Hi all,
this is my first post on this site. I was planning on getting an XDA orbit through o2 this week as an upgrade to my current contract. This would be my first PDA phone and i was looking forward to it and all the possiblities it includes. However after reading the posts on here i'm having second thoughts. This is mainly down to the MicroSD memory corruption issue. First of all is the likely to happen to my orbit if i get one, will there be a fix for it and is it a big enough problem for me not to bother and look at an alternative instead. Also does anybody use there PDA though a mac instead of a PC and does it cause many compatibility issues?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance
James

Much as I admire the technology and form factor of the Orbit, I certainly could not advise you to get one until the MicroSD issue has been resolved.
Can you really afford to have a device which functions as your telephone/calendar/to do list/phone book/navigation device, but which you never know whether it will be OK or corrupted when you need to use it? Read through the (> 46 page long) thread here and take a guess on how likely you are to experience this problem.
HTC were supposed to be developing a fix, but it has been a long time now and nothing has been forthcoming. There has also been speculation that WM6 will be provided free of charge to owners, but this is a HTC decision not an O2 one. If you buy an O2 branded Orbit, you will need to wait until O2 decide whether they will make WM6 available. If they do, it may or may not be a chargeable upgrade, and there will certainly be a further delay while they apply the O2 customisations to the build.
Hi
I have had my Orbit for around 4 months now. I read the tread mentioned above and did worry about card corruption. So far it has only happened to me once (touch wood) but I had synced my whole SD card to my pc, so all i needed to do was reformat it using either my phone or a card reader an copy all the data back again, worked a treat.
have a look for 'Mob Sync' i got a free version from http://www.xda-orbit.com/
Apart from the card issue I have been really happy with mine.
I strongly recommend you to wait with final decision until Windows Mobile 6 for this device. I bought HTC Artemis (unbranded) and I regularly read HTC's answers that they are working on SD card problem issue. If this bug will exist in HTC P3300 with WM6 I will return device. It's not possible to use this as "Personal Digital Assistant" when your data are gone from time to time.
@richiev4
I'm happy with all that great features of Artemis too and I wish you luck with your device, but remember that data corruption problem occurs randomly. My device worked flawlessly 2 weeks, other time 3 hours so you never know.
So stay tuned and save your money if you can...
Cheers
I was in that delimma 2 weeks ago, saw extensive support for P3300 with the HTC itself committing to releasing the WM6 ROM's as well for it, so I ended up getting the P3300

Well that's a level of commitment that I certainly haven't seen from HTC! They have known about the Data Card Corruption issue for quite a long time now, and they still haven't actually done anything about it.
Also, the original question was about getting an O2 Orbit, not a HTC P3300. Even if HTC do release a WM6 ROM, there is no guarantee that it will actually fix the data corruption problem or that O2 will decide to release it. And even if O2 do decide to release it, there is no guarantee that it will be free of charge to their customers. Plus there would be (another) delay while they add the O2 customizations.
The lifetime of a Smartphone or PDA is probably below 1 year now. Why spend money on a device that you cannot rely on, in the hope that there might be a fix some time in the future? If I knew then what I know now, I would not have bought my Orbit.
Sadly, in Canada these phones are not available to buy thru a contract, you have to buy them unlocked and at full price.
I know the Dash doesn't support 4GB cards... However, anyone find a way around it? Shouldn't it be software based? My brother gave me a 4GB card that wasn't compatible with his Samsung phone, so I figured I'd try to get it to work.
Good luck -- T-Mobile attributes the endless-reboot-looping issue to using cards over 1GB.

i am using a 2 gig with my tmobile dash, and have no problems at all.. like the 1st post, i would love to see a 4gig card work.. good luck!
I use a 2 gig card as well, but had that endless rebooting issue with WM6 & 5 on my Dash. Fortunately, holding the END key during the bootup would jump-start the device; but that doesn't work for everyone. When I contacted T-Mobile support about it, they said they provide support for the device with a 1 gig card, and the endless reboot was a known issue with anything larger the 1 gig. Didn't stop me though FYI -- I've not run into the booting issue since upgrading my device to the HTC WM6 ROM -- though now that I've typed that, it'll probably start happening

i always though the device support was 2 gig.. but oh well.. yeah i am still using t-mobile rom w/wm6 when it was 1st released. (as we speak) i am getting ready too upgrade to the htc rom.. so i wonder if the device will handle a 4gig when using htc rom?
I haven't tried it so I don't know how the phone would handle it, but could you partition it into 2 2g or 4 1g parts?

I've been using 2GB card since day one ( Rogers S621 )
gone from original carrier's WM5 ROM -->> HTC generic WM5 -->> T-Mobile WM6 -->> HTC Generic WM6 ...etc
no problem whatsoever
my advice to those who have problem is:
When upgrade/downgrading ROMs ... take out the SD card & the SIM card altogether ...
leaving it in during the ROM up/down seems to be the cause for the endless boot
Nice try at a guess... but... nope. Had the problem from day 1 with the shipping ROM. This issue isn't always identical for everyone, and some don't run into it at all. Congratulations -- you're one of the lucky ones -- but thanks anyway for sharing your story

chaznet, i just finally made the switch to the ship rom (htc) and i havent seen any reboots.. i installed programs from the card and use it to use customize ringer for contacts... like the other poster said.. might try and take out sim and sd cardd..
Been there, done that... I'm not currently experiencing the issue, but, when I was removing either the SIM card or the SD card had no effect. As I said, pressing the END key during bootup got my device going. This along with the removing the cards, are solutions that work for some users and not others.
The 'endless-reboot' issue has been extensively covered in a dedicated topic, should you wish further clarification do a search and read all about it -- no need to repeat it all here

yes I have read the topic posted from others ... many things could be the culprit ... BUT DEFINITELY NOT BECAUSE OF THE SD CARD BEING OVER 1GB SIZE !! like you've indicated to be !!
heck !! even you yourself indicated what's causing the problem here ... not because of the SD card being larger then 1 GB !!

remove both altogether ... not just either/or
I've no idea what really causes it, that's just what T-Mobile support said, and you can never tell if they're feeding you a story or not. Thanks for your input though

I used to get the random shutdowns and it turned out it was the original battery that came with my T-Mobile Dash. When I switched to the 1200mAh battery I have had no problems whatsoever. I have, since day one, been using a 2GB card, so it can't be the culprit.
4GB cards are SDHC, not for Excalibur
4-32 GB cards are SDHC, a different, no backwards compatible format.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital_card
Hmmm, that might be the reason then. Thanks. However, as someone here mentioned; is there anyway to format the card into 2 2GBs cards in the compatible format?
Re-read the response, check the Wikipedia link, you'll find the answer has already been provided...

I can't see why not ???
when you plug your card into a reader ( might need an adapter for micro -->> SD size ..etc ). your card is read by the desktop as a separate drive .... use a 3rd party partition program ( partition magic ? ) and do it.
feasible in theory
I don't have a 4GB card to play around ... using 2GB is fine here
Hello,
I have recently purchased a SPV M5000 in used condition and I was able to update the ROM to WM6 however, the phone aspect of this device seems to be working poorly just like it did with WM5 (I thought the update would fix it). It often disconnects and or does not recognize the SIM card’s presence. Although when it connects it works fine but the connection only last a short while, after which point it disconnects and does not recognize the SIM card or searches for service a long time…
I have read through this forum as much as I could but my lack of knowledge in this area prevents me from making much sense of this. Could you ladies and gentlemen lend me a hand in fixing this issue?
Thank you!
i have a m5000 and have NEVER had any of the above problems
My Radio version is 1.13.00, perhaps updating it to a higher version can solve the problem? Can someone help me in this department? which version would it be best for me to try, where can I get it and how to install it? If anyone has the time to help me and break it down for me I would apreciate it.
Thank you.

can i ask u the obvious? have u put the sim in correctly and locked it in? also try locking the battery, sounds like you might have a wonky sim holder?
everything is locked and securely fastened.. I doubt it's the sim card holder.
Hello Friends,
I purchased ASUS P835 in Jan'2010 in India itself. Since then I have been facing many issues and the PDA seems to loose its control once we use 3G SIM card.
It does not hold up the network in good network areas also, and almost all the time, whenever it used to make a data-connection, it got restarted.
Upon complaining, I got the cell-phone replacement.
But with new handset also I face the same issues. Although few problems are not there in the new one, but still the loose network retention and restart on data-connection still prevails.
I understand that this model as a whole is itself faulty.
Can you guys please provide me with some help on this ?
Kindly share, if there is any upgrade or patch available for this.
Also, let me know with your opinions, and recommendations for this cell-phone.
Any help will be much appreciable.
Thanks and regards,
Rohan

Hey guys,
received my phone with replaced screen. All working fine now HOWEVER got a one silly question, is it possible that the company that did it inserted into the device some kind of tracking device or some tools that could hack my phone/sim card etc? I know its silly but just wondering, and please be serious
Thanks

Why would you send it off to them if you don't trust them....
In theory they could have done but the likelyhood is probably not.
