I was in the process of applying an upgrade to the ROM using my laptop.
Everything was going fine so I went to make a drink. When I returned the screen saver was active on the Laptop and the screen on the XDA 2 was grey showing a progress report of 55% complete. When I looked at my PC sdreen there was an error message saying that my USB connection had failed (not the exact words) and offered to try to re-connect or end connection. I tried both but couldn't get activesync to reconnect. I have since tried a soft reset and hard reset but all I have is the O2 start screen with the bubbles. I can not switch off without removing the battery. Please Help

It looks like the screensaver screwed up the connection. Not to worry, your device can still be upgraded.
Put the device in boot loader mode by pressing and holding the jog button (bottom centre of device) and the power button at the same time and press reset button. This should show the bootloader screen (dark screen with Serial V1.0x displayed). Put the device in the cradle and it should then display USB V1.0x. You don't need Activesync as the upgrade process looks after its own connection.
Make sure that the cradle is connected directly to th USB port on your laptop and not to a HUB and that the power supply is connected to the cradle. Disable the screensaver on your PC , restart the upgrade and it should work OK.
Hi there, I am from Malaysia, have feel question:
1) I am currently using Rom 1.72 which WAXX posted it earlier. Should I upgrade to this version that dcs posted? Is it necessary?
2)What is Blckberry that u guys kept on mention?
Thanks you very much.
You are a STAR Sir
Thank you very much for your help. It is people like you that brighten up the dullest of Manchester days. Your advise worked a treat and saved me from returning, what was a paper weight, to the "O2 Service Dept" (who are subcontracted by O2). Why they couldn't have given me the same instructions I will never know.
Just to alert others to the incompetance of the whole system. Nowhere in the instructions does it tell you to switch off the screensaver, (I suppose with hindsite I should have checked it myself!!!).
I spent the best part of an hour on the phone being passed around different departments as I questioned why it should happen and why nothing was being done to rectify the matter.
I am informed by the O2 Service Dept that a memo highlighting the Number of people returning machines affected as mine, has been ciculating the offices of O2, and distributed to Dealers for the last week. Wouldn't it be easier to temporaraly remove the download or add a warning about screensavers, or is this just another way the Service Dept has to make money?
Once again Thank You

Thank you . To be fair though, until you had this happen, I never thought about the consequences of a screensaver activating. It is something I can add to the list of things to be aware of though .
From what I have read from different people on this forum, however, I agree that O2 support is sadly lacking in basic knowledge for these 'modern' devices, and one would now expect their installation instructions to contain the things they should have learnt from people like yourself. We will have to see .
I have been sent a link from O2 Data Support for downloading the new XDA2s ROM upgrade, which apparently will fix the Bluetooth problems.
The link is...
http://www.sourceo2.com/O2_Developers/Devices/O2_Xda_II/XdaIIs_launchROM.htm
Haven't done anything with it yet, but thought you guys might like to know...

Hmm I wonder if I can use this update on my O2 Xda2s.
I got it in Malasyia.
Noel
I installed it on my UK XDA 2s, I will report back later.
In the PDF it's saying that this version is only for devices sold by O² UK or O² Ireland... Not sure if I should give it a go on my version..
Noel
I think I might wait and see what others say about this before I install it myself. So many that have it already say it is great but then you hear others say it has caused problems.
That post is the launch rom, not an upgrade. LMAO It is intended for people who attempt to flash the XDA IIs with a different vendors rom and screw it up.
Mike
Nope, its not, click the link. O2 are obviously just too lazy to create a new page for a new rom!
Nigel
HAHA you are correct!!! LMAO oh well.
Hi..have installed the update..and have encountered several problems...was wondering if anyone could help me.
I hate the fact that the clock has disappeared from the top right so whe u are using applications its no longer visible. Is there any way of bring it back?
Also now when you click the o2 at the top it dosn't give the active connections anymore. Therefore whats the quickest way to disconnect the gprs? and is there any way of bringing that back to how it used to be?
I have also had to reset my phone more often that I had to before.
Was wondering if anyone had encountered the same problems and how to resolve them.
Thanks so much...
Bit the bullet and upgraded last night, wifi still works and as I use Corporate mode I don't get any issues with 02 active, icons or clocks. All seems normal, so far!
Have to agree with Dave. I finally bit the bullet and installed the update last night. Don't like the new O2 active and put the clock straight back with the registry key.
Other than the missing clock and poor O2 Active software which I never use anyway no real problems. Tom Tom still works fine with my Bluetooth GPS receiver. WIFI still works fine with WPA security and everything locked down on the access point.
Still receive SMS notification and its nice that you're not limited to 70 char when using ' in sms text messages now!
All ok.
har5ha:
Just get the old O2 active back. To to this, head to the xda-dev FTP site, find the old O2 XDA IIs extended rom, pull it, find the file install.ARM.CAB (O2 active)
Sync/backup yr stuff then hard reset the XDA IIs, and let it do its stuff. When leave it to install the extended rom, but be ready to soft reset it when you get asked the 'corporate/personal' question (you'll have to watch the screen since there is a timeout). Once it reboots, copy install.ARM.CAB to the machine, and execute it. It will soft reset yr device at the end.
I use 2 things from O2 active, the battery plugin and the O2 icon to kill connections. Shame billy did not think to include a disconnect dialogue as well really (he put on in for vpn).
There might be a way to install old over new, dunno. I tried and it locks loads of files (even if you prevent it from loading).
Nigel
thanks Nigel...I ended up installing gb soft for the disconnect button.
So its ok...still getting loads of crashing. I think am going to reinstall it and then use corporate mode..hopefully it will crash less!
can I get an update on xda iis rom update
Hi all, I'm still new to this whole thing but reading and researching all I can. Don't have an xda iis as of yet, but on the high streets waiting list. I like the phone and in one way, can't wait, but don't want problems when I get it, especially at the price. Can anyone on o2 that has purchased their phone from o2 let me know how you are getting on...problems...ect, before and after the update.? To be honest, I'm a bit afraid to bite the bullet and get one right now due to what I'm hearing...especially since I'm not very computer smart. I do understand that it depends a lot on the manufacturer of the phone but if I had problems like I'm hearing about it would really do my head in...(no patience). Thanks
Well I love my phone to bits...had issues with the update but now that I have hard reset it and put it corporate mode its not freezing anymore.
But you have to remember its a pocket pc...like a pc..will need to be reset every so often...I was resetting mine of average once a day. It just takes a minute.
There are some negative points..but the positive outweighs the negative I think. My old pda was palm os (clie) and this is windows which is really good! As well as the fact that it has a phone built in too!
Hi all.
Can you please post some more feedback on this rom.
How is the BT stability?
Range?
Crackling noise?
License Expired troubbles?
I know its Build 3500, but maybe something else in this rom makes a difference.
How about the problem with sound dissapering when you answer a call.
Any troubbles here? This is really a pain in the (_!_)
Running the New Rom for a couple of days now and it seems much better than the launch Rom, The O2 active stuff is just as pants as usual so remove that and the "Connections" exe from Windows\startup.
Best thing is that it's stopped the annoying bug of the GPRS settings being screwed up when you enable/disable Wi-Fi.
Recommend it myself

Anybody knows the password for this rom
PDA2K Upgrade
Hi, Can this rom replace the i mate rom on the 2K.& If so will it then be sim locked to O2? as I want to use an O2 pay as you go, & T-mobile sim
many thanks in advance............
I saw a post on here about the progs in the windows/startup folder. Someone mentioned that removing the "connections" executable file had made their XDA more stable. It seems to be the exe that places the O2 icon on the task bar at the top of the screen.
I tried just that...moved the file out of startup to a temp backup folder and did a soft reset.
That was a couple of days ago and I haven't had to reset since Previously I was having to reset 3 or 4 times a day just through very light use!
Thanks for the suggestion Wilesd
Hmm not sure what .exe you are talking about in the windows\StartUp folder.
All I have there are:
Code:
aPerSaveStark.lnk
Camera_Detect.lnk
CheckAutoRun.lnk
ChgDfLnk.lnk
cPerSaveStar.lnk
IA_Caller_ID.lnk
nPerSaveStar.lnk
O2 Connect.lnk
poutlook.lnk
RegNotify.exe
Run_BTTrayCE_10.lnk
Spb GPRS Notify.lnk
STK.lnk
tPerSaveStar.lnk
As you can see.. The only .exe I have is the RegNotify.exe.
The closest that I get to O2 is the O2 Connect.lnk shortcut..
Is that the one you moved?
I don't have the "02 Connect" link in my startup. The file I moved was called "Connections". I can't see on my pda what the file extension is so I don't know if it was a .lnk or a .exe. The mention in the previous post I got the info from was that it was an executable though.
THIS is the post I saw it in.
Maybe it's a country specific thing ?
After all the crashing I was getting with the 1.31 ROM and O2 Active which I never used I decided to do the Corporate install that does not put on the O2 Active rubbish. My phone has not crashed since before I was getting at least 4-5 lockups a day!
Glad I could help, anyway I had to hard reset mine after i installed some dodgy camera upgrade Cab file so decided to give the "Corporate" option ago this time, just select Corporate during the Boot up and type 0506 when it asks for a corporate code.
No looking back now, basically you get a clean WM2003SE install without ANY O2 rubbish but all the GPRS configs etc.. intact. I have not had to do a single reset since.
Recommend this method to any fed up with the O2 active stuff screwing up your IIs. I can honestly say I can't fault the device now.
Thanks for the info guys.
I been holding back from doing the ROM update on my XDAIIs due to everyone saying they have to keep sot reseting their device.
I've just removed the connections.exe from startup folder on my existing setup - make sure i'm happy to carry on without the O2 icon at the top.
Will let you know how I get on.
Thanks again.
Great I shall try this tomorrow.
I've been getting regular crashes on my XDA 2s since I upgraded to the latest ROM.
D
Thanks, removed the O2 connections as suggested 2 days ago and have not needed to reset since.
Was having to reset 2 or 3 times a day since I'd upgraded.
difference between corporate and personal
Whats the difference between corporate and personal mode?
Corporate mode basically doesnt install O2 Active at all so you're left with the default windows screen (presumably so you could customise with your own corporate guff)

Thanks and what do you mean "0506" as corporate code?
thanks ...yellow screen?
thanks guys the corp version seems to do the trick, look very stable now. who need o2 crap. however i can't fail that notice that the screen is slightly yellow from certain angles. it look whitish when you are right in front of it but from any other angle it looks yellowish...anyone else with similar screens? don't remember this to be the case with my previous trusted xda 2...it's a nice device though...

It seems to be a thing with the latest XDA2 "s" and "i" models as it didn't happen on the original XDA2. I did read that the original had Sony screens but the newer ones are made by someone else.
Regardless of this minor inconvenience, I do think the new screens are much brighter that the previous ones...Just my opinion of course

increase brightness levels
yes they are brighter indeed...also, the xda2s by default reduces the light of the screen to conserve power when used on a battery...if you fix this the yellowish feel goes almost away...why can't they get their sceens right, same probs with bloody apple products, don't they understand that their screen are the most important interface with their devices...

connections.exe in start up
I removed the connections as advised in my XDA IIs and yes it did improve the stability, but after several days I found that even though the PDA was working well the phone would not work properly, either the phone would lock or it would not dial out, or you would answer a call but the caller could not be heard. On two occasions my blue tooth connection was lost. though this only happened on the first day. This was solved by a soft reset. So I have come to the conclusion that yes connections is the trigger but also it dose serve some purpose. I am therefore going to use the corporate mode which seems to be a common solution on many forum topic subjects. I hope this feedback helps others.
I have only just got an XDA2s & noticed that I was resetting 5 or more times per day. I have now removed connections.exe from the startup folder and also removed all references to O2 Active from the Today program and the Start Menus
I'll post results in a few days

I tried corporate mode with removed connections.exe and installed beta of the new today screen.
I have noticed an issue with losing connections too, and your comment about not hearing caller reminds me that happened to me but I thought nothing of it at the time.
I have noticed a bit of a pattern to the not dialling out issue
Basically if the phone loses all connection for a while (not sure how long) then it seems to not get it back when you get to an area you can receive. A soft reset sorts this out.
But this is highly annoying for me, I live in London and go to work on the underground (subway to you yanks) and when I come out if I forget to reset my BA it will not receive calls or dial out.
XDA IIs Stability
What ROM version or versions are you all using?
I'm also having to reset my XDA a couple of times of day and would like to improve on the stability of the device. I've looked in my \Windows\startup and have various links (one is O2 Connect) and two executables (CommLoader.exe and RegNotify.exe).
Also, when I have had to do a hard re-set I have never gotten the option of 'Corporate or Personal'. Probably because of different ROM versions.
Also have any of you experienced problems with the Bluetooth no starting because of low memory on a regular basis?
Do any of you have an O2 XDA IIs from Asia?
Thanks
No resets in 3 days now I've removed connections.exe & stop using O2 Active UI Not using corporate mode though - I'm not brave enough yet to try upgrading my ROM
hey guyz..
the scene is set, dont want to tell anyone where it happened by whom and ofcourse who got robbed but here's the story.
User had an o2 Xda II, customized rom, with IIWPO Theft Control installed in the rom, so that means hard reset wont wipe IIWPO out of the pda.
Robber comes puts a knife on the user's throat takes away cash and the pda, user gives it happily thinking she will get a msg on the other number with all the info of sim changed.
4 days pass by no info come's and the pda is sold or forwarded to someone else or whatever. END OF STORY.
now how did the user not get a msg of the new sim info.
1. SIM WAS NOT CHANGED.
2.SIM CHANGED BUT NO CREDIT IN NEW SIM.
3.BATTERY TAKEN OUT PDA TOTALLY DEAD TILL NEW CUSTOMER GETS IT. ETC ETC.
WHAT CAN BE DONE.
ok guyz this is the part where i would like allll the geeks & gurus to put in some effort, i know it will be tough but i have a feeling its not impossible.
CAN UR,LL UPDATE IIWPO IN SUCH A WAY THAT WHEN WE ARE FEEDING OUR NAME AND OTHER INFO IT WILL ALSO ASK FOR A SECURITY PASS TO BE PUT IN, SO THAT WHEN ROBBER CHANGES SIM THE IIWPO RECOGNIZES THE SIM CHANGE AND LOCK'S THE PDA AND ASKS FOR THE PASS, AND WONT UNLOCK TILL PASS PROVIDED, REBOOT WONT HELP.
Now ofcourse the robber can be anyone, so the robber plans to hard reset and still the device would recognize the sim change and ask for pass now so annoyed he plans to flash the device and what happens after that all of us know.
To prevent this THE GEEKS & GURUS can just build a small security patch that can wont allow flashing of device till pass given, it would work like this, we flash our device for the first time install IIWPO and the NEW SECURITY PATCH (with passwords) device is robbed, robber changes the sim gets pass error he gets pissed and tries to flash the device and that clever software would not flash the device till pass provided, this would prove that all the efforts the robber made to steal the device are gone to waste.
And ofcourse someday someone might put in a sim with credit and we would get the info.
NOT FORGETTING CHARLES WARNER FOR THE GREAT WORK HE'S PUT IN FOR ALL xda-developers.com USERS and also giving the IIWPO to us for free, REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR WORK SIR !! THANKS ALOT.
no one interested in being secured ?
I think the IIWPO idea can definitely be improved, BUT: It will never protect you from being robbed.
The true advantage of IIWPO in its currect form is to be able to get track of the 'new' owner of a nicked device. In the end: someone will put in his/her sim and then its just bing!
All other enhancements will just make sure noone else gets to use the device. Sure an improvement, but less important to me: I just want my device back and get the thief nailed!
Interesting...
But I think you have misunderstood how IIWPO works.
IIWPO does not detect if someone changes the SIM card. It ONLY acts when the someone changes the Owner Information (Start/Settings/Owner Information), so no matter what SIM card there is, as long as it has credit it will send an SMS to the recipient's phone number. That's the beauty of it, that it silently sends the SMS with the 'new' users data so there is a slight chance of knowing who's the 'new' owner.
But! This is by no means fool proof. It's what they call 'protection by obscurity', so if a savvy robber knows how to reflash the device it will get away with it no matter what features we can integrate to IIWPO.
That's one of the cool new features of WM5.0, that we can at least know for sure that our data is SAFE by wiping the info remotely if necessary.
Just a thought.

ofcourse this is why we all love IIWPO cause it sends use a msg, and ofcourse even if someone was to modify IIWPO iam sure that this feature would'nt wipe out.god forbid you get robbed u get a msg frm the cell but you for some reason cant track the person or some other c#@p...and the pda is gone....WHY caz it only sends sms it does not block the screen....if you were to have a feature which would jam or freeze the pda on change of the name then the pda would be useless to the robber nothing much he could do....unless he knows how to flash it...now comes a part where we can do something about not flashin the device with out a pass....this would totally make the pda useless to the robber and would also keep sendin us msgs and secondly the robber maybe maybe next time might think twice before robbing a pda and might go for something else
How about a device that would be installed internally to the xda and if it is stolen and a different sim/different user info is entered and the person makes a call it fires a large captive bolt which nails the phone to the head of the user, it then adjusts itself to full volume with all lights flashing and announcing "This is a stolen phone...call an ambulance...or hearse".,

I perfectly understands the IIWPO functionality. It was me who put together IIWPO for other devices than Wallaby.
Let me explain how my earlier post should be interpreted: Sure it is triggered by the change of owner info, but most thieves (or buyer from a stolen device) will put in another SIM (simply because they dont have the pin of the stolen sim or because the stolen sim is blocked by the network). Thus: As soon as the 'new' owner puts in a SIM AND he/she has changed the owner info (and every one does that!) the sms is sent.
Also: Eventually a thief might flash a device, but ost certain a thief (or buyer) starts it up to test whether its working or not.
Imho IIWPO can be improved, but practically chances of getting a device back will not significantly improve

Yeah, but still I would feel somewhat better if I can at least call the thief/buyer and shout some expletives if he/she refuses to cooperate!!!
Best regards,

i have my girlfriend's number as my report number.. what if were together and we got robbed both our phones are taken away.. a multiple report number would be a good addition to IIWPO
The changes I'd like to see done to IIWPO include:
a) not using "IIWPO" or 'xda-developer' in the registry (user customisable registry key)
b) user customisable executable file name (IIWPO_startup is like a dead giveaway)
c) not storing owner name & number 'in the clear' (a simple XOR to hide it would be just as effective)
d) a hash of the entire owner info page (not just the last name) so unit will resend an SMS if any info changes
e) a new sms is resent after a preset time (eg: every 24/48/120 hours for example), regardless if owner info has changed or not.
I also like the idea of multiple number reporting.
a,b,c) Considering the concept of IIWPO is 'security by obscurity'; it will help if one could hide it more effectively. (no one is going to bother too much about bluetooth.exe or msn_update.exe in the startup folder for example...)
d) Most people get their name right; then meddle with the other bits of information as time goes on - it'd be good to get 'updated' info as and when it happens.
e) Consider it a 'keep alive' thing, so we'll know the unit is still in use, and can continue to keep in touch with the new owner =) I've no moral issues burning up the credit of someone who refuses to give me back my property either. =P
If nothing else, we'd be able to know when the unit gets reflashed, and can quiety say goodbye to our unit after not hearing from it for a while... =(
Is IIWPO still being maintained by the author, or anyone on xda-developers? If not, is the source available? I might be interested in following up on it (time permitting...)
Edited to add: A really vicious version of the IIWPO would possibly send out:
a) phone numbers stored in the SIM card
b) phone numbers stored in the addres book
c) recently dialed/received phone numbers
d) recently sent/received SMS phone numbers
Not all in one go; but in bits and pieces (eg: every 20 startups; send phone numbers of last 5 SMSs sent/received + last 5 phone calls dialed/received).
That would allow us get in touch with his friends and would possibly aid in getting the unit returned (use your imagination... probably easier to get them tell you who/where he is, rather than to get them convince him to return it...)
Probably this would add too much bloat to IIWPO; but hey, could be useful... =P
WOW, ok.
First of all - I registered 2 this forum less than a week ago,
and great job for doing these kind of things.
second - where can i d/l the prog?
and last another idea: when some1 steals ur pda he's usually gonna sell it over. meaning he made his money.
HOWEVER - if even after a HR after changing sims (maybe even without) there will be a picture message saying:
"You cannot use this phone"
"This phone can only be used by me - *name*"
"However, Im willing to buy this phone back from you. call +......"
there wont be a place on the screen to enter the code.
however - the phones' user knows he can type his password and unlock the phone. you might even integrate a handwriting recognition programm for signature or somthing but that will be super hard, i know.
another option is that when seeing this message user has to touch 4 corners of the screen with the stylus in a specific order, then he'll have a please enter password screen.
any comment?
is it do-able?

hi guys,
am new to this forum and i just got the HTC touch HD for about 2wks great fone installed a lot of stuff but am trying to develop a program that i can track my phone on a web browser. can anyone help me on how to communicate with my phone and get the gps cordinates.
not sure about this, sorry if i get it wrong but maybe you can have a look at this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=482249
what am actually look for is like sending may be an sms to my phone and getting the gps coordinates really need help pls.
maybe this one?
http://smartphonetracker.blogspot.com/
Sprite are currently doing a special HTC package which includes backup plus a secuirty application which can track your phone using the GPS
SPRITE HTC Special Offer
Just to mention that as far as I know any solution includes comunicating with the SIM card. If you want to track your phone in case it gets stolen, well... forget it. I don't believe any thief will be stupid enough to leave the SIM card in the phone and/or the phone turned on. If you want it for another scenario - MAYBE it will work.
you can buy theese lil tracker things they tiny lil sticker things which u can put on cars/phones etc. They can be tracked and reported to the police.
just want to find a way to communicated with the phone it for a project.
