I'm running Black Satin Medium right now and having AS 4.5 issues.
Have tried rebooting, reflashing, changing ROMs, uninstalling...all with no effect.
Checking my system, I see I have Net Framework 3.0 installed. Will this cause the errors with WM6?
Should I uninstall the 3.0 and keep 2.0?
Anyone else have this issue with the 2.0 Net Framework?
Thanks,
Jim
.Net 3.0 is still pretty fresh, but I don't know to what extent A/S uses it anyway (have always assumed not much). Perhaps if you could describe what "issue" you're referring to...

It does not recognize the device with advanced USB enabled. With advanced USB disabled, A/S does not even kick in.
Then after 10 minutes of charging, I get a bubble in the task tray stating "the USB device could not be recognized..."...and words to that effect. Unplugging and then plugging it back in will restart the charge but still not A/S connection.
It happens with every ROM I have tried. It will sync ONCE and then begin this behavior.
Jim
Hmmm... got another computer you can try it on? Beyond that it's sounding as though the USB in your phone may be borked.

The odd thing is...
1) this is a factory refurb...was an issue with the 1st unit as well
2) I can flash by doing a Hard Reset and then flashing on a fresh ROM.
Jim
One other note...My Internet Sharing does work...so this is very odd. It seems to be isolated to A/S 4.5...have downgraded Net framework from3.0 to 2.0. Still no effect.
Jim
Have you tried re-installing the Active Sync app?
For me looks more related to Active Sync Communication problem(Driver not properly installed.. May be)
imho there is no connection between .netcf and A/S.
check usb cable, try another comp, try to connect using wm5torage etc.

I always disable adv usb functionality for just this reason. I still use CF2 though. First time it (sometimes) kicks in, but will never set up a second partnership with another PC, even on the occasions when the first one is set up ok.
I suspect that this issue is quite likely confined to XP users but don't actually know. I only say that because Microsoft are buggers for forcing people onto new desktop OS platforms where they can and to be honest I assumed before ever using WM6 that I'd start to come across issues for which MS would 'prescribe' vista as a 'solution'.
Just a guess, mind - but we all know what they're like.
I have not had any problems with .net 3.0....
Where do I find the A/S driver? I have already uninstalled and reinstalled A/S.

There is no separate driver, they are installed when you install active sync. Since re-install did not make any change, I strongly suggest try the active sync on someother pc. This is give you a definate idea as to 'What is wrong'(Phone hardware or the softwareA/S)

Tried it on my desktop, running XP. Again, same issue.
If I hard reset, I can sync. This weekend, I think I will load each program one by one and try to sync and find the culprit to this problem.
I think it may be a software issue, as if I HR I can create an A/S relationship with my laptop and my Internet Sharing is still working, even if I cannot use A/S.

My unit syncs fine at home but it wont connect at the office. It charges but is never detected by the PC (not even a "ta dah" USB sound). Common problem? Can anyone post a solution?
check in activesync connection settings
make sure that allow USB Connections is CHECKED
I get the same issue, running Black Satin.
I have uninstalled and re-installed the AS 4.5 and nothing.
I did a hard reset and it worked for a while and then just stopped.
I don't know if its a software conflict, a ROM issue or an M$ issue.
Good thing I was able to sync everything I needed though.

Happens here too. Most common after a successful sync then I disconnect then I try to reconnect. A reboot usually clears the problem (or logging off and on).
I'm running Vista and Sync Center (latest version).
Running Satin and 4.7 radio.
does this seem to be an issue with Satin? =P
i ran all blacks up to satin - opted for vp3G's v3.0
happens to me too with vista, but no issues with windows xp lol
One thing to try is to soft reset the phone by taking out the battery. In other words, don't reset using the button. Physically remove the battery, wait a minute or two and reinsert the battery and start the phone.
been getting this issue myself in the last few days.... I'm running my own cooked version of ATT's WM6 and vista. Reseting my phone and or my computer helps but its bugging me like hell!

Happened with Custel's Ultimate as well as VP3G's as well....not as bad as with Satin.
Now it will NOT sync at all.
Like I said, no big deal as it's already configured but it's an inconvenience.
I'm running XPSP2, AS 4.5 with Radio 1.48.

I've seen this Activesync issue with Shap's latest rom as well. I'm 100% this problem is caused by the rom. Therefore, I'm now back to the official WM6, since then, no problems.
i ran almost all versions of black and it happened with all of them off and on. i'm now using satin and syncing with vista.

Dont think its caused by the rom since it was already like that even before i flashed it. Its not my unit either as i do not have problems syncing with my home PC.
This is an issue for me since I need my calendar.
By the way, even without active sync installed, my PC does not detect my 8525. I think that's the main problem.
For me, with the office computer running XP, with ativesync 4.5, it syncs fine.
Home, however, I need to uncheck the "enable advanced network functionality" check mark under the "usb to PC" settings in the connections tab on the phone. The Home PC runs XP Pro, also with activesync 4.5.
Both computers are as up-to-date as they can be.
It has been doing this for the last 3 Sleuth ROMs, and all the Pandora ROMs. Also did it with a version of Schap's, and 2 versions of LSVW.
I just uncheck the box and move along. HTH

if your computer doesnt recognize your phone at all, it might be your usb driver. it could be corrupt. go to the device manager in your computer uninstall and then search for new hardware and it should reinstall itself and fix the problem.

Enable means the Communication is through the IP-protocol, check if your Firewall Software isn't blocking the link.
Disable means the "old" USB-protocol is used without the Firewall Software interfering.

I've specifically allowed anything Active-Sync on the home computer firewall, with no luck still.

mostly all it takes is a soft-reset on your hermes

Welcome to the club. Alot of people are complaining about this, yet the people who actually have a fix, have yet to post it. This thread will be locked cause its been "asked before". So before that happens, what i did was create a mail2web account and sync all my contacts thru their free exchange service. Works like a charm and it does it all for you on the fly as soon as you finish entering a contact on your phone.
I boot Windows maybe once every few months--and then only for a few minutes, plus I've never had sync trouble with WM6.1 under the Vista Home Premium I do have. I searched a little. Seems people with the same symptoms actually have different problems, so the fixes are different. Just saying "I upgraded and can't sync" isn't enough information to really go on.
Yes, this has been asked before (about five or six threads alone in the past couple months.) And yes, it has been fixed for many people. Just because a fix works for someone else doesn't mean it addresses your own personal problem, though.
Some possible fixes mentioned over the last two months or so:

This might be stating the obvious but just in case, you almost always have to remove your old pairing before it detects the new version. I try various rom versions often and mine has never paired if there is an existing pairing. You must delete the old pairing and let it detect and set it up all over again.
Once I did get two devices to show up but sync center didn't respond after that.
Also it should be stated that many times when deleting a pairing it doesn't actually go away and I must reboot in order for it to actually remove. If this happens and I don't reboot it stops doing its job but still responds to mouse clicks. I have tried restarting the services to no avail and seems only a reboot fixes.
My experience has been with my phone with about 6 different ROM versions and with my team's devices as I upgraded each one (~5 devices) and I found each one required me to remove the old pairing first and re-setup a new one each time.
Hope this helps,
Chris
Update active sync
Update to the newest active sync. If you have Vista, you have to go to windows mobile sharing center and sync it that way. It will set up your dash, until you go to the sync center, nothing will happen. Trust me, nothing.

Well, it would help a lot to know what ROM you have
try desabling advanced network functionality on start-settings.connections-usb to pc: Untick that (Not sure if your ROM has this option)
Good luck,
im running kaneva 6.1
Kavana 6.1 Excalibur i did what u said still didnt wrk even hard reset didnt wrk
I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the cable.
A USB cable is just a USB cable right?
Wrong.
It turned out that the cable I was using was from my SatNav unit, not the one that came with the phone.
The phone lead works just fine with the navigator but the phone doesn't like the navigator lead.
Honest.
I'm not even making this up ...
Try a different lead. It really might help.
Stop laughing.
It might.
did that still didnt wrk
Bugger.
Thought I was going to save the day there.
In your first post, you imply that it used to sync via USB and now doesn't.
Are you trying this through ActiveSync or that Vista WMDC thingy?
Will it sync over USB on another machine?
Oh yeah - even though it won't sync, does your phone show up as a folder in Explorer?
idk if it will sync on other pc and kno it doesnt show up as a folder
Assuming that the USB drivers on your big machine haven't collapsed, is it possible that the socket on the phone is damaged or full of pocket fluff?
Try it on another machine. If that also turns out to be a joyless experience, it might be time for rolled-up sleeves, equipment and strong drink.
If you get no further on another system, post some more details -
ROM version
OS
Credit card number and PIN
etc.
You know the sort of thing.
I'm hoping the wisdom and expertise I always find on this forum can help me.
I have a new AT&T branded HTC Touch Pro 2 (Tilt 2). After about a week, I began getting the dreaded "USB Device Not Recognized" error any time I plug it in. It never connects properly. I have customized the phone using some of the cool tools I found here, but I have never flashed any portion of the device - it's just the way I got it (WM6.5 CE OS 5.2.21849 Build 21849.5.0.63)
As suggested in various places on this forum, I have:
Soft Reset the phone numerous times
Rebooted the computer (WinXP) many times
Tried several different cables, including the HTC branded extUSB one
Tried different USB ports on my computer(s)
Tried other computers (WinXP)
Tried Windows 7 (WMDC) on another computer
Hard Reset the phone several times (with and without backup restore)
Uninstalled and re-installed ActiveSync 4.5 and the USB drivers
Adjusted various settings, including USB to PC, according to various posts
Cursed extensively in three languages
Regardless of any of this, every time I connect, I get the "USB Device Not Recognized" error within a few seconds.
I am now convinced the problem is hardware, probably the USB connector on the phone. I can't be without the phone until later this month, so I can't get the hardware fixed for a while. But I need to sync.
USB, of course isn't the only way to sync; the phone has Bluetooth. The problem is, I previously reset the device and un/re-installed ActiveSync, removing the pairing at both ends. To sync over Bluetooth, I have to first sync over USB, something I can't do.
MY QUESTION IS THIS:
Does anyone know a way to force ActiveSync to pair over Bluetooth WITHOUT first pairing over USB?
Any assistance anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated

if u go to settings>connections>usb to pc un check enable faster data sync
that might help
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, that's one of the first things I tried and it makes no difference (I just tried it again - no joy). I should have listed it in my original post.
The only thing I can think of is to somehow force the phone to sync via Bluetooth WITHOUT having previously synced via USB.
Anyone know if this is possible and, if so, how to do it?
I think you should go and replace your hardware if it has warranty (since you have not flash it). tell them my phone USB connection is not working at all, and let them try it on their computers to make sure, am sure the warranty covers this kind of things
Uh, you're talking about the error on your PC right? This is a common issue. (with pc's) Use another USB port on the computer. That is what I have had to do. It worked fine for both the TP2 and my Wizard before that, but ever since I reloaded the computer I get that error on certain USB ports. have not researched it too heavily yet, but I plan to.
Did you try installing the Windows Mobile Device Center?

Did either of you read the post? It clearly states that he has done BOTH OF YOUR SUGGESTIONS!
Unfortunately, it does sound like this is an issue with bad hardware in the phone. I would suggest getting it replaced under warranty.

I'm having the same problem (vzw TP2). I've already messed with all usb-to-pc settings, tried different USB ports (I've had other USB devices that req'd that), reset my PC (thank you dogbert), reset my device and am currently reinstalling ActiveSync; though I doubt that's the problem because my BT syncs work fine (I don't recall being req'd to do a USB sync intially before doing a BT sync, so I can't really help the OP with that). My device does charge via the USB cable when plugged into the PC. Disk drive mode doesn't work any more than activesync. I also haven't been able to spot it on device manager. Uninstalling it there was one of my first ideas.
I'm wary of using a BT sync to install the official VZW 6.5 ROM, because I've read bad things about ROM interruptions.
I have yet to find by searching anyone who had a real USB sync problem (i.e., one that doesn't get "fixed" by resetting or something equally simple) who has actually posted that they found a solution.
@OP, when do you get a message that you are req'd to sync by USB first? Does activesync tell you or your device?
I have this problem at work where the machine is managed. It just refuses to recognize the device. It's a security issue that we haven't been able to track down yet. I think if you look in one of the logs (forget which) you will see the actual error as it tries to load the driver.
just for the hell of it, try an older version of activesync. just tryin to throw in all possible fixes. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...3a-28bf-4cac-a682-58d3233efb4c&DisplayLang=en
try removing the sdcard and syncing?
RE: A New Approach
Thanks for all your responses. Sorry to take so long to respond to your questions and suggestions, I've been away (funerals and CES).
I have read extensively on this subject, have tried EVERYTHING everyone has suggested, and reached the conclusion that this IS a hardware problem, probably involving the USB jack itself.
At least for a while, replacing the hardware is something I can't do.
I want a BT sync for syncing with Outlook (Calendar/Contacts) and for installing software. I currently have NO plans to flash the ROM, I agree that would be risky over BT.
The error appears to be generated by Windows, I don't think it ever gets as far as ActiveSync, ActiveSync always indicates that it is not connected.
Despite that, I did try an earlier version of ActiveSync (can't remember which one); no joy. I tried Windows Mobile Device Center on a Windows 7 machine, but the results were the same: Device Not Recognized.
SO, does anyone know how I can force a BT sync WITHOUT first syncing by USB? That would solve my immediate problem.
Unfortunately I been there and done that.
The only workaround is to use a free exchange server - www.alol.net.br
I put it on my computer's outlook. Copied all the contacts and calender items from my default folders. Synced with ALOL. Installed on my phone, and synced via my wifi.
Not the best solution, but T-Mobile refuse to fix the faulty Diamond motherboard, but it works fine.
The first sync on the phone comes up with a error message, but after that it is fine. You need to manually put in all the settings.
I'm assuming that you have your phone set to "Activesync" + Enable Faster data synchronization on your Phone, under Settings->Connections->USB to PC
Have you tried changing this to "Disk Drive"? Activesync can still connect to the phone and do syncs, etc.
Atleast this is my experience on XP. I've had the same problem on/off after flashing one particular custom ROM.. Don't remember seeing this on my stock Tilt2 ROM.
Have you tried turning your computer Windows' firewall competely off? I read soom were that there seems to be some confict with windows firewall reconizing Activesyc.
None of the settings in the phone, including Disk Drive, make any difference. I'm fairly certain that I've tried them all. None of the settings on the PC side, including Firewall, make any difference either.
The connection never gets to ActiveSync; the USB drivers fail to recognize the device well before that.
As I mentioned earlier, I have become convinced that this is a hardware problem with the phone, probably related to the USB connector. All my research leads there.
The approach I'd like to try is to bypass USB connectivity completely and attempt to sync over Bluetooth. The problem is that ActiveSync refuses to sync over Bluetooth until AFTER the first USB sync (and setup).
Thus my question:
Does anyone know a way to force a sync over Bluetooth WITHOUT first syncing over USB. Registry hack? Settings change? ANYTHING?
Quick note.
This issue started happening to me as well.
And here's the somewhat odd part. With the SD card removed the phone is discovered properly. The original SD card and another spare one inserted in the phone cause the this USB error for me.
Go figure.
(and yes I've tried formatting the sd cards, and factory resetting the phone)
Since I use ubuntu, I'm not really going to spend anymore time figuring out this windows bug. Just needed to apply an update..via windows.
Try this it worked for me
http://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/usb-device-not-recognized/
I searched... I unchecked the USB to PC "enable faster data synchronization" checkbox... I ran a repair/reinstall on my PC's ActiveSync software... Tried 2 different USB ports (but haven't tried a different cable yet, as I don't have another with me)... And reset my Tilt 2 a few times already, and my Tilt 2 refuses to connect or sync with my PC.
Worked fine here on Friday, but today I got nothing. The only thing that I noticed that was different over the weekend was that I got the Sleep of Death once and had to pull the battery.
Below is my current configuration. Anyone have anything else that I can try? If I can't get my syncing to work, my phone may end up being completely useless to me... That would make me very sad.
Thanks,
Debbie
Well, I started to respond and see you already had my suggestion; disable "Enable faster data sync", which for me does break ActiveSync.
So I'll go with this tact; if this is in fact broken for you for some reason, does USB work at all? How about using the phone as a drive? That said, are you sure you didn't check the default when plugging in the phone to be something other than ActiveSync?
Settings->Connections->USB to PC, last option is "Ask when I connect device to the PC"
If all else fails, personally I use Google for my calendar, contacts sorta with Google, and I load all apps via the browser, so I haven't used ActiveSync in about a year myself. So at least for me, if ActiveSync is broken entirely it's not a big loss. You could also try Bluetooth syncing if it's absolutely required.

USB doesn't work at all. Just tried the "Ask when I connect device to PC" and nothing happens. :::whimper:::
Could my port be damaged (it will charge via USB, however)?
EDIT: Just did a hard reset after exhausting all other ideas... Crossing all appendages that it was software interferring with the sync process... Pray with me, please.
EDIT... AGAIN: Nope, hard reset didn't do squat. I'm truly sad now and fear that I may need a USB port repair... Anyone have experience with this or can point me the direction of repair that won't cost me as much as a new Tilt 2? I'm truly gutted.

Absolutely, you can get a small Bluetooth adapter for your desktop PC which will just plug into a free USB port and enable you to connect your PC to just about any BT-enabled device, your TP2 included
BT uses a very standardized set of protocols, so any adapter that says it supports "version 2.0 + EDR" should work just fine for you. Once you get the adapter installed on your PC, syncing your phone is just a matter of setting the new activesync connection, and after that it should be just as easy as ever....easier even, without the cable!
um, is that what you were asking? lol I'm 99% sure it was, but...

Yep, that's exactly what I meant, Chris! Getting the USB port fixed will undoubtedly happen at some point, but for now that Bluetooth USB adapter will fit the bill nicely.
I just connected my Tilt 2 to my PC with the original cable and I got nada... Syncing is definitely shot. Thank God it will still charge or it would be a total loss to me.
Looking at Newegg.com now for my bluetooth thingy... Any other reputable suppliers that I can check for one? I suspect that it was my Ebay car charger that fried my USB.
EDIT: Seems some of the better rated ones on Newegg indicate USB 2.1... Is this still OK?

Cool, I'm glad I was thinking along the same lines
Yes, any adapter that is BT 2.0 or above should work just fine, the 2.1 adapters are just a bit newer. I assume you're looking at the two zoom models on newegg? I think either one will work great, I just really can't tell what the exact difference is between the two.
It's a little confusing when looking at the BT adapters, they don't do a very good job of making clear the difference between USB 2.0 and BT 2.0. But...just make sure that the adapter is BT 2.0(or +), and it will work with whatever USB ports your PC has (older or recent)...they're all backwards compatible.
FYI, the TP2 also supports file transfer via BT (so you can move cabs etc back and forth even without using activesync, usually much faster than through activesync), and printing too!

I didn't say that....but I'm not aruging it either
Went with this one ASUS USB-BT21 USB 2.0 Mini Bluetooth Dongle.
I might get a second for the home PC, if all works out well.
Shipped already, so I'll probably get it in a couple of days (they're pretty fast).
Wish me luck!

Sweet, I was secretly looking at the same one (well, it's price anyway!)...so, your impressions will be welcome once you've had a chance to try it out!
Sure, I'm happy to be the guinea pig!

Bluetooth Sync Successful!
...Kind of.
I forgot that I did a hard reset to try to resolve my USB syncing problem (without success) and had to restore my PIM backup to get my info back in there. Now, I've got all those duplicate/blank records to delete again... DAMN!... I had ignored my own rule!!!!
Anyway, I'm glad that this new phone isn't a loss to me now. Kind of a bear to get set up only because I don't usually use any BT devices, so it was a bit of a learning curve for me. Now that I've got that all sorted, it should get easier as I get more familiar. Not as easy as docking it, of course, but at least it's effective!
Debbie
...Who will be deleting for the next couple of hours.
Did u try plugging your phone into a different computers USB to see if that worked?

YAY!!!
DAMN!!
YAY!!
DAMN!!
YAY!!
Ok...that's 2 damn's and 3 yay's...so with a net gain of 1 yay, I think this is still a win! lol
Seriously though, I hope that other than the dup contacts this method will end up being relatively painless for you.

Yeah, I did, including different cables. Syncing capabilities via USB are definitely fried.
My Kaiser synced up fine, however, so it's definitely my Tilt 2.
Syncing has been going well, once I got it all sorted out, so yes, Chris, all is well with the world again... Now, I can switch back to 'playing' with my new Rhodium!

SKTools has some nice duplicate files software...just gotta be real careful with what you remove as it may be the same file name for a different program.

I ended up just hard resetting the Rhodium and starting the sync process again. Believe it or not, that was easier. LOL!
Will look at SKTools... Thanks!

Haha yea I know the feeling. At one point I duplicated 3 of each contact and appt.
I like Seven for syncing to e-mails, contacts and calendars because it is all push technology. When I update a contact in Outlook regardless of where I am it will automatically push that info to my phone, that way I do'nt have to worry about docking it (although i'm not sure if it does reverse sync, where if I have an appt on my phone shows up in outlook).
Hi Every One
I have exactly the same problem grrrrrr
I have win XP pro sp3, tilt2 with last HTC official upgrade
I made a search in XDA, Google it, htc forum nothing to do
Finally I do hard reset and is work …… for 2-3 hours
Then I think I find the problem bat I do not have the solution
Well, when you connect the tilt2 to you PC this stupid one consider the phone as modem and the tilt is configured to be used for internet sharing, even if you click on the phone that you want this connection as activesync,
So, once the phone is in modem or sharing mode, activesync cannot work properly and get access to synchronize, in other word you cannot do booth, and as the default connection in this situation is modem and internet sharing so bye bye activesync
I go to task manager and delete the modem, once you connect your usb, the modem appear under network card/widows mobile based device
A doesn’t know if this situation is a bug from HTC or uncle bill… I am trying to fix this from almost 2 days
I hope this help
Thank you
PS: please I am not to expert, so perhaps I am wrong correct me if it is the case
PS 2: Sorry for my English
Ive been on the other side... I did upgrade to 6.5 sense 2.5 rom and usb stopped... I tried everything, cables, computers, roms, hard resets, patchs, activesync repairs, botting ppc and pc, booting ppc plugged in pc, install - uninnstall activesync, deleted partnerships, etc, in one word - everything founded on the net. Nothing worked. No usb, no activesync, just "usb device not been recognized...". Finnally, I gave up. Contacted DebbieNY13 for bluetooth syncing instructions and bought bluetooth usb 2.0 edr 2.1 adapter. For no reason, I plugged a phone in a PC, and, as usual,my TP2 asked me for type of connection, I said activesync and... it started to sync! One time, two, ten, then I change connection to USB and my SD showed up as usb device! Unbelieveble! Thats happened yesterday and my phone still got usb whenever I want! I really dont know whats happened or what I did, it simply works. Only difference from times when sync was ordinary thing is, when i plugged a phone and decide which way of usb connection I want, little pop up shows up with text"RNDIS Serial USB connection Hide", or something like that, and quickly dissapeared. Thats my case, hope Ill find out whats going on and post it on forum.
Please do! Yours is not the first that I've heard behaving wonky like that.
Here's praying that mine someday starts working all on it's own, too!
