Should I Get An Orbit - P3300, MDA Compact III General

Hi all,
this is my first post on this site. I was planning on getting an XDA orbit through o2 this week as an upgrade to my current contract. This would be my first PDA phone and i was looking forward to it and all the possiblities it includes. However after reading the posts on here i'm having second thoughts. This is mainly down to the MicroSD memory corruption issue. First of all is the likely to happen to my orbit if i get one, will there be a fix for it and is it a big enough problem for me not to bother and look at an alternative instead. Also does anybody use there PDA though a mac instead of a PC and does it cause many compatibility issues?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance
James

Much as I admire the technology and form factor of the Orbit, I certainly could not advise you to get one until the MicroSD issue has been resolved.
Can you really afford to have a device which functions as your telephone/calendar/to do list/phone book/navigation device, but which you never know whether it will be OK or corrupted when you need to use it? Read through the (> 46 page long) thread here and take a guess on how likely you are to experience this problem.
HTC were supposed to be developing a fix, but it has been a long time now and nothing has been forthcoming. There has also been speculation that WM6 will be provided free of charge to owners, but this is a HTC decision not an O2 one. If you buy an O2 branded Orbit, you will need to wait until O2 decide whether they will make WM6 available. If they do, it may or may not be a chargeable upgrade, and there will certainly be a further delay while they apply the O2 customisations to the build.

Hi
I have had my Orbit for around 4 months now. I read the tread mentioned above and did worry about card corruption. So far it has only happened to me once (touch wood) but I had synced my whole SD card to my pc, so all i needed to do was reformat it using either my phone or a card reader an copy all the data back again, worked a treat.
have a look for 'Mob Sync' i got a free version from http://www.xda-orbit.com/
Apart from the card issue I have been really happy with mine.

I strongly recommend you to wait with final decision until Windows Mobile 6 for this device. I bought HTC Artemis (unbranded) and I regularly read HTC's answers that they are working on SD card problem issue. If this bug will exist in HTC P3300 with WM6 I will return device. It's not possible to use this as "Personal Digital Assistant" when your data are gone from time to time.
@richiev4
I'm happy with all that great features of Artemis too and I wish you luck with your device, but remember that data corruption problem occurs randomly. My device worked flawlessly 2 weeks, other time 3 hours so you never know.
So stay tuned and save your money if you can...
Cheers

I was in that delimma 2 weeks ago, saw extensive support for P3300 with the HTC itself committing to releasing the WM6 ROM's as well for it, so I ended up getting the P3300

Well that's a level of commitment that I certainly haven't seen from HTC! They have known about the Data Card Corruption issue for quite a long time now, and they still haven't actually done anything about it.
Also, the original question was about getting an O2 Orbit, not a HTC P3300. Even if HTC do release a WM6 ROM, there is no guarantee that it will actually fix the data corruption problem or that O2 will decide to release it. And even if O2 do decide to release it, there is no guarantee that it will be free of charge to their customers. Plus there would be (another) delay while they add the O2 customizations.
The lifetime of a Smartphone or PDA is probably below 1 year now. Why spend money on a device that you cannot rely on, in the hope that there might be a fix some time in the future? If I knew then what I know now, I would not have bought my Orbit.

Sadly, in Canada these phones are not available to buy thru a contract, you have to buy them unlocked and at full price.

Upgrade phone > TomTom license?

I want to upgrade my XDA2 to a IIs but I don't know whether TomTom will let me do this without buying another copy of the TT software. Has anyone done this before? Would I have to send all my TT CDs back to TT to get them swapped for new, unregistered ones?
As far as I know, my copy of TT (and all the maps I've bought) is registered to my specific XDA2 so it couldn't be re-installed on any new machine that I bought.
Thanks in advance.
PS. What would happen if I lost this XDA2 and got a replacement? Same situation, I guess.
For TomTom 3, you can install to a second alternative device after 7 days has passed from initial install and then a 3rd after 6 months.
So if you have only ever installed to the one device and 7 days has passed you won't have any problem.
You can of course re-install to the same hardware as many times as you wish without affecting the install count.
If you had your hardware stolen or replaced under warranty then TomTom will re-issue a new key if you can provide documentary proof that the hardware was replaced etc.
Having said all that, CeBit starts next week and there 'may' be some news on the TomTom front Registered owners of current versions may want to watch our site for news from Mar 10th.
Thanks for your reply, Darren. I bought TT3 itself from PCWorld so that's no problem. The additional European maps my Dad gave me - he bought them off some dodgy geezer on eBay. All original but seal broken. I guess this geezer will have installed them at least once, knowing that 7 days later I'd be able to install them on another machine and all would be happy. :scratchchin: Let's hope he doesn't install them on another machine in 6 months' time. Best I upgrade my phone nice and quickly! My wife will be pleased... NOT!
It is because of tomtom and their stringent rules that keygens have been created to overcome this problem, why should you be restricted to one or two changes of phone/pda once you have bought the software? I have a genuine copy of tomtom but I use a keygen to get new codes each time I change phones/pda's, otherwise I wouldnt be able to use legitimate software as I need and it saves me having to go through the process of contacting tomtom and being told I cant have another code for 6 months.
Changing units
Hi guys,
I've just done over 8 weeks in 19 countries without my TT BT Nav3 & TT traffic because O2 replaced my unit (because it wouldn't work with TT) unfortunately they classed it as stolen :?: & gave it a new ID, (in any case I have since read in forums that the problem was caused by Chinese made 1gb SD cards  which won't run with TT and freeze everything!)
Decided to wait until I got home, upgraded to an XDA IIi, but, I've tried several uninstall & re-installs but each time it says 'You have not downloaded voice files, so your TT will not work properly'
I now have FOUR 1gb SD cards (bought from aria.com) which seem ok for anything else but no good with TT, Ye Gods!!!!
After problem after problem with TomTom I hope they sort all this out with TT 5!
Who knows, maybe they'll even manage their maps down from the extremely annoying 9 unmarked disks, OOPS! there goes another pig flying over

orange m2000 vs o2 xda iis

Hi all, I've been reading for ages on o2's xda iis or the blue angel and the probs all are having here in the uk but not once have I heard of or seen of anyone having this kind of trouble with the orange m2000. Are there any m2000 owners out there who would like to give some feedback on the issue and let us know if you too are swamped with problems. I personally would like this device to use, but really don't want to go out on a limb when the wind is already blowing. As far as pda's and phones go, I'm not a whiz and certainly don't want to have to pay for something just to have to do a rom update, as well as take things off that shouldn't be there to start with...like the o2 rubbish I keep reading about. I'm thinking I'd be better off with a nokia 6630 or maybe the o2 xda ii i, but then, I have never been fond of nokias, and don't want to use a stylus all the time... the 2s would have been the answer (I think), or it is the only one that's really appealed to me in function and looks...so now I'm wondering what about an orange m2000, unlocked, using on o2...can you get manual settings to surf the net? any problems with the 2000?
I've got the M2000 and it has exactly the same problems as all the other Blue Angel's, it's just less popular (party cause Orange don't tell anyone they sell it).
I'm now waiting for Orange to send me a replacement because mine is fastly becoming unusable. It's fine most of the time (aside from the usual problems), but when it crashes, a soft reset doesn't work and I have to remove the SD and the SIM card for up to an hour before I get get it to work again.
I know other people with M2000's who don't have these problems so I've hopefully just got a dodgy phone.
Edited to add that while the M2000 doesn't look as pretty as the XDAIIs, Orange don't put on any of the O2 extra rubbish that O2 do which is good. And the phone can easily be unlocked so you can use it with anyone.
to be honest the only problems that i've ever had with my IIs were all down to the 02 active stuff. once i got rid of that and upgraded to the latest rom (think they all ship with this now anyway) it's been trouble free
I had and XDA IIs which I purchased only 2 weeks ago and it never worked properly. I never even got round to installing any useful software. Twice it hard reset itself while I was opening pictures to send as MMS’s. And I had to soft reset it at least once every day. I even removed the 02 active crap but it was still unstable. The other thing with the IIs is the screen. WHY CHANGE IT! My old one is great but the new one has an awful rancid look and you can’t see it at a slight angle, you have to look straight at it.
I’ve sent it back now and am going to try the IIi in the hope that the faster processor and bigger memory make the device more stable. I’m back to using my XDAII now which I have no trouble with at all, its just old and a bit broken.
m2000
Hi guys, thanks for the response...think I'm going to go with the nokia 6630 for the pic quality, real player, and 3g connection. Might check out the o2 xda ii i, but really wanted a keypad. However, I've got plenty of time to see if there are any bugs in both. have you guys checked out howardforums.com? there is lots of useful stuff on there too. Also, I'm wondering about the o2 magician or xda mini. they say o2 is not releasing them here but they are supposed to be pretty good. anyone know about those?
Well I have both ( and all other versions of XDA's as well.. as we have lots).
I personally prefer the Orange m2000, as we got a free memory card and none of that god awful O2 active built into the rom. Seriously.. that O2 active is such a negative thing to my users. (wake up O2 - the XDA2s / M2000 is geared towards business users with their own apps. they seriously do not need or want a damned instant install popup spam menu.
XDA 4 / M5000 / HTC Universal wont be availble till end September.. So its a case of waiting.. (mines on preorder )
The O2 Active stuff is V.V.Easy to remove so I wouldn't worry about that to much and just go for the device you like the look of the most and can get the best price on
just bought an orange spv c500 and im well impressed.. a little hard to operate at first because of the buttons.. been used to touch screen for so long ive forgoten what buttons are for but it does everything my XDAII can in a smaller package. still trying to sort out the gprs settings because its an oarange phone but apart from that..... o2 canstick the XDAIIs where the sun dont shine.
btw does anyone know the o2 gprs settings for and orange spv c500?
c500
Hey, why didn't you send me a pm? You're not gonna believe this. Was on ebay the other night and got a c500 myself. Figured why not give it a shot as I'm familiar with the spv, and also know a lot about the e200, but know nothing about the c500. A guy I work with has 2 e200's, 1 has a switchboard problem and the other, is working on a switchboard problem. I figured out the settings for the spv as well as the spv e200.. Have you ever heard of Modaco.com? go there... look for gprs settings repository or something like that. Loads of settings are there...but the catch is, you have to mess around with them and tweak them to make them work, but it can be done. took me 3 weeks one time of thinking, and pulling my hair out...but eventually was accomplished. This guy that has 2, one is on orange and the other is on o2. The c500 might be different, but if you are willing to work on it with me...so am I. I'll have to send the phone to HTC first to get it fixed as it has a cracked screen (lcd) and outer, but apart from that it's perfect. This is strange...but cool. I think....

tytn to spv m3100

Right, well i had enough on my tytn!! Contacted orange and got a new contract and getting an spv m3100 (free).
my question is, have i made the right move? I'm thinking about updating the rom, but will i still have the same issues? ie, not turning back on sometimes after i turn it off? also, text messeges not being sent? I use the black pro rom at the moment. is there a new updated version that most people are happy with? i have insured it with orange, so if it f**cks up on the upgrade or after, i can always "lose" it.
Let me get this right - you had a TyTN and now you have a SPV M3100?
These are the same devices, same hardware.
I guess the problems you are describing are caused by software - not by hardware.
Regarding a new ROM version - have you tried to read this forum? There are plenty out there.
as said its the same device?
tho be its now black than pink
same device, maybe so. but htc seem to suck at customer service. prolly the same with orange, but i'll be insuring the phone.
maybe, my tytn is duff. i had problems from day one but htc did nuttin about it! decided to go back on contract for a couple of reasons. 1 being gprs/g3 is way cheaper, and whats more the device is free!!
anyway, i'll give it a go, and if i'm not happy within 14 days, i'll be sending it back and getting something else, maybe an m700.
cheers anyway
wouldnt it have been worth trying some dif roms on your tytn and see if that solves the problem.
Probably a bit silly taking out a new contract on an old phone that you already have when the tytn 2 is due to be released any day now.
Might be worth a play with your tytn more while you are still in your 14days.
Also if you are porting your pay as you go number across to your contract, and the process has already started then you will loose your number if you give the phone back in 14 days.

all good valid points.
I'm sure orange isn't going to release the new version for a while, but then i really don't know about these things.
I will try a couple more roms (tried 3 already), but to be honest, i really hate the looks of the tytn!! looks fully out dated! it's deffo going on ebay!
i'm not going to port the number over (unless they can do it as a line 2). Also, i am gonna stick with the orange contract, i'll just change devices. i like the m700 (more so if there's a black version).
Thanks for the comments!
Txt messages not being sent is not down to the phone but a network problem. I have no problem with the phone not turning on with the Schaps 3.54 rom so give that a try if you haven't.

SPV M5000 issues with the phone..

Hello,
I have recently purchased a SPV M5000 in used condition and I was able to update the ROM to WM6 however, the phone aspect of this device seems to be working poorly just like it did with WM5 (I thought the update would fix it). It often disconnects and or does not recognize the SIM card’s presence. Although when it connects it works fine but the connection only last a short while, after which point it disconnects and does not recognize the SIM card or searches for service a long time…
I have read through this forum as much as I could but my lack of knowledge in this area prevents me from making much sense of this. Could you ladies and gentlemen lend me a hand in fixing this issue?
Thank you!
i have a m5000 and have NEVER had any of the above problems
My Radio version is 1.13.00, perhaps updating it to a higher version can solve the problem? Can someone help me in this department? which version would it be best for me to try, where can I get it and how to install it? If anyone has the time to help me and break it down for me I would apreciate it.
Thank you.

can i ask u the obvious? have u put the sim in correctly and locked it in? also try locking the battery, sounds like you might have a wonky sim holder?
everything is locked and securely fastened.. I doubt it's the sim card holder.

Buying a Blue Angel today?

Hi, my sister needs a low cost new phone and i've found, on eBay, some Qtek 9090 at 144€.
I know, it's a quite old device, but, viewing the tecnical sheet, it doesn't seems to be so bad... In fact, i'm asking you users, would you buy a Blue Angel today?
Of course i'd upgrade its ROM, it's dangerous?
Now i've got an HTC Diamond, is it really different beethween ARM and Xscale? Does it cause any compatibility issue?
And, important thing, is it strong? She's not very "soft" with phones
i would definetely buy one again, but not for 150eur! 30-60 maybe. on ebay, for 150 you'd get a touch pro or touch diamond in mint condition.
upgrading the rom is not dangerous. many people messed up their phones during upgrading, but there is always a pretty easy way to restore it. no mistake is fatal.

I couldn't find one for lower prices that meets my payments requests...
But this is not a problem
I've seen that flasing is a bit tricky compared to flashing the HTC Diamond, where you can just download the ROM and, if it's for Diamond, you can flash it without problem...
Here there are some IDs to edit before flashing, right?
no, i find the blueangel to be the easiest device to flash, no CID locking, no need for SPL changing... just bootloader, flashing, hard reset, and that is the same procedure for any device, just that the BA does not need to be unlocked before, just the extrom resize, which is not mandatory.

Uh Really?
What about this? It's useless right now? :O
the RUU checks for deviceID and countryID and other IDs, but by using a custom RUU and putting the device into bootloader mode before connecting to the pc, all those id checks are bypassed.
on the wiki page in your link, the topic is finding the correct STOCK rom for your device. but nobody uses stock roms with wm2003se anymore. all the roms offered on this forum work for all blueangel models, no matter if it's a t-mo mda iii or spv m2000 or siemens sx66 or whatever. the only device, that cannot be flashed with blueangel roms, is the harrier, the cdma version of the phone. but since there is no cdma network in europe, there is no chance of getting a harrier, plus, you would recognize a harrier immediately, because it has no sim card slot, because on cdma, that is not needed.
btw the best thing about the blueangel is the community i have a Blueangel, a Universal and a Touch HD and while the other 2 devices' hardware is way superior, their respective sections here on the forum are by far not as good as the blueangel's.

So it's even less dangerous than flashing other devices. Wow, i like it

BA is slow ??? LOL not really it is faster as a Kaiser for example
I should get it today
The 400Mhz CPU is (by frequence) faster than my old Elfin (200Mhz) but it's an XScale based device, so i don't think i can directly compare them... What are the differences beethween XScale and ARM?
I have.. .. alot of devices. I like the blueangel. It's alot better than the newer phones, faster. I'd use a blueangel over any of the newer phones. Hermes was the last good phone put out by HTC.
