COM4 dissapeared - P3300, MDA Compact III ROM Development

Hi,
I use an MDA Compact III with the official T-Mobile WM6 ROM (dutch). After installing Trackr (www.trackr.nl) software I'm facing a serious problem: my internal GPS seems to be missing. In some GPS software I can still see COM4, but in Google Maps (for example) COM4 is missing. I've set the Windows Mobile GPS setting off, to avoid conflicts. I never use more than one GPS program at the time. Whether COM4 is visible or not, none of the GPS applications can connect to the internal GPS.
Is there a way to reset the COM4 port, so I can access the GPS again? I uninstalled Trackr and did several soft-resets, but nothing is working?
Thanks for your advice,
Wouter

Hi Wouter,
What version of trackr! did you use? The most current versions try to detect the MDA Compact III and avoid issues you describe by automatically disabling the GPS auto-detect option.
When using the GPS auto-detect option on your device in older trackr! versions, issues you describe might happen. This is caused by an external component used to access GPS devices. More information about this can be found here: http://www.geoframeworks.com/forum/Topic1253-45-1.aspx#bm1270 :
"GPS.NET will modify the "ActiveDevice" key with the Prefix and Index which it finds during detection. The keys starting with "GPSOne" will not need to be modified. Here are the typical steps a user would need to perform to restore their registry:
1) First, delete the "Control Panel Configured Device" key created by GPS.NET:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver\Control Panel Configured Device
2) Second, the Index and Prefix values underneath the "ActiveDevice" key should be set to "4" and "COM"
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver\ActiveDevice "
To be sure, first backup your registry before making changes to the registry.
I hope this will fix the issues you have. I also hope you will still give trackr! a try by downloading the latest version. I'm sorry for the problems experienced by you.
Finally: please try to contact the people at trackr! first before posting your question here. They are more than willing to try to help you with any problems you might have.
Regards,
Marco

Solution for Navman GPS

Please get the file http://www.angeltowns.com/town/bluetooth/EnableCharPin.zip
- Copy the file EnableCharPin.exe to you PDA
- Start the bonding dialog until you get the password screen
- Now launch the explorer and start the executable (you will get a small message)
- Get back to the password screen (if you don't find it click on the BT icon in the today screen)
- Characters are now enabled
To Gary: I replied to your mail but I get the following error: The destination server for this recipient could not be found in Domain Name Service (DNS). Please let me know if this solution works for you.

i need your help with the bt patch
Hi,
I have downloaded the file from
http://www.angeltowns.com/town/bluetooth/EnableCharPin.zip
and looked for the exe file, to run in my xda2.
The exe is a PC installer (didn't work in my xda - not a valid win32 app...)
I finished the installtion process, and now in my add / remove programs i have "Bluetooth Character Password Enabler".
But when i'm trying to bond with my Navman,
still only numbers can be entered.
Any idea?
(maybe someone have the EXE to run on my ppc, not the installer?)
Thanks in advance,
Tomer
This is a bit unclear, I used towa´s patch like said earlier, followed exactly the instructions and could enable the charpin, and enable my navman
just download and COPY the patch to your xda true activ sync or whatever, and the start the bonding procedure, and when the screen for the pasword comes up, you lanch the explorer on your xda look for the charenable pin, click on it, it will give the message charpin now enabled, close the explorer and type in NAVMAN in big font, and it works perfect.
let us know if you got it to work
Thanks for you quick response.
I tried to do the process as explained:
copyed the file EnableCharPin.exe into my ppc
(via active sync), turned on my navman,
start BT, look for devices, found the navman gps one, next,
and now when the password screen appears i went to "my documents", clicked on the file, and than the error message 'EnableCharPin' is not a valid Pocket PC application" appears.
Any idea?
I saw a post in the forum about registry key or hack, to enable it,
whithout further information.
Thanks,
Tomer
Problem with EnableCharPin
The work that has gone into tying to solve the issue is impressive.
Unfortunately I have the same experience with the response 'EnableCharPin' is not a valid Pocket PC application'
Does anyone have a way to accomplish inputting alpha characters via changes in the registry?

I have NAVMAN GPS and have the same error. Can anyone explain how is it possible that one can run Windows installer on XDA??
I have just installed this WIDCOMM BT manager. This thing at least is not asking for any pincode so I can easily establish the connection but later on i am not getting any data on the port. I am using ArcPad application by ESRI and I am supposed to use port 8 for GPS.
Can anyone tell me why there is no data comming thru the port?
Another problem is that the connection is lost after few minutes...
it works 4 me now
I did hard reset (upgraded my os / radio to 1.66.00 , 1.10.00)
disabled multilingual support,
installed the exe (FROM MY PC, NOT FROM THE DEVICE ITSELF),
and it solved the problem.
In the pairing process I managed to write NAVMAN (capital letters!),
without any problem
I hope it helps...

Re: it works 4 me now
Hey Tomer !
Thanks for your tip. I have had problems with the connection, but I used your tip, and now it works perfect.

Navman bonding
I dont have a problem getting the XDA II to bond with it, the problem I have is I can only select Com 7 in the Bluetooth tools menu and when I go to set up the GPS in Smartst it wont let me select Com 7.
Anyone have any ideas
I have a XDA and a Navmann 4100. A couple of weeks ago my Navmann dealer sent me the patch EnableCharPin & BTHTools1012 and I started the bond between the PPC and the 4100 and all went fine but a couple of days ago I suffered and full reset on the ppc and now I can not bond the ppc and the 4100 anymore.
Can someone tell what shall I do to bond once again the ppc and the 4100?
I have tried several times with the same process as before (EnableCharPin & BTHTools1012) but I had no succes, the ppc does not allow me to write Navmann, it only lets me write numbers.

I had this same problem when I had to do a hard reset with mine couldnt get it to rebond. The only way I managed it was to re install the character enable program. It seems to be specific on which order you do it unfortunately I cant remember what it was. I had to try it a few times myself for it to work.
The way I have managed to do it in the past is to make sure the PPC device is connected to your PC via active synch when you attempt to enter the characters (NAVMAN) That seems to in some way enable the enablecharaterpin software on the PPC. Let me know how you get on.

Hi Rudey
Hard to say... I believe that a guy called towa wrote this for PPC, but if you look up his user name here and e-mail or PM him he might know
Hope that helps

Bluetooth manager doesn't start until I soft reset

Hi all,
I have a strange problem: bluetooth manager works fine after a soft reset. I can my PPC the whole day and it will always start normally (read: the screen that shows BT shortcuts shows up). The problem occurs when I turn off the phone over night (flight mode). The next day I can't get the BT manager to show the shortcuts screen - BT can be switched on and off but neither the BT manager or the BT settings screen will show up (there is no error message!!!). After I do a soft reset everything starts working...
Has anyone come across this kind of a problem in the past? I couldn't find anything using search on this forum...
My device info is (DutchRetail ROM):
ROM: 1.40.00 WWE
Radio: 1.13.00
Ext ROM: 1.40.556 WWE
I have tried uninstalling almost all extra software that I have installed after a hard reset but the issue is still here.
Thanks for all suggestions on what else I can try.

Yep, I get exactly the same problem :-(

Do either of you have Goodlink software on your device?
same problem no goodlink
Same problem but no goodlink software
I also get another funny problem where sometimes I go to connect to my bluetooth access point from my phone and it just has the little pie icon saying it's doing something, then it stops and it hasn't connected (the connection icon stays the same) and I can't make any sort of connection. It then does this everytime I try to connect.
I don't know how i fix it, but I combination of many soft resets various flight mode turn ons and fiddling it eventually works. It's very frustrating and it's happened on every software version. Right now i"m running 2.04.00. I have a CDMA from Telecom NZ running radio HA_01_151 right now (but I've tried other radios).
Somebody else had this problem I noticed but nobody replied to his posts.
I've got the same problem I hope someday that someone makes a fix for it. I run the XDA IIs BlueAngel 1.40.00 Asian O2 ROM WWE. =/.
Same problem here - only solution I had was to go into settings/memory and then stop all programs running - then the bluetooth manager appears without the need for a softboot..
Pain in the arse. :!:

I do and I have the same problem. I've been suspecting that it may have something to do with that because when I reset and I can start the manager just fine before I start Goodlink, but after I start goodlink it's a pain. Once, I tried to start BT manager then it didnt... i forgot all about it then suddenly some 11 hours later it just popped up by itself. Goodlink had been running continuously.
Any ideas???
I sometimes have the same effect.
What I usually do to resolve it (without soft reset):
- I installed PocketNav (kills programs which run in the background)
- I select 'Close all but Ative' in PocketNav
Then the Bluetooth Manager works again.
Hope it helps.

This is due to memory limitation in WM2003SE. When it finds that the memory is not sufficient it wont run Bluetooth Manager or Wifi. I had this problem a lot until i have shifted to WM5 which has more than 100 mb when the device starts. I guess that is why M$ has built WM5 for that reason and also for persisten storage of course.
The "memory limitation" is indirectly the problem. The Goodlink, which is more than three times the memory hog as any other 3rd party app out there, is the direct problem. I could write a college discertation on the amount of bugs in this awful software. And yes, it is good for push email...but at the expense of everything else that is good about these multimedia devices we own. The typical "close-when-you-tap-the-X" software utilities don't shut down Goodlink on my device even though they successfully shut down every other software I own (over 40 titles). So I have to use MemMaid to kill its process. But Goodlink will restore itself in a matter of minutes as it ventures out to the server looking to synch mail, calendar, contacts. If there was ever a reason to bring back public hangings, it would be for the Goodlink windows OS development team.
I don't really see any issues with Goodlink eating my memory. Then again, I've converted from a strictly fun user to a strictly business user so the whole gaming and multimedia thing doesn't quite do it for me anymore.
Steiner,
I tried PocketNav to see if it would truly close GoodApp.exe. Although it does seem to shut the application down, the 6+MB exe still is open in memory. Using MemMaid it shows that it never really closes.
I also didn't have the Goodlink software installed . My solution to the problem was: I installed the Sprite Backup software and set it to automatically restart my PPC @ 6 am after creating a backup. So in a way, this problem was very benifical to me - I now have a fresh backup of all the software every morning and the device reboots every morning without my intervention (no BT errors, no WiFi errors, etc).

WM5 GPS application - iGuidance compatibility?

Hi
Does anyone know how to setup IGuidance to work with WM5? I dont know how to work the BT ports at all. In 2003se, i could use the "scan" for bt data and it'd find the itrek gps unit but now it results in "no gps found". alternatively, what other gps software will work other than tomtom? I dont have tomtom =(
I've got version 2.1 and it seems to work with WM5. I add the gps to the bluetooth and then I create an incoming and outgoing port. I set my gps to port 6. In IGuidance it won't detect the gps but if you manually choose port 6 it will work just fine.
Andy
iGuidance 2.1.3 locks up my Wizard after several minutes. Grrr...
I am having all sorts of trouble with my PDA2K (WM5) and iGuidance. Although I think it has more to do with my bluetooth than anything. When I first started trying to get it to work it gave me coordinates that I was in Africa... Anyway, I think I am going to go back to 2003SE.
I'm having a different problem with iGuidance v2.1.3 on WM5. It installs and runs just fine. I use BT over COM6 and it seems fine. The problem I have is that the coordinates are off. The strange thing is that when I run GPSInfo (a separate app) it shows the correct coordinates - iGudiance thinks they are different and thinks I'm in a different location ( a few miles away).
I gave up on it and decided to go back to 2003SE (iGuidace v2.1 that worked perfectly fine on that configuration a long time ago). I followed teh steps to format/clean hive and did the down grade but am having a different problem. I've seen other people running into similar issues but I've not been able to get around it
"BTTrayCE - bluetooth can no longer be used because the license has expired" - I have tried a number of things using different BT stacks, 2003SE builds, reset (soft+hard) etc. Same problem!!! Argh - I'm stuck. I really miss my GPS!
Hi krille,
I also had similar problems with my SX66 and iGuidance and finally decided to go back to win 2003 because it worked fine with it. In WM5 my BT GPS receiver was never able to make a connection with iGuidance. But now I am having a different problem. I cannot downgrade even though I followed all the instructions correctly posted on the BA_Downgrade page. The upgrade program ( MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe ) does not seem to identify the rom versions and though it gives me a successfully upgraded message nothing had happened. I cannot downgrade now and stuck with WM5. Did any of you experience this when downgrading and can offer me any help.
DEK.
I've been upgrading/downgrading with differnt ROMs without any problems
Make sure to disable activesync on the pc and copy the nbf files as described in http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BA_Downgrade_WM5. Sometimes the verion info update to/from doesn't show between WM5/2003SE...
What happens when you click Update to continue?
BaUpgradeUt.exe worked
Thanks for your reply. I followed all the steps as described in the link you have sent but MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe did not upgrade (downgrade to 2003SE) though I got a message saying it did. Then I tried the file BaUpgradeUt.exe in PH20B folder and it did work. My device data file says my SX66 is in fact PH20B1 though. I do not know why MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe cannot update my ROM. Anyway I am happy now with my WM2003SE and iGuidance and BT all work faster with ROM update to 1.40. Now I am planing to customize my ExtROM to have all my personal settings and programs so that I want feel bad not having WM2005. Thanks for your willingness to help.

Not the same keyboard fix

I upgraded the rom on my cingular 8525 to the official wm6 rom from the HTC site. Now I have a keyboard problem. The keys do not transpose (as I have read in multiple other threads. Some of the keys simply do not function. I've tried quite a few cab files to change/fix the language on the keys but nothing has worked. I don't want to downgrade to wm5, but may have to. Any suggestions?
have you already checked the wiki with registry tweaks for the language settings?
try this:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_Registry
Yeah I checked the wiki and got total commander. Went to HKLM\Software\Oem\Qwerty and changed the value in 'Layout' to 20409, hexadecimal. Powered off/on. Still nothing. Please tell me I'm retarded and that I did this wrong. Keys that work: qwetu, asdgj, (CAPS) v n, Directional keys work, and the windows icon key is my spacebar. That's it. Luckily the on-screen keyboard is fine, so I may just find a cab that can maximize its size (short term), that is if I can't find a simple, quick fix. I did check though and every time I check the registry after I power off/on the value in 'Layout' shows as decimal not hex.
If a hard reset doesn't correct the problem.....
Re-Flash your 8525!!
With my 8525, I was having major problems with Internet access and playing video files. I had to re-flash it!! Things do happen during the flashing process, an occasional corruption can Happen!
Good Luck,
Stuart
I would but every time I attempt to sync, my computer loses it's wireless connection and then I have to do a system restore to get it to work again. The next time I flash my rom I'm going to do it on somebody elses computer. Clusterf&#k indeed. I may just hawk it on the bay and try to afford a tilt...
It may be easier to search for and install Schaps Advanced Configuration Tool v1.1... Then you can easily change the keyboard language to Cingular or English... Some people have had luck with using Chinese...
Good Luck.

help for dll

hallo friend, i ve a big problem on my p3300, i have downloaded program much important for my job as FIELD TEST, but on artemis does not works.
so i have read on web more more pages and i understand that the problem is a dll that in p3300 /windows there isnt: rilgsm.dll.
without this dll some port are closed on my htc i suppose com 9 and 6 (network ) so field test doesnt work propely!
can someone explane me how i can solve this problem or i can extract or add this dll.
i have actually italian wm6 official on my p3300 , but i can install also a unofficial rom with rilgsm.dll.
i wait for help as soon as possible
thanks
rilgsm.dll is in the Artemis Touch 4.01 WM6.1 WWE ROM - Lite without cube ROM as well as the other versions (full, vanilla, etc) I suppose.
But, I'm not sure that is the complete answer to your problem. I was trying to run a program which ran fine on my previous PPC using com6 but would not run on my Artemis using com4 (needed to run TomTom). Today, I found a solution here that works. It's called portsplitter. I installed it today and sucessfully used TomTom (requires com4) and the other program (requires com6) as well on the newly created com8! (see the link above to makes sense of that). Maybe what you need?
Here's another link in the Artemis forum discussing this issue.

i need only field test works , it is only excutable file, no need installation, there isnt configuration to do , is very simple, maybe i can send to ou the file to test.

pls help me
I don't know how to copy just the rilgsm.dll file you want. It's part of the rom and so access is denied on both the phone and via activesync.
Also, I don't know how to set ports. Did you try the portsplitter application I linked to above? I am using an application on my phone right now that uses port 6 thanks to the portsplitter application. Try it!
Upload your application here or post a link, and I'll see if I can give it a try.
i ve uploaded file here: http://www.megaupload.com/it/?d=ZL2OLMS0
please try it, anyway i dont know how to use port spkitter right mode, maybe i wrong to setup it
for it i need help
no one answeres.........
what's up with the (mad) face man? I have been trying to help you. I had a busy weekend and we are in totally different time zones - so relax.
Here, I will spell out very clearly how to use portsplitter...
Artemis settings:
start menu\settings\system tab\external GPS
programs tab...com8
hardware tab...com9/baud 4800
access tab...tick (select) manage GPS automatically
PortSplitter settings:
input: using your keyboard type COM8
baud: select 4800
output: select com6 and press 'add' then press 'start splitter'
the program will then be running in the background
Now go to your fieldtest app and set it to use com6 at 4800 baud. Or, if you know it uses com6 by default, just open it and see if it works.
If it works, you have two options. You can either start portsplitter each time you want to use it. Or, go back to the portsplitter app and tick 'autostart' so a link will be placed in the \windows\startup folder and you won't have to start it manually each time you reboot. It will always just run in the background. (edited to ad...) Actually, selecting 'autostart' only saves your settings so each time you open portsplitter it will run on com8 etc. You need to manually put a shortcut in the windows\startup folder for it to actually start up each time you turn your phone off and back on.
Now, if you use the portsplitter AND any other GPS programs (i.e. TomTom), you'll need to set that program (i.e. TomTom) to use com6.
In TomTom you do this by pressing the lower right hand corner of the screen where the clock and signal strength bars are. On the next screen press the right hand side of the screen where the battery status and signal strength bars are. Now press the lower left corner button called 'configure' and choose 'other NMEA GPS receiver' and press 'select'. Set the baud rate on the next screen for 4800 and press 'done'. Finally, press 'com:6 Port Splitter' and press done!
It works fantastic on my Artemis. I have another GPS program and I set up the GPS communications to use com6 at 4800 and it works like a charm as well. I've set PortSplitter to autostart after each boot, and I haven't given it a thought since. It just works.
I tried to download your app but there is a message that says "The file you are trying to access is temporarily unavailable."
I have fieldtest running on my Artemis right now. It looks like it auto sets itself to refresh every 3 seconds. The right hand side of the screen is called 'GSM' the left is called 'data'. Almost all data fields say N/A except for RSSI and Rx Quality. So, it looks like it runs, but does not work.
Probably due to this:
"fieldtest is not compatible with 9100/Prophet/Artemis. For those devices you need to use GSMTestMode.exe"
However, just in case you might still find this info useful...before trying fieldtest on my phone, I searched what it was about and found the info here. You may have already read it, but if not, there you go. BTW, (if you DID read it) you could have just directed me there to download the program rather than how you did it.
Lastly, I tried the registry edit:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> HTC -> EngineerMode -> BuildInEngineeringModeApp = 1
It changed nothing, the program is still mostly full of N/A responses. Also, ran the program from \windows and got the same responses as when I ran it from the memory card.
GSMTestMode.exe exists on my Artemis in the \windows folder.
To use it check this registry setting:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> HTC -> EngineerMode -> BuildInEngineeringModeApp = 1
Mine was 0 originally. I changed it to 1 and soft reset the phone. Then, opened the \windows folder and clicked on GSMTestMode.exe and all the info shows up instantly.
That was with portsplitter running in the background. So, I disabled portsplitter, soft reset and clicked on GSMTestMode.exe again - and it worked. Using/not using portsplitter made no difference. I did not check the values reported since I don't care enough. The rest is up to you.
thank you very much runningtiger, your info were very very precious for me, now works all fine.
only 1 problem: after i edit value from 0 to 1 in registry, gsm test mode works fine , but if i reboot artemis or shutdown and restart registry value back 0.
is there any way to solve?
bye and thanks again
This isn't an issue on my phone. I made the registry change using TotalCommander and used the exit command on the menu to close TotalCommander (rather than the X in the upper right hand corner). Then, I soft reset by pressing the reset button with the stylus. When my phone was ready to go again, I opened GSMTestMode.exe used it, closed it, then reset my phone again, used GSMTestMode.exe again and it worked again. So, the registry change sticks on my phone.
Usually the reason registry changes don't stick is not enough time passed before soft-resetting the device. Some registry changes are ready to use immediately, but others take a moment to actually write to the registry and if that process is interrupted then the change isn't actually made.
Three thoughts on your phone...
1) did you wait about a minute after making the registry change before soft-resetting your phone? This allows plenty of time for the change to be actually written to the registry.
2) wait a minute after doing the registry change, then try instead of soft-resetting doing a full power down by holding the power button until you are asked if you for sure want to turn off the phone and then let it sit a minute (off) before starting it up again?
3) can you try using TotalCommander to make the registry change like I described above?

1) did you wait about a minute after making the registry change before soft-resetting your phone? This allows plenty of time for the change to be actually written to the registry.
2) wait a minute after doing the registry change, then try instead of soft-resetting doing a full power down by holding the power button until you are asked if you for sure want to turn off the phone and then let it sit a minute (off) before starting it up again?
3) can you try using TotalCommander to make the registry change like I described above?
