Live Search - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

Live Search on the Today screen, which could potentially be a great feature, seems like a dud. When I type in a search term all that happens is that PIE opens to the LS home page and asks me to type in a search query again. Is there any way to change this? And if you do type in a term in addition, you get useless photos or maps of random places. Is there any way to change these? I've looked through Help and Menu and don't see one.
Also the new Live Search 2.0 program downloaded from MS is much much better, is there any tweak to get it to open to that instead?

Hermes Wiki has reghacks to change live search to use Google. I use this myself & like it much better.

I've got a seperate Live Search application that doesn't open up PIE and goes to the MS Live page. Everything is contained within the program.
It's this one here: https://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/domore/livesearch.mspx

Gurubumsmack, that Live Search 2.0 app is the one I was talking about, but it's unfortunately not integrated into the Today Screen. I like it and use it so often, that it's mapped to the PIE button on my 8525. I was hoping someone knew a way to substitute its search bar for the useless one in Windows Live which does have a Today Screen link.
I'd known about the reghack that substitutes Google but that wouldn't do much for me.

If it is MS live search then yes (I removed mine first just in case) if its some other search you may have to remove it (via settings) first
Installed this new Live Search cab,no longer can use Live Search on Today screen
Yes the program works well after installation, but now I have lost the capability of searching from my Today screen Windows Live Search. Any hints at what I should do to fix? What ever I put in to the space for search, it comes back with a window " The file http://mobilelive.com/search etc etc" cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. If the problem persists, try reinstalling or restoring this file".Never did use my Live Search on Today screen much , but now it bothers me not having it work. If I am not mistaken, it certainly didn't do the same type of searches that this new version is capable of doing. Can't remember whether it was configured to use Google search or not.. Anyways, somehow the installation buggered things up. Any ideas, I would be greatful for any recommendations. I did do SR, and even uninstalled the New cab, but ended up in a worse scenario, because I couldn't get my old version to work anymore. Looking for the string to change the Search URL to Google. I used to see it all the time, now I can't find it. Thought I would change the Search URL in Schaps Advanced config tool.
Just tried changing the Search string to use Google in regedit, and that did not help. Still can't do a Live search using Today screen search, or when I go to WLM using the search there. Anyone else experiencing this?
I have had no problems with mine. I installed the cab from the web site over the existing Live Search and it works great. I use live search , not Google so maybe that could be a problem. It almost sounds like the registry is messed up. I would reinstall the rom and then install live search again if you are going to use it.
Pre existing Live Search incorporated in WLM before this new one
I had WLM previous to overlaying this separate cab, so I didn't overlay on to a separate ,existing Live Search stand alone program.. Maybe this is why it didn't merge correctly into the WLM . I suppose that if I would have either deleted a previous separate Live Cab only and installed the new one , that might have made the difference.. Thanks

The "Search" Today plug in is from Windows Live. (Pocket MSN replacement) Which is not the same as Live Search. Live Search can be download here from your phone: http://wls.live.com/ Look in your programs folder and see if you still have "Windows Live". If so launch it and go to menu /options / Today Screen options.
Thanks Gwelker62
Thanks for straightening me out on the differences. Hopefully helpful to others.
thanks! for those that haven't installed it or clicked the link to look at new features, besides voice recognition it also added gas prices. I haven't actually driven around to verify if they are accurate or not, but at first glance they seem pretty close
thank you so much for the heads up! the voice recognition is slick, but the new gas prices option is even better!
loving the voice recognition... you can just say the name of the place you're looking for and it'll find it.
One question on the BT GPS, will it have step by step navigation if you have a BT GPS? or does it only shows your location?
Gonna have some fun with this methinks...
And by the looks of things its gonna thrape my bandwidth allowance with Orange...
Edit: switching to aerial and zooming into my house I did 2mbyte of data in like a couple of minutes.
Edit2: Does HSDPA downloads use more battery than 3G downloads? I assume they use the same aerial, but does HSDPA use more power transmitting and receiving? I know 3G uses more than GPRS.
can't get voice recognition working here?
have I read somewhere it is a u.s only feature?
anyone in the u.k got it working?the box is greyed out on my app.
live search and gps
i just downloaded and installed the new voice recognition version of live search and paired it with my bluetooth solar gps logger and it works perfectly
to sush1a, you can do both, turn by turn directions, or it can show your location and show you (if you follow the blue line) where to go.

New Live Search - very nice!

Have you seen the new Windows Mobile Live Search. Just got the update and its nice. It adds Internet (shortcut), and Weather of your current location.
Then it has something cool in there. Its called Collections, you get anything from Flickr, to recent Home Sales, Wikipedia, Upcomming Events, etc.
Very nice little add on.
I mainly use it for, well just about everything when I'm out on the street. Now if they could make the UI a little more pleasing, that would be nice.
Pretty nice. I have not figured out the "collections" area yet... not really a feed reader but it asks for RSS?? I had to update twice for some reason before I got the newest version 3.0.3047.24749 5/5/08 and I really like how it works with VR (voice recognition) since I almost live with my bluetooth on any more LOL
i don't like live search to much i use google mostly..but i'll give it a try where do u get the dl. from???

Just talk to the new Live Search via your speech, also you can get instant weather for you area and lots of other stuff, this new Live Search is really slick. Now Microsoft is in their "A" game, like the LA Lakers. You can get the new live Search by pointing your mobile web browser to http://wls.live.com.........!:D
I also prefer Google search over the Live search (web search, not the app) but I quit using the Google app since this started getting updated. I've got it running on both of my Dashes, my Kaiser, and my HP iPAQ 510 and while it renders differently on all of them, it works the same. And if you have a device with GPS, it's a TON more useful.
As I say at work, "better living through Microsoft."

I found a bug today, maybe it's just my phone as it is overclocked. When I use Maps/Directions with a Bluetooth GPS and someone tries to make a call my phone freezes and the call goes to VoiceMail. It didn't do it on the previous version. I'm going to send a messege to MS to let them know, BUT, could someone else try this out?
I wish there was an option where it always ran in the background as well as on the sliding bar as I use it 95% of the time.
MS has felt the pressure and they are now (I think) catching up.

It does not freeze on mine. Either answering a call with bluetooth headset or without. I am overclocked at 260
Since it's in nobody's signature and it's not been explicitly mentioned, I ask: is this version intended/designed for wm 6.1, hence in form of a CHome plugin/panel or only a fullscreen app?
Thanks in advance.
Cheers.

Are there any better PIM programs out there?

Does anyone know of any good Personal Information Management software for Windows Mobile? I am not asking a whole lot. Just be able to search for a key word among appointments, todos, notes shouldn't be too much to ask for, is it? The current Calendar and Task applications can't even do that.
Thanks!
there are a ton of them, google PIM, windows mobile and your search will come up with Pocket Informant, Agenda One, and a bunch of others.
thanks!

Actually, I have done a google search before. Like you said, there are a ton. Perhaps, I should change my question to which PIM is better for the WM 6.1.
thanks!
i have been using agenda one - works for everything I need and I am kinda picky. If theres something better fill me in. Download the free trial and see if you like it.

Try Papyrus or Agenda One - both are among the best

Thank you for the suggestions! I downloaded the trial version of Agenda One - supposed to be full featured with time limit. I tried several searches - some search all, some search only in appointment, or only todos. None of them worked. It looked like the program tried for a while, then it simply terminated (not the search, but the entire Agenda one program). It kicked me back to the today screen, and the process no longer listed in the task list
Try the recently released Papyrus 2. It's frakkin' amazing
try agendus over at www.iambic.com
Agenda One is no go

I signed up at Developer One support forum, and tried to post this question. It's been a couple of days, they don't even show my posting in the forum. I tried to ask the same question again, still blocked by the moderator. Oh well, moving on to Papyrus 2 trial now.
Thank you all for the suggestions! I thought I'd spend a few words sharing my opinions on the products I've been trying out:
Agenda One - in spite of the awards the company claims they have received, I find this product adds very little value to the existing WM 6.1 PIM functionality. Some pretty colors, that's it. When I started my quest for a better PIM, all I was looking for was a search function. Agenda One has it. I had made many variations of attempts to use it, search all, search in appointments only, search in todos only, search whole word, partial word, any words .... Not once did it ever complete the search with any result. Every single time, the function started, try for a while, then the program crashed. It simply terminate. I submitted the question to the company's support forum, the question itself didn't get posted until 5 days later - as the moderator has to screen every single post. When it did appear, other user indicated same problem on other smart phone as well. I'm not the only one.
Edit: the forum blocked my complaint, and finally come back with a question - it remotely sounds like it cares, but the question is useless. If they read my post, they would have found the answer there. I feel like dealing with a communist government official - sensor everything, sloooooooooow to respond and defend every criticism ...
Papyrus 2.0 - the calendar layouts are reasonably flexible, so you can customize how you want to see all the activities. The search is very fast, even if I have more than 30 matches, they show up as soon as the program finds them. There is one thing I don't like, but I suspect I may be able to figure out a way to change, that is, I only want to see todos that are not yet completed on a daily basis. Even though I have that specified, it is still showing me the todos that are already marked complete (not all of them, just the ones that have no dates associated with). To me, they are done, they are done. Why would I want to look at them everyday just because their complete dates were not marked? Other than that, everything seems to be pretty good. They've got nice colors just like Agenda One, and price is about the same.
Agendus Pro - Agendus Pro has a rich set of nice features - in addition to the regular calendar/todo/contact views, you can also access call log, email, quote of the day, day in history, weather forecast, and stock quote all from this application. I didn't think about these before, but, they are very nice to have. The cost of this product is no more than the others. Another nice feature - there is a tool bar (either on top or bottom of the screen) you can use to select the format of display (day view, week view, month view, list, contact, email, etc, etc. With the other products (Agenda One, and Papyrus), you have to press the view soft bottom, which brings up another screen that let you select the format. Agendus layout is more intuitive and direct.
Having said all of that, I do have a couple of complaints -
- Agendus Pro take up 3.7 MB, whereas Papyrus - 700 KB, Agenda One - 966 KB. These are the cab size, I know that Agendus Pro includes several language supports, which contribute to the bigger CAB size. Nevertheless, the memory foot print is still the biggest among the 3.
- my 2nd complaint is that when you load the program just to look at some details in an appointment, the program starts and you don't see anything in the calendar - it tells you that you don't have any activity. Then, a little box flashes "initializing ...", "initializing ...", "initializing ..." ... My screen went out 4 times before I can finally see the content of my day's calendar. If it takes less memory, I may just keep it running, which would not have the "initializing ..." problem. Since the program takes up so much memory, I don't want to keep it in the memory. This is a deal killer for me. It's too bad. I like the features a lot.
Edit: Since the above was written, I've tried two more software packages. Nothing stood out. One fenomenal ability make Papyrus shine among all the others is how fast the search function performs. Everyone else wait, and wait, and wait until they've collected all the matches and put them on the screen all at once. If you have a sizable database (mine has about 2000 entries), you'll be staring at a blank screen with a spinning wheel forever, the screen saver would kick in multiple times. Whereas Papyrus' search shows you the match results as it progresses through the database. Maybe the match I am looking for is the first couple out of 50, why would I need to wait until it finds 50 before showing me first two? That's just a simply logic. I don't get what the other developers were thinking ....
Needless to say, Papyrus 2.0 becomes my choice. Their forum is great, too! Very happy about this decision
thanks!

ArcGIS app

I couldn't find a thread where anyone has mentioned this so I thought I'd mention this app. It's ArcGIS from ESRI and it is in the Marketplace (FREE!). It might be getting overlooked because people think they need to know GIS to use it which is not the case. Within the program there are dozens of base maps to choose from including a world road map. It doesn't have turn by turn directions but it does allow you to center your location and have the map scroll under you while driving. The world map has fairly good detail. Give it a try, I think you'll be surprised at all the information you will have access to with the various base maps.
I don't have any affiliation with the developer except I am a user of their desktop software.
Interesting, will show this to my girlfriend. She uses the desktop software for school, might have interesting integration capabilities.
Just for anyone who reads this, there is now a Turn-By-Turn navigation app which uses this API.
The thread is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959087
I loaded the A to B navigation yesterday and it's got to be one of the top 5 free apps out there.
One thing I like about the Arcmap app I originally posted about is the ability to have useful maps saved in the favorites folder and switch between them within the program. It can go from a road map to a weather map and back again with just a few button pushes.
that's really amazing
just curious if it would have an integration problem with a laptop?

MANGO will turn your search button/key to a dedicated shortcut to a webpage.

Yes guys, Ripley's believe it or not, no matter how irrational it may sound, but that super-responsive touch sensitive search key, a physical dedicated key on the front of your phone which hundreds of people are looking for a way to disable or stop directing to bing, which you can still use to search within MP, zune, people hub and other places.. will be turned to a shorcut to the webpage : www.bing.com .. nothing more than that.
You like it or not, microsont dosent give a damn. Remind me when they force IE and WML on Windows desktop. Deja vu.

Well, he has a point, the button was quite useful within some of the built in apps.
Edit: but actually it's a little more than just a shortcut - Bing Vision etc is awesome
You will have a search button in applications where relevant.
While I do miss hitting the search key to in marketplace to search, I like Bing the way it is now. Its no longer anything but a direct way to access bing and related services like bing vision, audio and local scout.

ehh really liked that i could use it in IE to quickly go to the google home page back in nodo, but the new bing thing is pretty cool, would still rather use google though
It was inconsistent behavior. I'm glad they changed it.
You never knew which apps would have their built-in search triggered by the search button and which ones would just let you go to Bing, which took you out of your application.
Now the search button will always go to Bing and its enhanced features like Local Scout, Bing Vision, Bing Music and of course Bing search (and voice search)
troll...
Then answer me, if they gonna do that, why the hell do they have to build up Bing Vision/ Bing Integrated System in Windows Phone and then hide it away without being used?
I know they aren't crazy enough or have much free time and pea-brain to do that.

This.
And as the OS becomes more popular, there were be registry changes/tweaks/etc that will allow you to change how that button operates, and where it takes you. But this implementation makes the most sense for the standard user.

Have you ever tried bing.com search outside USA?
I am sick of that key and want to cut open my phone and disconnect all lines that goes to that button.
Being ironic isn't troll. That's true.
I prefer a SEARCH button then a BING button. Thank you.
I agree that they should give people the option to change that button to a search engine of their choice.. but I much prefer the new consistent behavior over the old guessing game until they decide to provide the option.
Just allow us to associate our Bing searches on our phones to our Bing Rewards and we will call it a wash.
its a bug, i had it too, if your search button opens ie9 @bing.com instead of the bing app then you should reinstall mango..
another ridiculous complaint. seems to be more of these threads than normal. I happen to like the Bing search button. gives me easy access to it advanced features, now if I hear a song on tv or in the wild and want to know what it is, I don't have to back out of the app im in first in order to goto it. saves alot of time. another thing I like is that if ur in IE and u highlight a word and press that button it will input that as a search term. don't see google search on Android doing anything like that. google search is going down!
You do realize that Microsoft has implanted many soft buttons to address this issue? Now the Search button behavior is always consistence.
If you don't use Bing, don't use the search button. Problem solved.

Exactly. Before Mango, you had no idea what would happen if you pressed the Search button.
Before Mango, was the search button available to 3rd party developers to use in their apps? In other words, could they listen for the button event, and then do something within the app, as opposed to just passing it on to the OS?
If so, then the new behavior is kind of disappointing, as it limits what app developers can do. If not, then it really makes no huge difference, since only core OS elements (such as the marketplace) could access the button anyway, and they probably have replaced that functionality with an in-app search button if one is needed.
No it wasn't available to developers.

Even if developers had access to the button, it's just not consistent to have a hardware button with two different functions, depending on the app and/or situation (and with no indicator specifying which function was avaliable).
