Hi -
I purchased the 8GB MicroSDHC card from Verizon a week ago. It worked fine on my AT&T Tilt for a few days and than it lost all information! Fortunately, I was able to restore from backup, and it seems to be OK again. Here's the strange part: even though the original files and directories are gone, the card still counts them in used memory. I.e., the used memory is about 200 MB more than it should be, the amount of space I was using before the card crashed. This applies whether I check the memory on the device, connected by USB, or with the Card Adapter that came with the card.
Any ideas what might be causing this and how to recover the used memory short of reformatting the card?
Thanks!
If you could tell us what you did for it to crash it would help
You probably tried to partition it or something...?
Looks like you will have to format the whole card.
Maybe there is a simple way to do this but here is how i would do, if it helps :
- install WM5Storage on your PDA main memory
- start wm5storage with the option memory card and connect your PDA to your PC
Activsync then wont be sync'ing and your memory card will be seen from your PC as an USB-key. Open it on your PC and check to make sure it is your memory card that you see (and not your PDA main memory).
Then use whatever format tool to format your "USB key" with FAT like format, for example you can use HPtool (be carefull to format the key and not another drive !!!).
After this do not forget to turn off wm5storage, otherwise you will not be able to "see" the memory card on PDA side...
Hope it helps, let us know...
by the way maybe you could try this :
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
I've used it sometimes when i had started to format a hard drive instead of an usb key by mistake.
Windows was asking for formating everytime i wanted to open the hard drive folder. However, using this Testdisk tool, i was able to mount the hard drive and recover everything including my photos and music and stuff... Maybe you want to try this awesome tool, plus it is free and OpenSource.
Use wm5storage tool to use your PDA as an usb-key, then use Testdisk on this usb-drive, it might be able to see, list and recover all the "lost" files and heal the whole partition at same time.
Thanks for the suggestions - I'll post again when I have the chance to try them -
No luck
Had a similar problem with my Kaiser (HTC Rom). Yesterday I did something (don't know if it was memmaid - my guess, because otherwise I just installed some cabs I had previously installed in my Wizard with no problem) and my SanDisk 6 GB MicroSD was completely 'erased".
I just noticed after the Kaiser had created new folders over it (Application Data, Cookies, History and Temporary Intenet Folders). My assumption is that something destroyed my partition table (that's why I suspect memmaid, it may have cleaned something wrong) and now I have another partition over the old one.
I tried file recovery and found 1 GB good of files, but there were 5 Gigs on the card... I really wanted to find "program files" so I didn't have to re-install lots of stuff, but no luck.
Tried Testdisk as suggested above, but it never detects any partition, not even the current one. I guess I will have to reformat it and re-do all stuff.
Well, I may be saying lots of dumb stuff, but that's my guess.
Thanks if there is any possible help in this...
Ah, and when I insert the card via a card reader in my notebook and right click properties, it says 717MB free, which means my old files are there waiting for me (new folders have only 736KB of data)... What to do?
Guys need advise do you have to do any patch to be able to use 4-8GB mini SDHC card on your PDA?
I have a Asus P535. Have asked their support site and the reply I got is the max supported is only 4GB.
I believe I've read in more than one place that the Kaiser may support up to 32 Gig, which is the MicroSD maximum. But I may be wrong...
Fact is this has never happened with my Wizard and its 1 Gig MiniSD. Now I'm gonna increase backup and cloning so I don't have to reinstall everything...
But I'll check if there is a patch anyway. Thanks.
I am able to use Sandisk microSDHC 8GB can on Asus P535.
But need a micro adapter to miniSD

Click properties and then click theTools tab. Run Error-checking with both options checked. When you check your card, you will hopefully see a new directory with recovered files. You can then delete them and regain your disk space. This is what worked for me -
Thanks. I tried that at the time to no avail. I did have to reformat, and then reinstall everything... Now I'm using Sprite Backup, so everything including Storage Card is backed up in case this thing happens again.

It could be WINXP patch
I have the Sandisk 8G , it came with a small USB reader and all was working fine. However my ASUS W5 laptop also has a built-in SD slot so I installed a patch issued by Microsoft to make it HCSD compatible, and it read and write it OK but then I suddenly got the same problem that you've described here.
The disk goes blank but the files still occupy the space, even attempting to reformat the card in the built-in slot will ignore that space,i.e it shows only 5G card.
But reformatting using the small USB card reader was fine and from now on I only use the cardreader to read and write and everything is OK. In my view the XP patch was causing that problem

I decided to replace the 512 MB card in my Cingular 8525 with a 2 GB card. When I put the 512 card in its adaptor, the PC read the directory, showed a FAT format, but would not copy/read/or otherwise manipulate any of the files. I plugged the card back into the 8525 and found that it couldn't even see it. Giving up on any kind of file recovery, I tried to reformat it in the PC, but then IT couldn't detect the card! After I played with it awhile, I finally got it to start the format process, but it always failed just before the "green line got to the end" and, after several attempts, it reported "disk cannot be formatted."
Is there any way I can save this card, or is it a (VERY small) boat anchor?
I've seen yesterday in the Sandisk site and somebody told me that they have some kind of software tool (file recover, unformat, etc.), that's very capable, unfortunately it is not free, there's a trial version (does not allow to save any files). Sofware's name is "Rescue Pro", if you can get yourself a copy you might give it a try.
Another thing about an SD (in my experience), I'm talking about a Verbatim 512MB SD, i borrow it to a friend, when he was giving it back, just cancelled all his things up, stopped the card reader (from XP), extracted the SD and it was dead, fortunately I had kept my proof of purchase and they (Verbatim) exchanged it with a new one (in europe the warranty is at least 2 year long), they asked me to send it to Ireland to check if it could be recovered and within three weeks (just because there was christmas in the middle) I got a new one back.
hope this helps
Try putting it in a Digital Camera with SD Slot (put in SD Adapter first;-))
Then format it via your Digital Camera
Or
Download VaioSoft Recovery Manager and try to format with that one

What PQI support suggests
I´ve had trouble with PQI miniSD cards, so I asked support from PQI on corrupted files, this is their answer in order to check if the card is damaged or not and includes several tips on using memory cards, it´s alittle bit long to read, but maybe it worths, so here it goes:
Some hints of using flash memory cards
1. Do NOT remove the memory card while it is operating, otherwise it may be
damaged.
2. Do NOT turn off the device, while the operation of writing /reading is
not completed.
3. When the battery power of system is low, do not write to the memory card to prevent loss of data.
4. Make sure the device (card reader/phone/camera/pda/camcorder) has finished reading/writing to the card before you take another shot/turn it off or the data will be corrupt/lost and the card will be damaged. You can tell by the device indicator light where it flashes when it is reading and writing to the card. Wait until the indicator light is off and stops flashing before you take another shot/turn the device off or remove the card/drive.
Before you continue, please make sure you have a reader that can read and write to 2GB card properly. DO NOT use in built-in reader on laptop and desktop, or old readers made 2 years or longer ago, because these readers can only use up to 1GB card. I recommend using it in external USB 2.0 reader that is made within 1 year ago.
If you do not have such reader, then connect the device (gps/camera/pda/camcorder) to the computer with USB cable and the card inserted and if works you should see new drive letters show up under My Computer.
Otherwise, if used in devices that do not support the 2GB card, the card will be damaged.
Please try the following troubleshooting guide first and see if it can solve the problem. Try one step at a time. If one works, then you can stop trying. You don't need to try all of them.
The following guide will erase all the data on the drive/card. So make sure you backup your data first before you try the steps below:
1. First, remove the card/drive from your computer.
Download the low level format tool below to your computer.
http://hddguru.com/download/software/HDDGURU-Low-Level-Format-Tool/LLFsetup.2.36.1181.exe
Install the program into your computer.
You should see a new icon called "Hard Disk Low Level Format Tool".
a. Insert the card/drive and run the program.
IMPORTANT!!! MAKE SURE YOU SELECT THE CORRECT DISK OR YOUR COMPUTER MAY NOT START LATER!!!
It should shows as BUS: USB. Select the BUS: USB. Also check the size and make sure.
If you don't see BUS: USB, that means the card is unreadable and need to be replaced. In this case, please STOP here and close the program and DO NOT continue below.
b. Then click Continue->Low Level Format->Format this Device.
c. Wait for a few minutes until it finish successfully with a message of asking you to partition and format it. (if you see formatting error, you can stop the formatting and the card needs to be replaced.)
d. Flash Card:
Put the card back to your device (camera/phone/pda/camcorder) and then use the format utility in the device to format the card.
Please let me know your test results. Thanks.
Reference: Program homepage
http://hddguru.com/content/en/software/2006.04.12-HDD-Low-Level-Format-Tool/
2. Please go to the site below:
http://www.sdcard.org/Downloads.aspx
Please try to download the software sdfv2000.exe (for windows only) and the manual for your reference.
Install the sdfv2000.exe in your computer, then insert the card into the card reader (if you do not have reader, you can try to connect your device to the computer with USB cable) and then run it:
a. Check the drive letter and also the size and make sure it is the correct card.
b. Click Option:
Format Type: Full Erase ON
Format Size Adjustment: ON
c. Click OK, then click Format. Wait until it finish.
d. You will be prompted to remove the card after it finish. Then go ahead and insert it in your (camera/pda/camcorder etc) and see.
16. T-mobile MDA (cannot format 2GB mini SD card)
Please install the software below to your phone (you can download the free trial):

Then use the Storage Tools software above to format the card and see.

SD cards where made to improve the lack of speed of MMC cards, also they include the writing protection/lock, it is the small switch you see in one side of the SD.
Also, SD cards are slightly different from MMCs phisically, SDs are thicker than MMCs (that's why you cannot put them in a Nokia phone), the electrical specs should by backwards compatible (aside from phisycal differences).
Recently some updatings/improvements have been done to MMC specs, they claim to be the fastest memory card technology available, there are MMC plus, etc.
I know all these things that I read recently (I just can't remember where).
hope this info can be used, and one last thing is that information on this subject can be found easily on the net, it's juest a matter of look for it, personally I like a lot an electronics web site: www.epanorama.net

Memory card fixes
Guys
We've seen this issue quite a bit lately.. Memory card simply locks up Windows when inserted.. It seems to be related to a flakey FAT table on the card. Formatting does nothing... Disk manager can't deal with it either..
The solution we found that worked was to use Paragon Partition Tools to remove the partition table on the card.. Recreate it.. then reformat..
Unless the card is physically cactus, it works every time..
Good luck!

Good for you. But I'm still getting headache as I can't contact the manufacturer.
I had formatted the micro SD card in ext4 format for using with app2SD. I had it in 2 partitions.
And then after a while, the card stopped functioning (with so little and useless 30MB storage).
I had tried things like recovery, formatting, partition recovery.
Nothing can return it to original state. I just want it to be blank. It's ok I lost all the data.
I was using it pretty good and suddenly my memory card appear and disappear when ever i reset my ppc. Now, i cant detect it anymore on my dopod 838 pro. Any idea or comments i can do to verify that the memory card is the problem (if it is still alive?) really need some advise and thanks in advance!

Pull the card out and pop it in a Normal PC Card reader and see if you can see the contents. For some reason PPC's will occasionally corrupt the formatting of the card to majke it unreadable to it but PC's sometimes can. If you can read it with a PC, then copy the contents off, reformat usign the PC and copy the contents back and try it in the PPC again.
ok will do that. but isnt that dangerous to lose data tat way? also, when i could read the memory card, the folders r there but the files r gone. possible virus?
i can find my memory card on the card reader. i tried formatting it but it gave me an error "Window is unable to complete the format". What is wrong?
Were you able to copy your info off of the card? How were you trying to format it?
Make sure that you DON'T have a window to the card open when trying to format.
HELP ME WITH ADVISE!
My problem is back again. My data at certain folder in the memory card is disappeared but still able to browse the memory card. Then i soft-reset a couple of times and the data comes back. It took the dopod 838 pro to read the memory card very long time b4 able to show the data on the card.
What should i do?
Check the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager. There are two DWORD values - PNPUnloadDelay and PNPWaitIODelay. If they are not set to 8196 - do that.
its 8196 as posted...
Looks to me like 2 possibilities:
Your SD Card is shot; or
Your phone has lost the plot.
If it reads OK on the PC card reader, the card is probably OK.
I'd try a hard reset of the phone first. (Make sure you have backed up everything first.)
Also, clean the SD slot as best you can to make sure there are no biscuit crumbs or old socks fallen into the hole.

Seems like some problems with this card. You didn't try another one?
I have been using Touch 4.02 with an 8gb card for ages now with no troubles then yesterday the storage card is no longer recognised by the phone? I tried the usual soft reset, taking the card out wiping it put it back in still no joy.
Reinstalled the sdhc cab file didnt work, Have just re-flashed with the new diamond look a like rom and still it aint recognising the card.
Has anyone got any ideas??

Probably your card is broken....
Try to insert it in a card reader and see if it recognizes the card....
Yeh will have to wait till I get home not sure my memory card supports SDHC though?
I have a similar problem, and like you I've been happily using an 8gb card for a while, but in the last week it has stopped working correctly.
Occasionally it is fine, but most of the time access to the card is either very slow or it doesn't appear at all.
I've tried the following but with no success:
- Using another MicroSD card (2gb)
- Reading the cards in a card reader and they are fine
- Reinstalling Artemis Touch 4.02 WM6.1
- Formatting the card (FAT32)
- Shimming the MicroSD card with bits of cardboard as I've read there can be a loose fit
- Cleaning the contacts on the card reader
- Pulling the contact pins out a bit to get a better fit
Does anyone have any ideas of anything else to try?
Does WM5torage work?
I did the followings to make my 4GB Micro SD usable by my Artemis:
1-flashed it to FAT32 in my laptop (I Had to format my laptop partition D of my HDD to FAT32 to make the microSD recognizable by my NTFS system).
2-copied the "system folder" from my older 512 MGB card as it is (hidden) to the root of my 4GB
3-The 4GB is readable by my artemis by now.
4-To make sure the crad will be working good in the future, I installed the "Flashcard" Cab in my Artemis and reflashed the card to FAT32, 512 Bytes 4KB clusters.
The card is just fine under Artemis windows, but I gatta take it out when flashing any new ROMs or Radio.
Hope that'd help you.

No - WM5torage behaves the same ... i.e. occasionally works (if the phone can see the card), but most of the time it just reports an error
It is deffothe memory card just put my old 2gb back in the phone and it worked, I have tried the 8gb in my PC card reader and in y camcorder that takes sdhc and neither recognised it.
This explains why my phone started goin so slow it would take ages to do anything then the memory card was unrecognised a few days later.
Im guessing there is no way to repair these?
If you can't read it, you can't do anything...
R.I.P.... :|

Gutted oh well
not as gutted as i am ... looks like i'll have to buy a new phone!
Just try to format it by these criteria
FAT32, 512 Bytes 4KB clusters
then let us know.
dude dont panic try to recover the card first before you format it. i am sure there are some imp data there eh?

my best choice is Recover My Files http://www.recovermyfiles.com/

Same issue, I am changing from 8GB Micro SD to a 16GB micro SD, the catch: I am using A2SD+ and my previous 8GB has ext3 partition, so do I simply backup, change card and copy back the files or do I need to partition the new 16GB card like I did the old one, and then copy my backup?
if you want to save your ext as well, then this is best done via amon-ra recovery.
do a nandroid + ext backup of your rom with your old sd card.
put in a new sd card, formatted with ext, restore nandroid + ext then your rom and ext will be fine.
As for the fat you will have to copy as outlined above (via a pc).

This is what I did them I got a new card, I had this in another post so just cut and pasted, my solution to moving to a new card. Bering a new member I can't post the link in here, but here is the copy of it here.
My setup, 2GB no class listed MicroSD, HTC Desire, Rooted with MoDaCo r9, with A2SD. All of my apps are on the MicroSD pretty much.
Well the MicroSD came in and I did what I know how to do, I used a cloning program that I use all the time for PCs, figured what the hell it should work.
- I plugged both of the MicoSDs using the SD adapter, then plugged the SD adapter into an SD to USB adapter and plugged them into the PC.
- I used Acronis True Image 2010 Acronis True Image , did an exact clone (called "Disk Clone" in the Acronis software), from my 2GB MicroSD to the 16GB MicroSD. Did NOT adjust any partitions or anything, had 14GB of free unused, unpartitioned space on the new card.
- Then I took the new 16GB MicroSD and plugged it back into my phone, booted, and it worked great, the phone can't even tell that it's a new MicroSD, shows same sizes and everything, as I didn't adjust any partition sizes yet.
- Then I took the MicroSD back out, plugged it back into the PC, then used another product of Acronis, called Disk Director Disk Director and then went in and expanded/resized the FAT partition to the full size, it used the free unused space to do that, and moved the partitions down the line and expands the FAT one in place.
- Plugged the card back into my phone, booted, worked great, got 15 GB plus of space now on the FAT partition. All the apps works, everything works great. It seems a little snappier and faster when loading apps now.
Side notes:
I just happened to have both of these products installed on my PC and use them all the time so that's what I used, but any Disk Cloning program that supports USB will work.
There is plenty of other "cloning" programs out there, like Norton Ghost - not free, some other pais ones. But also bunch free ones as well a list of them here , wiki list of them as well. Some of these programs are LiveCDs, which means you boot your PC of a CD and then you can edit HDs, also the USB Drives, other like Acronis will have a PC program as well a boot disk. With acorns I was able to use it just as a program no booting of a CD.
I personally have used this program called "hdclone" which is free, it has one limitations but it really is not a big deal in this case, it limits the copying to 1 GB per minute, hell for 16GB card thats 16 minutes !!! so not a limitation really. So do a exact clone using HDclone, don't resize the new SD just leave it as is, this worked for me, I think leaves everything exact as possible. Another free cloning program I have used in the past is DriveImage XML , so either of these will work to clone one SD to another. Now to resize, the product I use ALL the time to resize drives is "gparted", this one is a boot CD, so all you gotta do, plug in your SD card using the USB, boot of this small GParted CD, select your drive and then expand the FAT partition. Few extra steps with some free products but it works if you're not able to acquire Acronis.
Hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions or problems. Sorry for the long write up but haven't seen anybody describe doing this plus some people aren't as familiar with cloning HDs as others.

Sorry for the long write up but haven't seen anybody describe doing this plus some people aren't as familiar with cloning HDs as others.

what can i say? very detailed!
the only problem is that, I had to download Acronis product demos before I can do all these. I do imaging before but I dont resize EXT partitions...
ANyway Im still downloading..
Although I think it would help if anybody can post free and lighter (below 50MB, I guess) of softwares that can do USB cloning (disk cloning in general),..
I will post here my results..
HDclone is pretty small program and it should do the job.

if you want to save your ext as well, then this is best done via amon-ra recovery.
do a nandroid + ext backup of your rom with your old sd card.
put in a new sd card, formatted with ext, restore nandroid + ext then your rom and ext will be fine.
As for the fat you will have to copy as outlined above (via a pc).

So far, this worked for me.
1. Backed-up my old 8GB card on my PC (the FAT partition).
2. Did Nandroid + Titanium Back up. (The Nandroid will backup the EXT partition)
3. Formatted the new 16GB with FAT32 on my PC
4. Resized the 15.++ GB of FAT32 to 14.XX GB so that the 1GB goes to the EXT3- I did this via a bootable GPARTED CD I got here: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/download.php
5. Copied the Clockwork MOD folder from my PC backup (see step 1) to my new 16GB card.
6. Inserted the new 16GB to my phone and booted into ClockworkMOD recovery
7. Did a NANDROID Restore.
8. After restore, I had to shut off my mobile and I removed the card coz I needed to copy back the whole FAT partition backup from step 1 to the new card.
9. Placed the new 16GB back and voila!
(NOTE: steps can be interchanged, for example, I think the copying of the FAT partition done in step 8 can be done after step 3 above.
Anyways, hope it helped.

connect the phone in "Disc Mode" copy all your data onto your computer, disconnect, change memory card to the new one, and copy and paste to the 16 gig.
Sorry I don't know any way of moving you games or apps when changing an SD card
hope this helps! good luck!

please bear with me, i am a newbie, have this unrooted desire froyo. i still have no plans of rooting it.
i also wanted to change the 2gig memory card to an 8 gig mem card. can i just follow the instructions above? is rooting really required for this?
thank you in advance for any help or step by step procedure.
Don't worry, you don't need root and it's really simple as copy and paste.
@3722 Huh?.. how can he carry out the above procedure without being rooted?
Sent from my HTC Desire using eMIUI
My reply is to the comment above my post (by nytevs), and he is using a standard froyo A2SD, no root, no ext partitions so it's just simple as copy/paste, just like it says on the quote that he is reffering to in his post (the quote from !PANDA).

Hi,
I'm posting this issue second time. I have a class 2 SD card with almost 1700mb of ext3 partition. the problem is that my SD turns to read only when accessing some files from my sd card. it says in the notification SD card mounted as a read only and then say "tap" to resolve the card responded unexpectedly.
tapping on it sometimes help if i remove the files that I was trying to access that created the problem. otherwise it mounts it as read only.
Hi, you sure your card is a genuine one? The problems you are having are identical to what I had. Turns out my 32gb card was in fact an 8gb card, and the problem was when capacity was reached it would go to read only. The only way to rectify this was to take the card out, place it in my PC card reader right click on properties of the drive and run the error checking tool. Hope this helps. Got my money back anyway thought £36 was a bit cheap lol! Try writing a large file to the card using your Computer, this should give you an indication if the card is genuine or not.

Card is genuine. I have placed my card several times in my brothers htc hd and formatted it through windows. its almost 8 gb i checked it on windows. last time I deleted a folder which has wiered name as if the folder was corrupted. I deleted that folder n it was running fine again. but its back again.
mine came with telus, so it should be genuine. what does class signify? like i have class 2, what does it mean?
CLass is the speed of read and writes.
I recently had a problen like this it turned out to be a corrupt file in the .secure folder used for apps to sd.

then I guess its because of corrupt files but why is it so often specially when I copy something from windows.
I had this problem once after disconnecting from a Windows PC, simply connect the sd car directly to a computer and run the windows verification tool, it finds the corrupt file and your sd card starts working again
hey i recently had the same problem ,, but i figured it out and this method should work fine...!!
>First of all you should know how this problem has occurred..??,
well the reason is, we all connect the phone to system in usb mass storage mode ,,but while removing we'll only give safely remove in the system and forget to do the same in the phone ,,,trust me this the core for this problem....sd-card cannot be fully unmounted by system ,,, so you have to manually do this by your phone
so if you are using the sense rom ,,after ejecting the disk in the system ,,,in your your phone's notification area
in ''connect to pc'' menu select charging only .....this will completely unmount your memory card .
>if you are using non sense rom ,,"turn off the usb" mass storage
do this every time you connect your phone to the system ..!!!
ok now solution for your problem..
>reboot your phone to recovery mode using rom manager...
>select partition menu
>now select mount usb storage ,,,
>now you have tow options
1. either you backup every thing and format your sd-card (recommended)
or
2.mount your sd-card and check for errors in windows,,,
this should fix your problem ..
remember ,,next time when you are connecting your phone don't direly unplug the the cable..!!

The Class number represents a multiple of 1 MB/s
So if 2 is written on ur SD card then it means that its capable of a read speed of 3MB/s

- Not always true, its happened to me on several occassions when not connected to PC etc... Flickie HD caused mine
If you have a mac the fix is - disk utilities - repair card
Full format I found to be better though
