Stop Returning to Today Screen? - P3300, MDA Compact III General

Is there a setting that prevents my device always returning to the Today screen whenever I turn it back on? (I don't mean after it's been totally off, just after the display's been off). I'm sure with previous smartphones I've had it's just stayed at whatever program you were running (e.g. Messages, Contacts etc) unless you actually set an option to always return on the Today screen, or the "Today Screen Timeout" had been reached.
What happens now is the display comes back on with whatever it was showing before, but almost immediately it then blanks and the Today screen is painted, plug-in by plug-in. Even if I switched off on the Today screen, when I turn back on it still blanks and re-paints.

Have you got batterystatus installed? I think there's a setting in that that will force the pda to return to the today screen when you turn it on.

No, not installed.
My research since posting this suggests that it is linked to the security policy forced on me by my Exchange Server that forces me to have a password set. Although I only get prompted for a password when the device is turned back on from being "properly" off, or if I've not used it for 24hrs, I've read that having a password set up causes the device to always revert to the Today screen.
I'm about to try a hack called zenyee.com_stay_unlock that supposedly overcomes the enforced policy.
Just doing a SPB backup first...

Job's a good'un!

Nicely.

[Q] Problem with Screen remaining unlocked

This problem is with the screen and phone not going to sleep mode after an event that brings it out of sleep.
After i lock the screen manually by pressing the button on the top, the phone would wake up briefly due to an event like a calendar reminder, text, phone etc.
So after certain duration of inactivity, it should go back into the sleep mode automatically. Right, it used to, but not anymore. It just stopped. I have checked the Advanced settings under the Battery option but no good.
Although after say 30 seconds (as per my setting) the screen fades to low light to conserve battery, but remains active.
As a result i have inadvertently pocket dialed quite a many and it's beginning to be a privacy concern and a pain in the butt for me and others. Not to mention the charges from the international number my phone self-dialed.
I'm using a TP-2 Rhodium OS 6.1.
As if the battery didn't suck enough, I needed this !!!
Any tips would be appreciated.
If the phone "used to" go to sleep but doesn't anymore, it sounds like a recently installed program or process is running in the background forcing it to stay on.
Does the phone refuse to go to sleep only after being woken up by an event?
...or does it not go to sleep on its own at all anymore?
Isn't pressing that button on the top just closing the screen?, unless you set it as the lock as well
I should have mentioned - the phone will go back to sleep mode if I manually operate the button on the top. Just that it won't go to sleep on its own anymore.
You may be right user602, about the recently installed apps, but is there any way to narrow down on the culprit instead of uninstalling all of them?

Go back and check the power settings again; make sure they are set to have the screen turn off. Change the settings to some other value and see if that helps. Maybe something just messed around with your registry entries.
If not, you will need to uninstall those programs, in reverse order, until the device works.
I'd start by changing the power settings as suggested by stevedebi above.
If that doesn't help, and you want to avoid uninstalling a bunch of stuff, you can look at what's running using Task Manager:
-Begin by stopping running programs one at a time, and seeing if the device will sleep.
-If that doesn't help, stop processes one at a time, and again see if the device will sleep (watch out for critical system processes, though).
...or if you're lucky, you may find something in the \windows\startup folder, such as a program you were not aware is starting on boot.
Of course, this all ends with uninstalling programs one at a time if none of the above suggestions work.

------- "I'd start by changing the power settings as suggested by stevedebi above."
I can swear i tried this before and it didn't work. Changed it one last time before doing anything else,... and voila !!!
Thanks 602 & stevedebi
That was easy!
I'm glad the simplest solution worked for you.
...That's usually not my luck!

normal Lock Screen vs Locked Lock Screen behavior & trigger

I just want to get this straight because I actually thought the encryption settings on the phone were leading to the wonky behavior I noticed about the standard swipe away lock screen and a protected (PIN or whatever) lock screen... that led me to waste hours while the phone encrypted & then eventually screwed up during the decryption of my memory card.
Basically, the standard unprotected lock screen can just be wiped away - everyone knows that. But on every Android device I've owned up to this one (Hero, EVO, Nexus S, Photon, Evo 3D) when you set up a password lock you can set how long a time period passes before that actually kicks in. It seemed like this phone was no different, at first. I mean, there's a timer setting under the password lock options.
However, what I've been able to figure out is (and mentioned in another thread) the moment you set a password protected lock screen it replaces the standard swipe away lock screen all together. For reference, on other phones even if the password lock is triggered, when you turn on the phone the first thing you see is your standard lock screen and whatever information you have there - if you choose to swipe that away the lock screen you actually have to unlock is there. One of the reasons I don't like the implementation on this GS2 is because I actually like the large easy-to-glance clock and information on the lock screen (and missed call, msgs updates, etc). However, that's besides the point, which is that there's a setting for the password lock Timeout - which is screwy because it only takes effect if your screen turns itself off (on the timer set in the normal display screen timeout settings). If you turn the phone off yourself, the password protected lock screen is activated immediately.
I've found that having a 1-2 minute screen timeout is perfect because it lets me either be distracted for a bit while I do stuff on the phone (watch tv?) or try to show someone something on the phone without having to worry about it turning off on them. Normally it's not a problem because I instinctively turn off the screen myself when I'm done using it. In the few days I've had this phone I don't WANT to turn it off because I know I'll have to unlock it again. I usually love the security of a password lock but this seems inconvenient and, well, stupid.
So no password lock = lockscreen with useful information at a glance.
Set up a password lock = ^^ useful screen gone.
Password lock timeout only applies to the screen auto-shutoff = if you manually shut off your screen you HAVE to unlock it even if you turn it on a moment later.
I haven't really seen anyone say anything about this and I guess I'm a bit surprised by that. Again, one of the first things I did when I got the phone was transfer a larger capacity memory card to it that had a number or picture albums and movie transfers to it - then during the time I set up the phone I chose to set up a password lock, then encrypt it (took about 5 or 6 hours!). Since I did these things back to back I thought the encryption was the reason I had to unlock the phone almost every single time I turned it back on. It was only after I was playing with the settings (and eventually had to hard reset when the decryption process screwed up) that I see it didn't really have to do much with that at all. Well, aside from the fact that encryption requires a password lock, which leads to this whole thing. So anyway, yeah - that's like one of my only complaints about an otherwise killer device.
I'm gonna look into the framework when I get home. I remember seeing a bunch of lockscreen settings and triggers. Maybe its just a matter of changing a "true" to a "false"

Delayed screen lock

Hey,
Does anyone else have problems with the delayed lock screen feature?
Settings -> Security -> Automatically Lock
(You need to have a pattern or pin unlock for the option to show up)
In there are delay settings, so the lock only activates after a set period of time. No matter what delay I pick, the screen lock activates instantly as soon as the screen turns off.
I was wondering if this happened for anyone else, before I post an issue with Google.
The weird thing is I'm sure it worked at one point, but I've tried a factory reset and it still doesn't work with a fresh handset.
Cheers
Do you use a (corporate) exchange account on your phone? I think I read somewhere that Exchange security settings can override the delay and force the phone to lock instantaneous.

I do yeah, but I tried with a clean factory reset and it still happens
I don't know exactly how Exchange accounts work - If my device ID was registered with the Exchange server, would it still enforce the security settings even though the email account is not on the phone any more? (i.e. a factory reset).

I have set a 5 minute delay on the lock and it has been working perfectly.
I cannot think of a reason why you are not able to apart from your Exchange set up.
I don't use Exchange and also have this issue... no matter what I set the delay at, it always locks.
I removed the Exchange account from my phone, and got the server admin to delete my device ID from the system - but it still locks instantly when the screen goes off, so it doesn't look like that's the problem.
How odd...
Anyone have any more info on this? It's pretty irritating and don't want to do a factory rest if I can avoid it!

Did you remove the device administrator you create (at least in 2.x) when you accept the Exchange security policies? Might still be there I guess.
I think the timer only kicks in when the screen turns off by itself not when you hit the lock button. Try letting the screen goto sleep and see if the delay works.

Oh yeah
Seems slightly odd behaviour - I'm used to the CM7 way where it would delay the lock whether you turned the screen off manually or not.

Oh... yeah, that worked! As Shodney said, seems strange as I come from a ROM (Android Revolution HD) that doesn't care if the screen times out or if you press power - it starts the timer from then.
To be honest I prefer the "old" behaviour - I like having a long "awake" time on my screen so it doesn't go off while I'm reading a web page or whatever and to turn it off manually to save battery. But I don't like it locking straight away! Guess I just have to live with it for now. Thanks for the answer anyway.
I find it weird too. The sgs2 was the same way. There is a great app called delaylock (https://market.android.com/details?id=de.j4velin.delayedlock2&hl=en) on the market that will make the lock work the as cm7 not sure it works on ics yet, I plan on trying it when my phone gets here Friday.
Glad I could clear all the confusion on this setting.

Strange flashing of screen

Well, I thought I had a fault-free HOX. I received it on Saturday and haven't really used it much because I'm waiting for screen protector and case to be delivered.
I left the phone at home today (on standby) while I went to work. I came back and as I swiped the screen lock off the screen started flashing in multi-colours whenever I touched the screen.
If I didn't touch the screen, it was fine, and soon as I touched the screen it would start flashing in different colours again.
I rebooted the phone, and same problem. I rebooted again, and the problem was gone. I haven't been able to get the problem to reoccur.
Should I return the phone for a replacement, which may or may not have additional problems, or considering the fact the problem hasn't reoccurred, do I just keep the phone?
My Guess was the 'Show Screen Updates' was Enable.
Settings >> Developer Options >> Make sure you unchecked all under 'user interface'.
You got it in one, thanks ;-)
I can replicate the effect by enabling 'Show Screen Updates'.
I think my partner must have been playing with my phone while I was out!
What is this option for?
It happens to me all the time. It's probably because you have a lot of hand sweat and when you touch the screen your sweat gets on it. Just wipe it off with your shirt or something.
Or it could just be that the "show screen updates" option is enabled lol

HELP! In case of emergency

Because of health issues I have an app on my phone that first responders such as paramedics can use to see my medical history, medication, allergies etc., and lets me easily call emergency numbers if I am in a condition to do so. This app is from the play store and is one of the many just called ICE. Several of these apps have an associated widget that they can place on the lock screen, that can be used immediately, even if a password is set there.
The problem I have, is that if I set a password or fingerprint in the phone security settings, it prevents a first responder from seeing the lock screen and widget, and retrieving the information. Is there any way of getting the widget onto the password screen? I realise I could stop setting a password on the phone in security settings. I don't like having a password on the lock screen, because every single time the the screen is woken up, a password has to be entered.
I would be grateful if anyone is able to give me ideas of a work-around.

It is not the lock screen that I need to place a widget on. Many of the ICE apps from Play Store will already do this. But if one sets a password there, then it needs to be used every time the screen is woken up, which is a pain. Ideally I would like to be able to set the system password from the settings menu, and for a paramedic still be able to access the widget without entering a password. - Mike

When woken up, it wont directly ask for password, unless you set "directly show PIN" enabled, or when it trigger by finger. If its woken up using button, it will simply show lockscreen
i think you should take a screenshot of the condition you expect (turn off your pass first, maybe) to give us better idea regarding the situation.
The condition I need is that a widget should be available to allow a paramedic or doctor acess to my medical conditions etc, even when the phone is protected by a pasword. Maybe this is impossible and I shall just have to leave my phone unprotected by a password.
As far as I can remember Oxygen OS had this feature already built in.
I just put my I.C.E. Info on my lock screen. With my emergency info and numbers on it.
If your medical conditions are that serious, you should have a medical alert bracelet or tag.
