EDIT: bla bla bla, #xda-devs on freenode!
we have a channel
#xda-devs on freenode
cya there!
Does this still work?
All your posts got deleted for being off-topic. SOPA!
Well I expect more activity in the channel than just idling there :\
So there are no hot babes in the channel? Bummer...
Yeah, it's a zombie channel.
Have people moved onto a different channel? I've been here now for the past month idling, and looking at it once in a while, it's unmoderated, and it's mostly used by two users named cerjam and taylee being immature and generally talk about sex-related random ...things. But it sure is populated by idlers.

It's not an official channel and is nothing to do with XDA. Unfortunately there are a lot of immature idiots on the internet these days though.

Ye, but an unmoderated channel doesn't help either as it seems. I don't really care for what protocol people use, but a live chatbox to talk about stuff seems helpful though. But indeed, channels die very quickly. Only channel alive I'm subscribed to is <...>
it's moderated just fine. I've been there for four years. You've been there... ... a month? can't say i've seen you.
So now that XDA has officially taken over XDA-Devs of freenode. When are we getting a webbased chat/link?

If xda-devs account on irc.freenode.net is official then someone should ensure the account is not used to add previously unregistered nicknames to that account for the sole purpose of trolling people on that IRC channel.
It would reflect negatively on the xda-devs if this was the norm and not the exception.
don't come into our channel and tell us what to do. all ive got to say.
Someone has banned *!*@* (non-IRC people, that string means "Ban everyone") and essentially taken over the channel.
What the hell just happened?
for those unfamiliar with the situation:
#xda-devs has been an established freenode channel since 2007, owned and operated by Olipro a well known and one of the most respected windows mobile developers.
I've been a user in the channel for over 3 years now, recently the staff of xda-developers convinced freenode that they are the rightful owners of the channel, who then removed olipro, and was appointed the channel.
We were informed that it was now an official channel, and they were going to run it as how they see fit.
Within the first 24 hours, one regular of 3+ years was banned.
Within the first 7 days, a global ban on the optonline network was established, along with a major japanese network, banning every user on those significant networks from the channel. I know of three people this affected personally, let alone all the users who were unable to join to complain.
Tonight, it appears someone using the alias Flar, which has been an operator in that channel since earlier this week, took control and banned every user.
Now, as many people who have visted the IRC over the years knows, i can be very mouthy and pretty much useless. However, I have been in that channel for 3+ years on a daily basis, and am good friends with more than a few users, I have to say the way this all went down is a complete wreck. Sure, I understand xda staffs arguement. They're entitled to a channel, and as freenode policy states, that is what # is for. However, HOWEVER. There is a very big userbase of this channel, spanning back years. To hijack it with absolutely no regard of the existing people, with people who've never even been in the channel and as what happened tonight shows, inexperienced IRCers, is very out of pocket.
We've created ##xda-devs for stability, and off topic discussion. I'd like to see an end to this drama and e-peen contest as much as the next person, I urge the XDA staff to join us and come to terms.
A word from the staff would be helpful about now.
Well, at least you get points for misrepresenting what happened and being part of the drama you claim to not wanting to be a part of. Not as a moderator, but one person to another, and one I had previously thought to be on friendly terms with, ... what the ****, cerjam.

This is in reference to the NilsP/Joelz petition threads that were closed by willverduzco, and the resulting lashing that he posted here. While there were a VERY small minority of posts that might have crossed a line of respect, an overwhelming number of the posts in there were simply people showing support for the developers that deserve that recognition.
I find it disturbing that the moderation team can't seem to take some criticism here. This is a community, and if the mod/admin team can't at least listen to the members of that community without mocking them or belittling them as was done in this thread, then this place is truly lost. Which is sad because it was (and in a lot of regards still is) a great place for android users/devs to get together.
I'm sure this thread will too be locked, and I'll take my whipping of the cat-o-nine-tails for daring to challenge the overlords, but this is really a sad state of affairs.

i understand you are upset that nilsp did not get his badge for "reconized developer" and im not trying to say he does not deserve it (because is one of the great devs still on here).
but the way you decided to handle it was not good. posting it in the development thread to get it seen more is not the way to go. if you feel like he deserves the badge, then voice your opinion by pming Developer Committee please dont try to start a war on here. it will only end badly. we are already have enough wrong posting going on by people mistaking this as an INC 2 thread. please dont add to it.
if you dont like the rules then go to a different site. there are some of us on here that still want to keep order and help others and not make this a flame site.
*i am ready to be flamed now*
Dudes he gave us a proper way to appeal, which I personally didn't know about. Its not as epic as "challenging overlords", they just want us to follow the rules.
This "iron fist" thing has been talked about for weeks. There was a huge article on it in the portal about the sense of entitlement, people thinking for some reason that donations = labor contracts, the devs being frustrated by users *****ing, among other things. The easiest way for them to circumvent it is to have a zero tolerance policy, so they're not exactly gonna be nice about a whole lot right now. My advice to yall is to just let it go and be cool.
They run this place, we don't, period. Lets just enjoy what it does for our gadgets guys... They obviously are going through a rough time, the least we can do is make it easy on them.
Everyone needs to remember this is only a website... mods I respect you but seriously IT'S A WEBSITE... I'm 20 and have more sense than most people on here this is all childlike and uncalled for... this is a community not a hierarchy...

I wasn't all bent until I read their responses. That is where I had a problem. The way that they dealt with this was disconcerting. All we wanted to do was to show some support for a couple of peeps, and if we did it wrong then educate us without being jerks about it.

Ok, so that makes sense for the one that was in the development forum, but what about the petition thread? I don't see anywhere in those rules that say that we aren't allowed to show support for another member/dev or question the decisions of the mods.
Sure there was probably a couple of members that might have pushed it a little far, but I don't think any of it was really over the line (but admittedly I didn't read every single post and I'm not going to) - just voicing displeasure about it, and showing support.

im all for keeping the devs here, but posting a flame thread is not the way. (im also not stopping you from voicing you opinion if you do it the correct way.) it just adds fuel to the fire. that's something we don't need.
"If they disagree with a moderator's actions, users CAN complain (not in the forums, only via Private Message). We are putting systems in place to ensure that mods ask for advice from the team in complex situations. Senior mods and administrators will do everything we can to ensure that moderators wield their power for good, not evil. Fair but firm. Firm but fair. It's a balance we strive for daily, and this is a responsibility we all take seriously."
if you feel that he was wronged the do the right thing by pming the mods or the committee. then threatening the mods after you thread was closed is still not the way to get your voice out.
(thank you by the way for serving our country.)

As a moderator of another forum. I have some experience with this stuff. It doesn't have nearly 4,000,000 members, but it has almost 30,000, it's a big chunk. About 6 moderators to handle it, and really only 2 keep up with it (me being one of them), the others log on about once a month. First of all, I don't like closing threads, it's just ruining freedom of speech, which is kind of the whole point of a forum, if I have to I'll edit every single post, but I like to let people speak their mind. I also never mention anything somebody did, even if a name isn't mentioned, anything someone in particular did. In the mods post he said about the member who is threatening to leave, well, I'll admit it, that was me, and anyone could have found that out. BTW, I'm not the first one to do that. I would never do that to one of my members. I hope this doesn't get edited or removed. I'm not whining, I'm just saying my opinion. Nothing wrong, nothing bad. Just saying it. Also, I never come back at my members in a mean or insulting way unless they come at me on a personal level. Not a moderating job level, but an actual personal level. I think it's wrong to go to your members and tell them they are just whiny little crybabies who need to grow up.

I can see both sides of the argument. Nils is a great dev and should be recognized as a dev. The mods have a site to run andm unfortunatly, there are quite a few immature people that visit these forums and flame away, are disrespectful, and flat out rude. I would like to think that the mods realize that not giving him his dev title after all he has done for the community, was a mistake. I dont know if the will acknowledge that, but it is a mistake. On the other hand, and I have even been guilty at times, there is way too much flaming, rudeness, people demanding of devs, and moronic behavior all over this site, it has become really pathetic. If the mods actual felt that they needed to bring down the hammer, they should have started a long time ago and not let it get as bad as it is. I appreciate this site, but I am also thankful that there are other places I can get quality roms for my phone. Xda just isnt what it used to be when I joined several years ago.

Yeah, and for a mod to put this text when moving a thread is not going to help:
"Moved: I'm incapable of posting or filing an appeal properly, so my thread was moved."
Members are going to cross the line, and honestly act childish at times - sure. But the moderation team shouldn't address that with even more childish behavior.

First off as a fellow veteran I thank you for your service. However from what I've read about this site it was started in Europe so our American sense of 2nd amendment rites is kind of a mute point. This was and is a site created by devs for devs, us users are just here for the ride without much say in the matter as it isn't a democracy.
This fued some have going with Hacre I think is pointeless. To tell you the truth I think he is some type of enforcer on here. From what I can tell from googling him he's been asked before by mods to respond to posts in the exact same manner he is now. Hasn't anyone noticed not one mod in that main section is from America nor has said anything about Hacre's posts?
I think all the drama here is getting out of hand and its teime to just let it go. Yes I think they should have left the petition threads alone, but the op of the Nils thread asked for it to be locked. Yours I think was a mistake but you pissed someone off by reopening it on your own, maybe should have asked first? In my opinion this has done more harm than good to both Joel and Nils but I guess it wouldn't be xda if it didn't get all blown out of portion in a hurry and quickly go to ****.

Same goes for both your posts.
(Why use #gn = because most ppl there will have the Galaxy Nexus and are reading in it's forums.)
My first post is a legitimate question as to why use this specific channel (with the likely small amount of people to respond) while there is global #xda-devs channel (where a fair share of the people actually do have the Galaxy Nexus).
Furthermore, if you think answering a question with "guess" has any place here on XDA-Developers, you might want to reconsider being here.

Why would #GN be better than xda-devs?.. Let me illustrate.
topic for xda-devs: Note: This is #xda-devs, the operative word being DEV. not "I'm a spastic who can't even flash a ROM"
..
where as GN is for anything and everything... so if I am a user looking for help, the folks in xda-dev's are not helpful.. If i'm looking for specifically help on a g.n., once again, xda-devs, on the off chance I find someone who is a helpful person, the chances are they will not be helpful with a gn as the phone itself isnt their target audience.
And yes, I realize that this topic is old, but it still deserves love.
I saw the posting on the portal about switching off of GoDaddy, and first of all I want to say THANK YOU!
From all of us who don't have a website they can switch off of GoDaddy, we thank you. Putting your money in the pockets of companies you approve of is GREAT. I only wish I could do more to help.
The article did leave me wondering if you had your domain registered with them, or also used them as the host for all the content. After I pondered that, I wondered if there would be any outages due to the swap. I would certainly not complain if there were, I am just curious if there might be.
Again, thank you for doing this, I hope that large communities continue to pull their money from companies their members do not approve of.
I would have seen it on my RSS reader at some point, but thanks boardsportsrule for posting this and bringing it to my attention. I've only got 1 domain registered with them, but I've just cancelled the auto-renew.
More people need to be made aware of the small things they can do that can make a large difference, together.

It is merely for domain registration. The site is not hosted on godaddy, and the actual dns resolving is done by xda servers.

Here is the statement from XDA, i hope many others will follow suit...
Website Update: We’re moving from GoDaddy

Website Update: We’re moving from GoDaddy
As many of you may be aware, we here at XDA-Developers occasionally stand in support of our members. All of you feel that you can submit things on the forums, knowing that the information is appreciated, used, and shared. We have members all over the world, and we know that the rules aren’t always the same when it comes to what you are “legally” allowed to do. I think I can speak for a great many by saying that while our unified voices are strong, there is nothing stronger than action. In keeping with that, we have decided to move XDA-Developers away from GoDaddy entirely.
This won’t surprise many. GoDaddy’s original support of the Stop Online Piracy Act, followed by their frankly cowardly flip-flop when that stance showed unpopular was enough for the decision to be clear. If SOPA clears, The very existence of a site like XDA would be at risk. For the record, SOPA would allow:
The US Government to selectively censor the web based on requests made by organizations who disapproved of content
Deny the owners of a site due process of law by blacklisting a DNS based on just a claim of copyright infringement
Force sites like XDA to aggressively monitor and filter all content
Hold site owners accountable for everything users post, with consequences like jail time and heavy fines
If SOPA passes, XDA would be forced to switch to a review system, where the forum moderators would have to inspect and approve every post on every subforum. The result would seriously decrease activity on XDA, and it wouldn’t be very long after that we’d likely be forced to close our doors. Obviously this is a “worst case” scenario, but it doesn’t change the fact that this could be a reality if SOPA passes.
Over the next few days, we will be moving all XDA assets away from GoDaddy. In the mean time, we encourage you to head over to the EFF, where they have created a page for how you can do your part to oppose this legislation that would allow the US to firewall content from their own citizens.

Hello, SONY.
We are Anonymous.
It has come to the attention of the Anonymous activist community that you have chosen to stand by the Stop Online Piracy Act
http://www.cinemablend.com/games/Nintendo-Sony-Stop-Supporting-SOPA-Anonymous-Threats-38195.html
I decided not to move my domains from godaddy. Reason being is that im letting those domains expire on them, so they take the cost of maintaining them. They aren't getting any more money from me.
It's not /just/ the elephant for me, it's their SOPA support, too. Thank you, xda.
An IRC Channel for the archos gen9 as user help and dev communication
The IRC channel is named #archosg9-xda and is registered on freenode
you can access it over the freenode webchat HERE
or by typing /join #archosg9-xda in your irc client
Feel free to join anytime you want, speak english, behave well and if you have questions first search at xda before asking in the irc channel
Why an IRC Channel ?
i already had the idea 3 weeks ago but i was on holidays
now i'm back and i want to give the xda gen9 forum an own irc chat
most time questions are posted in a thread, and then the answers, which result sometimes in off-topic posts
through an irc channel the user can help each other like in an instant messanger, so you dont have to refresh the site to see if someone answered
AND this is also a great possibility for developers to share ideas or solutions to various problems
i personally chat with people from the xperia x8 forums, most time with my team, and since i started on irc channels i learned a lot of things
#archos and #openpma on Freenode have existed for years. An Archos employee hangs out in both of them (even when he is on vacation - props), and the other people there know a great deal about omap-based Archos devices, and in general, the Archos way of doing things. They are knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly.
But if we must have a channel just for the g9, #archosg9 has existed since June 22 2012, and I vote for that one, as there's no need to restrict the scope of the channel to xda.
But no matter which channel people want to use, I wish more people interested in g9 development would hop on IRC once in a while.
EDIT: Whoops, I meant #openpma.

Hi people,
I'll get right to it. If you're here, I am assuming you're into flashing ROMs and customising your device to get that peak performance, If I am right then this post is for you. If you're fine with the stock experience then you can skip this post, go buy that phone, it's worth every cent.
I loved the phone from day one and still do, the issue lies not with the phone but with the community.
The prime means of communication for this group is Telegram. There is an "official" Vince group where users and devs discuss issues share files etc. At least that's what I'd hoped when I joined the group. Never have I ever been so wrong.
It's anything but a group in harmony, there are about 4-6 admins, and only do 2 of them behave responsibly, The rest are just drunk on the power of being an admin of a telegram group (It'd be funny if it weren't so sad.).
Admins use ban kick and mute freehandedly and unreasonably, Anyone with a different opinion to the admins no matter how respectfully put forward will surely grant you a warning (/warn).
To be honest, I wouldn't care so much, all my previous devices I never had to join a telegram group because I didn't need to. The devs were open and communicated via XDA itself, problems were resolved at a reasonable speed (not that they were obliged to) and honestly, if a ROM works there's really no need to contact the admin, you wouldn't find this case with Vince, there'll be bugs and when you report them, hold your breath for the warn.
I still strode forward, overlooking these shortcomings of the community (mainly admins but users are at fault too), Here's your average day on the group.
Until one day, the admins had a bright idea to set an automated response to whenever anyone wrote "best"
They used the meme from Black Panther (The relation is still unknown) with the photoshopped head of the Prime Minister of India.
day
It didn't follow the outrage I expected thankfully but rather 2-3 people politely asked the admins to remove it. On refusing the argument heated a bit
At this time I'd had enough. I was getting tired of these obnoxious people trolling the entire community day in day out. The sad thing was the trolls were the admins...
And of course he couldn't take his own advice, not surprising tbh
Further admins promote snake oil techniques which have 0 benefit, which includes
1) Disconnecting and reconnecting battery to fix idle drain ... (what even?)
2) This is a real gem, I'll just post a screen of it
Also realise how admin's don't follow the rules themselves, but failure to follow the rules on your end is an insta-ban.
This is the state of the community of Vince, the development is even more lagging, All Oreo roms are basically cosmetic changes on but the same rom, they'll have the same issues bugs drain. There's one developer working on pie who comes on telegram and cusses the entire community for not trying his ROM, I get it, they are not obligated to work for the device and I appreciate it, but I as a user am not obligated to test a buggy ROM on my daily driver, I am sorry.
Only the community can fix this, bring the change they want to see, stop treating admins like they are God's so they can walk all over you, or let them and let the situation stay the same.
Peace oot.
Every ROM here in XDA has it's own thread where you can get instructions and help from other forum members. You don't need to be in a Telegram group for that.
Please take the drama elsewere, thread reported.
But what devs do with devices doesn't mean with buy or not a device, I joined too to telegram group, but I thought is not a ordened way to share things, so I left it.
no no, he does not talk the forum badly -
this is about the R5 + (Vince) ... and diesbzgl. are all Rom's a big disappointment ... whether listlessness, half-heartedness or inability ...
that's another chapter.
but VERY disappointed you can be !!!

This is not the right place for a thread like this. Please feel free to take up concerns with people in the correct channels, but XDA is not the place for Telegram issues.
