It has come to my attention that a spam bot seems to have crawled this site at some point and I'm getting spam to an address that I only use for this site.
This is just to bring this to the attention of someone who might be able to see how this happened and maybe block it? I can just blacklist the address in my profile but it doesn't help the people who used a proper email address to sign up.

Microsoft has an SMTP sending bug in the WinMo 6.1 mail app, that they introduced while trying to get around carriers blocking communicating with non-carrier SMTP servers (which is one of the carriers' many methods to prevent their networks from being used for spamming). The bug can disable all outgoing SMTP communications. This is a WinMo 6.1 problem and is not specific to the awesome Kavana/Ricky ROMs!
It is fixed by adding a registry key called "Operator" (without the quotes) to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Inbox\Settings\
Then, inside the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Inbox\Settings\Operator key you add a String Value named "OutgoingServer" with value "127.0.0.1" (again, both without the quotes.) A soft reset should be done after saving this.
The post at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=396126&page=9 includes an excellent description from a member named Matt, who learned from Microsoft what they were attempting with changes to WinMo 6.1 SMTP sending and what they did wrong and missed in testing.
I'm just wondering if this should be in one of the Excalibur WinMo6.1 stickies, since, apparently, anyone who has any kind of problem sending SMTP messages will see their SMTP sending essentially disabled due to this bug, unless the above registry entry is created.
Also, just some comments/opinions from me: The original poster in the linked thread went through hell with T-Mobile tech support trying to determine the problem, and he did not get to the bottom of it. It seems it was Matt who actually sent his phone to Microsoft (it must have been a device with a Microsoft-approved WinMo6.1 ROM) and had the problem researched. It's an interesting problem, because it would only happen in a non-carrier-prepared ROM or a ROM not properly prepared by the carrier. This is what happens when Microsoft tries too hard to serve the interests of the carriers. Carriers' blocking or intercepting SMTP communications is a blunderous approach to spam prevention. I think it would be better if they focused on shadowing the SMTP communications, analysed them for spammer characteristics, and then referred account holder information to proper authorities when spamming is detected.
Thanks!
Phil

This fix does not apply for 6.5.x?
Tried it but without any result, still mail get stuck on the outbox.
So enoying!
Why have a mail able phone when you're not able to send mail with it
Hi
Found a weird problem with SMS sent to me by T-Mobile and First Direct
When the message arrives it is shown to have come from "John Smith" who isn't in my phones contact list, however he is in my Facebook list BUT without a phone number.
Normally it would show the company name or sometimes 150 for T-Mobile.
If someone who isn't in my contacts sends me a text it is showing the number who sent it.
Anyone else had this or know how to fix it?
Got the same bug myself. Put in a new sim card and the same thing happened again, also the same facebook contact appeared. I just deleted it
OK I deleted the Facebook contact who was showing up (they are not that close a friend anyway)
As soon as I did the SMS changed from his name to First Direct
Not sure why it happened, or what I would have done if it was a close friend, but its fixed for now
I have the same problem, just yesterday... I havent tried to resolve it though..
Problem is I do not know how to delete this facebook contact...

Login to Facebook on your pc.
Goto Friends
Find the one showing up in your SMS
Click on the remove friend link down the left hand side and confirm removal
I had the same...the facebook contact had their phone number listed as '???'.
My (ex) friends number was "Ask Me"
Still not sure how that links it to T-Mobile (150) or First Direct (no number shown)
just posted about this, sorry, missed this post.
i have the same prob, my fb contact has no number but ask me instead. i dont want to delete the contact though, grrr

I wondered when that might happen.... I guess the best option is to delete them, then add them as a friend again?
Although that might bring back the issue, at least its worth a try!
Let us know how you get on.
Got the same problem. Problem is this is quite a close friend so I'm not going delete her.
Hopefully this will get sorted out with a patch or an update.
Damien
Just had the same too, hope there's an update for this, it's quite annoying!
Same for me, friends number is '0800 eat my leg' haha
Rather than writing rubbish in the number fields, why not just leave it blank? Stupid people on Facebook.
Same problem here with texts from Lloyds TSB and mobile fun! As a few others, I don't want to delete the Facebook contact to fix it as it shouldn't be happening to start with. :/
Found that the person was the only Facebook contact I had linked with a stupid phone entry. I have Facebook contacts hidden in 'People' and now none of them linked with silly numbers - I'll see what happens the next time one comes.
I don't think its just limited to Facebook linked contacts as mine was linking to an imported contact from Google but who had an additional business number listed as 'x' in the second number field. deleted the field then all was sorted
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
I have this problem too, when T-Mobile sends me an SMS. At the moment I've only seen Facebook contacts linked to the messages, 2 different contacts so far. One of them (happened just now) actually has her proper mobile number set. In both cases these people exist as contacts purely on facebook, they are not "linked" to a phone/google contact.
I've reported the problem to HTC support, I'll post if I get a reply. Please make sure you report the problem so that HTC are aware of it.
I'm getting the same problem too with my Orange Desire

My fb friend also has "ask me" grrrr
Contacted Orange and HTC to see if they know a fix to this, if not I'll just have to delete that contact.
I contacted HTC last week... just got the following back from them:
Thank you for contacting us. The issue that you have described is known to us, and we are currently investigating this. We hope to have this resolved in a future software update, and you are advised to regularly check the update feature on your phone in order to download any ROM updates as and when they become available. HTC greatly appreciate all feedback from our customers regarding technical issues, and please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused.
Hopefully they fix it soon. The more contact they get about it, the higher priority they might give it (wishfull thinking!!) so if anyone is getting this issue please contact HTC via their support link:

Thanks

File name: smsbarrage.apk File size: 30.67 KB
There ya go
If txt free is giving you a number to respond to let that person have it. You can send as many texts as you want (they are repeated texts) If you have free texting shoot out 100 - 100000 texts to their number
how do i know if they send? i opened the app, put like 3,000 and i push send and i get a sending box and it disappears..did they send?

check this link ^^
It appears as though if you reply STOP
textfree server will send back a text asking whether to block that user or all text free texts.
I do not know if smsbarrage works with 2.2 I used to use it on 2.1
::EDIT::
Yes SMSBarrage still works. I just tested it on my own number. It took awhile but I got my own spam

Yep no problem Have fun
EDIT: RESOLVED.
Hello,
For some inexplicable reason, I quit getting email notifications of threads I'm currently subscribed to. I double-checked my forum setting and even made a filter to make sure the emails aren't going to spam, but to no avail.
Any ideas?
EDIT: I'm also not getting PM emails either.
Sounds like an email issue at your end, as my pm notifications seem fine.
Could your provider be filtering them?

I suppose it's possible, but I've not had that issue before. But it's Craptastic Verizon DSL, so I definitely wouldn't put it past them. I'll check into it.
Thanks for the response.
EDIT: I just checked my previous e-mails and all my notifications suddenly stopped after November 10th at 11:08am EST. Weird.
EDIT AGAIN: Figured it out. For some reason Google locked the email address I was using (one I have forwarded to my main account)???? I've had that email for 6,443,522 years, so i'm not sure why. But I've sent a note to get it unlocked. Sorry for wasting anyone's time.
I been getting spam text messages and I have on spam and fraud protection on. I have notification for it turn off but still getting notifications. How can I get it to stop alerting me everything I get a message. It kinda defeats the the purpose of having it on.
It isn't possibe to block all spam. The Messages app will be using an algorithm and likely a database to determine what is spam and what isn't.
A better choice is to be proactive and get your number removed from whichever service keeps messaging you.

I could be wrong, but I think the OP (correct me if I'm wrong, @VUser16) is saying that Messages is blocking the SPAM, but it still gives a notice it blocked a text, so it's almost as annoying as just allowing SPAM through. i.e. Google Messages is substituting its notice that it blocked SPAM instead of the original actual SPAM text.
They're not complaining that it's not blocking all the SPAM. Almost all SPAM I've ever received is from nefarious senders, not actual services I've signed up with, and mistakenly given them my phone number and okayed them to send me texts.
