Slow jump from "3G" to "H" when surfing. - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

I'm in Cingular, always in 3G area. Using WM6, Internet connection always on.
Every time I open Explorer or any Internet application, I get the "Locating" message in the bottom bar, nothing happens for 2 seconds, then the 3G icon becomes an "H" and only then the connecting & downloading starts.
Is the HSDPA connection on a permanent "sleep mode"? I know it's only two seconds, but...
Help please.

HSDPA is invoked by the network hardware, since its only on when your actually downloading data you are saving alot of battery power. If you dont like the wait you can always turn HSDPA off??

I`m also in NY and I get the samething, sometimes it seems to me that EDGE is faster because of that locating on the 3G (HSDPA)

Roaming on the 8525?

After I upgraded to wm6 I notcied that when connected to gprs the "G" over the bars that show my signal strength is now an "E" and when I go to retrieve my email it says I am roaming. Does the "E" actually mean I'm roaming or is my phone messed up and if it really does mean I'm roaming is there a way I can change this back to the way it was before without downgrading back to wm5?
Oh, and I have another problem - when I turn off my phone and put it in stand-by or hibernation mode or turning the screen off, every several minutes it turns back on. Is there a cure for this one too or is this something I will have to live with?

The "E" means you are on the EDGE network it does not mean you are roaming. EDGE is GRPS only faster for data. I can't answer why for email you are getting roaming messages. Maybe someone else can help.

my wifi, have an E icon, is that correct?

so i enabled wifi, but how do i know i'm really using wifi and not 3g if i see a small E on top of the bars? it seems as if I can not turn off my data connection if i have wifi on..is that correct?

as you may know the "E" is 2g not 3g. When it is 3g it will say "3g" or "H", "H" being faster than "3g".
your wifi goes into "sleep" mode when not being used, helps on battery life, when your phone demands a connection it will take the wifi out of sleep if try to connect and if it does you will see the wifi icon, and if you are not an area that has wifi it will revert back to your data connection.

Not always.
AT&T purposely does not show the H and always shows 3G even if it is a HSDPA connection.
since i flashed w/ a new rom, there's no more 3g icon, but i did figure out how to bring the H back, but for some reason i have no idea why my wifi isn't working. someone told me to disable proxy, but i did that

that is true on a stock ATT ROM, but if you flashed a custom ROM it will display correctly

have you tried going to settings>wifi> click "turn on Wi-FI" select wireless networks and see if you phone detects any networks? If there is a network available then select it and set it up.
did you hard reset after you flashed?

3G Icon On Notification Bar

New to Android phones, (I did a search but nothing was found), I was connected to Vodafone yesterday and there has never been a 3G Icon in the notification Bar (Network Signal has the 4 full bars)
When I am at home I use a Vodafone sure signal for 3G but it does not show in the notification bar either, (obviously I am connected to 3G when at home)
My network mode is set to GSM/WCDMA auto, so have I done something wrong or can some suggest how I can have this Icon showing.
I had the same issue - called up support and had them change my SIM card to the new one that came with the phone and since then I now get up to H depending if I'm in a decent area of Liverpool...

Thanks for the reply, this was a new sim card supplied with the phone I moved from T-Mobile to Vodafone so I could use the SureSignal to get rid of the crappy signal in the house.
Just solved the problem, if you switch off Wi-Fi then go into "settings/Mobile network connect to the internet it appears on the notification bar"
I thought you'd have it on already - glad you're sorted though!
I have only seen 'H' in my toolbar and none of the other notification (3G etc) mentioned in the manual there. Normal? Or do I just have a good connection?

The H means you have the HSDPA connection which is quicker than standard 3G. 3.5G if you will
ive also never seen a 3g icon, had the H and G one before
I use to get a 'H' on my kaiser
but on on my desire on Orange. I get a '3G+' symbol now. is this the same as 'H'?

Guys, remember that Android works differently from WIndows Mobile.
On WIndows mobile, you had the G, E, 3G or H all the time showing what signal you had. Android does not do that.
The 3G/H icon only appears when connected to the internet. the rest of the time it just shows signal bars.
And yeah, if wifi is on it will disconnect from the internet and that icon will disappear. cos after all, as long as you have signal when just using voice and text, it doesn't really matter whether it's 3G or not.
And Yes, 3G+ is the same as H. 3G+ is Orange's stupid marketing speak for HSDPA.
I have constant 'G' which changes to 3G/H when in areas that allow it...phone works fine so no issues since changing my SIM card
I am also experiencing this problem and to clarify it:
Sometimes (i think it has something to do with using camera) the animation stops working (the arrows stays shadow even if i am downloading) or the 3h/h icon disappears completely (but i am still connected to mobile data).
Disconnecting and reconnecting mobile data (e.g. swithing to wifi and back, rebooting phone or turning airplane on and off) solves this problem and the animated 3g/h icon (arrows are white when downloading and shadow when connection idle) is back.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem permanently?
I have had no such a bug on my Milestone

Data never works when showing "3G"

My phone doesn't seem to have any data connection when "3G" shows, but works amazingly on "H" and just about bareable on "G". "E" shows occaisionally and doesn't seem to have internet access either.
When loading a web page for example, if it starts on "H" it will start loading, if it switches over to "3G" halfway through loading, it will hang and nothing will continue until it switches back to "H".
I've found many, many threads on similar issues on here, but wondering if anyone experiences this exact same problem.
I'm thinking my telco's (Vodafone Australia) default APN settings that are pushed to the phone arn't very compatible with android.
same for me. if it is 3g it waits till get h then loads... mine is t mob uk, probably because of them...
And what about E (edge)?
mine is on only wdcma mode...
3g H
hi, my carrier is orange, luxembourg,
had extreme difficulties with 3g, h and e,
but after 2.2 ota everything is great.
same problem for me... it doesn't transfer any data on 3g... all is fine on h,e, and g

[Q] I'm only getting data when says "E" or "H", no data when "3G"

[Q] I'm only getting data when says "E" or "H", no data when "3G"
Data works fine in EDGE (E) and in the highspeed (H) mode, but when it says 3G not a single byte gets through. Is this normal behaviour?
If yes, then what are the arrows for? When in 3G-mode, what exactly does it mean when the up and/or download arrow lights up or blinks? Because it looks like it's getting data, the download arrow is constantly lit but as I said, nothing gets through.
I know it's supposed to switch to H-mode when transferring data but when I'm on a train or in another location with poor reception it obviously can't. But I can see it trying. Eventually it falls back to edge. This I understand.

I think, but i`m not sure,it have to do with Fast Dormancy. You can try to disable it and see if it`s better.
Funny, I have been wanting to know the same thing for ages. Whats the point in it saying 3G when it automatically hops to H when it want to do anything. There has been times where the reception isn't great and it stays on 3G but I cannot access anything data related
Its normal, 3G hipri protocols. There is no problem in that, is HOX the first android device u use?
