PIM.VOL - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

My xda exec is dead...I have managed to salvage the PIM.VOL file for it. Can anyone confirm if I can use this elsewhere to get the contacts on either another XDA Exec, or does anyone know of a PIM.VOL reader? Windows based for example? Or something that will be able to extract aforementioned information.
Many thanks,
Kasam

I don't know of a PIM.vol reader, but you should have no problem putting this file on another Exec or even a different WM 5 device provided it has the same AKU version as your dead Exec.
PIM.vol is slightly different between AKU versions.

You can use a Hex Editor to read the file. All the contacts are stored sequentially, so it's pretty easy to find them.

XDA2i Keyboard update Keybddr.dll issue - buttons dont work

Hi
I updated my XDA2i with the above keyboard dll posted on this site and now the buttons do not work. It seems that this dll does not work on the XDA2i.
The original dll was overwritten because for some reason, the dll did not appear in explorer (even when hidden systems files are visible) so I was unable to rename it.
Does anyone have an original copy of the above dll so I can restore the XDA2i to its former glory?
Jonno
i looked in the windows dir on my XDA2i to get the keyboard.dll file for you but i dont have one, where can i find it
John
Hi
For some reason, you cannot see the keybddr.dll file in native windows explorer or on the XDA2i itself, even though other dll's are visible. If you install the Resco file explorer product, you can select the option to view all dll's so this allows you to see the file.
In any case the updated dll does not seem to work on the XDA2i so does anyone know if the current version will be updated?
Cheers
Jonathon
This dll does not work on PPC W2k2 SE so you need to use AE Button Plus. You can get this from searching this site.

how to change files in windows directory

I connect universal to my pc w/ usb and want to rename/delete files in windows directory. It told me some pemmisson error. How can I do such things?
I can create new folds in the directory.
Seems a new bie question. thanks in advance.
Files in the windows folder are generally ROM files, so you can't really delete them, they'll just come back from ROM when you reset.
So - you can use the old technique, normally, of using something like gsfinder, rename the file you want to change, eg ctlpnl.exe to ctlpnl.orig, then copy a new file into the windows folder and rename it to ctlpnl.exe.
That works well with some files, but not all.
To do some heavy duty modding, you would have to make your own rom. Find RomTools by Mamaich.

But I can't rename any files belong to original rom. When I use GSfinder to rename the file, it also reported "Cannot rename file.". I checked the property of the file, it has "rom" property and the checkbox of "rom" property is gray.
How?
I attached a jpg file when I want to change the name of "smartdialing.dll".
My device info:
ROM: 1.30.111 WWE
Radio: 1.11.00
Protocal: 42.45.P8
ExtROM: 1.30.230 WWE
T-Mobile Germany version
As you say, if it's a proper ROM file that wants to be stubborn (it may already be in use. Try closing the app using a good task manager first) then your other option could just be burning a new rom.
Why do you need to rename it?

It seems that's not the reason. I can't even rename a htm or gif file with ROM property.
I want to localize smartdialing.dll.
Thanks for your quick response!
I think there's already a tutorial/solution to a localized smartdialler.
Can't remember the poster, check Buzz's site.
V
yes, I want to create a Chinese version of smartdialing based on their tutorial.
However, I tried to replace the original dll with my modified one, and FAILED. That's really troublesome. Seems nobody else has the same issue as mine.
Got a simular problem.
I'm trying to install OZVGA and according to the instructions you need to copy some files (Backlight.exe Camera.exe etc.) into the windows directory, but i'm not allowed to do so. Files are read only or in use.
Some suggestions?
Use TotalCommander.

useless.
Any one knows why?
I had the ozvga issue. I installed the extended ROM unlocker (from buzzdev.net I think) and then it let me replace them.
Hope this helps.
Coincidentally, I've just upgraded to the latest T-Mobile ROM and need to re-apply ozvga but I can't find the files/instructions anymore. Got a link handy?

Help please..need MSN exraction from WM6 ROM...

In short I have the new Athena/Ameo, but T-mobile doesn't like anyone using MSN live etc on their web n walk tariff, hence they have excluded it from the ROM.
Question: Do any of you know if it is possible for me to copy/paste the MSN exe from my WM6 Universal and simply dump it into the Windows directory of another WM5 device (e.g. Ameo) in order to use it there?
Do you guys think it is feesable or hazardous? Appreciate any feedback on this.
Did you check if the windows directory has instmsgr.exe or not? Generally the only thing they exclude is the shortcut. They don't delete the actual application.

No, it's not present.
I've tried taking the msn mobile files from the Rom kitchen thread, copied them the the Ameos windows folder then run the instmgr.exe. Nothing happens.
Anyone else have any ideas?

Contacts PIM Help

Heya, I backed up my contacts PIM File then after upgrading to WM6 Restored it (Copy&Paste). However my contact list will not open. Anyknow please help me fix this
Also anyone got a download link for MSN the standard one which normally comes on WM6 as it isnt on there.
Thanks
Nick
Depends which your previous version was
The structure of PIM.VOL changed from after WM5 AKU 3.0 (I think!), so if you previously used an AKU 3.0 ROM, you can't reuse the PIM.VOL from that version; you would have to resync the Contacts info using ActiveSync.
It may be that AKU 3.0 uses the current file structure (I can't remember!); if so, you may simply need to follow a few steps to paste your valid version.
PIM.VOL is a locked system file, so a paste operation may fail unless you use Resco Explorer to rename the existing one to PIM.OLD before pasting the older file to My Device. The built-in File Explorer won't allow system file renaming.
Once the paste has occurred, do a soft reset, and see if the older file has been picked up.

Heya, I copy and pasted by renaming first basicly what you said. Erm my pervious version was WM5. How would I resync it if WM6 Wont access it? Thanks Nick
If you can't recycle your old PIM.VOL for whatever reason, you will need to resync from your PC copy of Outlook.
If the data in Outlook is not up to date, the only answer is to flash back to WM5, reload the old PIM.VOL, do an ActiveSync sync to the PC, then repeat the WM6 flash, followed by a resync to the PC with Activesync.
Thanks I resync it and all is good Thanks Again Nick

Method to attempt to fix the looping reboot issue.

After the removal of duplicate notifications w/ SKTools Lite, removal of the Windows Live service and the FizzWeather fix, I decided to try something else out.
I was reading a thread about dumping ROMS and got to a part that showed me how to access the files on the dumped ROM. I couldn't find any dumped Excalibur WM6 or WM5 ROMS so I used a ROM for the Hermes. I searched the list of dll files within the ROM and found a dll named sdhc_sc2410.dll. I figured I'd copy the SDHC dll from this ROM, add it to my Windows directory and change the appropriate registry entry to point to this file to see if it would fix my looping reboot issue. It didn't. I'd like to get my hands on a WM5 shdc dll but I cannot find any Dumped WM5 Excalibur ROMS here. I never had the issue when running WM5 so I'm thinking the dll file shouldn't be all jacked up like the one on WM6.
If anyone is still running WM5, would you please dump the ROM and extract the file? The file name is located at HKLM\Drivers\Builtin\SDHC (in WM6). Open the dll key to reveal the name of the dll the SDHC uses. I'd like to test w/ the file provided from WM5.
