Advice - Best Radio for Vodafone UK & DE? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

I have a very old radio installed in my Tytn and would like to upgrade it to a good version that works well both in UK and Germany on Vodafone.
I would be happy if anyone could suggest a version based on their experience in preferably both countries.
I'm using the latest DOPOD repackaged ROM from MrVanx.

Bump the thread for you.
I'm with Vodafone NZ and I'm running radio version 1.47.00.10. At home and work I'm only getting two bars for the signal. Sometimes, I'm getting no service.
Does anyone know which radio version works best with Vodafone?

About the best thing you can do is to flash them and see which one works best for you.

I'm on UK Vodafone - using radio 1.47.00.10 for 3 days now - no problems noticed. I have not done any subjective tests to see whether reception is better or worse but it certainly hasn't screwed up big time!

Radio upgrade to 1.48?
I have installed 1.48 and it appears to fix the bug I had coming out of Flight mode, but then I realised 1.48 appears to be used mostly by USA users.
I wonder if I should go down to 1.47 for use in Europe to be safe?

I am in Germany and the 1.48 works great.

Thanks
I'll stay with 1.48 for now, it seems to work fine on normal calls and I don't use 3G or anything fancy.
Will be trying the new Sleuth or Black Satin soon though ;-)

I'm using 1.48 with T-Mobile Uk, it's fine . My 3G reception has greatly improved from 1.04 .

iMate PDA2K - need help with some issues

I recently got an imate PDA2k from my dad...and I absolutely love this thing! It came unlocked and after doing a lot of reading on here, I found out that the ROM was an older version......so I upgraded to the latest one available from clubimate's site.....v1.40 with the 1.12 radio ROM.
Although it seems to be working better today, initially I had a lot of problems with the phone side of the BA....not enough signal bars in places where I usually used to get decent strength....and in my old Nokia 6600, we could use the GPRS from Tmobile to surf on WAP sites. Sorry if this sounds dumb but can I not do that with the BA using the Tzones? or do I HAVE to have the internet plan to be able to even go to the WAP sites? The other problem is that my GPRS never connects...only very very infrequently, and even then, like mentioned earlier, I can't do any surfing.....
I also am desperately looking for any operator specific settings for Tmobile USA which might help the BA work more efficiently.
Lastly, will upgrading my Radio ROM to the 1.13 version help improve my signal strength/reception?
Appreciate any help/suggestions.

Not sure about the signal strength, but it improves the call quality

Which Radio works best where you are?

With all the problems people have been having with WM6 and Radio, I thought it would be constructive if we could get a breakdown of the best Radios depending on location to save further problems.
I'm on O2 in Uk and on 1.13 supplied with Jwrights 06 ROM, works great, no problems although I haven't tested pushmail yet.
If all of you who are happy with your Radio please post your ROM and location, maybe we can create a list from the findings and post it as a sticky.
Please post the following:
1. Location
2. Network provider
3. Radio version
4. OS ROM version

I dont think this excercise is gonna work. This list will carry on and on and the developers cannot make special roms to suit the whims and fancies of all[Excuse my saying this]. I think some problems are network related in respective countries.
Even with other branded phones sometimes one looses signals or call is missed which is due to congestion and spectrum related.
Th4 I suggest unless its a major radio problem stick to what you have with the rom.
As for the pushmail/radio equation the developers will look into for a solution .

Well.... it might help newbies figure out which RadioROM to go for. I mean, I spent a ****load amount of time figuring out if I should have upgraded from RadioROM 1.09 to 1.13! The ChangeLog for the RadioROM does not exist and so people just want to know if they should risk breaking something which already works for them, or not. I am personally hoping for this thread to evolve into a ChangeLog for the RadioROM.
RadioROM 1.09 works absolutely perfectly in Sweden and in Australia for GSM networks only - I did not try it with a 3G network since I don't have a 3G account.
RadioROM 1.13 right is working perfectly in Australia - with some degree of surprise! I have a normal GSM SIM card but can piggyback on the 3G network of the same opeator I have a normal GSM account with. I could not do this with RadioROM 1.09. This theoretically means that with RadioROM 1.13 - the chances of you encountering a weak signal is lower than if you were using RadioROM 1.09. The reason is because if your GSM signal is weak, the Universal would switch to the 3G signal if its available and also if its stronger than the GSM signal. For me, probing the advantages/disadvantages of RadioROM 1.13 over 1.09 is still a work in progress. I am not willing to spread my observation about this just yet because I have reason to believe that the Universal has an in-built preference to 3G signals over GSM signals - regardless of the strength of each signal.
I can't wait to go back to Sweden and see if RadioROM 1.13 behaves in the same way with my network operator over there.
I have used 1.09, 1.13, 1.14 & probably more with all the various flavours of ROMs released here on the forums - none are satisfactory & none perform as well as a standard phone.
I have had calls dropped on all versions whether on 2G or 3G.
The biggest problem I have had is with email. I leave Puch mail turned on & travel; during the travel the signla may be lost or change from 2 to 3G. Sooner or later the email states that it can't get at the server & either needs the phone turning off (flight mode) or a reset. This has been common on AKU2, AKU3.2 & 3.5 and WM6, so I am assuming a Radio related issue. I have also tried it on two XDAs to rule out h/w faults.
Could be O2 though I have no evidence & others are happy with O2
Anyway:
O2
South East England (inc London)
XDA Exec
ROMs - most release in last 6 months
Radio - 1.09 & above (happy with none).
Radio 1.12.00
There is [New..?] Radio 1.12.00, does anyone will try...?

Glad to bring some joy to the world !!
I am getting on a lot better with the O2 release ROM, the O2 extended ROM & Radio 1.09 on one of my XDAs. Seems to pick up calls 100% & push email has not dropped after 2 days.
I am not optimistic about having a 100% reliable WM6 / Radio solution for the Universal unless one of the operators produces it (& even then not so sure). I don't want a Blackberry, I like my Exec a lot, what I do want is more reliability & if that means using the older OS then so be it. I am missing the better Terminal Services Client but little else in WM6 is "required" for me.
I do like your work though & it is fun testing it on my other XDA.
so far we need to see more comments of radio 1.09 with wm6. Anyone tested that yet? we have one case of testing so far claiming problems only with phone alarm.

I uploaded to the ftp, and I have it running on my UNI. According to the people I phone with, the voice quality is much better in comparison to 1.13 and 1.14.10.
It's from T-Mobile. It was embedded in the Blackberry 2.1.2.31 dualapn package.

Best Radio ROM for T-Mobile UK

Hi, What is the best Radio ROM for my Vario II which curently has
Pro black 2.5
SPL 2.10 opli v7
Radio ROM 1.40
I use T-Mobile UK.
I don't think the signal quality is very good on 1.40 as I was on the phone and my wife said her voice was echoing...? I was using my bluetooth headset...but it never happened before the upgrade..? Before 1.40 I had 1.41 and I couldn't even connect to the network
Also, why does the start bar sometimes hide....? and how can I add a running programs shortcut on the bottom like I had on WM5..I can't seem to do it....?
Sorry for sounding like a newbie..I've looked in the WIKI but can't find it
I had some problems with 1.40, ranging from no radio at all to bricking the device.
What did you settle on in the end? I'm also on T-Mobile UK.

I'm still on the 1.40 and it works ok actually but I think it could be better.
I have had no problems so far with 1.40 radio and lvsw 23/4.
Hi,
I was using 1.40.30.00 and found it to be a great improvement over the other radio's
I mainly use my phone in West London and Central London.
I have now moved to 1.41.00.10 and will test it performance over the next few days.
Thanks
Msuk
Hi,
Radio 1.40.30.00 caused my battery to drain very fast. Since updating to version 1.41.00.10 I have had no problems.
I tried 1.41 but found it to be a bit less stable than 1.40 which I have gone back to. That seems to be about the best in my experience but they all have an issue with dropping calls/being unable to make receive calls if the phone is having problems switching back and forth between GSM/3G.
I found 1.40 my signal strength was very weak, compared to previous version i'd used, especially 1.38.
But i have just installed 1.41 and it seems better again, i'm going to stick with this for a while and see how i get on.
ps. i'm not sure the WM6 forum is the best place to be discussing radios
Thats wierd. I have the same setup as some of you guys and when I put 1.41 in my network didn't come at all. I don't really want to try it again. But i'm thinking if I should
I am using 1.38.30.1 - it feels much better than 1.40.. in terms of battery life and reception is stronger than my experience with all the other radios tried. Speed seems fine, HSDPA works fine. However I stay mostly on GSM to save battery due to poor reception at home and switch to 3G/ HSDPA only when really needed.
T-Mobile UK and 3G problems
Guys, please note that if you have problems with 3G coverage - for example missed calls or problems with making calls - it is probably network's fault, not necessarily Radio ROM. I was experiencing such problems while using original T-Mobile's WM5 ROM. People couldn't reach me while I've had full 3G coverage in Central London, and I also couldn't place any call at all. Switching manually to GSM-only mode solved all problems. I've complained to CS about that, they admitted to have some 3G issues, and gave £25 discount of my bill. Also, friend of mine having Nokia N70 also reported similar problems with 3G, he switched to GSM-only and is far more happy now.
Anyway, I was using 1.38 Radio for about 2 weeks with no problems whatsoever. Since yesterday I have 1.41 - so far, so good.
I agree. Switching manually to GSM used to solve the problem. In some areas it looked like GSM and 3G were changing every 2 seconds. But I do need 3G for fast browsing.
It may be network problems but you'd expect a radio to be able to switch seamlessly without impact the voice service though wouldn't you.

t-mobile UK radio trouble

I'm on radio 1.47 with black satin on tmob UK.
My mobile phone is useless when i speak to people all i can hear is a lot of crackle interspersed with words! I think they can here me.
Where can i find a radio to downgrade to and which is best for tmob uk?

No joy...
I have tried Black Satin on my phone and had no reception problems.
I have just tried my current set up (see sig.) using my T-Mob sim...I did not have any problems with reception.
There is the 1.48 radio from the AT&T rom listed in WIKI perhaps that will help.

bb,
I am on T-Mobile UK with the radio version 1.47 and have no problems at all. I am not sure that there was any advantage with the move to this radio from 1.43 and I have seen others indicate that 1.43 was a radio optimised for the UK so it might be worth changing to that.
All the radios are on this site here: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_ExtractedRadioRoms. You will also find links to the posts related to them so it may be worth a read. However, given your problem (which seems strange from what I have read and seen myself) I'd recommend checking you have HardSPL first then giving 1.43 a go. The highest numbers are certainly not always the best for everyone.
Good luck

Try using radio 1.48, Im on t-mobile UK and using Schaps lastest 3.57a ROM with radio 1.48 its brilliant, no problems what so ever.

Radio 1.47+Black Satin+T-Mobile UK = perfect for me.
i tried radio 1.47 and hardly got any signal so now using 1.43 wich is very good, did try 1.48 before and seemed very good holds on to 3g more than 1.43 i think so i'm going to go back to 1.48 very soon.

So many of use are in doubt about the best radio - now if only we had a tool that monitored actual radio performance over a day or week of normal activity that could provide some form of objective assessment of performance of one radio and circumstances against another.
I find that for every 10 people in favour of a particular radio there are likely to be 10 more that think it is poor. Clearly locality (country/band/Edge/GPRS and 3G/HSDPA are all factors but? Can anyone create a capability to record forum user input for any given radio that also took account of location and provider - then we might more clearly see trends.
It is all too easy to be tempted by the latest radio and sometimes our assessments might well be clouded by anticipation rather than reality. I find that the apparent performance of the T-Mobile network is variable for even a given static location - that makes it difficult to make a sound judgement.
Ho hum... Shall I go back to 1.43 or give 1.48 a try?
I tried using 1.4.7 with Black Majic but it just didn't work that well.. I could here the other person perfectly however they could not hear a word I said.. I've upgraded to 1.48 and Black Satin and the reception is perfect (best yet) on T-Mobile UK.. only problem now is the wifi.
I've got a wireless N network and the signal in the house is full strength when connected however I have to manually click connect everytime using the option in the network settings.. The network is only using Mac Filtering so not sure what the problem is. I''ve tried to indicate that it is a hidden network but without joy. Anybody have any ideas?
1.46 is good for me (batt life is good too)
1.47 had issues,
Would it be possible to give your locations were you are experiancing these radio issues or bad call qaulity iusses please

Hi
Also T-Mobile UK - i have had problems with all custom roms - seems fine for a while then data dies requiring a reboot.
This changed with the new dopod release and 1.47.10 radio, then the latest sleuth 3.1 dev rom which is faultless for me.
I think the problem varies dependant on where in the uk you are, the sort of coverage you get - for the record im in Durham.
Steveapp
I'm in Cardiff, but I had issues in all South Wales with custom roms. The only one that worked fine with me is Orange 1.38.00.01 (I didn't even feel the need to try 1.48)

agreed, but I'm still running an older radio and its working fine also. The Dopod rom is the nuts.
Neil.
Hi All
Im on Tmob UK and live in the Southampton area. I get a good signal in the area and frankly all the ater radios I have tried work ok. My particular problem is in builbding coverage in that I work in a large communications centre and inside the signal is poor to non existant. This is where I find the difference shows in the roms and the best for me is 1.27. It is one of the few roms that seems to reliably deal with a loss of signal and then reattaching the data connection after a period with no signal. It also seems to have the best poor signal acquisition.
Ive tried them all and have always gone back to 1.27, no others have been better and most have been worse.

Best Radio for South Africa ?

Hi there
I am sure there are other South Africans here as well, I would like some feedback in terms of which radio rom(s) is best (used by majority) in terms of battery life and compatibility with local networks.
Hi BladeStorm,
I am on radio version 1.54.30.10 and on Mtn. The signal is great!
The battery life is also very good on my iMate jasjam running wm6.1.
Hope this helps.
Regards.
I'm also currently running 1.54.30.10. Works well except for 3G/HSDPA (dropped calls, a second or two of muted call at irregular intervals. I'm on Vodacom.
more current Radio version
Hi, I'm using radio version 1.56.70.11 on my jasjam on the vodacom network.
Great coverage in my area though, no problems with data or voice and no hard resets
how bout on south east asian(indonesia)? which Radio version is the best? thanks b4
yeah....i'm with xooku on this one....also on Vodacom in SA and since i've loaded 1.56.70.11 i havent looked back...
Normally the Radio of the last original shipped ROM of your provider is the best.
Radio Rom 1.56.70.11
Hey guys,
I am also using radio rom version 1.56.70.11.
I am on Mtn here in SA and i must say i have noticed a slight improvement over 1.54.30.10 with signal and battery life.
