Gmail and IE - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

Very frustrating, but depending on the ROM I'm running Gmail will either have the option (at the bottom of the page) to switch from mobile.gmail.com to the full HTML version. The full version will allow me to download files, the mobile is crippled...
Any ideas? Not sure if it has to do with what version of IE my device is broadcasting but it is IE6 and mobile IE 7

What about downloading the Gmail midlet?

true... is there a work around? nope.. not the midlet... if we keep that option aside, is there a workaround?

u can also do pop3. bypassing all that jazz.

i don't have any link or resource you will have to search for yourself but i read somewhere that you have to download a registry editor for your mobile 5 / 6, then you have to edit some specific line of your pocket ie, after that none of the websites including google will recognize you as a mobile device which means you will be able to use the full versions and the html versions... instead of wap etc.

Looked thru the wiki and am not seeing the option I need. Any help?
I get a large volume of emails that I don't need to see immediately and don't want to be notified immediately, that's why I'm holding off the POP option.

cant log in to facebook

hey, for some reason i cant log in to facebook using pocket IE. any ideas why? is there some other browser i can use that would work? if so, how do i get it? thanks
omar
I assume you mean the mobile version of it. It used to work. No idea why it stopped. I just go to the standard version now. PITA. Maybe the carrier?

Nope, its Internet Explorer. Bookmark this link and you should be good to go...
http://www.facebook.com/login.php
If that does not work. Go on your PC and login. Use the sub-link that is placed before facebook.com and replace the www above with it.

U can also clear ur history and temporary internet files. And make sure u get the security warning. Once u get it, ur good to go. At first i thought it was Gmail but it seems its a IE thing.
edit: It is a gmail thing. At least for me. Scroll to bottom and click "view in HTML" and u'll get security warning.
loggin into facebook is the easy part, but can you post on walls? I've had no luck doing that
The mobile version of the site is far better.
http://m.facebook.com
Mobile Facebook is great. I just got on it today because they recently did a redesign which is making it a pain to view in Pocket IE.
I also have problems logging into m.facebook.com but I usually get to the login screen and then use the link at the bottom of the page to do a standard login. The only thing that annoys me is that if I use my P990i instead I stay permanantly logged in on it, whereas my MDA Mail (UK Spec) keeps on logging me out grrr.
If you're having trouble getting the login at m.facebook.com to work, try this link instead:
http://m.facebook.com/login.php?http&next=http://m.facebook.com/home.php
Bookmark that, and you'll be good to go. It basically forces you to the HTML login page instead of the WAP login, but keeps you on the mobile interface to save data.

Phone attempting to access net several times per hour

I've just switched network providers and haven't set up the data connection yet, but I've noticed that the phone has been repeatedly trying to access GPRS all day - about 15-20 times between 10am and 4:30pm.
I use SPB Mobile Shell 3, and have the weather app set to update manually. I also have Outlook set to send/receive manually, so I can't work out which application is trying to access the net. Does anyone know how I can find out, before I clock up a huge data bill?
What about the auto web page loading thingy? Have you set that up???
No - I've never enabled it.
I've just installed SPB Wireless Monitor and the two processes that seem to be doing it are system.exe and services.exe. These both sound like naive WM processes, so don't really give me a clue what's going on.
I read in another post that Google Maps/Latitude may connect to the internet regularly, so I disabled that feature but there's still something connecting on a regular basis.
???
The only other thing I am aware it could be is the Manila Facebook updater that's built into the contacts part of TF3D2. Check that out:
People->All People->3rd Tab(person with a clock)->Menu->Data connection setting

I have TF3D2 disabled as I use SPB Mobile Shell. Hence I'm not even able to access the TF3D menu. Is there any way of checking this without removing SPB Mobile Shell?
Does anyone know of a program which will selectively allow internet access to specified applications only?
You could try this one: NO DATA app
Thanks - I already run NoData, but I'd like something which explicitly allows net access to some apps but not to others. That way I won't have to remember to switch GPRS on every time I want to browse, and off when I'm finished.
I finally worked out which app was accessing the net - it was the Funambol client. The newer version is set to "Push" updates by default, rather than sync manually. Now I can finally leave my 3G access enabled without fear of clocking up unexpected charges....

Hello, what is Funambol? I have the same problem (connecting to GPRS network frequently), but I didnt find such application. Thank you.
It's a SyncML client - allows synchronisation of my calendar, contacts etc with my Google calendar/Gmail contacts
Thanks for the quick reply. Do you or anybody else have any idea which application is still connection to the net? I'm using neither Opera nor TF.

[Q] Internet ????

These are most likely stupid questions for you experts, but it is driving me crazy. I am using the stock AT&T rom that came with the phone.
1) What do I use WiFi or AT&T? I also have a wireless modem setup at my office and at home. Can I connect to these? What is "Mobile Web" for?
2) How do I know what browser I am connecting to? I have Opera and Internet Explorer. Most of the time Opera does not every connect. I have even downloaded Opera 10, but I cannot find it.
1. If both are present, use whatever you want. WiFi can sometimes be faster, so if its available you may prefer WiFi when its available. But ATT's internet will work almost everywhere that has a cell phone signal.
2. I think "Mobile Web" is what the browser shortcut on the HTC interface is named on the stock ATT ROM, if I remember correctly (I'm not running stock on mine, its just called "Internet" on mine). Its just a shortcut to the browser. If you use this tab, it automatically opens to Opera.
The icon for Opera 10 should be in root directory of the Start Menu. If not, use the File Explorer (Start>Tool) and browse for "Opera10.lnk" to find where it was installed to.
PAP or CHAP Authentication?
What is this and what should my setting be? It is in the Advanced Network in the Connections Folder. I am trying to figure out why my Microsoft Mail will not come in automatically anymore. I have been playing around with my phone a lot and may have changed something that I cannot figure out what it was.
Another question is the Microsoft Direct Push - should this be on or off?

I have Opera 9, but have not found anything for Opera 10.
Did you actually install Opera 10, or just download it (somewhat common error)? It will download as a .cab file, which you then have to unpack and install by clicking on it.
If it was installed, it would show up in Remove Programs. Go to Start>Settings>System>Remove Programs, and see if Opera 10 is there.

It should be PAP.
Try not to mess around with too many things, if you don't know what they do (such as seeing the tweak on these forums). You can mess things up pretty badly. Or at least keep track of what the default option was before you change it, so you can change it back. Although if all else fails, you can hard reset (Start>Settings>System>Empty Storage). But you will lose all your data and return the phone to its factory settings.
If you want your email automatically pushed from a MS Exchange server (such as work email) when Direct Push should be on. Where do you see the setting for this?

It is here.
Start>Settings>Connections>Wireless Manager
Ah, yes. That one.
I think that will cause the phone to push MS Exchange emails to your phone whenever they arrive, and cause shortened battery life. Better to just schedule ActiveSync to download your emails periodically (unless you are really that dependent on getting your email instantly). In which case, you can turn this option "off". Or if you don't use any MS Exchange services at all, you can also turn it off.

This is what I had to pay extra for due to having to get the e-mails (for work) when they come in if I am not in my office. The company is paying the bill.

[Q] Select text issues in 4.0.4, anyone confirm?

HI all,
I use m.facebook.com quite a bit instead of the app. The reason being that I can select text from the mobile site and paste into google translate app. Since the update I can no longer select text from this mobile site? not sure what has happened.
Can anyone confirm that they cannot select text on this site in the browser. It behaves strangely. Thanks
I cannot.
I am on 4.0.4 and I can confirm that I can select text within m.facebook.com using the stock browser. Make sure you are not clicking on any links, and instead just holding down on regular text.

Tried this again and again. Just doesn't work on FB webpage. Used to be able to select and copy someones status update etc. Are you sure you are not on the regular desktop site? This only affects m.facebook.com.
The long hold and select text works fine on other webpages so I think its some change to the code on FB mobile.

I have found that I cannot in the news feed, but if I click on "comment" then I can select the post. Sometimes it doesn't work right. In Chrome, I cannot select anything on Facebook. I use Friendacaster when I need to select text, but prefer using mobile facebook for everything else.
Thanks for confirming that. Its quite annoying as I use the inbuilt browser for all my surfing on the nexus. The facebook mobile site seems to be rendering differently than before and preventing text selection. If I force the page to render in desktop mode there is no issue with text selection. Wondering is there a workaround to select text in mobile site.

Chrome's Open Tab Sync not working

I've tried everything that I can think of, but for the life of me I can't find a way to get the sync my open tabs on my pc with my dinc feature to work. I've tried all the little tricks like signing out and then signing back in on my pc, toggling sync open tabs, etc. Has anyone else been able to get this feature to work on their dinc? I've also tried this on all of the ICS roms and it doesn't work in any of them.
Anyone? Lol

Well it's a built in feature in the Chrome phone app. And yes, Chrome on your pc is needed as well. Basically, when enabled from the pc version, you can see what tabs you have open on your pc from your phone. Simply open Chrome and press the folder icon with the up and down arrows in it

Thanks, mabey if i get some time tomorrow i will check it out and see if i can get it to work for me.
It works for me and i've used it before.
1) Make sure your are signed into the same google account on both computer and phone
2) Visit about:flags or chrome://flags/ on your desktop google chrome browser and ensure the "Enable syncing open tabs" Is enabled/not disabled
3) If you've enabled what I said in #2 or if it was already enabled, visit chrome://sessions/ and see if you can see your device.
4) make sure you have the latest chrome for desktop. I'm currently on 20.0.1132.47 beta however I sometimes switch to the dev or canary version, and it works on those too.
If none of the above work, idk what you are doing wrong :/
Well, I tried everything you suggested but to no avail. I noticed when I went to chrome://sessions/ that my device only synced once about a week ago but it only synced the page that I was viewing on my phone (as opposed to the tabs that I was viewing on my pc). Maybe it's just not meant to be
Hmm. To clarify:
You have tabs opened on Google Chrome Desktop, that you are attempting to view on your phone?
Yup

okay for some reason i was thinking of the other way around (view chrome on mobile tabs on desktop chrome) I will check in a little and see if it still works the issue you're having. Last I checked it did work tho
Solution
Here's the solution that will fix your problem.
Follow the instructions below, do not skip any steps.
Desktop Chrome Settings
1. Go to Settings
2. Go to Advanced Sync Settings
3. Choose either Sync Everything or ensure Open Tabs is ticked
Android Settings
1. Go to your System Settings
2. Under Accounts, go to Google
3. Select your Google Account email address
4. Ensure Chrome is ticked
Android Chrome Settings
1. Go to Settings
2. Under Basics, click on your Google Account email address
3. Tick Chrome to Mobile
4. Click on Sync
5. Choose either Sync Everything or ensure Open Tabs is ticked
Now, the tabs you open in your desktop will be available on your Android, under the Synced Tab (at the bottom, next to the Favourites (star) tab).
The tabs you open in your Android will also be available on your desktop, under Menu -> Recent Tabs.

For a slightly inconvenient workaround, if chrome open tabs aren't working, the shared device history still does. I've been going into the history to find what tabs I need.
