Just thought I'd mention this as it may shed some light for anyone else having connection problems. I've got it sorted now and it's synching perfectly, but I had problems recently getting active synch to connect. The problem lay with me recently installing a new standalone firewall called comodo, which is an excellent firewall but very fussy. I had to create network rules. The MDA has a LAN IP of it's own. So I had to add a Trusted Zone that included my PC's IP and the MDA's IP. In the end, my firewalls network rules had two entries allowing synching both in and out between the MDAC3 and my pc. I found out the IP numbers by looking at the network logs when it wasn't connecting.
Anyway, just thought I'd mention it in case you've been trying to synch up and hadn't considered this possibility.

Hi
I have a wifi AP at home, and one at work, Both use WPA-PSK with mac addy auth. SSID Visible cause sh1te WM2003SE OS cant cope with hidden SSID.
Get a whole load of oddities from the XDA IIs. Both SSID's and keys are listed in the wifi setup on the device. What I would expect is that if I switch the device on when I am within range of the AP @ work, it connects to it no fuss, likewise, when I drive home, switch XDA on it connects, no fuss, unfortunately this is not usually the case. The following are in order of likelyness to occur!
Problem 1
Sometimes I switch it on, and it sits there searching for eons, never finds AP. If I disable and then re-enable wifi on the XDA then it connects.
Problem 2
Sometimes, the XDA will tell me that its connected to my home network when I am at work - it isn't!
Problem 3
Sometimes I switch it on, it connects to the AP, but no net connectivity - looking. Using PPC Ipconfig, I see that device never managed to get an IP addy. Stop, start wifi problem resolves
Problem 3
Occasionally, the PPC forgets the shared secret, and I have to re-input it, start/stop wifi before it will connect to the AP
Problem 4
Sometimes, it just BLUNTLY REFUSES to connect to the AP if I do the above. In this case I try all the above with a soft reset as well. If that fails then I need remove all the wifi AP's, soft reset, wait (ages) for it to see a new AP, enter the PSK then it will connect.
It also struggles to connect to other APs (wifi hotspots). Things work a whole lot better when there is just one AP involved (i,e not work and home).
Prob 4 occurs once/week, prob 1 occurs every day, others somewhere between. All problems are of course COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE for a product that has been released to the consumer.

Hello Veledron,
I've a similar problem: at our company WLAN is set up to reqire WPA and authentication with user certificates. Since it is not possible to import user certificates in Windows Mobile 2003 SE "out of the box" I found out how to do that - it is described here
http://www.jacco2.dds.nl/networking/crtimprt.html
a little bit difficould procedure, but it worked - I can see my personal company certificate in the private-certificate store of my MDAIII.
The problem is, that I can't get a connection. WLAN-Manager says "connected", but I can't receive an IP-address - and in the logs of our Cisco-APs I can't see anything from my PDA. What also is a little bit strange for me: the MDAIII does not remember the setting "authentication with certificates", it always switches to "authentication using PEAP"...
any idea?
thanks
Gerald
Hi Veledron & gekap
I too have similiar problem with my netgear router at home. It seems that everytime it connect to the network it will just keep scanning eventhough it prompt that it already connected. It been 2 days and still i cannot manage to connect
Hopefully there is a solution to this problem.

There is.... Turn off AP, or move device to location where it is out of range, remove all WiFi profiles from device, hard reset, turn on router. wait (ages) for device to realize that there is a wifi ap nearby, enter PSK, all is well.
There seems to be no pattern to the WiFi failures, I have to do the above maybe twice a week to get it to connect. When the device gets itsself into a poor state this is the only way.
You cant delete an active profile, and the profile list only appears when wifi is turned on (stupid!) hence the need to turn off the AP.

Hi Guys,
I manage to solve my wifi problem,
i just add the XDA IIs mac address to my netgear router plus assigned a reserve ip address based on it mac address and was able to connect successfully with no problem. Hope this solution helps.

Hi,
thanks for the tips, but all of them are not a solution for me. I do not have any problems connecting to WLANs using WEP or to unencrypted WLANs, but i guess that there are problems with WPA in the PDA2K. I think the guys of you who have succussful connected to a WLAN using WPA have done that using WPA-PSK, not WPA with TKIP as encryption-method and PEAP or certificates as authentication method over 802.1x.
In our company TKIP is mandatory, and it is necessary to use certificates for authentication - this can be done with either EAP-TLS (so called "smartcard or certificate" in the setup-menu of the PDA-2k) or using PEAP. I've troubleshooted this a lot, and I can't see any authentication packet coming to our Cisco-APs from the PDA2K using this methods (I've turned on advanced logging on the APs to see any little bit...).
I fear the worst, that the WLAN-driver of the PDA2K does not support TKIP! Of course WPA is supportet from Windows 2003 Mobile SE, but in my opinion that is not enough - the card driver down the OS must also support the whole WPA-Standard, and it seems to me that the PDA2K driver does only support WPA-PSK. I found an article which can be an explanation of the problem:
http://www.socketforum.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2924
So I've 2 questions to you:
.) which driver version is installed on your PDA2Ks? (you can find that in the registry under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Drivers\Wavedev - I've: Common: 0.04.01, Device: 1.06.01 GER, DriverVersion: 0.08.00, Patch: 1.00)
.) has anyone of you ever connected to a WLAN using WPA (not WPA-PSK!)?
thanks
Gerald
Is there an easy solution to my problem. I mainly use 2 wireless networks on a daily basis. One in the office and one at home. My office network uses fixed IP addresses and DNS servers, my home network has user-assigned IP addresses. Is there an easy way to use both without having to delete the IP address and servers when I am at home. I have only had my PDA2k for a week now and hope someone has a solution for me. Thanks in advance.
Come on guys! Any ideas.
Same situation here. Try 'IP Dashboard':
http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=9463
It's a today plugin that among other things allows you to setup several wifi profiles (with static IP and DNS for each one) and switch between them.
Works for me.
Thanks! Perfect. Does exactly what I want.
Hi Guys,
either I dont know how to search or there is no info on VPN on the forum(I probably dont know how to search) In any case. I need assistance. How do I setup a VPN on my TyTn running WM6 and also how do I get remote desktop client? I am sure this was around previously. Did MS remove it from WM6? Or was it HTC? It this is the case.. how can one get it back?
thanks!
here's remote desktop. How do you use it? I don't know how to set it up.
thanks!!!!
now for VPN....
cheers!
The remote desktop client is available in several places in this forum for download.
To set up a VPN:
add a new VPN server connection
enter the name / ip of the server you want to connect to
select the vpn type -- ipsec or pptp
next
enter your user name and password
finish
The only way I have found to connect to the von is to goto
Start-Settings-connections-connections-edit my vpn servers- -- tap & hold MY VPN
select connect
you must be using a plan that assigns you a public IP (not WAP)
hope this helps

Thanks cmccarter, done it but how will I know I am connected.. It does not say connected anywhere that I can see and when clicking/hold on the item it gives me the option to connect again, not disconnect as I would have thought The other thing is terminal server does not connect. It connects fine on USB. VPN/Remote desktop connects fine using normal internet on pc from outside the network. So I believe the network settings are fine.. How would I know though if I am on WAP or get an IP. Also ow would I know if the VPN is connected?
thanks

i also have struggled getting rdp to work over a vpn, in particular over 3+/hsdpa
the only i found in wm5 was to add the vpn connect to the exceptions list of the connection manager, so that it didnt disconnect the vpn whem connecting the rdp.
this occurs more when u use an ip address to connect to a work intranet.
suppose if u use the dns name of the machine and not the ip address then it isnt that much of an issue. in wm5 when u put the ip address in it assumes a an internet rather than intranet connection so it disconnects the vpn to look for the ip over the internet
putting the ip into exceptions forced wm5 to not disconnect it when rdp was looking for it.
i cudnt get it to work this way in wm6 so i am also looking for an answer on this.
rdp to my servers when they have crashed and i am on the road wud b wonderful....
Hi,
I've a similar problem.
I use a VPN-1 SecuRemote that normally connect my PC directly to the company network.
Well, using the share modem tool, I'm not able to reach the gateway.
the share modem system give me a private IP that establish a connection between PC and TYTN.
This connection use the Tytn like a gateway to navigate in internet.
Someone know to solve this issue?
Tanks a lot
if i select start the vpn connection, nothing happens - and i can`t ping the IP`s in the VPN. so i think the vpn ist not open - OR the routing entrie is missing....
is there some shiny "pptp - standalone" client?
greets, Nik
for some reason i dont think the vpn option works over 3g/hsdpa, atleast not on my device using t-mob web and walk.
if i connect the vpn when using wifi it connects and everything is fine, if i try and connect when i'm already running a 3g connection it doesn't work.
i dont think the radio stack is capible of handling a 3g connection and a vpn connection. we might need to go down the route of getting a seprate wm vpn client.
Some time ago I messed with the IP address settings of the various adapters in Wifi - network adapters on my orbit. Now I have an issue where I try to connect to my PC via USB and though the Remote-NDIs Host automatically gets an IP address of 169.254.2.1, shortly after connecting via USB I get a message:
Pocket PC Networking
Cannot obtain a server-assigned IP address. Try again or enter an IP address in Network settings.
Could some kindly soul please take a look through the adapter list and give me the settings of any adapters that don't have a server-assigned address selected?
Pete.
Nobody can look at their orbit on O2 and tell me what adapters have static I.P's as default?
My setups all say 'Use Server assigned IP address' and it all seems to work OK
Cheers anyway
Each time I connect the phone to either my laptop or my PC I get the above message after a minute or so. In desperation today I went through the whole adapter list assigning a loop-back IP to each adapter one after the other then reconnecting the USB lead. Still get the same message
The exact problem here. Any news on how to solve this? It hapenned after I used Internet Sharing on my PDA.

This problem has been raised before and I eventually found a cure - can't remember exactly what is was but seem to remember having to set up a fake email account and then deleting it. Try a search in Google or similar I think that's how I found it. Sorry I can't be more specific at the moment but it is something that can be corrected.
PS - just found this on the Axim Site - not quite how I remember it but give it a try!
"Problem solved
I had this problem and found a fix.
I solved it by going to Settings|Connections|Configure Network adapters. Set
the 'Remote-NDIS Host' settings to use a specific IP address of 169.254.2.1,
subnet 255.255.0.0, default gateway 169.254.2.2
This is what they should be anyway, everything should work now and no
annoying message."
Since few days my dataconnection gets lost, when I try to use it. For example when I start Messenger and try to login, TP2 connects then it says Dataconnection is not available check your connection settings. After several attempts it connects stays stable for one or two minutes then again connection breaks down. I also tryed to reset the data connection via connection-wizard, nothing helps. I think something in the registry is messed up...
I don't want to do a hardreset and install all the programs again. Does someone have a good advice for me?
My Rhodium is the same situation. I am a Japanese, and mopera of Docomo is used.
[Understand now]
Cellular Line IP address & Default Gateway is same.
Primary DNS & Secondary DNS is active. I receive PING.
I can't receive PING form other site (mail server etc).
I did hardreset. But my Rhodium is not connect to Internet.
It investigates for a while. If you have good idea, then advice to me.
Same here with MTS Serbia.
I check data connection settings and all adjustment are same like automatic configuration setup but i cant get back data connections.
Hello every one.
I have understood the cause of this problem.
Perhaps, every one set WiFi's DNS server at manual.
If it's possible, set DHCP. Then DNS server is active and you can get e-mail and you can access to Internet.
I think this problem is WM network access process.
I will not use DHCP. I research other process for GPRS.
Thanks msaf, your advice resolve my problem!
I set WiFi's DNS server at manual and when i set on default i got gprs connection again
Hi,
This is an unusual problem as the wireless network card shouldn't have anything to do with GPRS!! Anyway, it seems having automatic DNS for wifi does solve the problem of GPRS but my Wifi connection will not work unless I specify the DNS manually. Therefore, it is a hassle to change between these 2 options whenever I need to change between WIFI and GPRS.
Any way to fix this once and for all??
