changing htc home weather xml file in schap's rom - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

hi, im running schap's awesome (big thank you) 3.30 rom and i cannot overwrite the original htc weather *xml file in windows
i've tried disabling the home plugin, ive tried through activesync, through file explorer, ive even done a hard reset but with no luck
ive searched for this (i know people always say this) but could only find how to change the xml file,no one seemed to be suffering from this problem
i could change the xml file with ease in black majik rom
any helpwould be appreciated
many thanks

solution, i guess...
when you start working witk .xml file in windows, first change the file attribute and uncheck the box "read only". make the changes, save the file and then check the attribute again make the file "read only" again. i hope it works. it worked for me...

The weather XML file is in ROM, you can't overwrite ROM files with File Explorer. For that you need to replace the file using another software like Resco Explorer, and disable the Home plugin before doing it, to have more chances that it works.

How do you change it in Black Majik? Any iinput would be appreciated!

Black 3.01-How to change Dialer Background ?

I am trying to change black 3.01 Dialer Background bmp file to something else
I think this is the file in the windows dir " Bkgnd_Port.BMP" I can't overwire it as because it is in ROM and locked is there any way I can change it ??
thanks
Resco or another 3rd party explorer app will do it, I highly recommend resco.
ActiveSync used to be able to do it also, but not sure about current versions.
you can overwrite it, just copy your new file named exactly the same into the windows dir. You will need to reboot your phone for the image to change.
I just tested this and I know it works
edit: activesyn 4.5 worked as well.
Does anyone have the WM6 default dialer files?
I have bmp files
I have bmp files if you want
I think because I use vista , that's why I could not do it

Not sure if Vista works, guess you will need to install a third party app on your phone like Resco.
nevermind.
thanks
thank you for help
it worked wit Resco Explorer

How to change start menu button image on wm6.1?

Hey! Can I change my start menu button image on wm6.1? I mean is there this image exist somewhere in the windows folder so I can replace it like the boot screen? (without any 3rd party apps like wisbar)
Thank you!
TKL
any idea?
2 ways useing the program called wisbar google it
or make your own rom from scratch and hack some dll which include the image you can also find a description somewhere in the forum which dll not for most peoples though
but which dll..I'm gonna search the forum for this. Thank you!

i can't say for sure but i think its the shellres.dll file that has the image in it
Where is shellres.dll located?? I can't find it.
Edit: I found it And how can I replace the image in the dll? I can't even copy it out from the windows folder... I tried with total commander but no luck :S
as i said you have to cook your own rom from scratch on the computer to get the dll into it
pretty much what all the people who make roms in this forum does so as i said it's not something for the most users
you can prob read about how start learning to cook roms in the wiki pages of your device
you can do this without cooking it into the rom. With WM6 the file is shellres.96.dll. Use reshacker to replace icon number 288, then you must "sign" the DLL using this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1262575&postcount=1
finally, copy it into the windows folder (you may have to rename the old one first)
soft reset and you should be good to go!
since you're having problems copying it I've attached a copy
BTW if you do this and it screws up your title bar icons it probably means that WM6.1 uses a different DLL. To fix it just delete or rename the DLL and reset.
i looked for this file on my wing (it has wm6) and there is a file named shellresapps.96.dll, so i am sure that it's probably not the same file....and it will not allow me to copy it to my pc so i can look inside of it, any ideas?
More help

more file selection problem in file explorer?

I found that some wm6.1 rom's "File Explorer" didn't supported multiple file selection in one time, unlike wm5 or wm6, i can select more file together in one time (using file explorer) to copy and paste it to other folder! Does anyone know how to solve or fix this problem, or maybe change some value by using register editor? thank you for fixing this issue!

How do I overwrite a file "in ROM memory"?

There are a number of TP2 tweaks which require the editing or replacement of files - for example, there is supposedly a way of increasing the loudspeaker volume which involves replacing a file called AudioPara3.csv with an edited version. This file sits in the Windows folder.
I'm using Resco File Explorer on my TP2, with the corresponding shell extensions installed on my desktop Windows, but nothing I do will allow me to edit that file. Trying to overwrite it (by dragging the copy into the appropriate Explorer window on my desktop PC) fails, telling me that I don't have the necessary permissions. If I look at the file properties on my TP2, it's set to read-only. If I try clearing the read-only checkbox this looks as if it's going to work, but actually if I go back into properties again, it's still set to read-only. There's another (disabled) checkbox in the properties labeled "ROM" which is ticked - I assume it's this that is causing the problem.
I've also tried renaming the file - that, again, appears to work but what it actually does is to create a duplicate of the file with the new name while leaving the old file intact.
There must presumably be a way of overwriting this file, otherwise no one would have been able to install the tweak!
I have a similar problem with the weather database file - so I can't add in extra locations.
What am I missing?
Try doing it on the TP2 itself with Resco File Explorer. I do not have any problem so far. Not too sure when you use it on the desktop.

Several options in Resco File Explorer failed, but using the Copy To option worked, for some reason.
Don't think it actually made the speakers any louder, though.
You can also try Total Commander (not like it'll make the speakers louder, but for future reference).
Total Commander will work OR you can rename the original file, then copy the new one in.
I recommend (strongly!) the former since if you screw up you can fix it without a hard reset!
What is wrong with this file?
Hello,
I'd like to ask for some expert help.
I finally managed to edit an EXE file from Windows - just translating Japanese text to English. I used the MEditor suite. After saving, I "dropped" the file onto the SignCode.exe as per instructions.
When I transferred the file to its original location and overwrote the original one, I get:
"Cannot open... A critical component is either missing or cannot start because program memory is unavailable...."
I am sure I didn't change anything else but texts. So what could be wrong?
I am attaching the two files - the original and the edited - for someone to please look at them and let me know if there's anything I can do. This is Sharp's Barcode Reader.exe
Thanks!

[Q] How To Make a .txt file?

I tried searching and didnt find what I was looking for
Can someone explain how to make a .txt file? I was wanting to modify my power widgets in MikFroyo and I am lost as to what program to use to make it. Thanks for the help
You can use any word processor, the easiest one is probably notepad or wordpad. When you save the file make sure to select .txt as the file type
If you mean on your phone, get es file explorer from the market. Then you just hit: menu new and name it with a .txt at the end of the file name
Ok, so I got how to make the .txt file but using ES file explorer it wont let me paste/move it into the system>customize directory... It just says "copy failed"...
Also, the permission set on the existing widget.txt file are set to read only so I cant just modify that one...
I got it to copy one time and upon reboot the phone stuck at the white HTC EVO screen.. had to android back to pre-messed up copied file...
Anybody already done this and know what I'm missing?
The reason it is not copying is because the system is mounted read only.you can try going into settings in es and go to root options at the bottom. Those options don't work on all roms but you can check it out and see. Mount as read write and then you should be able to copy to system

Alright, so I used the "experimental" feature to copy the .txt file into the system>customize directory and it actually worked, I have my power widgets the way I want them now..
But, I tried it again a little bit ago and ES file Exlp wouldnt let me use that feature... It kept saying that "mounting failed, this feature wont work on your phone."... Any idea what's up with that?
thanks for the help BTW
