"Eye-Fi" is a new SD-card wireless adapter designed to provide wi-fi connectivity to digital cameras. It's also a 2GB SD memory card. How cool would it be if this could serve as a wireless adapter for the I-mate Jam/HTC Magician? Anybody think it could be made to work?

I think this has too much built-in intelligence to work. It basically has its own embedded computer and operating system.
I've already contacted the eye-fi, they said that it is not compatible with any Pocket PC devices. Too bad. :-(

What would be much more interesting would be to get eye-fi working in a camera and sending pics to your pda. Unfortunately eye-fi doesn't support adhoc. (so ICS on PC or wmwifirouter etc. on PDA won't work) There is a recent hack for xp using python that replaces the "eye-fi manager" so that you can bypass their setup. This doesn't give it adhoc just more functionality and privacy. With pythonCE can we do this on a pda?

btw. if you just want to get the pics uploaded from eye-fi in your pda, create a nested folder: DCIM\x in the root of the eye-fi card and put your pics there. no spaces in names, only .JPGs,

The new Eye-fi Pro 4gb cards are faster, handle raw format, and allow an adhoc connection. Cost more too, about $150
I still have an "Eye-fi Explore 2gb" and I really like it, but it doesn't do adhoc, only infrastructure. To add new wifi networks to the card you need to plug the card into an SD card reader in a usb port of a PC running the eyefi manager software. This means you need to plan ahead if going out with only the camera and not your PC. Captive portals won't work either, as there's no interaction between card and hotspot other than SSID/password. I have mine configured with about a dozen known SSIDs as well as alot of router default name/password combinations. Also, it comes with a year long subscription to the AT&T/Wayport network (mcdonalds, starbucks, etc)
It does a reasonably good job (in urban areas) of geotagging by looking at SSIDs in the area when a pic is taken ("fake GPS" similar to Loki or Google Latitude) This is with any SSIDs, not just configured ones... when the pic is taken it tags it with SSIDs it sees, and if it can't upload then, it will later upload with that data and consult the database to attempt to locate where the shot was taken.
I've got an old point and shoot Canon running CHDK. I can turn on the intervalometer or motion-detect setting, set the camera down somewhere, and if it's in a wifi hotspot that the card is configured to, I'll see the resulting pics on any internet connection by going to picasa or flickr, etc. Not exactly a streaming motion detect spy camera but it's fun.

I know this may seem rhetorical, as most people use their PDA as WiFi clients. However, i've noticed a plethora of cheap SDIO WiFi cards, many of them OEM's. In fact, I have an Ambicom branded SD WiFi card which is actually the same OEM card as produced by Spectec in Taiwan. Unfortunately i haven't seen a pocketpc driver by them that supports the softap function. The specs for the cards show that they can do "Host AP Mode", which is what it takes.
What this means, is that with these cards it should be possible to turn the Harrier/(Blueangel with SD Wifi Card) into an actual Access Point.
My knowledge of how the Windows Mobile kernel operates and its packet routing infrastructure is pretty much nil. I have seen that you can add ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) as a catalog option when compiling a rom for Windows CE. An older product called Segue SoftAP by PCTEL actually did something similar while running under Windows XP, and utilized the built in ICS on it. I'm just curious if anyone knows of a way to build a ROM that something like this could be done through. I've never even seen a DHCP server for pocketpc, so there would need to be a few new things written for sure.
I would just like to know if this is absolutely impossible to do because of the operating system, i know that the hardware can do and handle this, easily.
Also, to know if there is an interest in having something like this by the users in the community.
Would be nice with a video capture device - streaming video from the handset directly to connections.

There would be many benefits to having the device set up as an access point. Almost limitless.
I guess i'll answer my own question. Apparently there is no routing built in to the OS (PocketPC).
However, companies like airscanner have managed to write drivers which interface to NDIS 6.0 for a firewall. Someone writing a packet router would be really cool.

I spent allot of time searching the net for a wireless camera (for security purposes) that has the ability to transfer live video to my Qtek2020i which is wireless enabled.
I am not looking for an IP cam, I dont want to view the video by connecting to GPRS, I want my pocket pc to find the camera as a wireless access point and using some software I want to see the video from that camera, is there anything like that?
all of the wireless cameras I found has a reciever device to connect to TV or VCR and this is not what I want, and the others has the capability to send the video to internet and by accessing the site from the PDA you can see the video, this is also unwanted for me.
so please tell me if there is such a cam and how to buy it and how much, I really need such a product for controlling my office while I am moving in the building, my job includes moving allot to different offices, so I need to check if anyone mess around in my office during my absence directly. i dont want to record then watch, I need something live !

If I remembers correctly ASUS WL-HDD requires connection through an access point/router whereas the main selling point of Wi-Drive is its direct connection between end devices WITHOUT the need to go through the access point/router. However, you can also network the drive through an access point/router :lol:
I'm using Wl-Hdd since it's release to get my files from my pda. It's working like a charm. It is an access point and router, and you can make it a full linux server easily

With the WL-HDD, is it stand-alone? i.e. does it have an internal power source - or must be connected via a power adaptor?
And can it connect directly to the HTC Universal (without need of a switch or router?).
My thought is, I wonder if anyone has tried to connect an IPOD to a PPC device? wouldn't that be an ideal external HDD device?

The WL-HDD does not have built in battery, you need power adaptor unfortunately.

I haven't tried yet (still deciding if I should buy it or not), but since it's an Access Point it should connect no problem.

IPOD is not Wireless, you can use it only as an USB memory device.
People had connected their IPODS to USB Host enabled PPCs like FS Loox and it worked fine. Unfortunately there are no HTC converged devices with USB Host functionality at the moment.
Wl-hdd work perfectly as a stand alone product with any PPC. I'm using it for 1,5 years now and it is perfectly working on my universal. No physical connection needed except power source.
As for the Ipod, if you change the wl-hdd firmware, you can connect any USB device in the USB port to get access to it's files. So you cannot plug the ipod to the universal, but you can plug the ipod to the wl-hdd then access it through universal

The enclosure comes with a female connector for the hard disk which means hard disk like the 1.8 inch Toshiba (which comes with a female connector) cannot be used
That leaves us with the 1.8 inch Hitachi brand which comes with a male connector. Not much choice for the 1.8 inch hard disk since currently only 1.8 inch hard disks are only available from Toshiba and Hitachi

Just spoke to the manufacturer of Wi-Drive today
They will release the drive this coming July. I think I can get one from them before it goes to the market
Capacity : Casing comes with 30 and 60 GB 5400 rpm hard disk (for 1.8 inch)
Best of all!! Can connect direct with PPC besides notebook/laptop. They've an engineering test unit. Just waiting for production now.
Here's the explanation using WiFi. The drive will be recognised as a web folder instead of a drive by the PPC. This web folder will consists of your folders and files and you'll have to use IE browser to access them. Power input is 5V DC using mini USB which means you can charge it from your notebook/laptop USB ports or any external battery pack whihc provides a 5V DC output.

Nope. No pricing figure for the moment. They don't sell to end users because they're the manufacturer. The actual pricing will depend on the retail shops

OK, tested the WiDrive on my Universal today
Looks pretty cool...comes with Hitachi 1.8" 30GB hard disk
Managed to get it connected with my Universal using WiFi and access WiDrive using internet by typing a certain address on the address bar. The drive is treated as a web folder
Once login to WiDrive I'm able to download files to play (or save it) on my Universal
Also, can use my external 8800mAH battery pack (purchased from EastGear) to charge the WiDrive
Some issues though
a) cannot upload file from my SD card to WiDrive...hmmm
b) after playing a song I'll need to re-type the address at the PIE address bar in order to return to WiDrive
c) I think music and video cannot be streamed while playing on the Universal. What I mean is I'll need to download the music/video file to my Universal and the concerned program will be auto activated to play the music/video file.....have to check this further otherwise the drive just acts like another drive
Did not buy yet so no testing on notebook carried out. According to the shop streaming was done using the notebook as a driver is required to be installed on the notebook.
Well, I've discussed with WiDrive's boss on the above issues. Will discuss with their engineer tomorrow and feedback here.

There're some changes. I'll be getting a 1.8 inch 60GB IDE Hitachi Travelstar and the Wi-Drive casing separately (cheaper this way) by this weekend. If everything works out fine I'll be reporting back
BTW, I was told by the engineer of EDSLAB that OPERA works better than PIE on their drive

Hmm... Widrive looks good, but WL-HDD is still better in my mind. It can run off a battery (all PSP emergency batterys work, imagine my joy at finding that out!) ,it has an ethernet port for intergration to home networks (you can use it as a wireless access point) and it has USB host, so you can share USB drives, webcams, everything. It also comes up to 100gb, and i bet you itll be cheaper. you could even swap in a 1.8" hdd into the housing and put the battery in the space left, making it a neat solution.

lol... i wouldnt buy one of those. Max = 100mbps on wireless. On wired USB 2.0 or Firewire = 480mbps or 800mbps i think. I use my diamondmax 11 or my cheetah scsi 15k rpm drive and it goes really quick. I put it on wifi by hooking it up to another computer and mapping it or just use remote access. Anything is possible nowadays, i dont have to tell it to you. But it seems this hard drive can exist independently when signal is available. I dont know how that works but i am sure you need a lcd display to select a network or to enter the key. Just like microsoft Zune? Why dont you guys go for microsoft Zune now that i think of it. ^^

The point of these drives is mass storage on the universal. Read the thread before posting.
Hi all,
I've been using a carputer for some time now, but recently i find myself using my touch cruise more than anything else. It hooks up through BT and handles GPS and music without issues.
The only downside is the limited storage capacity it has compared to a full blown computer. (I have an 8gig SDHC)
Is there any way to enlarge this.
- I've been thinking about a NAS, but I'm unsure about the workings of this.
- AFAIK USB on the go is not supported, nor is USB host
- BT is another option, but is just way to slow for data transfer.
Any options ?

Maybe Network Folder Plugin will help you. It should mount a samba (windows shared) folder.
Can i connect to a NAS through this plugin?
If not, it kind of defeats the point to run a full blown computer in the car just to have file storage. Especially since I come from a carputer
well what are you storing file wise, several companies including Microsoft have storage available for mobile devices. windows live share, I use virtual mobile fore photos content etc.. sofar no mp3 support but it has some use and is free for the time being. There are several boxes out there that support usb host. maxtor or Buffalo make one I believe for dumping photos and music on the go.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S2, with 16GB of internal space and 64GB on a MicroSD card. I would like to have an app on the phone that, at a certain time every day (or week), connects via Wi-fi to the network share on the server, and syncs my MP3s. I have a few other file types mixed in with them too, such as AVI, VOB, TXT, that I don't want to be synced. I want it to compare the two locations and only copy what's new. Also, since the last sync, if I've modified any folder on the network share (i.e. changed file name or ID3 tag), then I want these changes to be reflected on the phone.
Now, the above is quite complicated, but I'm going to throw another spanner in the works now. The MP3s on the network share are mostly 256Kbps or 320Kbps. I don't really need this on the phone, and it woulkd mean I couldn't get all the music on there. But if it was 128Kbps I might. So I would like a program that would check the bitrate of the file and convert it if it is bigger than 128.
I realise it would take probably weeks to go through copying and converting 24,000 MP3, but if it does it all automatically I don't mind.
Is there anything out there that comes close to fulfilling these requirements?

well,you really ask for alot but try using kies air for samsung.
Hi, thanks for your reply, but a problem that instantly springs to mind is that with Kies Air one doesn't connect to the router, but directly to the PC. The PC in question doesn't have wifi (connects to the router via ethernet). Also, because of this direct wifi connection i would need to enable Internet Connection Sharing on the server, which i'd rather avoid.
Any other suggesions.
