MDA Vario II OR MDA Compact 3 - P3300, MDA Compact III General

Ok , the only pda phone i had was a blue angel , now im after one of the above but cant make my mind up.
is the vario II big to hold (also compared to blue angel) and is the Compact worth paying a bit more for the GPS or should i get the vario II with a BT Mouse??
What are your thoughts on both models
Cheers
Roy

My first thought is - shame you're stuck on T-Mobile.
The Vario II is a little thick compared to the latest phones but is much more pocket (and ear) friendly than the Angel. It's the one to go for if you need a keyboard, and has the advantage of 3G, WiFi and a fast CPU.
The Compact III has the advantage of built-in GPS, is really light and slim, and has better battery life. The downside is no 3G, no WiFi (unlike the non- T-Mobile variants), no keyboard, and a slower CPU.
I find built in GPS really handy - there are lots of applications that work with it now (MS Live Search, Google Maps, Yahoo Go etc) which can be useful even when you're not in the car. Chances are, when you're lost on foot, or need to look up the nearest Thai restaurant, will be the one time you've forgotten the Bluetooth GPS or to charge it...
If you weren't stuck with T-Mobile, the perfect choice would be the HTC Trinity / P3600 / Orange M700. No keyboard, but nice and slim, has the power of the Vario II, and GPS and Wifi too.
Or save up for the Vario III, which gives you all the lot...

The Trinity has build in GPS?

Thanks for the responces , I went and got a SPV M3100 in the end with GPS Mouse...
I am not stuck to T-Mobile but am stuck on my budget , and the Compact III's are ALOT cheaper used as of course there is no WIFI.
And the Vario III , Maybe i can afford one in a year or so

Can someone tell me if the T-Mobile MDA Compact III is wi-fi.
I notice from other forums which state that this version is not wi-fi enabled
Shouldn't be too difficult to edit the registry settings.
Buzz, Maimach We need you, Help !!!
Doesn't look like it, it isn't mentioned in the manual.

The HTC p3300 has Wi-Fi standard onboard. Local telecom providers however, are able to choose if they want features like Wi-Fi enabled or disabled. T-mobile Germany decided to sell the MDA Compact III with WiFi disabled (maybe to boost the GPRS usage?). T-mobile The Netherlands decided to let the Wi-Fi feature enabled.
I have a dutch T-mobile MDA Compact III, Model nr. ARTE110, that has WiFi enabled. Bought it btw for EUR 209,- + 15,75 monthly fee, which makes EUR 398,- in total .
Maybe the WiFi feature can be enabled/disabled by tweaking the registry or using another ROM?
And does anyone have suggestions how to unlock it?
hi rjs_artemis,
can you give a link to a website where you bought it? is this offer also available for non netherlands residents? I am living in Belgium so that I might go to Maastricht and check that wisely

I bought it at the T-mobile Online Shop, see here
other option is http://www.smartphonestunts.nl/index.php?tid=181
And yes it has a Dutch WM5 and it is locked.
As mentionned on the following link https://www.t-mobile.nl/persoonlijk...ab=Relax&ratePlanId=269&contractPeriodId=1030
the price of the phone shall be 239.95€ with a 15.75€ flex t-mobile abonnement and not 209,- like you mentionned. Therefore the total price reaches 428.95€ and not 398,-, reason why I asked you where you bought it.
Anyway price is still attractive but if you tell me the device is locked on t-mob neth, it doesn't worth one penny for my own.
Regards
btw for the old fellahs in here, do you know if pdaphones might be phisically unlocked like mobiles? I think it could be done but need confo
would be a nice opportunity then
T-Mobile MDA III
I had a reply from T-Mobile UK yesterday saying the UK release will not have Wifi.
However I read that the Wifi is all on board on the main Chip
Texas Instruments OMAP 850
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=cpu&id=a850
If thats the case then would another ROM not re-enable it?
Or do you recon it's a custom Hardware?
I'd like to stay with T-Mobile for Web'n'Walk but If i cant have the Wifi I'll go elsewhere
O2 I think is due to release the Orbit 27th Nov.
Might wait for that as I assume the package will be better that the ones Expansys is offering on O2 or vodafone with an HTC branded unit.

We are both right. T-mobile raised their prices for the MDA Compact III at the Online Shop. I ordered it last friday (03-11) for 209,-. On tuesday they raised prices with 30,95, so now it's 239,95 with a 15,75 contract.
Unlocking will be possible very soon. For example see this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-282156.html
aye sounds promising
I'll wait before buying until I have some confo about that..
still the question of keef related to the wifi is really interesting... if any has made some tests on an uk or dutch t-mobile version..
T-Mobile Mda Compact 3
Ref Wi-Fi embedded in chip !!
Hi Guys
I have tried to perform a rom update on my Mda Compact 3 using the HTC P3300 latest rom but the compact was having none of it.
It appears to 'drop out' after 3 per cent stating 'incorrect device'.
This is not the usual "incorrect vendor id" so I guess updating with a wi-fi enabled rom is not possible
Why have T-Mobile skimped on this essential feature is beyond me !!!

Quote from that link
"All-rounder
The MDA Compact III is a fantastic all-rounder. It’s a dedicated navigation PDA with GPS and TomTom Navigator 6 software preinstalled. It runs on the powerful Windows 5.0 operating system. The Compact III is very user friendly as it has a mouse. Control the cursor with the miniature trackball and use its silver dial as a scroll wheel. Keeping up with your emails is simple and you can surf the internet with web‘n’walk. It has128 MB of internal memory and a microSD card slot for expansion, plus a two mega-pixel digital camera with zoom, flash LED and video capture, an MP3 player, FM radio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB cable connectivity."

T-mobile Compact III WiFi

Sorry, maybe I am just stupid ... but ... there is no Wifi Hardware, or its just disabled?
Thank You...
After hoping and researching for a long time, a lot of people agreed, that the WiFi Hardware is not included in the device, at least noone managed to switch something on and get WiFi to work. They tried all WWE ROMs that come with WiFi Enabled, so it is not a Software thing
Realy BAD news But how its possible? I mean, is it not a same device with different names? I really dissopointed about it ...
The MDA III is the HTC Hero, which does not come with Wi-Fi hardware.
dutch mda compact III
actually the dutch mda compact III does have wifi
the sticker behind the battery also states that it is a Artemis.

The subject is however the MDA Compact III... that is not the same as the MDA III. My MDA Compact III does have wifi because I live in the Netherlands. Other countries may differ.
One colleague on polish forum pdaclub.pl told to HTC.
HTC said, thad they are making only one hardware for all recipients.
Ogre2000

Artemis - HTC P3300 - T-Mobile MDA compact III - WLan Upgrade ?

Can I upgrade my T-Mobile MDA compact III to the WLan Version?
Thanks for your help!
why you dont use "search"?
Well this upgrade is possible, yes.
1. Send your MDA Compact III back to T-Mobile and ask for your money
2. Buy an XDA-Orbit or original HTC P3300
3. Done, enjoy WLAN
Sorry for sarcasm, but this has been discussed to the max, there is no way of getting WLAN to work on a MDA C III by any Software "Tricks".
This device is simply not equipped with propper Hardware.
...
Yes, I absolutely agree with Samson711. Still drag up this useless theme. There is lot of about MDACIII and WLAN and it's not definitely possible.
mobile2007 - If I am not mistaken, the German version does not come with WLAN, but other versions (Dutch, UK, etc...) may come with it.

I have the MDA III on T-mobile UK, it does not have wifi. I was offered the MDA Mail (HTC Excalibur) and once again T-mobile sell the device with wifi removed !!
I think only T-Mobile Netherlands sell their MDA Compact III With WIFI, therefor its an Artemis, whereas T-Mobile UK and Germany sells HTC Hero

wifi on mda compact III
i am from holland and i got wifi on it so what is the problem?

Are T-Mobile lying to me?

I am about to purchase the XDA Orbit or Orange M700 or the T-Mobile MDA Compact iii. I am trying to get the best deal...Is there anyway to switch on the MDA'S WLAN?
Orange- Phone FREE. £35/[email protected] months. 200 Mins & 300 txts PLUS unlimited weekend texts. No satnav software and the WLAN is there!!
02- (Who I am with now tried to better orange's offer) Phone FREE. £30/[email protected] 18 months!! 400 mins & 750 texta. No satnav software and the wireless lans there.
T-Mobile - (They know both Orange's & 02's offer but didnt make an offer) Web and walk flext. £37.50/[email protected] 18 months (With the option to cancel the web and walk at anytime as well as downgrade to a cheaper contract after 6 months) £180 allowence on my account per a month, plus 1GB of internet access (They say unlimited but thats a lie due to fair use policy etc etc) No satnav software or Wireless Lan (The guy said a firmware update is comming which will switch it on!??)
HELP ME PLEASSEE!
Why you're boring us with questions to WLAN on MDAcIII?
There are thousends and thousands of threads concerning this question.
For what its worth, from a MDA III owner go with the XDA Orbit.
The spv m700 is HTC Trinity. Orange sell the Artemis as spv m650 but is it available in the UK?
As for the wifi on the MDA III.....do not think it will take a simple update to switch it on. I believe the hardware is simply not there to begin with. Why would T-mobile say an update is coming which will activate the wifi ?! Looks like they are offering flext 35 + web n walk. Personally, hate to be locked in an 18 month contract with any provider. I am on flext 35 with a 12 month plan, my monthly allowance is only £120.
The lack of wifi is not too bad if you have web n walk. Yes there is a fair usage policy, it is still best gprs tariff in the UK. They don't like you using msn, skype etc.
You will have it all with the Orbit. Gps, Wifi, bluetooth and phone!
The T-Mobile devise does not contain the WiFi hardware so if T-Mobile told you a firmware update will switch it on he is lying - there is NOTHING THERE to be switched on!
I have the T-Mob unit and with the Web-n-Walk I can use the internet without a problem, you would have to be online nearly 24/7 to use up your 1GB per month (and there is another tarrif for 3GB per month IIRC).
I also have the HTC P3300 Artemis which does have WiFi, but unless the connection is free I tend to use the T-Mob unit. If WiFi is so important to you get the O2 Orbit or buy a P3300 unit, they are available from some suppliers tied to contracts which is a cheaper way to purchase it.
For me the clincher for the HTC P3300 Artemis was the abscence of the crappy O2 Active Interface software that can mess up otherwise perfectly usable good hardware, the HTC unit is to all intents and purposes the same as the Orbit, minus the XDA logo and its a nicer colour IMHO - Mike
You can always get the HTC P3300 and then go with any provider you want so you are not stuck with their built in bs.
One thing to watch out for is the possible difference in screens between the orange and o2 versions? I had the Orange M600 and was very happy with it unitl I put it beside an iMate Jamin - the Jamin's screen was much whiter and brighter even at lower backlight settings.
I now have the Orbit and the screen is also very bright white. However, I have not compared it to the Orange version but it may be worth doing so...
I don't regret the MDA CIII one bit, my previous Universal had wi-fi and in my usage habits, I never got to turn it on once, I wasn't hunting out hotspots, I wanted data on demand, and via O2 that was quite pricey.
So T-Mobile does not have wi-fi on their Artemis based device, instead they have GPRS bundles that can't even be closely matched by the other networks.
When making the choice, you need to ask yourself how you will use it. Sure if most of your data use is around Wi-Fi hotspots, then the MDA compact III is not for you, but if like me and you need data in a clients house, at a meeting or in the middle of a field then Web and Walk is your friend.
If only it was at 3.5g speeds!!!
All I wanted was a T-Mobile sim for cheaper GPRS when I switched provider (O2 really need to sort out their prices). In the shop I was offered the C-III for free so I took it!
Put the T-Mob sim in the Universal and enjoy the 3G speed (if you still have the device) - it simply flys along well worth trying, but my Uni is a brick in comparison to the Artemis devices - Mike

differences between O2 orbit and T-Mobile Compact III

Hello,
i was contemplating buying an artemis.
i was wondering what the difference between the T-Mobile MDA Compact III and the O2 XDA Orbit is?
i hav read that t-mobile does not support wifi on its model, in addition to that, are there any other differences.
i read that there is an SD card issue with the O2 orbit, i guess that applies to the compact III too?
any idea when WM6 for artemis will be out, will t-mobile,o2 provide it as a flash update? or will we have to get it from HTC.
i saw WM6 for hermes on this site, i guess that cant be used on the artemis?
Apart from the T-Mobile not having the WiFi hardware within the unit the other differences are minimal, the O2 offering has a darker coloured outer shell and has more rounded corners - otherwise its the same. To be honest I do not miss the WiFi on the T-Mobile unit due to the GPRS internet access with the web-n-walk package.
I have had no issues mith scrambled memory cards on either my HTC P3300 or T-Mobile unit, so I cannot comment on this.
Don't ever try putting any ROM on a device that it wasn't intended for, if you do this your nice new phone will turn instantly into a very costly wedge to keep your door open - a brick - Wait unit the official ROM becomes available before trying WM6 on the unit - Mike
thanks for the reply,
so there is no EDGE or 3G on the Cmpact III
you think there is going to be an official WM6 from t-mobile?
Edge Yes, 3G no, WM6 from T-Mobile who knows - it might happen but don't hold your breath - Mike
thanks for the response dude
seen screen shots of WM6, that would be real cool.
I use WM6 on the Exec and the Mini-S (thanks to this forum), its great but not that different to be honest compared to WM2005, when/ if WM6 becomes available I will switch the newer units to the newer OS but I certainly won't loose sleep over the issue - Mike

Here in the Netherlands WM6 for T-Mobile users will be availible at the end of july.
Btw, the Dutch version of the MDA Compact III does have Wifi. Guess we Dutch are just lucky.
Check the serveral Topics about WM& on this Forum, different Carriers have announced the possibility of them publishing official ROM Upgrades to WM6, including t-mobile and O2.
thanks for the replies dudes
