syncing with work pc without active sync?? - P3300, MDA Compact III General

Basically my work have said I can not "officailly" sync my T-mobile MDA Compact 3 with outlook as it would breach IT rules. Its a bit weird as I can use USB devices and if they brought it me it would be okay to do it. ITs something to do with security and the rest.
I only want to sync my calener as I am not am my desk much so forget reminders. I don't really want to do it manually every meeting.
I thought about exporting my work calendar to a moemory card, but then how to get it on to my device
Does anyone know of anyway it could be done?
cheers

I havent looked at this too deeply, but it might be of some use.

3 Simple Questions - Please Help!

1. I know I can import Contact information from SIM card to device, but is there any way I can do the reverse since over time contacts changes?
(I have a back-up phone which is nothing more then just a plain ole' Samsung - so if ever I need to switch from my BA device to the phone I have an updated phone book on my SIM card)
2. Recently the battery came off my phone for a few short seconds while in a purse. Upon putting it back on I realized the phone did a hard reset! (I don't know why either!) The purse was practically empty (two wallets and receipts) and had nothing in it that could have started the reset. When I got home and tried to sync, ActiveSync coudln't recognize the phone and wanted to start a new partnership. Anything I can do in the future to prevent this from occuring again - Activesync not recognizing the phone?? I had to delete the partership the computer and start over.
3. In Outlook I have two Contacts list (1 personal and 1 business). I would like to keep them seperate but it seems like Activesync will only sync one contact list at a time. I know I can assign categories and sort them but life is easier keeping them seperate. Any way to do this or a program that wil do this?
THANKS!!!
BUMP!!!
Sorry to do this but some one out there can answer at least one of these questions right???
THANKS!

I have an MDA compact (Magician), and there I can simply mark the contacts I want to copy to the SIM in my list of contacts, then tap-n-hold and select "Save to SIM".

Yes. Make sure that you regularily do backups using Active Sync. Then, next time a hard reset happens, connect your PocketPC to the PC and choose Guest Partnership. Now, just go to Extras - Save/Restore in Active Sync, and restore a backup. After the restore completed, disconnect the PocketPC, soft-reset it, then re-connect. It will now simply use your old partnership.

I do not know of any way to do that. Maybe someone else does - if yes, I would also be very interested!

First, yes, you can have 2 separate contact lists in Outlook. Just create new folder "that will contain contacts" or something to that effect.
Next, download the MS add-on that will let you sync 2 lists. Maybe part of the powertoys or something like that. Definitely out there. Seen it.

Thanks....Tadzio!!! Your info was a real big help!!
Has any one heard or found this Outlook add in? I searched all over Microsoft's website and couldn't find it???
What is a power toy??

Wifi connection problems - advice required

Hi all.
My Touch Pro 2 has suddenly stopped connecting to any wifi sources
I can still detect wifi networks, and I have recreated all of my previous wifi settings but no joy.
I can't think of anything that I've changed however I did recent "reset to default" my installation of "Advanced Configuration". Wifi worked fine before I installed "Advanced Configuration", after I used it to make changes.
Any suggestions on what I can do to fix this for the next couple of months before I move on to a new phone?
thanks in advance.
You did not tell us what rom you use. Have you tried a hard reset? Try that and see if it works again.

Apologies - it's a standard HTC WinMo 6.1 ROM no mods or updates.
I'm trying to avoid a hard reset if at all possible. It's a lot of hassle having to set the phone up again - configuring bluetooth, wifi, contacts, etc
In any event I'm planning to get a replacement on another OS in a month or so.
Problem solved!

This is my 3rd wm device. I tried once and never again.
You have to have windows on your pc, use outlook and remember to do it. Why would you when there's online solutions now that involve MUCH less restrictions / effort ?

Id follow the advice and do a back up of your contacts and what not and just do a hard reset. Its amusing that you'd rather get a new device then take the 20 minutes it would take to hard reset the phone and resync everything back on and get it back to where you want it though

I suppose it depends what you use your phone for. Like I said.. calandar sycnronization is a must for me.... I would hate to have to type everything out on my phone when I can just change stuff on my computer. Pop it in the dock and away I go!
It's easier than when I had a WinMo device....

It's easy - actually a lot easier than when I had a WinMo device. The new Android phone comes with HTC Sync which allows for syncing with my Outlook install and still allows me to choose what t do with conflicts.
In addition I sync automatically with my online calendar and contacts.
I've been very pleasantly surprised

I did try a hard reset in the end - it made no difference. In addition I was fed up with trying to update to WinMo 6.5 for better finger tip functionality.
Btw I tried that in the past and spent many long hours "convincing" Outlook not to duplicate appoints since it couldn't recognise existing items.
I tried the myphone service and it was quite good - took a bit of time (I couldn't connect to wifi remember ) but quite good.
I agree about the calendar sync that's important for me too...but so is the wifi access when I'm at home.
In the end the choice of wasting more time trying to fix the WinMo device and get it back to where I started was outweighed by the more flexible, finger friendly and app happy Android device.
And the Android device does a automatic backup to a local sd card by default for all my apps and their settings....

I DON'T use outlook on my PC. All my stuff is on my phone. But I do use outlook to create new appointments. When I receive an email that involves a meeting, I typically paste in the details and then sync my phone, which receives the data.
It is also easier to manage contacts with outlook.
I also use Outlook as a backup to my contacts and calendars.
As to why? I prefer to have my information available regardless of network access. On-line means I have to have a data connection available. In my travels I have been to places that do not support T-Mobile or a roaming GSM connection. So my phone has it all... and of course it will sync with my laptop as well.

Well, I intend to have my TP2 for a long while, but after that I may have to decide between Android and WM7. Right now I'm not too big on WM7 because they won't allow customizations to the OS.

Thanks for your contribution - you must be a real blast at parties.
If you had nothing useful to add why bother adding anything at all...?
I tried hard reset and it made no difference - stated that above.
I tried myphone - interesting service but I found it a bit slow - also stated above.
If you're the best the WinMo crowd can offer I'm quite glad I've moved on to the Android patch.
To everyone else thanks for your suggestions.

Unrevoked 3 Rooting Issues with my Droid Incredible

I am in desperate need of a solution...please help.
The company I work for uses Microsoft Exchange Server for our Email Service and before I rooted my Droid Incredible I was able to use the Exchange Activesync service on my phone to sync with my work's email without a problem.
Now that I rooted my phone I receive an error telling me I am unable to connect to the exchange server. I have already attempted to use "K-9 Email Client" and "Lockpicker" to see if I could connect. No luck... I believe the issue is with a missing certificate but I am not sure. I have already contacted my IT Department at my work which ended up being useless cause they are unaware of how to locate the certificate for our email service.
Anyways if anyone could shed some light on this please do...Thank you!
Also Facebook does not sync contacts, the live feed works fine.
I don't really mind this cause I'm using "FB Sync" to get my friends pictures but I do miss having all of Facebook contacts shown in my Contacts List.
Phone: HTC Incredible
Rom: ClockworkMod 2.5.0.1
Kernel: 2.6.29-Hydra-ocuv-ov-n-v07
unroot with the ruu (that should be somewhere close in the dev section)
and re root with unrevoked3. i have to say, ive tried all the roms except pmf yasr and red and blue, and ive never had all these wierd errors everyone had. my theory is that all the incredibles are made differently. some are more resistant to modding and rooting and others arent. but anyway, just ruu and apply unrevoked3. and be sure to backup contacts and data before ruu
sent from my friggin phone
not sure about the email thing, but for your contacts try ensuring that Facebook contacts are selected to show up by going to your contacts list and hitting Menu > View and make sure you have Facebook checked.

Ya I did that and although the option to show Facebook Contacts is available...the list is empty and says I have zero friends. Which is wrong I have over 300 Friends. So the issue has to be with the ROM.

Guys I give up!!!
I've tried two ROMs the one provided by Unrevoked3 by default and JagerRomSense both had the same problem - No Exchange Service and No Facebook Account Sync. I've decided to go back to the Original setup and just wait till the Official Froyo OTA comes out for Verizon. Cause I can't stand having issues with my phone. If you have any comments let me know what you think...Thanks!

This is not a ROM, this is your new recovery which you probably flashed via the unrevoked tool. The unrevoked tool does not provide a ROM, all it does is root your phone and flash Clockwork mod recovery.
I have a feeling this was the start of your problems. You need to understand the differences between these types of things BEFORE you go and start modding your phone.
The company I work for is pretty picky about which phones can connect on their network and I managed to get the incredible up and running. As a hint, we recently purchased a smartphone company. Anyway when the purchase went through and they started letting execs carry the new phones, there were some ActiveSync changes that allowed exchange to work on just about anything that supported the required security policies.
Long story short, I’ve had a few times where i needed to delete the account and reactivate it because of sync problems. In order to do so, it seems like I have to turn lock picker off, setup the account, and then re-enable lock picker if I want that functionality. If you have this program installed, try disabling it, deleting your exchange account, re-adding your account, and then seeing what happens.
If by some strange chance you happen to work for the same company I hinted at above, shoot me a PM here and I’ll get you some instructions I found and essentially translated from the company we just acquired to the Incredible.
I have a phone by said company coming my way; they are expecting most of us to carry it at work. I wonder how hard it will be to switch back and forth…

Sync contacts & calendar to linux

I am about to make my first foray into an Android device (Motorola Defy - Android 2.1 on the Telstra network in Australia) after years and years of faithful Symbian servitude. There is one little thing that is bugging me about Android so I thought I'd ask the experts as I've spent hours looking for an answer and still not coming up with a clear answer.
I understand I can turn off contact and calendar sync with Google quite easily but I'm unable to find anything to suggest how hard/easy it would be to sync my contacts and calendar (via USB, Bluetooth or WiFi - no real preference) to my local computer running Linux, specifically Ubuntu, rather than the cloud. I would prefer it sync to Evolution as this is what I have been using for years now with various forms of SyncML and Symbian phones (most recently syncevolution).
I would really prefer not to give over my hundreds of contacts and all my personal appointments to the cloud so I'm searching for a solution that doesn't involve customising the basic software too much for preference. It doesn't have to be a 24/7 sync, I'm currently just running it on an as required basis. I would even be willing to pay for the service providing it works.
Now I understand the whole "don't buy an Android phone if you don't want to use Google's services" and I've seen many posts like mine deteriorate into "why do you even want this?" so bearing in mind I've considered these arguments already is there anyone with any constructive suggestions?
This...?
https://android-client.forge.funambol.org/
I was looking at this sort of thing but couldn't understand, would this require the installation of my own funambol server on the computer here or would just installing the client on the phone allow it then to talk SyncML to something like hxxp://syncevolution.org/ (unable to post outside links yet sorry for the crap link)? Sorry if it seems noobish but want to confirm before spending money on something that may/may not suit my needs.
I'm not sure as I don't use it myself. I mentioned it cause you mentioned you've been using SyncML in the past so I think it may help...
Thanks for the pointer. I'm trying to work out if
Handset+SyncML client -> Syncevolution -> Evolution
or
Handset+SyncML client -> SyncML Server -> Syncevolution -> Evolution
is going to end up being the case. I guess it's one of those "just get it and see" things it would appear. I was just hoping this could be confirmed either way beforehand because a SyncML server is going to be a fair bit of work for just one phone and one instance of evolution.
I'm looking to get the Motorola Defy in the next week or so, so I will make sure I report back how it goes if no one else has any other information beforehand.
Just a quick follow up for anyone else looking into this. If you have the time I would whole heartedly suggest setting up your own personal funambol server as I couldn't find a reasonable solution to my problem.
As I don't have the time at this point to do that I have used iCal Import/Export in conjunction with Touch Calendar (I dislike the layout of the default calendar and Touch lets me repeat an event every X days which is good for shift workers like myself) for my calendar needs. I have been using the inbuilt Motorola Phone Portal over wifi to import/export vcards into the phone for my contacts.
So now I have my contacts and calendar in the phone and can manually import/export which is as close as I've gotten to syncing locally at this point. If I figure out anything else I'll post back again and I'm still open to other suggestions that are a bit simpler than a separate funambol server.

[Q] Turning off Photo Sync/All syncing

Hi Guys,
Just wanted to see if anyone has been successful in turning off Photo sync. Not sure what Google are playing at but having a "compulsory" syncing arrangement does not suit me. Didn't have this issue with my last android device.
I go into Gallery > Settings and the Photo sync is ON option just wont turn off....
Anyway, a way to turn off syncing all together would be great, even contacts, not fond of being "forced" to do that either.
Thanks in advance guys.

Nah ,as I said, didnt have this issue with my increadible s.
So yeah not real sure why I cant change that option. I think I mentioned that also.
Anyone have any ideas??
Thanks guys.
Have you been messing around with the Google+ app? Both of those options are in the app and can be freely turned off.
And like someone said, also in the sync settings.

Hey, thanks again. =)
No, I deliberately haven’t signed up to G+ because I have no use for it.
But yeah, It just wont enable me to turn off Photo sync in settings...
I have Accounts and Sync OFF all round but the phone just automatically syncs photos when I take a shot or anything....not sure where to and why...very frustrating....
Thanks again guys...
That is strange, I just tried testing it by taking a shot..nothing is synched/uploaded.
can you post a screenshot of your Sync setting & gallery setting?
Attached is my setting (I don't use G+ as well)
Maybe you should remove the account all together in the settings and then re add it and see what it does... I have G+(useless yes) and i can uncheck sync photos no problem... When i go online i don't see any pictures besides the one i uploaded myself on G+. hope that helps!
Sent from my iPad 3G using Tapatalk
Well, if I remove the account, I can at least add contacts locally without being "forced" to sync, then I add my account and bam, no, you can add a contact with out in syncing with my contacts... Call me silly but I would like the "option" to sync things if, IF i want too....it seems I do not have the option here... =(
Vennstrom, I just want to say thank you for your time with this, and everyone else here also, in advance too. =)
Arm, I dont have the ticks on mine, none at all, no options to have on or off, appart from syning globally off but it seems to have no effect..that would be GREAT if it did... =/ whats wrong with my phone!!! =( I love the handset but if I just had the options to sync or not, I'd be a happy little camper let me tell you.
I cant even use the calender with an attached account and I "HAVE" to have one or no dice...so f'ing frustrating...why not a "My Calender" or "PC Sync" option like on my Incredible S....
Thanks again guys.
Please post the screenshot of your setting so we can help you figure it out.
What do you mean you don't have the tick??
Hey Vennstrom,
Yeah like no ticks for on and off. Sorry I havent uploaded any screenies...
I have just tried something though... I put my accounts and sync option ON for a moment...everything synced obviously but the ticks came up...wierd... I would assume if you have it OFF globally, it wouldnt sync AT ALL...but you must have to have it ON to turn induvidual settings OFF... Hasnt completly sorted my problem though... I'd still like a complete lock down on syncing...
The Calender is a worry, as in I cant just "display" my calender without it being chosen to sync also. I played around with that and turned it off and on in calender and what do you know...even though I had Calender sync OFF in settings....it still synced... A little flimsy if you ask me...
Its like you can have everything off...but if it wants to...it will just sybc anyhow...
P.S. I read somewhere if you root, you can delete the "sync.apk" and it will NEVER sync...could this be true??
Cheers.

Hey.
I dont think a screen shot is going to help now really, as I have worked out how to induvidually turn the syncing option on and off. I had bigger questions that was all. The calender issue plus the flimsyness of the phone syncing when it wants to even though the user has turned "OFF" syncing...
My bigger questions were, in my previous post, totally lock down syncing and if I rooted if I would have more control over this, that was all.
Thanks to all that have replied and helped so far. Thank you. =)=)

i didn't look much at the calendar or photos but for contacts android just assumes every contact should be synced somewhere. That somewhere doesn't need to be google though. I did a lot searching but it seems there isn't yet an application to get just fake sync.
For contacts i'm thinking about writing a sync provider that just does nothing. That should be enough to get android to not sync contacts. Than again, i'm not sure if i should, because what i really want is sync with my pc and i likely end up not using and not maintaining the "no sync" provider as soon as i got a good way to have that sync without using cloud services...
I'd think for at least some of the other things (e.g. calendar) it's the same, android/gapps just needs some provider that pretends to sync and every thing is fire for them...
I wonder why it seems that nobody has yet started some project for using android with as minimal as possible private data on google servers...

Yeah it'll be cool if I could like...not sync at all. I just don't have the need for it. Its very disappointing that its almost compulsory now. Not having a stab but its almost an "Apple" approach. Haha. At least you have control over icloud, and that's saying something. Android supposed to be flexible and customizable to the end... Oh well, we'll sort it out. = )

turn it off like this, works for me after flashing a new ROM:
option#1:
- go to accounts & sync
- new account (Google)
- enter details and untick every option (backup, etc) on subsequent screens
- don't join G+
- after account is set up, immediately click on it and untick "photo sync"
- open gallery and make sure sync is OFF
option #2:
Remove Gallery and use Quickpic instead
Thanks for your reply!! I appreciate the info. = )
Yeah I thought that was the only way. Cool, gotcha.
I can't thank in the xda app!! I will when I get to my pc.
Wonder if there's a Google service you can disable...
This is probably 2 months too late but replying in case anyone else needed to know how to turn off photo sync.
Was having same issue as OP and wanted to turn off photo sync but could not find the checkbox anywhere. What you have to do is first turn ON sync settings.
i.e.
Settings --> Accounts & Sync --> On
Click on the google account. Only then will you see the checkboxes. If global sync is turned off the checkboxes will not appear. You can then proceed to uncheck "Sync google-photos". You can turn global sync back to off after this.
Return to gallery --> Settings and google photos sync should now show as OFF.
Hope this helps any other person who doesn't like to be told when and where to sync.
