official att wm6 release without bloat - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

Now that ATT released the 8525 wm6 is there someone who has removed the bloat? I would like to keep the official release for stability but not the extras. Is there anything out there or can I make a request for it by someone who knows what they are doing?

there plenty of roms already using the exact build that is in the ATT release.

most likely, vp3g will do it soon

Yes, but he wants the official build (3.62.yaddayadda.03 versus 3.62.yaddayadda.02).

mcorrie1121 you are right. I have tried most other roms and have had either stability or other issues. No problems so far with the actual official release for ATT. I just don't like the bloat, but I am not quite good enough to take it out myself and not ruin my phone.
I am trying vp3g's latest release now I will see how it works.
OK I have the wm6 .exe from ATT. I would like to break it down and edit the extended ROM to remove what I don't want. I have NBHextract, NBHgen, and Modified RUUUpdater but they may as well be Pig Latin. I have looked thru the forum and I am missing something, or is there an easier way that I don't know about. Any help?

Austinsnyc should be makin one soon. It was hinted at least. I have found his to be the most stable and fast ROM based on the old 3.62, and I used vp's for awhile. vp's ROM is very nice too, but this one just whips it, so I'm waiting.

If you want the AT&T rom minus the bloat, then flash the official rom and do a soft reset when the 3 second counter comes up. That will prevent the at&t customization software from running. The customization software consists of two parts, the first part lives in the \windows folder and is installed with the preAutoRun.exe and controlled by the PreConfig.txt file.
The second part is called by the first application and lives in the \Extended_Rom folder. You cannot see this folder by default. If you install total commander and manually type the folder location in the address bar, you will be able to see the files located in it. It is installed by the AutoRun.exe and controlled by the Config.txt file.
There is an application availabe here on xda(not sure where I found it) that allows you to mount all the extended rom partitions. After you install it and reboot, the Extended_Rom will show up in the file explorer as a folder. What I did was copy all of the preconfig and config files to a folder on my computer. I then modified the preconfig.txt and config.txt files to suite my tastes. I also edited the .xml files to remove the stuff I didn't want(creating all the music icons, installing the internet proxy, etc.). I put all the files I needed in a folder called cingular, and modified the path in the preconfig.txt and config.txt files to be \cingular instead of \windows and \extended_rom. Then I edited the registry settings under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm.
There are two settings that need to be changed, PreAutoRunCFG and AutoRunCFG. They point to the location of the two text files that control the installation of the bloat. You can't change the actual text files as they are located in ROM, not RAM. Once everything is sitting in the \cingular folder and the registry is modified, I kick it all off with the preautorun.exe and my customized at&t customizations are installed.
I only change/remove the things I'm sure I don't want/need. Anything I'm unsure about, I leave alone. You can tell that a lot of that stuff was written by programmers who didn't think anyone would ever look at it. Lots of commented out stuff left in there and other stuff listed as requested by so and so. Anyway, That's pretty much it. If you mess up, do a clear storage and try again till you get it just how you want it. I hope this helps someone.

Maybe you just would be happy by not installing the CUSTOMIZATION? I had the ATT WM6 for a while and if you prevent your device from customizing your Hermes (the installation after first start / screen alignment - you get a message on the screen telling you that IT WILL CUSTOMIZE YOUR DEVICE IN 3 SECONDS - simply soft reset your device within this 3 secs and you will end up with a pretty clean WM6 ROM).

There are other things that can be removed that arent included in the extended ROM, as well as other things that can be incorporated (SetAcousticParameter, anyone?). Besides, i dont have the attention span to do what thexman suggested

If i would do the soft reset right after install to keep the bloat from being installed like suggested then just added the ATT config cab would that work? The only thing I need ATT for is phone calls and SMS texts, no mms or internet. I have wi-fi for that. Then I could just find what I want and add it.

the at&t settings are only used for mms and internet. so in ur case u dont really need to install them.

Let me know what your end results are. I want to see how it goes.

alltheway I will let you know it might take me a day or so though
OK I installed the ROM and soft reset before extended ROM install. So far so good. I can make calls and send texts. Everything else seems to be working well. I will see how this works for a few days though maybe I will try another ROM such as Schaps or another cleaned out WM6 ROM to remove some of the unwanted Windows items. Thanks for the suggestions.

Extended ROM Questions - trying to understand it all

Hi,
I have been playing around with ROMs and reading stacks of posts about cooking your own, but am slightly confused. Most of the threads seem to assume a certain level of understanding and also most of the info seems to relate to modifying the nk.nbf file.
I have taken the Orange AKU2 update and then added the ms_.nbf and radio_.nbf files from the latest Dutch TMobile ROM and put it on my Universal, but when it installed it appears to have added a number of TMobile files.
So am I right in thinking that the operators modify the ms_nbf as well as the radio_nbf?
Also is there a definitive article or thread around providing a step by step approach to putting together a custom ROM?
There are some things I like about the Orange ROM, but other areas I would like to remove. Also there are some things I spotted on the TMobile ROM (like streaming video) that would be handy to have.
THanks in advance.

Okay, well I don't really know too much about the nbf files but when you do a ROM upgrade using whichever ROM you want, i.e., Orange, T-Mobile, I-Mate, etc, once the PDA reboots and then runs a customization it installs files that the individual operators have set for their version of the pda. The thing you should do is that before the pda starts customizing do a hard reset and after the reboot you'll see the basic Windows Mobile PDA. Then you should do an ExtendedROM unlock and then you'll see all the files that the operator has set the pda to install. What I did was try out all the different ROMs and still ended up with the latest T-Mobile UK ROM from BuzzDev.net. Then I did the tedious task of installing each one separately and then rebooting after each one to see what it changes. You can then add or remove the ones you don't want or want and edit the config.txt (on T-Mobile ROM) and then you have it all. Or after each format reboot before the customization, unlock the ExtendedROM and then install all the cabs you want and then reboot.
As for which one does what I really don't know too much. I do know the obvious ones like the MMS one and all but that's about it. There are a lot of good resources on BuzzDev that you should check out. Hope this helps.
Thanks.
I'm slowly getting to grips with it all, but just need some more time to run through all the messages on here to get a better handle on cooking your own ROMs.
It's a shame no one has the time to consolidate the great info on here and put it up on the Wiki.
operators put their customisation tools in ms_.nbf file, which acutally representst the extended rom.

WM6 "Carrierfree" ROM?

I think this the time for making the latest released roms to be clean of carrier files, so we get more of free memory and also everyone can build his own one with this rom..
so how about taking these roms and extract => dump files => delete carrier files => delete carrier registries => repack the rom files ==> we get a carrierless rom!!
so anyone with me??!
Hi,
I flashed the dopod release and directly after it has booted the first time, while this popup comes up telling one that after 3 sec it is going to install the carrier specific software, customize bla bla and so on, I did a soft reset. This way you stop it from installing. After that you can mount the extended rom, have a look at the cabs in there and manually install what you like.
This works fine and this way you get your carrierfree WM6.

thanks for reply!
what about AT&T rom? it has some carrier files in OS.nb.
also dopod rom has some CABs that are includes in OS.nb so after every hardreset you cant make choice of installing them or not because thay are in the OS.nb files.
and to delete them you have to reCock the rom and delete them!!!
My idea is to make a rom that has no little file of carrier or also a tiny registery!! not to flash it as it is!!
Those carrier files are in the extrom, not in the os.nb, aren't they?
I'll change to my other pc, dump the rom and have a look for carrier files.
Edit: Found 67 exe files in the dopod rom, but I think there are no carrier files in it.
Edit #2: Found 2 dopod files in it, dopod_black.tsk (Theme) and P_Sound_Dopod_WWE_0713.cab (Soundfiles)

Take a look at Pandora's ROM Kitchen (recent thread). It does exactly what you want: take a clean (AT&A) ROM as base and then **** the extra you want yourself...
If you don't want the whole kitchen just take the OS.nb from it (or extract the OS from the official ROM).
Normally operator specific stuff goes in the extrom (that's the real bloat). The primary customisation that starts first is OEM specific (normally) and happens from preconfig.txt in the windows directory. For instance on the official ROM it runs a program to increase the in-call volume, which is very desirable as it means you can hear people when you are in a busy situation.
well, i done littel research about the different files in both Dopod and AT&T roms and made a file list.
you can find some register files in at&t rom *.rgu anyway i think there is also some files are same in name but different in version or build. for example the dialer in dopod support video call while the one in at&t does not support video call but it support PTT.
so here is the file list i hope it help you for knowing the carrier files.

Hmm, as I wrote I installed some CABS manually afterwards directly out of the ext Rom and everything was working fine for me - but maybe in my noob way of doing so - I forgot something very important though everything worked excelllent as long I was testing it.
Nevertheless, I cooked my own rom now with the pandora kitchen - and this seems to work fine as well

TMobile un-official WM6 - Updated & Working :-)

Just created a T-Mobile branded WM6 ROM from the Official HTC Dopod ROM.
Got the T Mobile Theme, Splash Screens and Settings. Works pretty good and its my first attempt at cooking a ROM of any sort.
Remove Quickmark and Cybron VC cooked my own EXTRom and added the Fixed 3g Icon.
T Mobile settings are T-Mobile UK Only.
ROM now fixed and T-Mobile settings are working, Have also found the Clean 3G Icon dll and cooked that into the ROM. However the 3G I con I cannnot test till tomorrow as where I live 3G is not an option.
Please use the new link to download below.

I live in an area where i dont get 3G coverage I installed the 3g fix CAB and the T Mobile Fixed settings on the customisation from Extended ROM but they dont seem to have taken you are right. I am Looking to fix this ASAP cannnot work out why they dont work.
Already given up with the T Mobile fixed cab installing from customisation along with 3GIcon. Amazing that something that is in theory so simple just drop the CAB file into a new EXT ROM add the CAB install line in the config.txt and Flash off you go.
I have no idea why it doesnt run the CABS but then I am new to all this cooking lark. Just tried everything to get it working and failed.....
Sorry will remove the thread and the download.
Will post a new link when I have fixed the problems will approach from XML angle for the settings as suggested below by ChaoticDruid. Thank
Hi, I seen your other thread about the .cab, I cannot say for sure why that isnt working for you, I havent looked in the cab for the tmobile settings myself, but I imagine if you can, its just registry entries, and what you could do, is just cook an .xml into the ROM with the settings, and add the the .xml to the preconfig.text, and just cook the clean 3G .dll into the ROM, you should abandon using the extROM, really..but thats just my opinion.
There are .xml examples found on the forum and google, and you can even take apart some ROMs, and look for .xml files with names like "customization" etc. and see how they are laid out, or just modify an existing one.
Dont give up yet.
I didnt know the clean 3g Icon was avaliable in an OEM .dll file so I will that up. I have seen the xml files but seen a ROM yet that is WM6 and has an XML file that I can template from I know the T Mobile settings manually but not sure what strings they go in like you say I need an XML file that already has provider settings in so I can change them.
Hmm wondering now if there is a registry snapshot program for WM6 that like there is for windows. Could take basic setup snap then install the settings cab and take another then export the changes made.

Easy, search! most past rom thread have needed them, so links to CABs can be found all over the place!
Did a search on here for clean 3g icon and I found the CAb that way going to try and get the DLL though
Hi again, you can use sktracker to keep track of registry changes, and OCP cab manager is available in a trial, as far as finding an xml, just start dumping cooked roms, and opening the xml files with notepad, Im sure you'll eventually come across one with registry entries, and then just modify it, and add to your rom, but don't forget to add a line in the preconfg.txt, also you could have a peek at the one in the dumped rom, which contained the xml.
Thanks to you all I have got it working I have cooked in the DLL for clean 3G and also got T Mobile UK settings auto setup.

Here's where I get to show my stupidity!
All the other ROM I have flashed have come with a utility to run the process. I tried replacing a previous rar file with this one and running the utility I had, but it changed nothing. I have read all the guides, the step by steps, etc, but the info seems to be for full packetsm not how to insert a new rar. I am dense. I am uneducated, I am sorry!
Thanks Shodowmite. It's good to have someone taking care of us ATT dudes.
What is the difference with other ROM ?
Is there something specific for AT&T ?
Sorry if the question is stupid, but I don't know AT&T particularities... ;-)

ok, have you flashed hard-spl on your phone before? If not, search for it and flash it! Next, you need winrar or some other file extraction program to extract the rar file (a compressed folder) to get the files out. Then you'll find the installer files inside, you run the exe... Hope this helps.

Mainly the big thing is this includes by default the sms/mms and data/proxy settings for cingular/att's network. You can use this rom with another carrier, but you'll need to delete those settings or install you own over top of them.
It's the little things
Thanks for the patience with my idiocy. I got WinRar and am flashing now.

We all have to learn at some point, I was no better when I started long ago... Don't worry about it and just learn at your own pace... Hope you like the rom!
I've updated to Shadowmite 1.1, while this is still a "beta" if you will, it's perfectly stable and appears good. Use this one if you want the HTC Home Plugin available... I've also removed windows live and streaming media in this version:

Thanks. Good job. Downloading.
Ive had it running for a few days now and have noticed marked improvement on battery life. My only challenge has been running out of program memory during IE sessions. I run MemMaid and clean up, then I can go again, but I'm wondering if I have something set wrong.
Hmm, not sure, but I will be releasing another version maybe tomorrow with a increased available program memory using a 4mb pagepool instead of the stock 6mb.
Slightly off topic but is there a way / application to load apps & information in one go after flashing a new rom or is installing all the cabs one by one the only way.
Thanks in advance
S
Well, dunno if it helps much, but my HTCustom app, which is in my roms has a CABS button which allows you to choose a folder and it starts all cabs in it to be installed for you... but it needs human interaction.
In other news, the rom is ready and uploading now...
Version 1.1 is posted, now with 4mb pagepool, should increase your program memory a little and make it perform a little more quickly. I think this is about perfect now, let me know!
Nice ROM, but...

Hi, A very nice looking ROM - for which... thanks!
BUT... I keep getting... "An unhandled error has occured in the shell. Attempting to restart the shell [ok]". Soon as I hit the OK, phone reboots.
Now, to help u diagnose... I have installed NOTHING on top of your ROM. Only change I made from stock is I removed your Cingular settings .cab and installed the standard HTC ones for my UK Vodaphone network. (Actually, I was getting this error BEFORE I even removed the Cingular .cab)
Only other thing I can say is, I also unchecked the BatteryStatus plugin from the Today items (as I don't like it or need it... or do I, with this ROM? Maybe I will re-enable it a while...)
That's all. I'll try and stick with this ROM as it's the kind of thing I've been working on for myself... nice, clean and tight... but I've had no time recently to develop ROMs so it's easier for me to run with your work and let you do the head scratching!! Still, a nice effort so far - thanks again!
Moz.
Weird, I've never seen that error. I hate to say it, but could you start with the rom freshly flashed and tell me anything I can do to cause this to occur? Or is it random? I do run the battery status plugin on mine (very useful info, especially the current draw) but I've just removed it to see if I can get the error.
Let me know if you have any procedure I can try to get this error.
Also, you removed the cing.cab and then installed yours and ran it? That should be fine as the only cingular branding is that cab being ran after the welcome.
Fixed it... I think!
Ok, so it seems to be your 1.51 version of the HTC X-Button task manager. I always set the "End progs by tapping X" (not the default tap-and-hold option..) The previously mentioned error only ever happens when I'm tapping X to close down something or other... So, I installed my own .cab of this app (v1.5 build 29196) and all is now fine!
I'll probably do a fresh flash of your Rom tomorrow (its 2am now here) just to be sure, but I think I'm right in saying that your implementation of the x-button app in rom does not give the x-button icon in /start/settings/system... (i now have this by virtue of my reinstalling the app...) I think this icon *is* needed because if you choose to turn off the x-button "shortcut" thingy in the today screen there would otherwise be no way to get back to the x-button option settings.
Hope this helps...
Moz.
a-ha, I got the error now myself, but only if set to close app on clicking the X and furthermore then closing a system app that is running from shell32.exe. For some reason my entries of immune apps aren't being taken as immune. I'll look into this. Good catch!
The program however is in settings, system and is listed as task manager...
Ok, here is the fix, just install this cab (reg entries only) and it'll be working after the next soft reset... I'll figure out why this didn't work from the main hive before the next release.

Installation Notes:
Your device must be unlocked for this to work. If you don't know how to unlock it, there is a link on my signature with a guide on how to do this. Also, this is only for the HTC Vogue - which is a CDMA device (no SIM card). It will NOT work for any device that doesn't fall under this. Not sure if you have a Vogue? Go to the WIKI and find out. I am not responsible for damage to your device (not that anything should happen, but legal disclaimers are meant for the "what ifs" )
Drop the XDA_UC folder located in the rar file onto the root of your SD card. Flash and soft reset. The UC process will start upon second boot. You can add/remove any cabs that you want to (or not want) so that the system will install them automatically.

Good rom, sped is very good, and stable. Minor problems with menus when trying to add programs to Manilla Launcher.GPS is FAST!! The fastest I've seen. Been running for 1/2 day and no real problems. Kudos Dude!
Great ROM, performance is one of the best, it is a good idea for the power users to customize and choose the needed apps for themselves (even though this ROM already has lots of nice apps preinstalled), but for lazy people like me, it is a bit work to install lots of things (like the input methods) and the HTC 2DManila, etc. Still customizing the ROM and testing, but so far, very impressive. Thanks!
btw, BT PAN is not working for this version. In imported the registry entry I exported from NFSFAN's ROM and it worked again.

Is that the cab that you posted in LMiller's thread? If so (and with your permission, that is) I would like to include it in my UC folder.

Thanks!

Well, I will see if I can cook EzInput (or at least drop it in the UC folder) since I changed something in the shared modules and I think that may be the reason why it is working now. M2D does not have to be manually installed. It will do it by itself upon second boot. In fact, you do not need to install anything in the UC folder at all, it will all install itself as long as you put the XDA_UC folder in the root of the SD card as per my instructions.
Hey Egzthunder,
By mega dialer fixed do you mean you got rid of that annoying scrollbar???
I keep going back to NFSFAN's V1.00 due to the dialer, I don't like the standard wm dialer, but I also can't stand the stupid scrollbar that appears with the others in 6.5.X builds................this thing is primarily a phone after all!!!!!!!!! ((at least I use it at that now and then)
Thanks,

Soooooo..........???????
What's the secret???
Since NFS, WDM, and Vin stopped development I've started experimenting again, that may include my own ROMs (did that until I tried NFSFAN's Bell Rom back in the early 6.1 days and figured I couldn't beat the big boys).
Great work on both your ROM's by the way, but I wouldn't mind trying the fix on my own concoction (is that a word????) as well!!!!!!!
Thanks guys,
Jason (also a confirmed ORD!!!!!!)
EDIT: Dang, quoted the wrong reply!!!! I'm talking bout the scroll bar dialer fix

I believe there is one (I can't recall where though). Do a search on the site (or Google) and it should come out. If I can find it, I will post it.
help yourself to my bubble breaker and solitaire oem if you need it
