A while back ago, I came on here to introduce a new site called Peekamo.com. It is a mobile social network that allows free text messaging.
Up until now, only Canadians got the 100% benefit from peekamo because US users still get charged for incoming text. Therefore we only solved half the problem for our US friends.
I am the lead developer and co-founder of Peekamo and have recently been working on a WM6 version that allows you to use data (wifi, cellular, activesync or bluetooth) to send and receive text messages for absolutely free.
If anyone is interested in helping us beta text this new application please message me or contact us direct by gonig to peekamo.com and using the contact us email.
Peekamo derives it's revenue by placing an ad up to 30 characters at the bottom of each message. However for the period of the beta test mobile app users will receive no advertising as a bonus incentive when receiving messages using the Peekamo mobile client.
A little tech background on the app and what are it's features:
Send/Receive text messages
Update your status message
Search for friends and groups
Multi-recipient texting
Peekamo's what's peekin' (what's going on with your friends feature)
Upload photos from your camera
Upload video from your camera
Look up profiles
Edit your profile
and more as we move forward.
The ultimate goal is to do everything that you can do on Peekamo.com, but on your mobile.
Thank you and hope to capture a few people's interest.

Can you send text over your wifi connection with Cingular or any other US carrier? You will be able to with Peekamo. Unlimited data plan on Cingular costs 19.99, what would you rather have? Unlimited data or a unlimited text messaging plan?
Peekamo is also going world wide. Does your unlimited plan let you text your friends around the world for free? You unlimited texting plan also does not cover texting to Canada or when roaming.

Sorry everyone,
We've had a little bit of a set back and had to re-optimize data transfer for gprs and 3g connections, primary testing today confirms that we have achieved our target and we are now reading the application for it's release.
The new release date for the Peekamo Mobile Client is Friday. For those of you who have responded already, you will receive instructions and a cab file install to the email you have provided. If you have not created your Peekamo account yet, I suggest you do so right away and familiarize yourself with the service.
We have limited space available now for the first round of beta testing so if you're interested, please reply to us quickly as we expect to run out available spots by tomorrow.
Once again, thanks to everyone who has shown some interest and is willing to help out.
Cheers.

Is there a way to track how many minutes/messages/data I use in a month? I'm in Canada so data plans suck! Any recommendations?
Thanks.
i am fine with the builtin call timer. but for data, spb gprs monitor can't be a wrong choice.
In BatteryStatus you can allow it to keep track of your call times and data usage. Its on the today screen as a plugin as well which might be good for you to monitor!
SPB GPRS Monitor is a bit more sophisticated, but i rekon BatteryStatus would do the job (Great app that one).
SPB GPRS(3G aswell) Monitor works well for me (can even export to file)
Batterystatus EX
I recommend batterystatus, because it's simple and powerfull... and free.
You need to install also batterystatus extended version, because the main application only monitors battery memory and processor.
You can have several indicators on today screen, that can be customized via a xml file to show in one line the indicators you want in the order of your choice.
Also it has small footprint, and it's an all in one solution as might replace other indicators you are using.
+1 for Batterystatus
Great free app.
The calls are logged to an XML file, which you can copy off your device for offline backups...
Hudson mobile's phone dashboard
Hi
I use Hudson Mobile's phone dashboard.
Its very customisable to tell you your peek and cheaprate/free calls so if you have a contract with allowances and different tariffs it works with this.
Works with MMS and SMS counters and if you have a contract where MMS calls can use your SMS allowance, it allows for this too.
Also they are receptive to ideas - I requested a feature which they implemented in version 2.0 earlier this year.
Works with WM6 with one caviet - if you use a dialer which puts SMS and MMS in the same directory (some early cooked rooms did this) then you wont be able to differenciate the SMS and MMS count.
Personally I love this tool and it has saved me from going over my quota in a month.

You said it works with wm6? So this not the problem it doesn't work with my mobile.... I have a problem with the registration. I can't find the field to enter the owner name, but I can only find the field to enter code. Any solution please? i love this app
hey guys, i'm sorry if i'm a bit slow at this, but here it is. I have a 8528, which i unlocked and am using a tmobile sim card. I am using K's rom 1.3a. I have installed the Oz instant messenger from the t-mobile extended rom i found elsewhere. Now my question is, Oz is a text message based messenger (which is why it appeals to me, i have unlimited texts) now whenever i sign on to aim, it connects to edge. I don't believe ill be charged for the edge access, but i don't want to kill my battery by being connected to edge. anyway if anyone has any ideas, it would be much appreciated. Thank you very much all.
Do you mean that OZ (give us a link to info about it) is SMS based messenger system? Or maybe you just confuse "text-based" (using letters, not voice) with SMS (Short Message System in GSM)? So far I've seen only regular data-connection messengers, so it's perfectly normal it requires data connection (like GPRS/EDGE/3G/UMTS/HSDPA) to communicate with IM servers and you are billed for data transfer (price of crouse depends on your agreement and price list).
Oz, which is the basic messenger program that comes with at&t as well as t-moile is sms based. so why would it be connecting to edge?
Does anyone know how to make WM6.1 work with the Tmoblie Trigger mail? I installed 6.1 and tried to do the WM5/6 hack that works but had no luck. I had 6.1 on my phone for a few days and liked a lot of its features, but really like the Tmobile Trigger mail so went back to 6.

What is the trigger mail feature just wondering?
Trigger Mail Feature
TMobile has a hybrid push mail that was available under WM5. Basically what happens is you give TMobile.com you email address, POP & SMTP settins plus password. They then monitor you inbox. When an email is recieved thier server generates a text message that triggers you phone to check your email. The text message is invisible to the user and is automatically deleted. The advantage is that you do not have to set you phone to check email every 5min, 15 mins etc. You phone only checks when triggered to do so.
Here is probably a better discription;
http://www.modaco.com/content/htc-tornado-faraday-variants-tornado-modaco-com/239456/how-to-configure-us-t-mobile-push-mail-on-any-rom/#entry854119
Anyone have a solutuion for this? Anyone using this feature? Am I the only one that still does? I have 3 email addresses that TM triggers my phone for, most emails arrive in my phone within minutes of being sent.
Uses a txt message? I guess that wouldnt work for me. I dont need unlimited txts, but have unlimited data...so I just have wm 6.1 poll my inboxes every 5 minutes
Call T-Mobile and ask them?
Tmobile does not support WM6.1 on the Dash, and they don't support trigger mail on anything past WM5.
Anyone? You guys always amaze me with the way you can figure anything out, don't let me down now. Am I the only one who uses this? Is there something better out there?
Here I will look into this and get to you asap
I dont think T-Mo charges your account for the trigger mail sms.
If you don't have unlimited Text they will charge you. I am lucky and still have the Tmobile Mail and More plan that includeds unlimited data, text, sms, wifi and 1000 min for $69. I will hold on to that plan until they come up with 3G.
The trigger mail does work great though, don't know why they quit supporting it after WM5

How can we still get this?
You have to go to your account on Tmobile.com then goto Communications Tools. Once there you will see a section that labled "About E-Mail' Click on the learn more tab. Once here you will see a picture of your Dash, scroll down to the bottom of the screen and you will is a link that says 'Still want to continue using Windows Mobile 5' if you click here it will take you to a screen where you can set you can set up you email boxes. Basically you tell Tmobile your email addresses, passwords, and pop/smtp settings. Then turn on the alerts feature.
Now Tmobile will silently alert your phone when ever an email is received in any of your configured accounts. This SMS alert triggers your phone to sign on and retrieve then new messages.
If you are using WM6 you have to add several files from WM5 to make your phone work correctly. I have these files but wont post them here unless a moderator tells me it is ok. The files needed from WM5 are
MyEmSMP.exe
TMMEPluginEnabler.exe
InBoxDriverSrv.dll
TmMapirule.dll
TmUtil.dll
tmyemail.dll
For complete instructions on how to configure your phone goto
http://www.modaco.com/content/htc-tornado-faraday-variants-tornado-modaco-com/239456/how-to-configure-us-t-mobile-push-mail-on-any-rom/#entry854119
With this enabled your phone only checks email when triggered instead of every 5, 15 minutes depending on how your phone is currently set.
It works great, I would just like it to work with WM6.1 also, I am just smart enough to make it happen.

I still remember reading on the T-Mo site the Trigger SMS are free but it might be based on having a certain plan.
You have to read the fine print. They are free if you have a SMS plan. Each trigger = 1 text message. When they started doing this with the first Tmobile PocketPC phone the plans for that phone all came with unlimited text. I started with the original Tmobile PPC phone, then the HP6300 and had that when I went to my Dash. I still have the plan from my 6300, Tmobile would probably love me to give it up since I get everything for $69, Tzones, Data, Text, 1000min, Nights & Weekends....
I have been using this on every phone since it first came out on the T-Mobile HP IPAQ. I do not have unlimited test and it does not use text but triggers the phone to convert 701 codes to the actual email. Now you do have to have thier internet option at 19.95 a month. I too love it and have switched from 6.1 back to 6.0 because of this single application. Thats ow much I love it.. (one thing that is different is I am using a PPC)
Glad to hear that I am not the only one who loves Trigger Mail. I really want to move to 6.1, if someone could just get this to work it would be great.
Is there any free texting app for wp7?
Im coming from iPhone, so i was pretty much used to apps like TextFree or Text now.
Is there anything similar yet in Wp7? or any app on the way?
Thanks,
Abhinay
I have a question about a texting app for WP7. I don't have a plan with SMS messaging and I am wondering if there exists a free app on the market that has the ability to text a phone through internet without using the SMS feature. I know that both Android and iOS have an app of the sort.

Look for an app called "Text Me". There's a free version & a paid version. The free version doesn't do attachments, but it works really well.
Everyone you wanna "text" has to have Text Me & it's available for iphones as well.
@ycavan
thnx dude.. cant believe i missed it.. lol.. though buggy, it does the work..
thnx
Not really a free text app then is it... if everyone has to have the application it's basically the same as the Facebook messages!
Be careful with those free text apps though - it's quite common for the receiver to be charged for the messages. I know in the US they get charged anyway (wtf) but elsewhere it's different.

Or even call! Sometimes it's cheaper - depends if there's a connection charge on your tariff. There wasn't on my old network, and a minute's worth of call was cheaper than a SMS so... no brainer.
does the rest of the world not have unlimited text messaging? Or are y'all just too cheap?
What about google voice?

Yeh, we do, but I don't have enough friends to justify the unlimited text package
I think in a perfect world - if everyone was an XDA nerd - we'd all email each other. Majority of my friends still don't have smartphones, though, and those that do still prefer to text. My email's set to manual check anyway because push is stressful (sometimes I like forgetting about work and who I have to pay on ebay)
What's annoying, though, is that I read somewhere that text messages are the most marked up product of all time, and yet nobody seems bothered by this.
Its because no alternative has a monopoly on it. If 70% of smartphone users used whatsapp sms would be cheaper cause most people would start cancelling their sms packages.
Im and free texting apps are fragmented, so most people have to fall back to sms, anyways.
Also, some of those apps arw battery-aggressive (on OSes that multitask).
That is why lots of BB users stay with RIM for BBM.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Tiny text is kinda similar to BBM...i use that to talk to my friends that have a wp7
Bbm preinstalled. Getting people to all install and use these apps is very difficult.
The bigger your contact list, it gets exponentially more difficult - to the point where it isn't worth it.
Was like that for me and whatsapp. No one else wants to install/buy it, so why bother keeping it installes myself?

My app called "Free Texting" just got approved today. Go check it out
Use Google Voice. GoVoice is a great app for utilizing Google Voice for texting, voicemails, and outgoing calls. I haven't paid for SMS on my cell plan for years and I use texting through GoVoice all day. The $2.99 paid version supports immediate Push notifications too. I think the free one might support Push in the future, but $2.99 is not a bad investment in the interim... considering that the cheapest SMS plan on any cell carrier is like $5 a month and that's not even for unlimited.

Does this only work in the us? I have never heard anybody here using it.
Is there any apps that I can use to send messages to my brothers blackberry in dubai for free. It costs me 20p a text on virgin.
Any suggestions appreciated thanks
Whatsapp, you both need the app and a data connection. I think for now it's still free (at least on android) but after a year it's like 3 dollar per year.
If you download the app it asks for sms permissions but that is only to verify your phone number, the actual messaging will take place over data connection.
Thanks just installed that and have been sending pictures and chatting for free.
I would pay 3$ or whatever well worth it
