I flashed the official WWE rom repackaged by Mr Vanx and the car charger worked OK
I flashed Schaps early version 3.57a and it charged OK in the car. New 3.57a doesn't :-(
Black satin and Sleuths new ones don't work either with car charger.
This a a major problem for me with Tom Tom on for several hours at a time, and I do not want to go back to WWE repackaged after seeing so many nice ROM's ;-)
Is there a fix for this?
I tried searching before posting but could only find one question on this and no answer #335 in Official AT&T thread.
Also see #35 in Farios ROM thread (WM 6)

i had no problem with anyone of the ROM you talk about (all tried) and car charger
I have had the car charger problem too! Except I had it back with the stock WM5 ROMs as well, so I don't think it is related to the cooked ROMs.
Sometimes my car charger simply would not power the device, unless I did a soft reset. This happened using both the Y-connector and direct mini usb. I don't seem to have the problem nearly as much with the WM6 cooked ROMs.
Anyone know where this problem comes from?
I just thought it was a dodgy car kit, i find a soft reset sorts it out.
non-HTC chargers can be modified to work 100% without any software modification.
Simply pry open the mini-USB male plug and link/solder pink 4 and 5 together.
Pin 4 & 5 are the pins on the right side (when the pins are facing UPWARDS)
I did this with one of my mini-usb cables and now it can charge my HTC with any USB power source.
Laptop in stand-by mode
USB wall charger
2xAA USB portable charger
USB car charger
etc
I have the HTC car charger which was offered as a promotion with the Cingular 8525 when it was introduced late last year. This charger does not pass enough current to keep up with high current draw situations like a very low battery (and possibly heavy device use?) I think it may only put out 500mA. I would try a charger which puts out 1,000mA first and see if that fixes the problem.
Did work before WM 6
The charger I am using worked perfectly before WM6 flash, so I doubt if it is a current problem.
Only other possibility is that wm6 changed the USB somehow (unlikely)
UPDATE _ Well a soft reset and it now charges. I just hope it doesn't require SR regularly when travelling in the car
Al
The Cingular charger that I have makes the phone charge every time, flawlessly, no soft reset required.
My Garmin GPS 20SM on the other hand does not connect pins 4 and 5 together, and thus will not charge the phone. If I do a soft reset after connecting it to the phone, it is fine. Trying to connect the pins in the charging cable together resulted in blowing up the charging module (in the GPS, the phone is fine). There is the possibility that I screwed up the solder job somehow. The funny thing is that I opened up the mini-USB connector side of the Cingular car charger and probed it using a multimeter - the same two pins that I connected together in the Garmin charging cable were shorted (either in the cable, or at the cigarette socket end, the pins were not connected together in the USB end).
I have actually sent an e-mail to AT&T requesting that they fix the software restriction preventing car chargers that send enough power to charge the phone (like my Garmin GPS 20SM). Whether or not they ask HTC to do it, that's up to them. HTC apparently will not fix this issue without prodding from the individual operators (that's what their e-mail to me said).

I've an old Black 2.0
The same problem for me with the car charger....sigh
I'm running Majick & get the same. All was fine before I upgraded from WM5, but now the charge light stays on only if I've done an immediate soft reset or once it goes to stand-by. My BT headset connection also drops after about 5 mins of non-use, unlike when it's charging.
i think this issue is only related to the pin of the USB car charger connector. First time i put my hermes in my old car charger i used with my Wizard, i get this issue... i change the ROM several times, and every time i get the issue... then, after some research i buy a charger for hermes, and after this, i never have seen this issue with all the ROMs i have tried... and tried every ROM Now i'm on Sleuth 3.1 and, of course, no problem with the charger.
Seems also that somes ROMs have something modified to bypass this issue by software, but don't know wath...
So my recomendation is that you look for one specificaly hermes charger and not one with the USB cable removible.
Good luck.
More on my charging woes - ROM Chefs - help needed
Well today I plugged my phone into the car charger and nothing happened again. I did a complete restart (hold off button then confirn shut down) and after restarting it worked again. Take the charger plug out and put it back in, then nothing.
I may look for a Hermes charger but expect they are expensive. Until then I think it will be back to the boring official release as I can't be bothered with an SR every time I get in and out of the car.
My charger is not a removable cable type but a cigar plug one end and a solid USB the other. I don't think it is current related either since I had it working with TomTom on a low battery on several occasions on the WM 5 rom.
Perhaps some of the talented ROM chefs can figure it out ;-)
Al
@Alabama,
When you experience this problem is it after having had the phone tethered or connected to your computer via the usb? I ask because this is a known problem with the 6700. It has something to do with the unit converting from one current to the other. Personally I suspect it has something to do with the SPL version. I'm afraid the soft reset is the recommended fix. I have seen this with a couple of the Black ROM's.
Currently I use vp3G's v3 and it has gone away.
I asked Faria about this in one of his threads and he said it has something to do with the power management settings in the ROM itself. If we can edit that, then the car chargers will work.

I actually have the Cingular charger, and it works fine with my phone. But, if I want to use it and the GPS 20SM at the same time, then I need two cigarette lighter outlets, and my car only has one. So, I'm getting by with using a splitter to power both units simultaneously.
It just sucks having to do that when the GPS 20SM is providing a perfectly good power signal that can be used. And after proving to them that they need to provide a cable that works specifically with the Hermes, they have mysteriously become silent on the issue. My only hope here is that HTC fixes the firmware as to not block it (as the same cable works with a T-Mobile SDA).

We'll just have to keep our fngers crossed...
i found a trick. if you plug the car charger and then turn off the phone it starts charging even if you turn it on again
Assuming that you are talking about actually powering down the phone (hold the power button, as opposed to just a quick press, which "suspends" it), this is roughly the same thing as the soft reset trick. Suspending the phone and then bringing it back on does not work (with vp3G's ROM anyway).
My only beef with the soft reset trick is that the phone takes 30-45 seconds to boot, which is a pain when I want to use the GPS application.

Yes, but only when the phone restart (hold the power button) the charge
re-work (and the orange led turn it on...)
There is no solution when the led turn off...plug..re-plug the cable, unplug all the charger....Turn off the car...and (google translation...) "come down from the car to take one fresh air puff"… ahahah

I would like to get a car charger that works with the O2 Exec when I am running navigational programs such as Garmin Que and TomTom. I have tried more than 5 chargers but no luck thus far.
If anyone has any to recommend, do let me know. I am located in Singapore.
i use my car charger from my gps that is the Holux 236, the only think i have to do so that it starts charging is turn it off on the button and the led will change to orange, i have tried one other charger that has a usb plug and it worked fine ! So has long as it has a usb plug you'll be alright and if you do not find one look for the Motorola car plugs that it will probably work on Uni since it has a mini usb plug
The charger from M3000 works fine with my Uni
And the Motorola Mini-USB chargers doesn't work...
Hi, I found that this issue is connected with proper usb cable not with charger itself (usb mini have 5 connector but in some cables only 4 are connected and in some other cables all 5 are connected and so are the difference). I was also trying many chargers and no luck. But I ve tryied charger with other cable and suddenly all chargers start charging my jasjar.
Anyway, the bad thing is it stops whitout any reason so now charging jasjar in my car is a real mystery for me.
regards,
Piotr
Be careful if buying one with a double USB output - I bought a few different models hoping to power both Exec and the Holux GPSlim-236, but all failed. They would power the Exec, but as soon as the Holux was connected, it would always cause the Exec to continually reboot - fortunately "soft". Make sure the supplier will take them back if it doesn't work.
Try a car charger with a USB socket on the end that takes a separate Sync/Charge cable.
The problem is, the exec is very power hungry, especially when the batt is dead !! you need a high current charger at least 1A (1 amp) the charger used with the blackberry (I forget which model) is suitable as is the genuine exec charger obviously.
use O2 Atom car charge
O2 Atom car charge will work with O2 Exec as well as A/C charger from Atom
Exec/SPV car charger...
Got an o2 branded one today for the Exec/Mini - works like a charm (Charges my SPV and runs Tt at the same time) but cost me £14.99 for the privelage!
could you post a link to the website? I would love to purchase one but am currently located in Singapore and so far all the charges don't seem to work for me.

Car Charger for UNI - how to make working
Hi All!
I've also tryed 2 diferent car chargers and 1 USB Pluggable Car Charger (some noname chineese 3-rd party) with 3 diferent cables, and one 3-rd party AC Power Charger. They ALL worked strange.
I can confirm that to make them all work I should:
1. Switch off the Universal;
2. Plug in the chgrer in to Universal;
3. Wait until the Red Light on.
Now I may turn the Universal On, and see the "Charging" battery status.
The reason and how to fix:
As you may see I used different adapters. All they have from 0.5 to 1.0A output circuit. But, the USB ports I used with my laptops have only 0.5A output and always start charging the Universal.
So, I dont think the output power is the reason.
The most likely - it is the "5-th pin" issue, which is mentioned above here. Can somebody provide information about power connection for the Universal?
It seems the solution is about to interconnect/short circuit 2 wires in the car adapter' cable to make the Universal charging in a usual way with any of my (your) "non-working" car adapters.
Also, I've noticed, that in a case the battery level around 30% and I plug in the "non working adapter" and no red light and system not is in the "Charging" state -- the battery is charging anyway!
Also, let me remind you about another issue that the Universal have: Active Sync (older versions) would not sync (USB Device not recognized error) if you plug in the Universal if the power is On.
To workaround that you have to switch off the Universal, plug the cable and after that you could successfully sync. The same symptoms? May be the same reason?
I would advice anybody not to mess with interconnections in USB, I mean stop soldering and checking because its shortest road to bricking Your precious jasjar. It can be done with proper cable and you have to find the right one ;-)
Secondly - I found that jasjar Rom is also responsible for charging issues. As I stated earlier I finally found good usb cable but later on I lost an ability to charge Uni. in the car. After upgrading to the Aku3.2 rom it start to charge immidiatelly. Same charger and cable - one time it charge, second time it dont. So additionally to cable theres something with soft with preventing Uni. from charging.
man why is it such a complicated issue to get the universal to charge? and it seems that this charging problem only happens to the universal and not any other device, am i right?

YESSS! I Have upgraded to on of that Aku3.2 recently! May be it is the reason! But, my original Power adapter still charges my Uni so does the USB conndction to the laptop...
To ALL: Could you please confirm that you can use third-party adapters with the older ROMs?
hopefully we can get some updates soon.
Are all chargers alike?
Are all chargers the same? I would think that the USB power rating would be the same. So, I should be able to charge the Jasjar using a charger for a Motorola RAZR (if I weren't so afraid of blowing up the Jasjar)
Suddenly I can't connect my Armetis via USB connection. I connect the USB cable, and the charging light start working (so there is a connection), but ActiveSync doesn't respond. I tried to HR the device - but problem doesn't resolve. I tried connect through another computer - nothing.
It seems that the problem is in my PDA, doesn't it? But I can charge it with the USB cable, so there is a connection.
Can someone please help me???
exactly the same here. see my thread i started a couple of days ago:

driving me mad!!
Hey mattan...
I totally agree i think it's something in the device going on. I was going to offer a list of apps i have installed to see if there's anything in common but the fact that you've done the HR implies not. Let me know if you manage to resolve!
I had the same thing twice in about 4 weeks. The store where I have bought my device has replace my P3300 each time I had this problem.
I was also using a non HTC car charger. On the last replace they also gave me an official car charger for my device because the last time the USB port dies happens when I just came out of the car and the P3300 was on the car charger.
On this new car charger I found a warning not to use this charger when starting the car.
So I think what has happened to my P3300 is that it dies when starting the car while it is already connected to the car charger. It could be that in some cases there will be a large voltage spike on the USB port which will blow up the USB port.
I have used my P3300 in the car with this car charger but I only connect it after the car has been started. Until know everything still works.
It must be a fairly common problem. HTC has a support site section dedicated to it:
http://www.europe.htc.com/support/faq.html?id=164&cat=synchronisation
have you downloaded the latest 4.5 version of activesync
Once I did that my sync hassles were solved

I don't get you.
Can you explain to me what to do ?
I had the same problem... drove me mad.
Anyway, ended up hard resetting my orbit and active sync started working again. I slowly reinstalled all my apps and when i installed tcpmp 0.72RC1 it stopped working again. I uninstalled it and i had active sync again.
Not sure you have TCPMP installed but if so try uninstalling it.. worth a shot!
I am using a generic charger with my m3100. When it is plugged into electricity my phone refuses to charge. A soft reset does not resolve this problem. When my phone is synced to computer via a USB cable the phone decides that it feels hungry and gobbles up electricity and charges itself, as if to taunt me. Its Bluetooth light flashes as if to try to intice me into doing something. I feel like Basil Fawlty and want to pick up a branch and hit my phone with it to teach it a lesson. I have not got mad..i am just frustrated with this as a major gripe with WM6 using a GENERIC charger designed for c500 but used to charge phone quite happily in WM5. The Car charger also generic also does not work. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
what rom is this on?
You might want to read this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=277742&page=1
In order to accept a charge, the phone either has to sense data, or two pins need to be shorted together. It is possible that the WM5 ROM removed this requirement, whereas the WM6 ROMs seem to enforce it.
In my case, I had to modify the cable that came with my Garmin Mobile 20 in order to get it to charge the phone, even though it was supplying enough power. It was the stupid data/pin short check.
In fact, if you use a multimeter to beep the pins of the Cingular car charger (which charges flawlessly), then you'll find that those pins are shorted, it's at the cigarette lighter end.
-- Joe
This condition exists on both WM5 and WM6. There are charging cables that meet this standard (pins 4-5 shorted together on the miniusb side). Unfortunately most chargers don't comply.
Hi,
I recently bought a car charger (actually, it's a 3-in-1 kit, with USB-2-miniUSB cable, plug-in car charger, and travel charger). This set seems not to work with my TyTn, but work perfectly with other HTC pda's - Touch, Cruise etc. However, that cable works nicely when plugged to PC.
Anyone have a clue? Maybe, I should change some power management settings in the TyTN?
Thanx
Hi,
I have the same problem.
Sometimes is charging O.K. (when the screen is off and Hermes is in Standby). But if I have a Phone Call, or if I use the car navigation, charging won´t work.
(Everythink was O.K. with WM5, I think, but WM6 and WM6.1 has this problem on my Hermes - I tried many ROMs, now I use CRCs PHKv12r9, Radio 1.47.30.10)
Get an inverter from Maplins http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=48723&criteria=inverter&doy=3m4 for £19.99 you can then use your home charger...
Ah OK scratch that idea I didn't look at the flags before posting...
I have one, but the question is, why car charger won´t work.
I use the inverter with everything up to 300W without any problems.
I dont understand WHY people have this problem.... I bought a CHEAP little car charger that allows me to use a usb cable. I plug in, leave for a minute or so and it starts charging. Make/ recieve calls, use GPS software and never have a problem. I would say that the charger was made good BUT its a generic "made in china" charger.... Must've been BLOODY LUCKY to find it...
I had this problem with mine, sometimes it would charge, other times it would need to be restarted before picking up the charger? This was using the same sort of charger that plugged into the lighter socket, then the USB-to-MiniUSB plugged into the charger.
I started using a spare charger for a TomTom One which worked perfectly.
In fact, I have 2 car chargers to which I plug USB-mini cable, both not working. I just wonder why... Can it be hardware or software problem? I suspect you all use WM6.... OK with WM5?
I can't find the post now, but there have been a couple of discussions about the charging issues with the TyTN. My TyTN is very picky about the charging cable. It has something to do with a requirement that the data pin in the USB cable either be connected to something live(like a computer) or that the data pin be jumpered to the ground pin.
I have tried a number of charging solutions and keep going back to the AT&T store for a charger that works. I have an external battery for my laptop from Battery Geek, Inc that has both a USB port on it and a mini USB charging cable. Both don't work with my TyTN but work with my wife's Wizard. Actually they work with my TyTN about 2% of the time, just enough to make me think it is going to work.
Someplace back in the archives I've seen a description of how to modify a USB charging cable to work with the TyTN, but I can't find it right now.
Rick
Look HERE !
I have a TomTom one car charger that worked fine on my Hermes when i had wm6 from T-Mobile installed. I then installed PDA corner v10 and worked now I upgraded to v11+ and its not charging any hack I can do to get this working ?? I got my Hermes installed how I want it but need to charge when in the car to get a whole days use.
Usually when I have this problem, I just turn off the phone, and then back on with it plugged into the car charger and it will work fine.. give it a try. I know its annoying, but its a simple workaround.
I plug it in and do a soft reset if it does not start charging.
Agree with above its a pain in the #@% but reset while plugged in usally works (untill you "use" the pnone, then it stops charging)
Or as has been said before, just buy a proper car charger and use that for the tom tom/other usb as well ?
Cheers
Fadge
tnt for toadays rom
This is what I do and it usually works for me (assuming you are connecting to car charger after activesync):
Make sure to power off (standby) your device while in activesync before disconnecting it from the computer. This does seem to be ROM dependent, as with some ROMs this is not necessary.
with my hermes i have similar problem but solution presented here - soft reset while plugged works for me allows to recharge my TyTN up to 100%
Thankyou
Thankyou will give this a go
All -
I posted quite a while back about why this happens... It seems not all USB-mini chargers are created equal... It turns out that apparently the connections between two of the 5 pins need to be "jumpered" (connected) which is easy enough if you have decent electrical / soldering skills and a charger you can half-way get apart. I can't for the life of me remember which two of the contacts need to be jumpered but if you do a search here on XDA I'm sure you'll find it. I bought a cradle-style charger on ebay, took it apart, jumpered the two pins, and have *NEVER* had the intermittent-charge-when-I-want problem again.
Hope that helps.
