy setting in config menu.
Any suggestions to fix this problem?
Thank you
I have the same problem. If I find out something, I will post it here.
Make that three of us
Please post if you find anything.
Thanks
Yes, Please. Just discovered this today. IE isn't working either. Yes, I disabled the proxy. Other internet apps working fine, just not my browsers.
Use Skyfire It's Better Than PIE & Opera IMO!!!
One can only assume if none of the other browsers are working that skyfire would't work either haha
Worth a shot. Also.. I dont know if you've tried but back up all your info (contacts and whatever else) and do a hard reset. Then test and see if that fixes it.. I would say with 100% certainty that it will.
Then just load back on all your ap's.
Drastic but beats sitting around waiting for someone to happen stumble across the thread that has a fix.
Going to hard reset in the morning. Got some other broke stuff from trying out too many cabs, so might as well. Been getting a lot of error reports the past 2 days, too. Will report back.
Well Skyfire & PIE Work Perfectly Over Wifi For Me Opera On The Other Hand Works When It Wants 2 Over Wifi
OK, I hard reset and this is still not working. No Opera or PIE over Wifi. Any clues? I really don't want to install another browser if I don't have to. Alos, can't find the cab to make Opera exit on X instead of running in the background.

Man Trust Me Just Use Skyfire You'll Never Turn Back To Another Browser Ever Again!!!
I had Skyfire on my Incite and didn't like it. Why do I need to login to an account to use a browser? The stuff that came on the phone that is taking up space on the ROM should be able to work with both Wifi and MediaNet. No reason for it not to.
Have you guys tried using any other builds of Opera 9.7? There are a lot of different builds available here on XDA. Just search up "Opera Thread" and you'll end up with a thread containing links to download most, if not all, releases of Opera 9.5, 9.7, and 10.
If it were just an Opera problem, I might try that. But it is a problem with PIE, as well. That leads me to believe it is a Tilt 2 issue.

I have done the changes, tested IE, Opera, Google, Bing on AT&T 3G network (H with the .cab) and wi-fi, and everything works great! My speeds have jumped over 1.5mpbs consistently with the outlined changes, and all internet data apps are extremely responsive now. Youtube downloads load in less than 10 seconds, and no jumpiness. MobileTV is the same now, before, kept buffering or got distorted every 15-20 seconds.

Here's what I learned while getting the HTC YouTube application included in the OEM AT&T ROM to work perfectly.
The value in the registry needs to be modified:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\YouTube
ProxyName = wireless.cingular.com:80 (default value) needs to be replaced with [BLANK].
This value is intermittently restored, so it is nececssary to change a few others to prevent that.
The value at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\SUN\JVM\PRELOADAPP
proxy = wireless.cingular.com:80 (default value) needs to be replaced with [BLANK].
The value at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\ConnMgr\Providers\{EF097F4 C-DC4B-4c98-8FF6-AEF805DC0E8E}\HTTP-{436EF144-B4FB-4863-A041-8F905A62C572}
Proxy = wireless.cingular.com:80 (default value) needs to be replaced with [BLANK].
The value at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Apps\Esmertec Java\Properties
com.sun.midp.io.http.proxy = wireless.cingular.com:80 (default value) needs to be replaced with [BLANK].
Changing these three values will prevent the YouTube proxy from being restored. However, this will prevent the Opera Browser from connecting when the phone is connected via Wi-Fi. In order to fix this, the value at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Opera\Defaults
ByPassProxyForNonGPRS = 1 (default value) needs to be changed to 0

I Had a similar problem. my opera mobile wouldn't work unless I opened internet explorer first. I saw this in another thread and it worked for me. Maybe it'll work for you too. (had to delete the link since I am still a "new" account)
Hi
I have acquired HTC HD mini recently. I upgraded its ROM to new version 1.36.720.X. But still I am not able to connect Windows Marketplace via my mobile. My GPRS connection is set correctly as I am able to connect Facebook and My Phone successfully. I am facing issue with Windows Live and Marketplace.
I always get error while trying to connect Market place that
"There may be a problem with the Marketservice now. Check your internet connection and try again later."
Can anybody provide me solution for this.
Registry value for HKLM\Systems\Versions\Aku is .5.3.3 (Which is due to latest OS version came with ROM) . Hence that earlier fix of changing value of Aku is not workable though I tried it.
I think that there are many unfortunates like me who have faced same problem.
Thanks in advance for help.
regards,
Pranit
Hi
It has been long time and I have received no answer. Please help me as I have been not able to use marketplace. I have tried all solution mentioned in forum but with no effect.
uninstall and redownload marketplace.worked for me.
This solution does not work. I didn't know how to uninstall Windows marketplace. Hence I installed and replaced downloaded version of marketplace app. Need a concrete solution. Just to mention, I am from india. I came across one more user of HD mini who is facing same issue.
I need helping hand here. Kindly somebody give me some solution. Is there any issue while accessing Marketplace from India?
Is your time date correct for your country.
I had the same problem i change the time to right time for my country and marketplace could connect.
I hope you understand my english.
Yes. I have synchronised time with internet. Still no effect. Assume that I have no idea about how to set the local time and guide me. I am really pissed off as my all efforts to connect Marketplace are failed.
go to settings 'time, date", and also check "country and text" just below the tab "time and date" I hope you understand this i have to translate from dutch
Hope this solve's your problem.
Then I have done it correctly. Still with no effect. I just wanted to confirm it. Everything seems just right.
i found this regarding your problem
Have you tried this deleting a reg key that sets the download location for Marketplace.
Can you please tell me where to find this entry in registry?
HKCU\Security\Software\Microsoft\Marketplace;Downl oadLocation
I found this on the forum of mobilitydigest.com.
Maybe you can find a solution for your problem there.
Just typ in Google marketplace bootstrap
tried. But still not working. I am stuck since I bought HD mini.Have tried number of options to connect marketplace and all met with failure. Can you think of other solution?
I have had this problem too. But simply killing the process in Task Manager, rebooting the device and retrying worked for me!
Please tell me which process is to be killed. I tried to locate process and kill it. If I am not wrong then in task manager there is no option to kill process but to kill application.

Hi , I have tried all sort of options now. But I have met no success. Please, please provide me some solution. My HD mini is sort of useless if I am not able to access marketplace. I am not able to buy certain apps which I would like to.
This guy had the same problem as you.
I've had this problem for quite some time and I think I may have found a solution that I didn't really seem to find in many other places. I believe that Windows Marketplace Mobile requires an authenticated connection to connect (network associated GPRS such as AT&T, Edge, 3G, etc...). To connect to WinMo Market with a wifi, I believe also requires authentication. My own personal router is secured with WPA and AES encryption, which my phone can connect to. I had no problems with connecting to the internet via browser (for the most part) with Wifi or Edge. Problem is, for whatever reason, Windows Marketplace did not recognize that my Wifi was authenticated. After playing around for quite some time to figure out why, I stumbled on a program called Advanced Configuration Tool (I own an unlocked HTC HD2). Turns out, my stock ROM had WPA Authentication disabled (which explains why flashing to a new ROM work for people since that option is typically enabled by default). I guess somewhere along the long, my phone had disabled it, most likely by some action of my own. So after re-enabling it in the network settings of the program, I had no more problems connecting to Winmo Market. Additionally make sure that your wireless config on your phone enables IEEE 802.1x network access control (you can adjust this on the actual wireless network setting where you input your passwords). I'm sure there are ways to activate it through the registry, but Advanced Configuration Tool by Touchxperience developers made it easy (it's in the network settings menu).
