Reliable in car charging - P3300, MDA Compact III Accessories

Hi folks, stupid question time.
Can anyone put me onto a decent in car charger that will last more than 20 mins in regular usage? preferably one that has a longish straight lead, as it is to be used in a peugeot where the power socket is miles from the xda holder.
Could there be a hardwiring solution?
Apologies for the muppet questions but I am new to these fella's, my old trusty nokia having just expired from old age, lol.
best regards

well, u could just buy a in car charger from eBay or somewhere, and cut the old wire off and replace it with something suitable
WARNING: Do NOT have the phone plugged in while starting the car!!! you will blow the USB board, which means that you wont be able to use USB to transfer files, or use ActivSync!!!

Hmmmm, was hoping for something commercial as it will be used in a taxi by many different hands but i suppose the heath robinson method is worth a try.
Thanks for taking the time to reply to a really stupid question. Hehe now I know I can ask many more........

Its not a stupid question at all!
I would use a standard mini usb charger but don't for rear of forgetting to disconnect before starting the engine.
So, I get about four hours of nav from one battery.
There must be a better solution?

Callpod Accessories

I like Callpod (have been able to abuse one of their Dragon bluetooth headsets while enjoying the extended range) and their accessories, but... I think one of their accessories is what killed my Excalibur, my Asus P600 PND, and my Athena (all of them had their charging circuits fried somehow...).
None of the three devices will take a charge or be recognized as even being plugged in on a USB port on either side.
The only common thread between all three of these devices is that they were in my car (which I have a 4 way 12volt splitter in place) and they were all plugged in to the callpod chargepod Adapter (not the chargepod itself, mind you, but the car adapter *for* the chargepod) at various points, and the Callpod was the last charger it was plugged in to. I should know better... much better, but when I was out of town and needed a Mini-USB car charger, I grabbed it as it was the only Mini-USB charger that was on their shelf (and with a dead phone in the middle of a conference call, you can imagine the rush).
Chalk it up to experience but don't use their charger directly with your devices. All I can find for technical specs is that it is 6VDC from 12VDC, no info on the mA or A that it provides. Heads up.
Now I have a nice Diamond Touch on the way and a few weeks on the couch due to an upset wife and the Callpod adapter is being dismantled systematically to make me feel better.

PS. I know Li-ion batteries have circuits to manage the charging etc. But this is honestly the only thing I can figure is that somehow it was sending small surges down the line that eventually popped something in the circuit... feel free to pose other hypothesis to me if you have one.
Yes mate it can be done i have fixed a tomtom same plug you can order them online ,you need a very small tipped soldering iron (low wattage) search these forums for strip down guides for your phone good luck

Emulating a car dock !

Is anyone aware or the physical way to fool the desire to go into car dock mode either by rewiring a usb cable, or does it use the same magnetic sensor as the nexus, I currently use a boadit iPhone cradle that fits perfect and i have a charger mini usb cramped and srewed into the bottom, I would like to be just be able to drop it in and it go into the Navigator app and switch on bluetooth automaticly and kill both when i remove it ..
thanks

The droid/milestone used magnets to detect the dock, but the google car dock uses bluetooth and doesn't even use the usb cable (it uses the gold 3 bits on the bottom of the phone). I too wished you could do the same, but my brodit holder fit the phone so badly, I've decided to shell out and try the original car dock - just waiting for it to come.
Thanks for the reply, so the million dollar question is how does the desire's dock sense when its dropped in the cradle, any ideas people ? I read somewhere forgot now doh !! that it might be a case of grounding one of the data lines in the usb cable, can anyone confirm this ?
I'd like to know this too.. Dockmode/Cardockmode
Look at this thread - probably the id pin, but i need someone with the same charger and a multimeter to check some things
I have 2 chargers (work & home) that I use that plug directly into the wall, the one at home brings up Navigator where the one at work doesn't, so it must have to do with the pins in the USB connector.
Can you do some measurements with a multimeter on that charger that opens the navigator???
oh this sounds like what we wanna hear, my betting is one of the usb data lines gets grounded as ive mentioned before !!! plz test to see if more than one of the pins in the usb plu is being grounded .... pretty plz !! heh
Hey Guys,
yes it looks like the Desire can be fooled into thinking its connected to a car dock, my car charger seems to do it when the usb is not properly inserted.
I suspect HTC might release a car dock for the Desire. If not some one should really monopolise on the fact that this can be done.
I will be experimenting with it soon but currently have way to much uni work to finish for the end of the month
Ok went into the workshop and stripped the desire usb lead, I tried every combo of pulling the data lines to ground even both together, the installed navigator.apk didnt kick in , but looking at a reatime system dump i could see usbconnected and type(0) , type (1), type(2) had been triggered, on the differnt combo's i tested, why its not kicking in is anyones guess, maybe cas the Incredible navigator.apk is strictly configured for that device, guess the Incredibles navigators.apk has to be recompiled with new settings !!
I will try it with the cardock.apk tomorrow ripped from the nexus we might have more luck with that me thinks !!! fingers crossed !!!
Keep up the good work! I FINALLY get my Desire delivered tomorrow (after waiting 4.5weeks for stock!!!), so I can have a look at this too... let us know how you get on.
I'm interested in a homedock/multimediadock trigger as well as the car dock trigger. It should be included in the Desire as well as the cardock.
Here's an emulator that could be helpful in the process of developing a dockapp or finding out what's really happening..
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.net-geekherd-dockenabler-pBmD.aspx
I'll try to find the homedockingtrigger if there is any to use in my homemade dockstation
Hi
Wonder if there has been any progress on this? I'm keen to hack my Brodit active cradle to be a fake real dock!

Same here! Any progress?!
after upgrade to froyo, i pluged my car charger in my desire and the car mode icon showed up, even when the other end of the charger is NOT pluged in the lighter. I use a charger for my old HTC Diamond and added a little thing that convert a mini USB port (wich is on diamond) to a micro USB. And the cable on my charger is too short for me so it has been moded (extended) by my self, there is only two wire in the cable for power, so there must be something in the plug itself that triggers the car mode. if only plug the converter into Desire, nothing happened
It's the ID pin that needs to be connected to ground, as indicated in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=744636

[Q] Broken micro usb on g2

Wife's phone usb port is broke. It got mangled by a tough cord pull. It can't be straightened out. plastic is broken and contacts are mangled. After I did some research, I can see this issue happens on quite a few phones with micro usb such as the evo, but i have not seen too many people mention it about the g2.
Anyways, no warranty since I got the hardware from craigsist. Even if there was a warranty htc has not been covering this sort of damage on the evo.
From what i can tell there are a couple of possible fixes and a workaound.
fix one - new motherboard. too expensive
fix two - have a new replacement port soldered onto the existing board. i am not sure if this is worth it. i don't have much soldering experience, so i would probably have to send it somewhere. Does anyone have any idea of what that sort of thing would cost? is it pretty risky in terms of further damage to the board?
workaround - Get an external charger and possibly a second battery to reduce downtime while charging. This is probably what we will do for a while. Does anyone have a solid suggestion for an external charger for the g2? Is the battery the same format as other HTC phones such as the evo?
thanks!
Ah that sucks. From what i think if you know how to open the g2 then you wouldnt have a problem with fix 2 only thing i say is dont F..k up the motherboard lol... yoll have a fully broken phone. Dont know about fix 1.

If you don't need a working micro USB port for connecting to your computer, just pick up one of those power mats that charge your devices by just placing them on the mat.

I looked into the powermat product last night. As far as I could tell, it seemed like they didn't have one for the G2. In that case, they provide a workaround, but it sounds like it also requites a working port of some sort.
"If your specific device is not listed in Step 1, we currently do not have a receiver for your model. By choosing "other" your solution will include a wireless Powercube universal receiver with 7 tips to allow your device to charge on a Powermat mat."
"The Powercube Universal Receiver Allows you to Charge Hundreds of Devices Wirelessly
The perfect accessory to your mat. Seven Interchangeable tips (micro USB, mini USB, Samsung, LG, Apple, Nintendo DSi, Sony PSP) allow you to wirelessly charge hundreds of mobile devices using just one receiver. Works with all Powermat mats."
After reading that, it stops sounding wireless at all. The universal powercube is wireless to the powermat, but it needs to attach to the handset with a cord. Pretty silly for $100. maybe there are other companies besides powermat?
I found a great thread about sanding chintech batteries. I ordered the two pack plus charger and will peel and sand them. So for now, I will use the external charging workaround.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=945090
In the meantime, if anyone else has a broken usb microport issue, post up your experience here. The issue seems rampant in the evo's, but maybe not so much on the G2. It is a heck of a small plastic tab in there holding the contacts.
Or get one of those 2 batteries + 1 charger deals on ebay and charge one while you're out and when you run out of battery just swap it. That's what I do and I think it's a hell of a lot more convenient.
Just chiming in
I have the same problem, except my micro usb connector still functions very testily. I have to plug and unplug it several times, and the slightest of jostles will disconnect it. Charging is more reliable than tethering, and I definitely use tethering, as I don't have a wired broadband connection at home. I'd love to get this repaired, if it's not too costly or difficult, so I'm going to watch this thread. Thanks for the suggestions on getting an external charger and extra batteries. If my connector continues to deteriorate, it makes me feel very relieved to know I'll have a backup. Thank heavens this phone has an sdcard slot!
Tethering and file transfer can be accomplished over wifi with some apps. Look for wireless tether and the samba or ftp apps
This is planned obsolescence at its worst. The switch from mini-USB to micro-USB doesn't save any space and makes the plug VERY VERY delicate.
Personally, I would take it apart, unsolder the micro-USB socket from the board, solder in a new MINI-USB socket, and reassemble. It is relatively low risk, as long as you are careful while soldering (use proper desoldering wick to disassemble). Be sure that you don't use too strong a soldering iron -- about 15 watt, and be sure to use one that is GROUNDED (three prong plug).
Thats some good advice. I was not aware you could swap out the interface in that way.
It's actually not quite that simple to change interface. You would first need to find a mini-USB connector having the same alignment pegs (to help with strain relief) and pad spacing as the current micro-USB connector. You will also need to hack the chassis of the phone some as well (and even then, a mini-USB connector will still probably stick out slightly).
Despite what was stated earlier, although both mini-USB and micro-USB have about the same width, mini-USB connectors are significantly thicker (or taller) and slightly longer (as far as depth). Micro-USB actually does give a pretty nice space savings for a hardware designer and can be more robust in design depending on the actual connector used.
Probably easier to just try and find the same connector HTC used if you are going to go through the trouble of replacing it.
I like to know all the great advise I was also worried about this when I just had the EVO. But to transfer files you could use a sdcard slot adapter for your pc or one of those usb sdcard readers I had used that when rooting my g1 along time ago LOL. Thanks for the backup ideas

Thanks, soreyes I already use the wifi tethering now and then, but it really drains the battery and makes the phone very hot. In fact, I accidentally left my wifi tethering on overnight the other night and woke up to a dead battery and a radio that wouldn't work for half the day. I was actually worried I had fried my phone and turned it into an expensive PDA. After turning it off for about 8 hours, it worked fine again, thank goodness.
I definitely hadn't thought of FTP or samba for file transfer, but thanks for the suggestion. I hate taking out the battery to get to the sdcard, just to transfer a file or two.
Having this problem with a G2 as well
I started having charging issues a few months ago, before my warranty ended, but now, I'm screwed and the phone will not charge at all. I know it is not the battery.
I have a G2 from T-Mobile. I took it apart and it looks like the job to get the port off and replace it would not be simple.
Has someone actually completed that task?
Does anyone have the part number on the port? I see several very similar ones on ebay. (search for microUSB and android)
Or, has someone sent theirs off to be fixed out of warranty? I've seen a place called Mission Repair mentioned here and there on the web...
Thanks!
-g
I had always thought (if mine usb port broke) about trying these guys ( www.cellulardr.com ), i mean if your phone is not really working you could check them out to see if the price is right.
I know I sent my itouch off for screen repair and it was worth it.

You might consider buying one of those G2's on eBay with the broken screen, and swapping out the motherboard, then along with that you'd get all kinds of other spare parts, including battery etc.
I've never taken apart the phone, so can't attest to the difficulty, but I've seen a few guides around.
Update on repair options
So I called a local shop and they said that it was too complex of a procedure for them and referred me to Mission Repair in KS.
Called Mission and they said they get several calls a day from folks with G2's/Evos/and Desires with this exact problem. The guy said that in 80% of the cases it is not fixable without replacing the logic board because the issue is often that the logic board connectors break. This is a known issue with these similar HTC phones.
On the other side of things, I called HTC and it turns out these phones have a warranty from 15 months of manufacture, which T-Mobile did NOT inform us about. They said they will take the phone and fix it for free if i hadn't voided the warranty.
Now if only I hadn't open the phone up after the T-mobile rep told me there was no hope. *arg*

Car Charger Spec Query

i am looking for a decent [working, cheap and quick charging] car charger.
I know I'll need at least a 1amp [right?] however i have seen a few that charger at 1amp and 2.1amp
is it going to ruin my battery if i use 2.1amp?
anyone found and goodies out there?
thanks
I second this request, i've got a few generic car chargers from older gear that i've tried with the galaxy nexus. So far they all come up as charging via usb, and so the phone loses power when the navigation/bluetooth/etc/etc is all on. I understand the power requirements, and looked into the data-cable soldering malarkey solution, but my soldering skills in the "fire hazard" class at best so i'd much rather an off the shelf solution.
I'd be very grateful if anyone could point out a car charger that they know/strongly suspect works fine.
Cheers
so the same car charger i've been using for my nexus one for navigation won't work with the GNex?

No, but it won't charge the battery faster either.
More amps is fine. Your phone will only pull what it needs, even if more amps are available.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Also be aware that even though some car chargers state they can supply >1A current, some phones (like my Nexus One and Galaxy Nexus) will not recognize it as a high speed charger.
Smartphones and other devices check to see if the data pins (D+ and D-) are shorted or have a specific resistance before activating high-speed mode since normal USB data specifications say that devices should only pull <500mA from the port.
I have this one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002IW79ZC/?tag=68656c7064757-20, which is supposed to supply 1A, but I when I plug my phone in with a normal USB micro cable, it says it's charging through "USB" vs "AC", where "AC" is the high-speed charging.
I've made a hacked cable adapter, though, which has the data pins shorted. When I use this with the car adapter, it charges at full speed. You should check to be sure that your phone is fully utilizing the charger by going into the Settings > Battery menu.
Hi all,
I thought I'd share how I've gotten on. There's a 2.1a charger that maplins sell that I thought might do it, but alas no - still comes up as "Charging(USB)". I know taFFer solved the problem with a little solder, and a lot of forum threads also suggest the same fix, but the last time I picked up a soldering iron actually ended with a trip to A&E (long, embarrassing, story) so I was still keen to find an off the shelf solution.
Anyway, after reading a lot more forums, I found a few different people recommending the same motorola charger. Amazon UK sell it, so I stuck in an order. Details below:
MOTOROLA P513 MICRO USB IN CAR CHARGER, £5.45*
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000S5Q9CA
*above item(s) sold by and shipped from Keep Talking
It arrived today and sure enough simply plugging it into the car results in it appearing as Charging(AC). I've not gone on a long enough drive to know about charging speed when gps/bluetooth/etc is all going, but if anyone else is after a cheap car charger that just works without hacking your own cable I think this is the one.
Cheers
***EDIT***
After criss-crossing the country over the xmas period i can tell you this charger is working fine for me. Even when using all the gps, bluetooth, screen on, etc that i can muster (while still driving straight!) the phone gains power and would often come out the car more charged than when it went in. The charger has one annoyance - they've built in a blue led to the charger which is lit up the whole time the thing is plugged in and thats kind of distracting, i don't really know what they were thinking with that, but otherwise i've no complaints.

Car install Questions

Hello XDA members and fellow nexus 7 owners!
After reading these forums for months or even years i decided to get a Nexus 7 2013 myself. It took me a long time since they are not being sold that much in the Netherlands.
Upcoming Tuesday it will be shipped and i can not wait to be able and install it in the car.
Setup? ---- I am going to run the nexus 7 together with my 1 din car radio. Which means i wont be using a dac or anything else just spotify over bluetooth to the car stereo and that is it.
The only addition i would like to have is a backup cam since i am terrible at parking... go ask my rear bumper he will show it.
Now i know about rooting and all that but i would like to know which camera to buy. I have seen people using a easycap and i can get one on ebay. But which setup are you running or do you recommend me to get? Any ebay or aliexpress links will be appreciated. This way i can buy the stuff and know it will surely work.
And yeah i been searching through forum and reddit. But everyone is using a different setup of rom and hardware which just makes it confusing. I already have the usb otg cable and thats basically it.
Thanks in advance!
Prepare for a world of hurt. You'd need to find a real UVC adapter then start the app each time you want to back up.
UVC and EasyCap are terrible for start up times, 4 seconds to show on mine. Oh, EasyCap drivers aren't in the system by default, the need to be installed and loaded on boot with a script.
The latest thing on the Timur's forum was to use a USB camera. Problem with that for me was they're housing are terrible. not suited for cars at all.

Prepare for a world o... I already said that didn't I?
Are you using this in car only? The problem is the tablet can use power faster than it can charge, especially when using navigation.
Mine was fine for about a year then it started not keeping a charge. I did the battery removal mod and couldn't be happier.

I just dont understand how that battery removal mod works. Or what i should do to achieve the same thing. Not really a genius with eletrical work unless i see pictures of everything then it is easy ofcourse.
Seems like no one in holland has this lmao. O yeah and here its only 1 week hot outside like 30C max so i dont know if its needed.
It's not so much a heat thing as the battery will drain in use. It simply can't charge fast enough. I had the problem even through winter.
I guess I left out the part where I should've mentioned to use it with the battery and see if there's an issue.
There's info but not great info on the removal mod. It's straight forward but it need "large" wiring and a power supply over 1.8amps.
Hook everything up, without installing right away, and get a feel for it. All the little details will show itself.

Again you are so right! I have had the car install now some days and it drains more than it charges xD the gps is also bad which sucks. But using waze it goes into -200 mA and with only spotify on and no navigation to +150 mA. I will really need to check that battery removal mod. How did you do that? do you have some old pics laying around or a scheme? I even tested 2 new car chargers i bought 24w 4.8a and neither that keeps it charging pfft. And this with medium settings on screen brightness

What do you mean "GPS sucks?" As it doesn't lock on satellites, or it just drains the battery more?
The battery removal mod is pretty straight forward.
You'll need an adjustable 12v power supply that puts out over 2 amps adjusted to 4.4v. This is the one I have: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C0KL1OM/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Find an old power supply you have lying around, like for a router, and use those wires. If they're too thin the tablet will be unstable.
I'd probably look for an extra battery online in case you want to revert. And this is the part photos are needed.
I'm having problems finding the ones I saw when I did it. I'll look some more and if I can't find them I'mm take some myself the weekend.
It just involves separating the battery from it's controller and soldering the voltage regulator in place of the battery. The ground has to connected to one of the tiny black wires at the controllers connector and it's done.
I wired the voltage regulator into my radio's constant power supply and I still use a charger to the micro USB to turn it on and off.
-edit: oh yeah. here's the video from the guy that discovered the mod: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9N2Bh4fI8Bo

Thanks again for your reply. I just checked that video it seems doable.
With gps i ment the lock on satellites. I found someone who was using a kind of re radiator if that is what it is called and im thinking of buying one.
I think i will just start soldering and doing that battery removal trick. Do you think i could do it and just plug it into a anker car charger? It is 5v 2.4a each slot. This is the one https://www.anker.com/products/variant/powerdrive-2-ports/A2310012
Or should i go for a dc to dc regulator as you have? I have currently 3 of those car chargers laying around all different brands but same watts.
Here's a photo someone else posted just the other day. The second wire is ran better than I did: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=76554736&postcount=464
I use a 5v supply when I work on my tablet in the house, but I've heard 5v could cause problems with the tablet not recognizing when power is connected to the micro usb.
My GPS was terrible at first. Long lock times, if it locked, would drop satellites spontaneously then come right back. I even bought an external USB receiver. Then it just started working.

I guess there is just 1 way to find out if the car charger works hehehe i will give it a shot see what i manage to do. Still looking for a housing or anything to mount the tablet in for my car a renault megane II from 2003. Seems like i will have to mold and fiberglass it.
