Am I the only one who is bloody damn tired of opening a thread that appears on the first page of a forum, thinking it is new, only to find that it is six, eight, ten months old?
Wouldn't it be reasonable to have a column in the forum listings that indicates the original posting date of each thread, so that just because someone posted to a five-year old thread, which bumped it to the first bloody page of the forum, we don't have to waste time reading old news?
Ideally, old threads would just fade away to page two, then three, then four, etc. until they ride off into the sunset. What sense does it make for them to take center stage six months after their birth, just because some noob comes along and posts a "downloading now" to LVSW's WM 6 v. 0.1?
Ah, that felt good. Thanks for letting me vent. That means I won't have to stalk the dark, foggy streets around the port of Miami looking for another victim.
Ben
I mostly agree with you Ben. I look at the number of replys and views to try to determine how old a thread is. Then comes the bouncing from page to page to find the posts I haven't seen yet.
I'll admit that I'm new to XDA, so maybe there's a way of only showing the unread threads and/or posts? Then again, sometimes the older posts jog my memory about what is being discussed.
Guess with such an active message board, these sorts of issues come up. Anyone have tips they'd like to share on dealing with it?

The approach you suggest sounds like the AT&T forum one where threads get closed when they reach a certain age. This is not the approach here. In fact we actively encourage members NOT to start new threads if an old one exists. Who wants new threads on the same thing springing up all over the place (though it seems to happen anyway!). It is a pain when searching if numerous threads turn up on the same subject - and of course there may be good info in each one but not all in the same one.
I would only make one or two exceptions to the "search and use an existing thread" rule and that might be where a thread has become dozens of pages long or has become spoiled in some way or other

Michael, it's an honor to have a reply from you. I always enjoy your posts.
And no, you will not become one of my victims around the foggy port of Miami. Aberdeen, perhaps Actually, it is rarely foggy in Miami. Come on over and enjoy the nice weather, friend.
I take your point. However, what about the idea of a column showing the original posting date? Or, could that date somehow be made to show up in the balloon when one places the cursor over the thread's title?
I wasn't really suggesting closing out a thread, Michael. Just letting them drift to the back of the line, perhaps. But even that is not necessary. Let them come to the front page when someone posts to them, that's just dandy. But let us know that they are a week old, or a year old.
Cheers for your contributions to the fora, Michael.
By the by, PLEASE do not accuse me of proposing something that emulates the AT&T forum! Ugh. That will bring out the Mr. Hyde in me. I had a terrible experience there with the appropriately named Mod Moose over a year ago and have not been back sinece
@gavink, thank you for your reply, too. This issue is a pet peeve of mine. It doesn't seem to bother many members, though, so it looks like we will have to live with it. A very old thread can have many, many posts, or very few, by the way, so that's no help.
Regards,
Ben

Miami I know is fabulous - not that I've been there. Weather is undoubtedly better than here - althoughwe do like our Scots mist now and again, provided we get a decent summer.
I can suggest this to site Admin. I agree that some threads eg early threads speculating about the price of the Tilt/Kaiser are pretty usless now. Presumably though these threads just die naturally. If a thread has new posts, why does it matter what date the original post was? Just curious about this 'cos quite often I refer people to threads I and others made over a year ago - if the answers were good then, most often they still are - don't you think?
Hah! I too have fallen foul of Mod Moose. I did go back though (not often). There was a time when the mere mention of XDA on the AT&T forum was seen as something worthy of cruel and un-natural punishment.
Possessing a "pet peeve" is a breach of forum rules. In accordance with the new policy on stronger Moderation you are ordered to be a happy, contented person. Mind altering drugs are available via download from the FTP - should they be required.

Hello, again, Mike:
As always, your replies are cogent and witty. Large sums, indeed. Please, let it be in US $, not Euros, eh? Be kind.
Well, yes, Miami is pretty fabulous. If you ever get over here, please let me know ahead of time, and we will open our house to you.
OK, I am not requesting any threads be deleted, or even re-ordered. If it were possible, all I would like to see is the date of the original posting. This would help us to avoid wasting time reopening a thread we saw six months ago. For those of my generation, who cannot remember what we did ten minutes ago, this would be very helpful.
Making the original date of the first post available just seems to make sense to my time- and whisky-addled brain. Not to be able to see the date is like publishing an old news article and hiding the date.
From the traffic on this thread, or, more accurately, paucity thereof, I guess it doesn't amount to a hill of beans, so I am going to go pour myself a wee drap of the Glenlivet now and then forget about the whole damn thing. (You see, like you, Mike, I too like the Scots "mist")
But before I sign off, forgive me the breach of forum rules. With the cup of Glenlivet, I shan't be needing any other mind-altering drugs, however.

One last observation that has absolutely nothing to do with nothing. Your country's flag, (displayed in your personal information at the top of your e-mails, is practically identical to the U.S. and British Navy signal flag "M." And "M" when spoken in those Navy's, and the international phonetic alphabet, is "Mike."
You have a right to be doubly proud when you see your flag, Mike.
Cheers, brother Michael!
Ben
Mike, I think we have lost the rest of the "crowd" that were already not looking at this thread. Ah, well.
The history and pictures of the whisky mills were an absolute treat. It's amazing how rustic they seem (the sheds, that is)! Thanks for sending those. I will put them into my archive. I really would like to see them in person some day. Made it to London once, but that was a long time ago, and it's not Scotland, where some of my ancestors came from (along with some from Eire.)
I've not run across Macallan. Now I have a mission to find it.
That last picture is a gem. Give me the guy's contact information. From the looks of things, I don't suppose he has an e-mail, eh? I would buy a case of his brew without thinking twice, ha, ha!
As to the "Mike" flag, just Google "Navy Signal Flags." You are in for a treat when you see Scotland's proud flag identified as "Mike. Here is a table that shows both the flags and their phonetic names:

Thank you, Michael. Nothing should be done if there is a cost in money or time. Clearly, not many people are very worked up about about the issue.
Kind regards
Ben
You've a good sense of humor, Mike. Uh, is the photo typical of how the Scots bring up their wee ones? No wonder they are such a feisty bunch
Cheers
Ben
Well, well, well. Methinks you have to much time on your hands, Mike. Of course, here's Ben answering you, so who am I to talk?
Check out my new avatar. I was going to use this when I joined the forum, but never got around to it. The website photo you sent me was too much to resist.
In spite of my age, as revealed now by my mugshot, I still have a bit of "bong" left. I have been feeling less "feisty" the past few months, however. Reading the article you sent, now I understand. Big Ben had lost its "bong."
Not sure those workers scurrying around the face of my, uh, inspiration are going to do much for me, though. Perhaps if one of them were "bonnie Jean" from "the streets of Aiberdeen...."
Ben
(There go my chances of getting my "original post date" request implemented by our dear Webmistress, eh?)
Should there be a dedicated section where all xda-members can submit their stuff through a pre-defined form? Like with the following features:
Subcategories
for themes: WM 6.5, Titanium, Sense, WAD, Mobile Shell, lockscreen, boot animations, icons etc.
for ROMs: per device (every device gets its own subcategory)
Pre-defined fields, for example
compability (WM 5, 6, 6.5, 6.5.3)
resolution (QVGA, WVGA etc.)
CAB install (yes/no)
for ROMs: build, free RAM etc.
Filter by fields (for example only WM 6.5.3 and QVGA)
additionally presets for common devices, like WM 6.5 and WVGA for HD2 (already implemented in the current frontpage)
Rating system (which should not be placed in some drop-down nearly out of view like on the forums)
Sort by rating, views last x days, last update etc.
Featured entries which show up on front page
Provide file hosting space
I think you get the idea, it's vaguely similar to freewarepocketpc.net. The main benefit would be that it's a lot easier, especially for new people, to find the things they're looking for, and a forum thread isn't exactly the best and easiest-to-maintain way to show off your apps/themes/ROMs. Fields additionally ensure consistency among all posts.
Also, right now the more posts, the more attention a thread gets. This poses the problem that, for example, an app where many users post to report a problem gets more attention than another app where everything just works fine, as only a small minority bothers to post a "thank you". As almost no one rates threads (on the average there is less than one rating for 10,000 views) and even fewer people sort threads by views or rating, these apps (or themes or whatever) do not get the attention they deserve. With a rating system and the ability to sort by it, this problem could be solved.
Of course, the implementation of such a system could be somewhat challenging. I only want to hear what others think of this idea.
What do you think? Like the idea or not? Leave a comment and vote, thanks !

No seriously, good idea. The more active a post is, the more visitors it will get. Lots of good stuff after page 10 of the dev category aswell haha.
Yep, not only that but also the consistency and accessability, especially for new people, will be a great advantage. I also contacted svetius and he seems to like this idea, so I hope this will be done in the future. Thanks for your support guys!

We need to put this in our Sigs who has photoshop (He says to the theme designer )
I think it's a great idea - especially for noobies. I don't have developers skills but have learned much over the years just reading and browsing threads. Enough to even add some simplistic help here and there. But most people don't have time to look through many threads hoping to find some glitter of gold they are looking for. This might slow down the "Is there an app for this?" threads. Not everyone has time to just sit and browse but those of us who want to might not have so many uninformative threads to look at.
I would suggest a link to the initial thread where support could be given and all the "Thank you" responses kept in the new posting. And with all the needed information posted up front it might also stop all the "Will this work on my XXXX?
Hope it can happen!
That´s a great idea, I miss this database here..would help a lot!
A very good idea to have a database here & it's references!
yeah it would be great
We've gotten many requests for this, and it's clearly something we would like to do. There are two (obvious) issues:
1. Figuring out the best implementation method -- Can we somehow use Wordpress (which is what the portal runs on now)? If not, what CMS? Exactly how should the database be structured? That's not exactly a simple question given all the different permutations of devices/operating systems/resolutions that are supported by different software.
2. Figuring out how to keep it updated -- Do we rely on the devs to post their creations both in the forums and the database? Or do we have volunteers scan the forums daily to pull stuff into a app database? That sounds like a boring job . Anyway, we don't want to spend the time building something unless we have a sustainable and affordable model for keeping it going.
Anyway, if anyone is serious about helping us implement something (conceptual design, development, etc), send me a detailed PM. Or we can discuss it here.
As it is, this is definitely on my list to figure out, but there are also 5 or 6 other things (some front-end stuff like the forum re-design and other back-end server stuff). Plus to the extent all these projects have some cost, we like to spread them out.
1. I don't think WordPress, as a blogging tool, is suited for something like this. Drupal, with the module CCK, provides this kind of funtionality out of the box, and you won't need to worry about how the database is structured. Then we'd just need a custom theme (perhaps the same ones who are currently redesigning the forum).
2. If new things are only posted in the new section, then a forum thread with a summary, link etc. should be created automatically in the right subforum. So, threads will only be used for discussion, not for presentation.
For any further discussion of this idea, I'd like to suggest we keep it in this thread, so everyone can see it and comment.
Great idea! As already mentioned, I guess the maintenance/upkeep would be the sticking point.

YES! I'd strongly recommend Joomla and DocMan or any other similar component. I've used it successfully on other sites and it's terrific.
app store, what a great idea!
Recently we've been the target (via PM and email) of a coordinated effort by some users to get XDA to add an iPhone forum. This intensified a bit recently with the "jailbreaking is legal" news that came out a few weeks ago. We also recently “lost” a behind-the-scenes guy at XDA to the iPhone (someone who had donated countless hours to helping with site development and bug fixes).
Despite his pleading, some of the mods and I decided earlier this month that xda-developers is NOT the place for detailed iPhone discussion. There's just too much going on here. XDA is still digesting the move to add non-HTC WinMo/Android devices. And the site is just too darn big already!
With all that said: many of you know that we also own the iPhone-Developers.com domain. It was purchased years ago—mostly as a joke. Now, with the maturation of the iPhone community (in particular, the independent developer and jailbreak community) we are going to dust it off and launch an XDA sister site. The goal is to try to replicate the XDA feel while keeping XDA itself free of iPhone-related clutter. We see it as a win/win for everyone (iPhone lovers and haters alike). The aim of the site is to demystify jailbreaking and to make iPhone development more mainstream. Millions of people have benefited from the development work that has taken place at XDA over the last decade, and we want to bring these same benefits to iPhone owners.
If you are excited by this move, please keep your expectations in check: The site will be totally separate from XDA (separate mods, servers, everything) and will probably be somewhat "Wild West" to start out (like XDA in the early years). We have assigned a new admin—the former XDA tech volunteer referenced above. His user name is Arbre, and he also is doing all the tech development for the site. He hopes to have it launched (at least in beta form) in September.
We are looking for a few people to help get things started in the new forums. If you’ve got any jailbreak/development experience on the iPhone and want to help out just PM Arbre and he’ll get in touch with you when we’re closer to a beta launch.
PM'd him already
Is there anyway to make a poll to see if anyone else is interested to the success of iphone-developers.com?
I already feel as though making another forum for iphone users is redundant since there is already tons of other ones light-years ahead on the web.
Think about how many successful "xda" look-a-likes are out there **Coughs... htc-pedia** <<-- NotMuch.
I just don't think it will be worth the effort, to be honest. Is there another thread where others are discussing this?

Maybe you're right. But the launch of the site has been totally funded by a donor. We hope we create a somewhat unique vibe over there. But if not, then it hasn't hurt anyone.

As the one who is actually building and running iphone-developers, I can tell you that for me it is definitely worth the effort. To even have the chance at creating something like xda for the iphone is incredibly exciting.
The only reason I got svetius and the site owners to consider this project in the first place was because of the number of requests we've gotten to add iphone forums -- it turns out a lot of xda users have iphones, and many have even switched altogether. Creating a new site for these people makes a lot of sense (to me at least).
Plus, as svetius said, there is really nothing to lose by trying. I'm the one bearing all of the work, and if you're not interested in apple products then xda will be the exact same as usual
-- Arbre
I'm just wondering if you are going to bridge the two sites together, so that registered on one is registered on the other etc.

I'm slowly porting my apps (adding some more bling) to the iPhone with flash CS5, only made a beta of flashlight so far, but was hopping for the greatness of a XDA forum-like to "bind" all scatered users out there, in a way that only XDA can.

There are of course many other iPhone sites around as indeed there are for WM / Android etc. Included in that there is also a range of good and poor quality. However, we often talk about our "Community" here at xda-devs and this combined with good quality content is what defines a good forum site. Creating, the right atmosphere combined with quality content is what will also make or break a new iPhone site. It really doesn't matter about the volume of other sites if you can create a better feel in a new site people will move.
We should also not forget that there has been a 200% rise in the smartphone market over the past year and 93% of that has come from the iPhone. Consequently there is a vast and ever increasing number of potential members who have not established a loyalty to already existing sites.
Good luck to Arbre in getting this going, though I'm sure he doesn't need it

It is defiantly possible, and several sites exist today that show off that ability. I am glad you are looking into the option, as that will boost the amount of people who are active there.
Looking forward to seeing this go live! Hopefully it will encompass the same community feel that XDA has nurtured and grown
Plus if XDA members who are interested in the iPhone also register with the IPD forum, we will bump into members with whom we may already be acquainted So we will have a ready made 'starting' community!

Hello,
I am serious considering to take back my HTC Trophy 7 because of the amount of bugs this device has. It rather feels like a prototype then a final result.
How the **** can Microsoft take so long to develope a Operating System and deliver it in this state. The product itself came with a lack of features. But even those minimal amount of features that are now their are full with bugs.
Marketplace crashes, Zune crashes. Random reboots. But today I have encountered the most strange bug I have ever encountered in a phone. I call someone, and I get someone completely else from my contact list on the phone. I send someone a text message, and yet again it gets sended to a completely diffrent person. I have deleted the person and re-added him. Yet again the same bug.
What the ****. I paid 480 euro for this phone. A phone which cannot call or text-message propperly on of the most basis principes of a phone. When I e-mail Microsoft they tell me to go to HTC. But in the end it is software from Microsoft that is failing. And not HTC.
Also the lack of giving any public updates about the bugs and what to do about them is also quite annoying me. At least make a announcement.
Anyway what do you guys think of WP7? And did any of you encountered the contact switch bug yet?
Personally I haven't encountered the random contact calling issue and it's the first time I read about it to be honest.People had some random reboots or some screen tearing which occured few times at a a couple of days or so.
By the way you speak you obviously have a faulty device and I suggest you get it replaced'm.
I have almost two weeks with my phone (HD7) and I had only 2 times the screen tearing issue, just 2 reboots (those being caused by eBay app anyway) and several times when Marletplace crashed or IE did the same. I'm using the last two almost daily and I didn't get bothered with the issues so it happened rare also.
It seems that whatever bug you may encounter a soft reset/reboot of the phone will get you rid of the problem (at least for a time) and I am VERY happy about it.
Just check the iPhone 4 forum for example if you really want to see persistent bugs
I am pretty sure the early 11 update will fix most of these .

Erm dude, these obviously aren't OS faults, or MS would never have put it out - and even if they had, everyone would be experiencing the same problems, as we are all running the exact same version of the exact same OS, just on different devices. I have not encountered a single one of the faults that you have mentioned.

maybe that 1 post was sarcasm, but he has been trolling the wp7 forums the last couple of days.
There is a fine line between sarcasm and trolling and the amount of posts he has here pushes him across the line.
some examples of his wisdom (all posted on different wp7 threads):

The fact that people are trying so hard to put down an OS so hard to me shows they are intimidated by competition in the market. The fact it gets to people so much shows MS has a quality product and these people are scared they wont have the latest and greatest without going to MS after years of slating them. It takes a bigger person to admit they where wrong it takes a moron to just jump on forums for phones they have no intention of getting just to shoot there mouth off.
@OP:
480€ for a Trophy ?! Jeez...
Got my Trophy last week and the only problem to date is the Marketplace hanging once in a while, nothing major that won't be solved in the next patch (along with an array of other bugs). Contatcs work great, all my email accounts are syncing, calling and SMS'sing is just fine and all the small issues and stuff missing, is just something I can live with and know will be handled in the future.
If you don't like the phone, exchange it or even better yet ask for a refund, you are clearly not ready for WP7 yet.

People are telling you SMS works, contacts works, syncing works and people have been using perfectly working WP7 phones since launch, so you need to start looking at other possible causes of your problems, before pointing a finger at the OS.
No one is denying it has bugs, lacking features and ways of doing stuff that most of us are still getting used to. Just take a good look around the posts and you will see that.
Ok you have issues with that particular phone. The Trophy has met quite a few problems (mostly hardware based) and you need to look at your own phone first. Do a hard reset, trying syncing contacs from a different account or method. If all that fails, report the problem to your vendor and replace/return the phone, its not that a big deal.
At least not something that requires a forum whine.

So it's a rule here, once somebody criticizes WP7 bugs, flaming appears........

We already have a topic about the bugs, and as already advised, made a bad choice, return and end.
It is very sad that as we get watching the threads on account of aggressive postures.
Negative comments about the WP7 can be made, however, turn that attacks between users can not occur.
No sense in getting started this thread, as it always going to have to defend the OS and others that attack, the initial comment was based on one bad experience and was well placed.
After that there were trolls, flames, etc..
If people are intelligent and coherent clearly no foul language want to report problems with their appliances WP7, report here:The WP7 list of BUGS' Thread
But please, polite and responsible.
This thread is closed.
Like many of us, I'm not a big fan of these recent dramatic changes. At least make an option for us to still use the older one like Reddit does.

Tbh I don't think this is possible, because xda has undergone such an overhaul, even the thank meter system and the title system has been changed. Having the older version would mean to recreate it so it embraces all the new stuff here, it could happen but that's very unlikely since it's hard work, and the vast majority of the members actually like this revamped version. Give it a day or two and I think you'll get used to it
This is not going to be possible, but we do have a classic theme if you want an older look.
Yeh, need to move forward into the unknown!
The Classic theme helps....
Aw goly, not liking this new site.
Particularly don't like that the most recent threads under their respective sections can't be seen.
If this could be brought back it would be appreciated.
There is no more "old way" anymore, they migrated and moved all the content from the old site to the new site so as far as I am aware, the "old" site is gone. I personally don't like it yet, but with anything new, comes change, and time to get used to it. I am sure in time we will all have a better experience once they finish the migrations and we all get used to it.
I also noticed I cant edit the posts yet (or I cant find a way to do it) in the new system, so I hope its a bug that gets fixed because I make numerous grammar issues the first round (trying to get the info out of my brain tends to be funky the first round), then I clean it up but only when I can edit my post. This could simply be a user error, or possibly an ID10T error.
The amount of work it would take to maintain two completely separate codebases wouldn't be worth the hassle at all.
As for "like Reddit does":
They are owned by a massive company, they can afford to maintain the old site for at least a bit while they build the newer site out. XDA doesn't have the manpower or server power to do that.
It's only temporary, Reddit isn't gonna keep the old site around forever. Just like YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook when they did massive redesigns a couple years ago, the old site eventually shut down once they migrated 90-100% of the functionality over.

Yeah I get that small team etc. But no one does an overnight overhaul with half of the features missing/not working. Even mobile app stopped working including the official app. That is very unprofessional. Most sane people would have them both side by side, for sometime, while fixing bugs on the new site and new app. This way users can still have a nice user experience, while getting familiar with newer website transition.
But, well what can I say, XDA is not my company. They can do whatever the heck they want.

On individual forum it's not displaying the lastest post info on the main page forcing you to open each section. The global new posts section works fine.
Doesn't display the user stats on the poster's post as before; more blank, unused dead space.
The "thanks" is all goofed up.
Rather have a smart complicated gf than a pretty dumb one... as their beauty rapidly fades as you get to know them.
Im fine with the overhaul but come on, where are the files attachments on other posts? where are the links? if you will left those, then better shut down this BS forum.

You should know that you are only seeing the tip of the iceberg. This change didn't happen overnight. There was a significant userbase testing the new XenoForo interface for months prior to release so they did exist side by side. Thing is, a testing environment is never the same as the real deal so at the official launch so of course some quirks came up. If anything, you can say they have been working in a very professional manner to work those out. In the first 24 hours after releasing most major issues were already resolved. The biggest one right now is probably still some posts/threads missing. Change is never easy

The changes were announced a long time ago and the announcement was highlighted on top of every section of every subforum. Which are you missing anyway? I see my attachments (like this one) are still present. Mind that the migration is still not 100% complete yet.
