Increase system memory? - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Is there a way to transfer the amount of built in storage memory to the system memory? I remember in the earlier versions of Windows Mobile, that you can set this...but I don't see this option anymore.
Thanks.

Short answer.....NO!!
Long(er) answer....since WM5 cam out with the persistent storage (where all your stuff doesn't get lost if your battery goes flat), the size of the memory available is dictated by how the ROM is built - i.e. what applications have been "cooked" into it.
The only way you can make any adjustments to what memory is available is to install a WM6 cooked ROM (there are loads to choose from for practically every WM device); these are built by the ROM chefs with various amounts of "free memory after install"....everything after that is dictated by what applications you install on top of the base ROM.
Hope that helps,
Mark.

Correct !
I'll only add here, that you can also download a 'vanilla' rom of any wm6 version and add on applications of your own need and desire or even cook a rom according to your needs.

Beta testing help - multiple cab install, settings backup, etc

Just that wanted to ask what ppl have found to be best ways to install all your favourite apps/settings if u are changing roms offten?
I just started recently and have tested some 3 or 4 roms now, but already i find that doing all my customizing and app install is tedious, so i was looking for some method to make it easier.
* i have seen an app that could roll multiple cabs into one - that would make reinstalling all cabs at once after new rom easier, but i cant find the app any more. any ideas on this one?
* backing up rom differences after doing customizations - what app could handle that? propositions?
If we can work some method to do this fast and easy we would get a lot more beta testers hence a lot faster development cycle could be achieved. (=

There are no shortcuts my friend. Some apps are installed to main memory and some to storage card, when installng apps there is interaction involved, therefore no universal solution.
Look here - you can integrate the new sys folders (apps) by building your rom in the kitchen (klick it on). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=317866
You can do a backup with spb backup. This way you can keep all installed programs and changes. You can restor your backup in different roms too but you have to be aware that this would mess up a few thins.
Tryed this http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/pocketpcinstallationcreator.shtml one out - managet to create install with multiple cab files - so far so good.
But when i installed this merged install on my wm5 emulator it ended up adding links to cab files in programms folder - so much for instalation - useless.
Gues the search goes on.
Make your own extended rom with all your cabs in, this will do the trick. Its quite easy - its not like cooking a rom - i could do a simple tutorial if people wish - it only requires 2 apps
Meschle - yes, please, a tutorial for extrom making would be good, as i am still a bit green to start cooking roms - extrom would be nice way to start i suppose.

Ok i'll post something tonight then in the artemis upgrading forum.

Hey guys one downside to ext rom way - when installing cabs it does not give you option where to install (main memory or storage card) so everything installs to main memory.
This is ok for the programs you normally install there and registry entries. You can make a new cab that installs directly to storage card but that is a different story
OK, now i am a bit confused. As i understand there is a ROM memory on Artemis(128MB) which is divided in multiple areas - IPL1, IPL2, SPL, Splash, Radio, OS, ExtRom.
This ROM memory is writable by way of flashing. There is also storage area(not microSD) in device and operative memory.
So, as i unterstand it, putting apps in ExtROM is a pure saving, cus ur storage memory is not wasted.
Do i understand it correctly?
With the artemis rom, if you omit extended rom in your nbh building you get more storage memory (an addition of roughly the size of the omited ext rom) Likewize if you include extended rom then you loose equivalent memory from storage - so there is no advantage to having apps (i.e executables) in extended rom but for convenience sake to have cabs and settings can be useful. I suggest keeping extended rom small (2mb) so you dont loose much storage space.
Extended rom tutorial added here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=327203
well maybe not 10 minutes then

For people who do not have an extended ROM - would'nt it be similar if they kept all the Cabs in 2577 Folder in the Storage Card with Autoexec and config files to execute them sequentially? I remember doing something like this when I was using the XDA IIs - but then now -
In my case, I rarely need to install anything except TomTom and Fullscreenkeyboard from SPB. The rest - I peek into the Cab using WinCE Cab Manager, then export the contents and now have made one big Cab (appx 4MB in size) with all my registry entries, tweaks, executables, shortcuts and copying relevant files into directories.
That way I execute only three cabs after a Hard reset and moreorless everyting is in place.
Yes dev - i used to have that in my orange spv - an autorun.exe in \2577 folder - last time i tried didnt work as i wanted - but i agree worth looking into.
With the ext_rom - the purpose was to add one for those that dont have.
Ok, was trying a quite a few roms that i had today, extracted em, but did not get the extrom.nb )=
Tried to open os.nb with winimage, but it kept saying something about wrong fat etc.
Is the extrom.nb different form os.nb and other *.nb? Why cant winImage open other nb files? Or is there something else i am missing?
Also, tiried SKtracker(didnt find any free app) demo - made snapshots before and after installing apps, then tried to export relevant registery subtrees.
That brings me to that there is no import functionality in phm regedit, but i found other free regedit app called TRE which can import/export edit etc.
Maybe this TRE tool is worth including in roms, if any cookers are reading.
Any better way to hack registery?

I mentioned this on another thread, but I discovered that FdcSoft's understated Task Manager v2.8 has a supperb regedit built in. It does everything that PHM Regedit does, but it can export and import really easily, just like Windows regedit. As meschle pointed out, PHM's is faster, but I still use the bloated Task Manager just because its regedit; and it also has lots of other stuff that comes handy on occasion.
Oh, great! So many stuff to fiddle with in meschle's PremiumPlus rom that I must have missed this one.

[Obsolete] Pandora Naked ROM with Big Storage

Here's my Naked 5 ROM. It includes the following:
Windows Mobile 6 Professional CE OS 5.2.1620 Build 18128.0.4.4
Camera 4.0 build 28276
Arcsoft MMS 4.2
Internet Sharing
AT&T Black Stock Dialpad (3G in next post)
10 Button Black Comm Manager
Comm Manager Vibe Toggle
8525 Keyboard Mapping
PreConfig launches SetHSDPA & SetAccousticParameters.
Points to note:
Button 5 is mapped and ready to use / PTT is disabled
It uses Bepe's Big Storage OS.nb/XIP v3.60 and is based on a stripped version of austinsnyc Lite ROM (with permission - thanks dude!)
It does not launch extended ROM or storage card installations, nor does it include a radio, IPL/SPL, splash screens, extended rom, or anything else. JUST THE OS.
Memory Details:
Storage Free: 80.04
Program Free: 30.49
(Launcher and poutlook.lnk removed from /Windows/Startup - nothing installed, after reset and fully rebooted)
I would recommend you install the .NET Framework after flashing, as I did not include 2.0 or 3.5 in the base and some programs you install / use may require it to work. See the next post for links / downloads.
Why? I wanted a super stripped and fast base to add my cabs to with a crapload of storage. I don't have the time to keep tweaking my custom rom configuration, so this will give me the most flexibility and performance.

Using KarhU's stats, I put together this build based on performance statistics. It's clean and fast - and should run as fast (if not faster) as the best one's out there. I should have started a new thread - as it's a whole new ball of wax - but it's look and feel is exactly what I started after.
Here's KarhU's great thread on benchmarking. I've learned a lot from his work - it's an excellent asset for tuning

Note too that I didn't include the .rgu files. Please use the kitchen if you want to use the components.
Evolution History
Pandora Naked 1 - 3 was based on the Kitchen version 9.5, but had a problem with PIE speed
Pandora Naked 4U was based on austin's rom release, but setacousticparameters didn't launch correctly and was missing a few notification alarms

Additional Cabs for ROM
Here's the .NETFX and SQL CE files:
.NETFX CE 2.0
.NETFX CE 3.5
SqlCE 2.0
SqlCE 3.0 (already in ROM)
Here's some items I've found on the forum, or in the case of the Random Access package, I built a cab for it and included the registry settings to integrate it into the dialer / hard button 113.
Hi, is this a 3.60 ROM, or a newer ROM with bebe's 3.60 mod?

It uses bepe's modded 3.60 OS.nb/XIP, and it does not include a 3G dialer.
I retained the HTC3GVT.dll within the rom in case you have your own 3G version you want to use.
*Edit: The dialpad you install needs to have all the components, including the dialpad and smartdial dll's, to use with 3G.
Hi,
I'll give it a try as I'm fed up of several troubles had with cooked in apps-
You advise to install .NET Framework 3.5 cab FIRST? That is, before installing the ROM? I'm surprised but will do as you say.
Thanks.
EDIT: Well, I was unable to install it first, as it says the version is not intended for this device...

If you use the CAB-file with .wm. in it (NETCFv35.wm.armv4i.cab), it should work..
You'll find it at ftp://ftp.servage.net/Upload/Micorosft .NET CF 3.5 RTM/CABS/

hi Matt,
I wonder: if you install everything afterwards using cabs, will this use more memory or will it be the same as coocked in ROM? In other words: do cooked-in programs use the same memory (size and type) as CAB-installed programs, as far as you know?

Sorry for the cab mistake, I'll fix the reference in the first post and make it clearer. I meant to say "after flashing, install the .NET framework before installing any other programs."
As for the memory comparison, the total space consumption is about the same, but you don't have the extra dsm and .rgu files, and the files are installed to the correct target directory, rather than all residing the windows directory - increasing file system performance (at least while browsing the contents of the /Windows directory anyway).
Edit: Updated context of post 1 and redirected link to original thread on .NET topic.
Whoohoo!!! 2 stars! I think that just made my whole day
I truly feel honored and quite special.
'Tis easier to complain than to provide fixes...
Mods - feel free to delete. I'm going back into my cave now.
Frickin about time...awesome rom. sdhc support I hope? So glad you left out netframework 2.0 as I hear installing 3.5 without having 2.0 cooked in prior boosts performance by 20%.
Device just rebooted, time to test =)
Directories seem take forever to load in file explorer.
Edit: Soft-reset seemed to fix that. Now navigating through directories seems much quicker than previous rom. Overall the device seems 2x as fast as my last rom. I had like 5 programs opened and running and still navigating through the start menu and then settings/programs screen was instantaneous. Great frickin rom so far.
hi mattk_r ,

is there a way to get the kitchen files?
so i can build my own rom based on yours with the buildos tools like in the older pandora version? of course i would share my work to others

Thanks for great ROM, will try it out sometime. PIM backup hogs up cpu after restore, i usually let my phone sit for a while, and then it finishes whatever it does. I used to softreset the phone as soon as i restore, but not anymore. I think it mainly hogs the cpu after call log restore, if there is call logs of 100 or more..

Poor program memory using BEPE's ROM version 0.97 Premium GER

before i begin, i would like to know from us, how many program memory's left in our devices?
I have the last Bepe's ROM (0.97 Premium) installed, and some small programs on the intern main memory, they don't really use so much space and i don't think they are the reason of my memory lack, my program memory shows only 22,1 MB memory free, what about your own values...?
What can be the reason for having so a memory problem
I have noticed that most of the ROM developers don't include detailed information about the memory use of their ROMs.
usual values:
after a restart: 37 MB
by using TF3D: 28,86 MB
by using TF3D and some programs: 22 MB
Since you have the Diamond with 4Gb of Internal Memory, why not use it to install the programs?
The speed difference is barely noticiable and you will get more out of the machine memory.
Nevertheless make sure that you are not running some programs in the background. Try to make a soft reset and check how much memory you have immediately after the restart of the mobile. This is the maximum memory you will have.

the 2 Programs installed on the main memory are not bigger that 900 Kb, it could not be that problem how i've said it before. After 2 restarts i obtained 37 MB, but i mean is still to slow....!!!!
Any ideas, about what can i do without to reflash again my device..??

Are you running TouchFlo3D?
This is what is in Bepe's description of his Rom. As you can see without TouchFlo3D you have "only" 64Mb, since TouchFlo3D takes around 25Mb, this goes to the 37Mb you have.
Code:
# Premium Edition boot up memory
* RAM: 64.28 MB
* Storage: 115.92 MB
That is without activating TouchFLO 3D
My suggestion, try another Rom, Dutty's V1.5 is great, or check if Bepe has a more recent one.

I'm running TF3D but the memory values never arrive the 40 MB, just 37 MB by the restart, but it drops immediately to 26 MB when i scroll around the TF3D surface.
Actually I'm using BEPE's ROM because he released a GER version of the ROM, i was thinking to try with an original HTC ROM, but I'm not sure if i do it by now (reason time)
he say that , if you want to free some memory, you need to DESACTIVATE COMPLETELY TouchFlo3D ... without that, you can't have more free memory available.
hey guys...
I use BEPE's ROM version 0.97 Premium GER, too.
I've got no Problems with memory since flashing...
My Diamond runs now for a few hours, TF3D, ActiveSync and little tools are running and i received some mails and worked with it.
I've got TT7 and some little tools on "my device" installed.
After scrolling trought all Tabs of TF3D I already have...
78mb free file storage (Datenspeicher) of 122,91mb
41,84mb free ram (Programmspeicher) of 111,36mb
Everything runs fine and much better than the original old O² ROM
Jason
on swiftbl 5.0 rom I have 57meg free, ver nice, fast rom
if u have also tweaked your device that will also cost you memory data. If u tweaked the file cache and also other tweaks that are above 2 MB you have to add them also with the totaal used memory because the tweak uses the program memory so therfore always concider that in mind and also any tweak with cahe files !!

Recomendate ROM !!!

Hi !
I already try to use all ROMS wich already is newest - nice, but there is not all what i want !
I'm looking Eng ROM - fast, stable, w6.1 - without too much don't need original windows plugins - like Windows Auto Update etc.
+Nice Themes and POSSIBILITY to change BackGrounds, Themes, different clocks, HTC Home designs etc+HTC Home Customizer - most of newest roms not possible to do this or not so easy!!!
+possibility to install & remove programs wich don't need (also wich included in rom)
+advanced system options & settings (sound of system, keypad, buttons configuration, animation, startup etc.)
+support of GPS + TomTom7 (some of newest roms have problem with GPS)
Tnx in any advice !!!
I Recomend:
In my opinion the best for you is:
YuE_v10.0_ExtraClean_WWE
It has the minimum necessary files to work. Anything else you want you can install with cabs, cause it has lots of free memory.
It doesn't have most of the features you described, but it has space for you to install ONLY the ones you need.
where can i find YuE_v10.0_ExtraClean_WWE
i have the 9.1 installed now but i'm having a few problems with the phone crashing when im in a call and also selecting text by high-lighting with the stylus..
whats new in version 10???
Cheers

[CLOSED] [ROM+KITCHEN+sUC WM6.1] Dia Duit ROM v1.7.0 - based on 2.11.70.1

Dia Duit ROM v1.7.0 final is out
for keyboards installation see bottom keyboard note
for latest news/changes take a look here
DOWNLOAD :
thanks to myself for original mirror: jump
MAIN FEATURES :
Based on latest 2.11.70.1 (from Orange, removed Orange stuffs)
Diamond Manila TF3D 2.1 + new driver set from Topaz, ported some basic Leo packages, etc...
LZX compressed rom... 130Mb free main space after fresh installation
Removed the annoying Ms welcome & manual screen calibration after every upgrade/flash/hard-reset, now is pre-configured so don't take care anymore
sUC (aka suiller's UC) is included (detailed sUC review/instructions) with it of course all Dia Duit features: speed profile selection, automatic backup (favourite manila people too), gps profile selection, planned auto-reboot, ramdisk, mobile upx (upxlist.txt), personal tweaking (by reg files now) + all the "safe" battery/speed tweaks I collected in several years, 3/4 rows selection, mail + attachments & documents moved to "Internal Storage", etc... note: the rom is fully UC/UC2 compliant too
Modded smooth violet buttons in keypad, commmanager, calculator & usbtopc applications, menu enhance
Connection Setup is NOT included, you can find 3 versions in extra cab repository (at top page): 1st from 2.00 rom (China included), 2nd from 2.03 (China NOT present) & the 3rd is the Topaz porting; install one of them like a standard cab (put always in your CAB folder); if you install/uninstall separately remember to restart to see changes
Steps to proceed with this ROM installation (only 1st time) :
before flash read here carefully all news related to sUC (because is included & active)
download latest rom from one of the mirror specified at top page and look in my signature for a fast upgrade procedure
after rom installation sUC will start asking you: configure general speed & GPS profiles; remove ActiveSync time change queue (stop popup every 5 min); left/right softkey configuration; CAB & CABi + REG + EXE + CPY installation/execution (as mentioned above) + upx compression phase, then choose backup method & eventually load a restore, restore previous saved Start Menu and for finish reboot to apply changes
then you can re-organize shortcuts in your "\windows\Start Menu" directory to fit your needs, then run the script "backupStartMenu", this will make a copy of your "final" start menu directory, useful to preserve your original Start Menu structure (in this way it can be restored automatically on next flash)
the last important folder (always under "Backup and Restore" directory) is "pimbackup", under this directory will be saved automatic pim backups during night (contacts/sms/call logs/et cetera)
some notes to know :
I don't like to get out every time the stylus, in my way the phone should be easily used with just one hand, so this rom is designed, where possible, to be used just with fingers: vertical bar is fatter, icons are more spaced & system font is bigger
pimbackup is enabled to make scheduled (automatic) backups every day at 4.00AM, remember for 1st to make a restore at 1st installation (a menu will presented at 2nd boot for this)
to speed up a bit the whole system & get off ActiveSync popping up every 5 minutes answer "OK" when asking to remove ActiveSync time change queue (of course ActiveSync will work normally when connected trough usb cable) & remember also to disable automatic checks (from AS application select Menu, then Schedule & put both to Manual, close tapping X & launch recover ram script... this will close automatically AS & will clean the queue)
about upx compression only exe files coming from cab installation can be compressed, existing exe files (cooked in the rom) can't be touched
I strongly suggest to upgrade your radio version too (I'm currently using 1.13.25.24, anyway find your best), 03 & 05 are really outdated, if you don't know where find new/good/tested radios download always at CAB repository (at top page or in my signature)
DO NOT remove the (automatic created) hibernation file "SwapImgDoNotRemove" because it's a copy of your cache, NOR remove files inside Ramdisk (the original cache) & neither remove MAIL folder under "Internal Storage\Backup and Restore" because from V05 mails are stored there
CAB installation is made seeking alphabetic sort, so keep it in mind when installing cabs that need a specific sequence
keep in mind that many cabs to work properly need to be installed into main memory (so not CABi)
CABi installation isn't perfect & doesn't work with languages different from ENG/USA, it work at 100% with simple cabs such as games, sometimes it fails on complex cab (license accept & various boring confirmation... such as iGO)
to restore the boot image (splash) to the original one (all black) simply download & install this package
special keyboard note: there is ONLY ms-keyboard as default, this because any keyboard set takes a lot of memory & registry becomes fatter, so install just the one you prefer (look always at repository below or in my signature)... so for example you can choose between FingerKeybd (very nice, download from XDA & here a simple guide to restore automatically after every flash) or Rhodium_EzInput (add Rhodium_EzEngine to have also T9 support... this T9 library works also with FingerKeybd) & above all remember that must installed during 1st setup, so don't install manually but copy your cabs in the CAB folder
WHY ALL THIS PROCEDURE?? in few words... I was very tired to re-install everything from scratch after a new installation/flash... so I thought about an easy way to have a fast & real "restore" after every flash
bye,
davide
ps: dia duit in gaelic means "good day"
Hm, this looks very interesting !
Looking forward to test your ROM !
it does look intresting. 1.96, optimized png and wav, and new drivers is what im looking forward to. TF3D version sticks out though, 1.2.345 is current, i thought maybe a newer version whould be included.
On your site : ROM_Diat_Duit_v01.diamimg.nbh - size: 82Mb
It's for test and it's : V1.96.710 ??
Thx for you futur rom ;-)
Seems interesting, but i didn't understand a thing:i can install my cabs in the "old way" too?
I explain:i usually flash the rom and then install all programs...can i do this with your rom or not?

no no that version isn't "newer"... that version is different because isn't native for diamond but it was adapted (from raphael if I remember well) but has some (small) bugs, the last one for diamond is 1.1.34575..., anyway there is no need to use the adapted one ver 1.2 because benchmarks speak clearly, there aren't significant speed improvements

well, opera wasn't included for 2 reasons, the 1st one because many don't like it, they prefer skyfire for example, the 2nd because the version included in this original rom was a bit outdated, so you can download from here the latest beta version of Opera mobile, I'm using it from 2 days and it works very well

Hi,
just flashed your rom.

there's a bug in the phone settings from comm manager.
i cannot close the settings the normal way.
so all settings beside services cannot be saved.

Network Adapters
HI,
what is a "Microsoft null Ethernet Miniport Driver"?
The word "null" sound a bit strange..
what do you mean for "close in the normal way" ?
thank you,
davide
Hello,
I'vejust installed it and everything is working fine... And quick!
Gratulations for your work!
I've noticed that the icons from some programs are being showed more then once.
I'll continue testing it and give you more feedback.
it's a virtual driver, it can be used by the system for network emulations, like for ex vpn
