I am new and lost - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

Ok so I have a 8925. Love it, but don't want all the AT&T on it so I figured I would flash it....well I ran into the problem where none of the flashing software I have found will work with Linux. I am running Ubuntu and cannot get any of the flashers to work. Also I have STILL having a hard time connecting my 8925 to my computer because of the Ubuntu OS.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also is the 8925 info in the Hermes sub-category? or the Herald? I have seen info in both and was a little confused. Sorry if this is the wrong section.

go to Kaiser forum for 8925

Ok so you're new AND you've got better phone than me - I'm incredibly jealous so please go away - here is probably the best place to go to http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kaiser.
Oh yes, welcome to the forum and enjoy

thanks. the only reason I have a better phone is because my mom got it....lol im 22 and in college and needed a new phone (since my 8525 got ran over by a car) so I told my mom she would LOVE this one, the 8925. She bought it and couldnt figure out how the hell to do anything with it so I traded he my older RAZR for the 8925....lol
Thanks and love you mom....lol

You've probably gone to the right forum now, but if by any chance you read this. you should google for flashing from SD card.
this should help you to get round the issues of the flashing software being written for M$ Windows.
all you basicly do is extract the rom/radio image from the executable put it on the root of your SD card with a file name and boot your phone into bootloader mode (IIRC)
no need to use the PC so should resolve your issues.
(wow well done not getting flammed for that post btw... this isn't the friendliest forum in the world!)

BTW also... well done on that phone swap trick... my dad is often good for that kinda fun and games

Step by Step from box to rocks

First let me apologize for the title of this thread, I really couldn't resist. I just bought a i-mate jasjam and have spent the last several days reading these forums, the wiki, and all the other places that clicking things here will take you. I want to say right out that EVERYTHING I know about the Hermes I learned from this site, and that I am a complete beginner, and please do flame away if i am wrong. I'd rather get insulted online than have a brick in my pocket.
THe one thing that there isn't in the wiki (that I found anyway) is a current, step by step for total noobies like me who don't know what to do first and get scared by dealing with more than three file types in one sitting, that uses the SD card method. It seems that the SD method is faster, easier (especially if you run Vista), and even a little safer that the "old school" RUU method.
Soooo, I'd like to write a new wiki page to this effect, and am more than happy to put in screenshots, links, host file downloads, etc. What i'd REALLY appreciate is if you senior types could take a look at this simple outline and tell me if there is something drastically wrong with it. After a good schooling I'll post a complete article with more copied info from the threads and complete sentences and punctuation and stuff.
PROPOSED "DAY-ONE, JUST OUT OF THE BOX CAN"T WAIT TO" UPGRADE
1.enter bootloader mode to check sp version
2.format an SD card to FAT32, checking card integrity and fixing errors
3.Use Winar to Extract the .NHB file from Hard-SP-v7.zip, transfer to SD card with card reader and rename to HERMIMG.NHB
4.put the card in the phone and enter the bootloader by pressing side OK, Power, and soft reset button (with stylus). Once in bootloader mode accept the upgrade
This safe-nates things up, and CID unlocks the phone, right?
5.re-format SD card to FAT32, checking card integrity and fixing errors
6. Use WinRar to Extract the .NBH from HERM_Radinly_1.41.00.10_CustomRUU, transfer it to the SD card and rename it HERMIMG.NBH
7. put the card in the phone and enter the bootloader by pressing side OK, Power, and soft reset button (with stylus). Once in bootloader mode accept the upgrade
8. check the radio version in system info
9. re-format the SD card for FAT32, checking integrity and fixing errors
10. Use WinRar to Extract the .NBH from WM6 ROM of choice, transfer it to SD card and rename HERMIMG.NBH
11. Put the card in phone and enter the bootloader mode as above, when in bootloader accept the upgrade. Follow instructions from mrvanx for activesync
12. transfer my CAB files for applications to (Temp?) folder on card and then run each of them to install my apps (Skype, CeStar,TengoThumb, etc.)
Does this sound about right? Thoughts? Flames?
Thanks to all for such fantastic work, donations on the way for all who wrote files I have downloaded over the past few days, you guys rock!
whats with the SD card upgrading?
you can run HardSPL by itself, you dont have to extract and put the nbh file on ur storage card.. unneccesarry steps if you ask me..

Well, I run Vista, and I like the idea of not having to fiddle with the drivers in order to do RUU, and I saw a few posts that some people had difficulty getting things to work with Vista. Also, posts have led me to beleive that it is faster to do it this way, which would lead to less chances of things going wrong (it's really hard to make Vista stop doing things in the background all the time). Also, there are already really awesome guides for doing it the RUU way, but not one for a complete SPL/Radio/ROM upgrade using this method, I think it appeals to a lot of people, including the dreaded Mac user. If it's not actually a good way please do explain, and finally, to me it just seems plain easier. I've only found a few posts that had troubles with the method and dozens that praised it. thanks for replying!!
Madcap, thanks for the input, I was going for continuity but I take your advice, keep 'em coming!!!
oh...you didn't mention Vista in your original thread.. lol .. best advice I can give you ... Throw vista in the trash.

Yep, I ll drink to that
ugh .. u mentioned the D work.. great.. now I'm going to relapse..
Step 4 does not CID unlock the device. It looks like it just installs Hard SPL which will allow the user to recover from a bad radio flash.
Of course this should not matter as there really isn't a need to CID unlock any more (unless you want to unlock/unhide your EXT ROM)
HardSPL just makes your phone Temporary superCID right or something to that effect.

Cool, it was my understanding that Hard SPL temporarily makes you super CID (as Madcap said) allowing you to flash on any ROM you want, for all intents and purposes is this not pretty much the same thing as unlocking? Not arguing, just trying to clarify. A lot of noobs know that CID is an issue and that they need to disable it somehow when they flash......
Please keep comments coming,Thanks!!!!
P.S. MOD, in my sleep addledness I think I posted this in the wrong place, should it be moved to the UPGRADE forum? THANKS!!
P.P.S. Drinking is the only way I can tolerate having a Vista machine, we all were so happy about getting our new laptops this year, and then we turned them on....it's like getting a christmas present in the shape of a new bicycle, but when you tear off the wrapping paper there's really a tetanus shot inside.
SUCCESS!!
I followed the OP steps (with very minor modification) and was able to go from a completely new, out of the box, never even put in a sim card phone to HardSP-V7, upgraded radio, new WM6 ROM (Schaps, this ROM is awesome, thanks!!!). All without using a cable or upgrading any drivers. From beginning of first download to totally upgraded was one hour. Why anyone would ever do this the old-fashioned way is beyond me, especially if you are running Vista. I'm making a tutorial and have collected the few little things you need to do this and will add a wiki article with pics ASAP.
Thanks to everyone for all the great info and hard work here, a complete noob like me can go from 0-60 entirely by reading this site. I am loving this phone more by the minute!!
A noob who has read the posts and wiki, and then created and tested a step by step routine for others like himself in order to address something that the wiki doesn't.
A fine example that a lot of others should note.

Sorry man, I just couldn't help myself. I am in love with Vista. No problems whatsoever with it. Have had it installed since it came out and never had to re-install. Speed is the same as when I installed it. Can't say that for XP! LOL. I forget how many times I had to install that piece of........................

p.s no flames........please.
I love Vista. Its given my two year old laptop a new lease of life.
Hi mlalahoi,
I am getting a lot of issues after installing CE-Start. Played virtually with every WM 6 ROM arround and still experiencing freezing.
Have run Shadow and LVSW without CE-Start for couple of days and both ROMs was very stable and fast. After CE-Start lot of problems.
Will be nice to hear your experience with the Chinese characters

Did you download the 2.8 Suite from the mobem website here AND use thier installer to install TO THE PHONE (install to SD doesn't work)?
I had similar problems when I went through the process of getting my hermes to be dual English and Chinese. THe first time I tried to manually install some cab files I found on a chines forum somewhere, totally jerked my normally very good Shaps ROM. I ended up having to do a hard reset, trying to uninstall the cabs just caused an unrecoverable hang. Make sure you use the official, latest install program and install to the phone, mines been flawless ever since.
Without registering you don't get the dictionary, but you can get a really good free version of CEDICT for mobiles here, it allows you to search by pinyin w/wo tones, english, or chinese characters. If you have trouble getting it to copy-paste between other apps try this app from the Wiki.
I have a collection of good ppc Chinese learning tools, pm me if you want to set up a file transfer, and do check out www.mandarintools.com for all your CHinese computing needs, no affiliation, just a great site.
Hi mlalahoi,
Thanks for the links! Actually I was using all the time v2.8 of Ce-Star, including the original installer - never used cabs to install. I found that "my" version of Ce-Star package is 6KB less than the one you recomended - here might be the problem. During the weekend will flash a new Rom and will play with the "new" Ce-Star 2.8 -- hope it will rock
I am using the ppc version of 金山 (PowerWord) and it serves me well. My Chinese characters needs are very simple ones - to be able to reed text and e-mails in Chinese, and rarely to answer using characters.
Will send you feedback about stability of the ROMs with "new" Ce-Star

How I bricked / un-bricked my Vogue 6900

Just thought I'd drop this here... Despite how much I read and re-read all the instructions, I mis-understood the two unlockers, and flashed the Alltel ROM on my Verizon XV6900 with the 0.40 Unlocker and wound up with a brick.
Even flashing the Verizon RUU dump wouldn't fix it... SPL 2.01 RGB screen and that's it.
So after much research... MTTY to the rescue. set 16 0, task 8, and viola... unbricked! (I think flashing the verizon ruu first was important)
No storage card needed (or possible on the Verizon, there's no slot!)
Thanks all... still trying to get GPS working now, so far nothing.

There is a microSD slot on the XV6900. It is on the right side of the phone under the chrome trim. You can see a small SD icon on the side of the phone next to the stylus under the battery cover!

Not trying to be a flamer here ... but ... you should really learn about your phone stock ... capabilities ... features ... etc. ... prior to doing custom flashes ... especially with the radio ... fortunately for you and me ... it is extremely hard to "brick" a HTC phone ... it may seem bricked ... but I've only ever seen a couple true bricks ... most can be recovered by the heavy hitters here
My point is that you really need to understand your phone and what you're trying to do prior to doing custom roms ... unlockers, relockers, etc. ... this is extremely important when doing radio changes ... fearless and aggressive is no way to approach these changes
And as always .... read ... read ... read ... did I mention READ!!!!!
Again ... not flaming you ... kinda using you as an example so others will learn and maybe keep the number of true bricks to a minimum
Fuzzy
I agree, I got a little excited with this and should have taken my time... My last phone was an Apache xv6700 and I had a blast flashing that and upgrading it over the past 2 years. I rushed into it with this one because I'm an impulse guy and had just bought the phone within 24 hours
me too!

could you explain how to use mtty! i "bricked" my xv6900 a couple weeks ago too. its stuck on the rainbow screen with the original spl (took a few flashes to get there)! i tried mtty when i did it and there wasnt a usb option in the program! im running on vista. already got my replacement too!
Not sure how to help you... There was a USB entry in the list when I did it, on XP.
On a separate note, I got GPS working and it's incredible.
Nice to see a Verizon user with GPS working!
Mind posting a little guide? I have my Vogue on order right now and want to update it right away for the GPS.

Here are the steps I took to successfully get the Verizon hacked with gps:
1. get it hooked up with activesync
2. unlock with imcokeman 0.40 unlocker
(the docs said to flash to the original rom here, but there is no verizon ruu, and my phone auto-reflashed itself anyways and ran customizations)
3. unlock with imcokeman 2.31 unlocker
4. install the alltel RUU (should be in sticky thread)
5. download Build OS from ppckitchen.org and use the updater to get the vogue 6.1 gps 3.02 kitchen
6. pick options and build, flash..
fire open google maps, pick menu->use gps.. magic.
It helped me out of a jam tonight, lost in bumblefukk and found my way back with it.
could you please explain in step-by-step detail as to how you unbricked your xv6900?
I'm currently working on my friend's xv6900 (TyTN II user myself) and unlocking and flashing roms on this phone is so different (yet kind of the same?) and I'm now at a point where I'm stuck at the HTC startup screen and thats about it. where did you get MTTY and how exactly do you use it? I tried downloading one but it was a very old version (2001) and I'm pretty sure that it's not the one you were using.
if anyone else knows how to unbrick this phone please chime in thanks a lot!

HSPL Question

I have read all of the posts about false positives for Viruses. I have tried completely cutting off my AVP (norton) as well then I get error 0x80004007 I have tried adding a DEP exception, but I am unable to unzip the HLSP to find the .exe to add. I hope I am posting this in the right place, could someone please help me or guide me to a place where I might find some help.

you could try downloading it using your phone, and then transfer it via usb to your computer, if its just your avp keeping you from downloading it.
my guess is that youre using vista or 7 right?
my best advice is if at all possible, use a computer with xp sp3. i have tried on vista a zillion times and it never finishes flashing a rom for me, and wouldnt hspl either.
i know alot of people have had success using vista and 7, but imho its best to save yourself the trouble if possible and use xp at least for hspl, since it'd be a pain to fix if it errored halfways thru and you only have to hspl once. with a rom, not as big a deal, just have to re-flash if it went bad or at worst flash from sd card
Yes, I am using Vista it seems to download fine. The file is 1,891kb. I had not thought about downloading it to my phone, unzipping it and sending it to my PC. I do not have access to a SP3 XP computer. I guess I will try my luck with vista tonight and if it does not work I will just have to wait for my contract to expire and get and ANDROID.
Ask around (friends, family, etc.) for a computer with XP, somebody has to have one. And certainly better than waiting around for your contract to expire and buy a new phone. Just between my wife and I, we have three XP systems!
I managed to get the HSPL Program working by downloading it on my phone and transfering it. I tried auto and manual to no avail. I got the commercial use error and tried to donate but when i dialed *#6# I could not find the IMEI number. Behind my battery there are 2 numbers, which would I use to donate with? I would not want to donate and not be able to benefit from it. If I use try to HSPL on another computer will I have to donate in order to get it to work?
Why do you need the imei number? When you run the hardspl program, you follow the instructions and donate true the program. You never need to search for you imei number (atleast I can't remember that)
The donation page asks for it. I donated and am still unable to get it to work. Does any one know the best way to contact Olipro?

My IMEI number is the one on the top, and is all numbers. The SN on mine has letter and numbers. On my ATT Tilt2 it says "IMEI" and "SN".
You need to do *#06#. Don't drop the "0"...
Also if you have not Hard SPLed a rhodium from your PC before it should allow you to do it without the donation. Donate if you want, it helps for when you get a new device so the HSPL is done for that too, but you shouldn't need to to HSPL your first rhodium.
Cheers....
I did donate, I still did not have any luck. I can only hope they will respond to my emails/support ticket. It is not looking to good after reading the main HSPL thread. Anyone got any other tips for a CDMA TP2 on USCC.
Dear ,
I have a problem, when I was trying to run HSPL in Auto mode or even Manual mode the program is stop working and close >>>> Please help
Make sure you are using the CDMA HSPL... There are 2 - GSM & CDMA. HSPL GSM shouldn't allow itself to be flashed onto a CDMA phone and vice versa, though you CAN flash the wrong OS if you don't have HSPL...

How to actually update DesireHD to 4.0

Sorry Folks, I'm new to this site/forum, I would like to upgrade my HTC Desire HD to the 4.0 update, which I read/watched is working well. My problem is I'm fairly handy with my phone and somewhat with computers. But I don't see/understand how to actually go about that. I thought I saw somewhere, that I am to factory reset my phone, I can handle that, but I guess what I don't understand, is how I actually get the update ONTO the phone. Do I just go this website and clink on a link from my phone and it will take over? If so, which one, I see links all over the place. Should I remove my memory card? I'm assuming this site is for really phone, computer savy people. I just want to try the update. Would be happy to donate to the site, once I get it going. Can someone please help me. Thanks for everyone's time of reading this. Sorry for my ignorance.
Cheers.

Before screwing your phone read this guide carefully Post #7 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1824379)
There are also lots of interesting stuff in there so read, read and read.
Hi, its a little more complicated than you suggest in your post.
First you will need to disable the security on your device (known as s-off) and flash a custom recovery.
You need to download the rom you wish to install and save it to your sd card. See here for a list of custom roms, there is a section for Android 4.0:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1610483
Boot the phone into recovery, wipe you phone data and factory reset then install the rom.
You can use this to unlock the phone and flash clockworkmod recovery:
http://tau.shadowchild.nl/attn1/?p=74
Do loads of searching this forum and googling so you fully understand the process as there is a chance of bricking your phone if it goes wrong. If you do your homework, are methodical and computer savy as you mentioned you should be fine.
Good luck!
Thanks, But...think I'm screwed.
Thanks Guys for your help, but I think this is way beyond me. Its not that I'm lazy, but I can't see myself reading tons of posts and researching for days to do this. I'm having a hard time even finding relevant info that pertains to what I'm trying to do, links and stuff everywhere. Doesn't seem like a lot to ask for to have a step by step guide. You know what I mean ie: Step 1, Factory Reset, Step 2, download this file Step 3. Run it etc... Oh well, I will just suffer with this phone, and probably get stung getting out of my contract early and get a Samsung G3 or something. I had thought this was as easy as factory resetting my phone, downloading a thing or two and then just running it. Too bad there wasn't a store or place I could take this to, to get it done properly by people in the know. Would gladly pay to have this done.
Thanks.
Everything you need is in the link and guide glevitan gave you. But you do need to read. If you don't want to, the rooting and flashing isn't for you.
Sent from a dream.
