when creating roms and making fixes to the roms (or cabs) could these be added to the very first post to make it easy to find out what bugs have been found and fixed / not fixed? Trawling through 100's of pages is daunting and boring.
There is a Wiki for the Trinity: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Trinity
On the wiki - there is the available ROM page.
Let's keep it simple - and then a thread for each ROM - where bug fixes etc are discussed. If you have a particular bug - search for it - you will find.
however, by reading threads - you learn a lot - and are then better equipped to help others. that's the whole point of the forum no?
nealed, thanks for the info. Yes I appreciate the threads help you learn and it is useful reading them, but 100 pages is too much for me

then... look just at the pictures.
i agree that is maybe too much 100 pages, but if you really need something.. you will find.
anyway, is a good idea to use the first post for updates. mun and lvsw are doing that

I had an idea tonight while browsing for a CAB file. They're spread about in tons of threads. How nice would it be to start a thread dedicated for CAB files. A brief description of the app/CAB, and a screen shot of what it is. That way in the future when someone is looking for a certain one, they can look though the thread, or just see what's been posted "new", or try different things that maybe the new ROM they flashed may lack. Ideas?
GOOD IDEA.
Better Still why don't we just update the WIKI
Give it a single page for "Cab Files for the Hermes"
It would be an easy please to list them all and give a breif description on each of them and their purpose.
It might make it easier then searching through all the threads trying to find a single cab file.
If you click on the paper clip next to the thread title in each forum it will show you all attachments in the thread.
no...
people need to learn how to use the search function... it does wonders when you change the default from Threads to Posts...
While this is a great idea, I'd be concerned that bug reporting and compatability issues would be diluted. If a CAB has a problem on a particular ROM the problem is going to be reported here as well as on the page for the ROM.
If we can keep it clean and JUST have posts about CABs then I would be definitely in support of this, so I guess the best solution has already been suggested - make a CAB page on the WIKI.
Just my tuppence worth!
Wiki Wiki Wiki
Woudl obvisouly help having the cavs in one place. SOmetimes "duplicate" cabs are attached to threads, with different version having different results.
So.... I suggest they are entered in the Wiki.
I disagree for the same reason of walshieau

In all your free time start that WIKI page. The rest of us can use the search button until you get it finished, and update it everyday too.
Update Wiki.
As much as we ask users not to post before serching for relevant issues, it happens again - Somebody asks the damn question before reading first.
So, who has time to spare, update Wiki.
Cheers

Here is the Wiki Page.
BUT PLEASE STILL SEARCH AND UPDATE.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Hermes_Cabs
Should this be a Hermes thing exclusively? I believe it should be a CAB archive for anything that works on WM5 or WM6. There aren't many "cabs" that run soley on the Hermes.

You wont be here long to enjoy it.
Would the plug-in for other models would work on Trinity?
yes and there are numerous threads in this forum about it already
Please please please please please look before posting new questions.
Our forum is becoming less and less useable - with multiple threads for each topic of discussion.
If you look, search (the site's search feature is not great - do an advanced google search and include only posts from http://forum.xda-developers.com) you WILL find what you want.

But I think it will be less useable too, because there isn't a verified download section for each device.
You mess up your device in no time if you just try what you find.
Anyway, I searched and I found http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=316107&highlight=kaiser+home
Hopefully the thread starter will do it the next time too.
I think it would have been more helpful giving a simple direct answer to the first question than wasting more space giving generic advice about search engines. I don't think any of the responses added anything to the knowledge base (just like this email I guess).
I have to say that people reapeat questions, but, I have never seen a more complicated forum to search something and things are very bad organized. The function 'search' DOES NOT WORK.

Everyone agrees with you that why Nealedsaid to use google search, like this:
http://www.google.com/advanced_search?q=+site:http://forum.xda-developers.com&hl=en&lr=&as_qdr=all
Or like it is in my signature.
Just add as a favorite or bookmark (depend on the browser )
Very simple and it works.
Hi,
I really hope you can help...
I'm looking for a fast, stable rom for my P3600 (danish version). I don't think that there is any 6.0/6.1 danish rom out there, so an english would be great.
Sooo... please give me some recommandations. I would like to try it out tonight...
/Malke
Please, not another "recommend me a ROM" thread!

Not a very usefull answer. Its understandable, that you as an expert regard this as a stupid question, but I simply havent got the time to read through more than 50 pages of posts - sorry.
On the contrary - a link to a page like this would have been usefull: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=385579
I found it, installed it, and it works brilliant! This could have saved me from hours of reading...

...and still you've learnt from it on your own rather than me or someone else giving you a link to what we like.
We all went through almost every ROM till settling for one. Ones were too [email protected]#, others were too $%^ and so on. The point is that liking a ROM is subjective, many users like speed, others like functionality, others the looks, others prefer memory, others prefer lots of apps, others prefer ballance!
Which one of those are you? Can you answer this question without trying at least one ROM from every category I've listed?
People don't answer to threads like yours for two main reasons:
1. there are plenty similar threads started and people get tired of giving same answers to same questions posted by users who are not willing to use the search function to get the info. Hey, it is always easier to just post and ask, huh?
2. ROMs are subjective like the people who make them, like the people using them. We like sweet, others bitter, some love blondes, others redheads, I like fast ROMs, others app packed. Bottom line: free will! Let the user decide for his ROM/chef of his choice. Plus, reading the ROM thread tells you almost everything about bugs, fixes, tweaks, tips, etc.
There's no bad blood in it, it's just we're too tired of answering a question that has been asked so many times and which can't even be answered!
Hope it's clear now!
P.S.: Thanks, but I'm not even 5% close of being an expert, but I search and read alot!

And maybe it wouldn't be so messy, if there wasn't so many threads created just to ask a question that has already been answered in 10 similar threads. Or threads created to ask a question about and issue of a particular ROM, when it should be asked in the ROM thread....
Many situations contribute to the mess you're refering to...
Even the forum search has been enhanced with google search, directly in the forum's search function, but still, it seems to be easier to many users, to just ask instead of searching.
Sometimes a thread is started with something like this:
"I've searched for this but couldn't find it...."
When this happens, search some more, use different keywords, because 95% of the times, the question has already been answered before.
I'm not flaming anyone with this, and I don't have nothing against noobs, as i consider myself one, but please use search, read and then read some more.
Is it possible to have a page dedicated to .cab files only. For all the tweeks and apps, Thanks
I 2nd this, nothing like organization and right now there seems to be none.
Hey you guys. Check out the sticky threads in the General section and the Themes section. There's a thread dedicated to tweaks. And there's a thread dedicated to apps.
Those stickies are useful, but I think the idea proposed is different. The idea would be a place where there are ONLY cab files (along with an explanation of the file) but without the comments. The problem with the stickies is that though they do get things together they are cluttered with comments, questions, problems, resolutions, all to the point where you have to look through tons of pages (for example the radio sticky is currently in page 38, and it's a sticky for one function/cab. So like maybe something more along the lines of a wiki, where people don't post thanks and problems and such. Just the pure cabs, descriptions, and should it apply bugs and fixes. But thereby avoiding having to swim through a sea of comments and contradictions and such. Sometimes it gets confusing and difficult to tell if the problem mentioned in post #2349 is a bug that persisted despite the fix, a new bug, or a fixed bug that is being re-reported by someone that didn't read the solution in post #1457 (or in the worst case, in the edited original post of the cab).
I hope that didn't come off like a rant, it wasn't meant as one, but a clean section/thread would be very handy.

sounds good to me!
Hello,
first thanks for this great place! I would have smashed my Touch HD if xda wouldnt exist
I have a suggestion regarding the ROM forums and threads:
As the cookers and chefs are mostly to busy to gather information from the thread and put them in the first(second...) post, it would be really nice if a threadstarter or moderator could assign a normal user as an "thread-specific" moderator (for only the first three posts for example). So volunteers, people very interested in this ROM, could maintain a buglist, tips and hints, fixes and other helpful stuff from the thousand and more pages and make the life for everybody easier.
Its sometimes really hard to find information in the thousand pages. I think a solution like this would help everybody and reduce the senseless spam questions in the ROM forums. All 1-2 pages new users ask the same as people before, and all are getting the answer "Read through the thread, its mentioned 10 pages before" for example.
Whats your opinion about this?

Hi,
1. I don't think this is possible with the standard vB software. And I know the webmasters are adversed to applying "patches" unless they really help.
2. There is a problem of trust. Moderators are selected on here to be trustworthy, not to carry out malicious activities and to always be fair. I've seen plenty of people on here become friends and then enimies as quick as they can. Giving many users complete control over a single thread could become problematic. If you're just speaking about allowing users to edit another users thread. I can't see that been too risky - but still Impractical with the forum software.
An alternative, If the ROM cook would like someone to help manage the thread, they should arange before hand to let someone bag a few posts on the thread when it's first started (I know its not practical to existing threads). Moderators can help add posts when needed and remove any
pesky "First" messages someone might inject in the way .
Just my thoughts
Ta
Dave
Yes you are absolutly right, good idea
It would be enough if the moderators could move a post of the "Useful thread stuff Collecter / Maintainer" at the second or third position of an existing ROM thread, or if the creator already plans it when creating the thread. That would be exact the same without editing the board software or applying hacks...

Well if it's not possible to arrange this beforehand by timing a the time of thread creation, you could indeed ask on of the mods to help you out there. Don't look at me yet though, haven't figured that one out yet
