Sending email via SMS - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

After flashing my Cingular 8525 device with LVSW's latest WM6 rom, I can no longer send text (sms) messages to an email address as I was able to do before.
I found a workaround for this actually. I found this on wikibooks:
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Cingular_Wireless_FAQ#How_Can_I_Send_E-mail_From_Any_Cingular_Phone.3F
Basically instead of sending an email direct to an email address, you would send it to 121 with the email address at the beginning of the message body followed by a space. I tested it and it works, but it is a pain as I have to manually type the email address rather than choosing it from my address book.
Does anyone know of a permanent fix for this problem? The problem seems to be that there is no longer a gateway between SMS and email. I tried searching the registry for a possible fix but nothing jumps out at me. I also tried searching the forums and the wiki but to no avail.
Kudos to LVSW for a great rom, BTW...

This one might help,
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Inbox\Settings]
"SMStoSMTPShortCode"="121"

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried adding that value to my registry but it still isn't letting me send an SMS to an email address. Here's the exact error message:
"Cannot recognize one or more recipients or the address is not valid. Would you like to send the message anyway?"
So I hit yes then it says:
"The Text Message account cannot be used to send e-mail messages."
Anybody have any more ideas? Tomorrow I'm going to get a hold of a buddy at work that has a Cingular 8525 and see if I can find the settings in his registry.

Is this something that will be fixed possibly with the Cingular apps cab install? Or is that only applications and not settings such as this?

Try this one

Maybe it could resolve
Hi,
Have the same error message on my TyTN when trying to send or reply to any SMS I receive.
Have found a solution on the web to resolve this and remove the error message :
go to messaging/menu/options/address tab
(in, contacts, get email addresses from) : choose [all e-mail fields].
Hope it can help some users ...
Regards to all

Thanks.
It did help. Solved m SMS problem.

Exchange SP2 Push Mail Providers

Hi all,
Just upgrading to new Imate ROM. Now it seems that Universal has push email can anyone recommend an Exchange SP2 direct push email provider for consumer market? Many thanks for taking the time to read.
Tom C (UK)
The onlyone I know for the moment is 4smartphone.net - if you find any better (means cheaper), let me know!
Some report are saying 4smartphone.net takes 30 seconds to push an email to your device, rather than 5 seconds or less that others are getting via their own exchange servers.
Its worth asking these website exchange account providers what frequency they run the push 'heartbeat' at - you might end up with a big bill if they haven't set the Exchange/firewall to a reasonable rate.
Device SMS Address
I've just signed up for the 4smartphone trial, but Orange are completely unable to tell me what the Device SMS Address should be. They don't have a clue what this is about. I was guessing [email protected], but that doesn't work.
Does anyone know what it should be?

If you're using the aku2 rom then you don't need an sms address. The MSFP/Direct Push works via http not sms. Waaaaaay better!
Settings
I think it is that version. I'm using the new ROM version 1.30.68 with Radio version 1.09.00. I can see the push mail icon in Comm Manager, but it's greyed out, so I'm not sure where to go from here. The 4smartphone support pages are not exactly informative.
Can anyone point me to a website about setting this up? My searches are not getting me far.
Thanks.

Got it working
Just need to ignore the instructions on the 4smartphone web page about SMS Device.
From the moment of clicking send on my Desktop to the email arriving in my device inbox the time taken is about 25 secs, which includes gmail forwarding it to the 4smartphone address.
4smartPhone Help!!
Glad to hear that you got the SMS problem sorted which help me out too. I can now sync with contacts but what do I do for the email. Do I have to set an account up on WM5 which I have done but there is no push coming through I have to manually send and receive. Any help much welcome. Thanks
You need to set it up using active sync in WM5. You will need to add a server (secure.4smartphone.net) then your username, password and domain (4smartphone). It will then sync using the GPRS connection.
I've got Outlook desktop, Outlook Web Access (with smartphone) and Outlook on WM5 all synchronizing nicely. My only problem is that I have three pop email account on Outlook desktop, but 4smartphone only seems to work with one.
And just to add the obvious, you need to have email being forward to the address that you got @smartphone.com

4Smartphone.net are US based, where email to SMS is very common. It took the Americans about three years to wake up to the fact that everyone else in the world has to pay for SMS messages to be sent - hence the new push technology from Microsoft.
What they are referring to is a feature known as AUTD (always up to date) which is how Exchange used to do push. A specially created SMS text message would be sent to your phone which told your device that something had changed, and it would then do a sync.
I am told that it worked very well - it is just unfortunate that for everyone outside of the USA the feature would cost many thousands to run for each single user.
Simon.
4smartPhone Help!!
Thanks for your quick reply. I have forwarding set up and all the correct settings for Active Syn in WM5, UserName, Password, Domain and Save password. Under the Options in ActiveSync there now appears and Exchange Server with the following selected Contacts, Calendar, E-Mail, Tasks.
I'm still not sure though what to do with the email all the above are syncing via 3g. In the Messages section do I have to create a new account and if so what are the correct setting for this?
Thanks again for the help and suggestions.
Tom C.
When it syncs with the Exchange server it automatically goes into the Outlook email inbox on your device. If you've previously been synchronizing with the desktop it wipes out those emails, which is why I'm trying the Pro version of 4smartphone and synchronising all three.
Have you checked if test emails you are sending are reaching the 4smartphone email address? You can do that by logging into the web version of Outlook via the link on their website.
Also the push email icon in Com Manager should now be working and it will say Microsoft DirectPush at the top.
That may not be much help, but I am also completely new to this.
4smartPhone
Once again thanks for the help. Just about got it sorted as I read your reply. The missing link for me is that the you don't have to sent up a seperate email account I was looking for server addresses extra but all those go under ActiveSync. Getting mails fine now but not too sure yet about sending them. Are yours sending fine or is there a delay?
Thanks again, you are still once step ahead of me
I've got Push email working with mail2web.com and have a few questions:
I've gota couple of email addresses that won't forward to my mail2web email account and I don't really want to use mail2web's harvester as that only checks once every hour, so I was wondering whether it's possible to set Outlook on my PC to synce with my mail2web account so that my PC will download emails from my POP accounts, then upload them to my mail2web server, which then pushes the emails to my phone?
Or is there a simpler way to do it?
Also, when I reply to an email that's been pushed the reply address is always my mail2web email address, which is a pain as it confuses people and gets rejected by my email groups. How can I change the default address that my replies go from, or even just change them on each email as I reply?
I'm sure I'll have more questions soon.! Cheers.

Getting a text message every time a new Earthlink email arrives

Hey guys, I'm hoping someone here might have had this problem...
Okay, I had this problem with WM5 too but somewhow managaed to get it to stop. No such luck with WM6. Here's the problem:
I set up my Earthlink email via the "New E-mail Account..." funtion. Works fine. However, now whenever I get a new email at my earthlink address I _automatically_ get a text message along the lines of this:
701
F: "Palm Store Newsletter"<Palm_
S: Through Sunday May 20, 2007 -P
Sent to <my address>
ID:345543456:1
In my email settings I've set it to Automatic Send/Receive to _Manual_. I can't think of anything else that would be causing my Dash to retrieve email headers like this. But its driving me nuts! because I'm getting spammed by text messages all day.
I've tried reconfiguring my email, rebooting, doublechecking my settings. Gah!
Go to your tmobile account on line go toyur email and disable alerts they are not supported on WM6 -rather they expert you to go to an exchange server
Wow - that was it. I had no idea TMobile would go that far to charge me for text messages Thank you muchly ljcaz!
aol email
i have a similar problem except my problem is i have aol set up in my email on WM6. on WM5 i was able to check email and it would stay on server. the new WM6 for some reasone even delets it off ther server once i delete on my phone. i have the setting on the phone set to leave on server but i dont know how to fix the problem any ideas

IMAP Mail Download Error

Well I finally got my TyTn, TNT flashed, unlocked and good to go!
However, I have one question/issue.
Until I can get Blackberry Connect to work (how do I create a PIN?) I am using my IMAP4 account.
I did this all the time with my old 6700 and had no problems, but under WM6, it will start to download/send email and crash most of the way through.
Any thoughts?
Thank you!
Yeah I'd noticed this problem recieving IMAP mail in WM6 on my Hermes. WM5 worked without a problem. With WM6 it will receive about 50% of my email and then say something like "failed to download email". I then click on the 'Send/Receive' option again to get the rest of the email. It's not a show stopper but is a little annoying. If anyone has any suggestions I'd be grateful. Maybe there are some timeout settings in the registry that I don't know about.

Cant send email

So all of a sudden, I can not send emails from my dash. I can receive them just fine, I have no issues with mms, internet or anything else.
I have the kavana 6.1, ( love it) the full blown 20 dollar internet deal.
I have tried to completely delete my gmail account and re run the setup and still no sending emails. I can not send from my other email accounts either from this phone.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Jeff

Are you using the right entries for the incoming and outgoing mail server?
See this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=396126&highlight=smtp
Moderator: might be a good idea to make the thread a sticky.
So my problem seems to be the same as the listed in that thread, I just redid my "connections wizard" and it is sending now. For how long, I dont know.
Thank you all and I will keep looking here for a solution.
Jeff
Jeff: read all the entries in the thread. It is a known problem and there is a registry hack to allow you to enter a valid SMTP server string into the requisite OEM field. The standard WM6.1 build ships with this value set to NULL (or even worse it might be set to " ")

For those having Email Sending Problems (outgoing SMTP).

I've been having email sending problems through my operator Vodafone Ireland (using my TP2).
I'll keep this post updated with any further information that I receive in the hope that it will help any other folks out there with E-Mail sending problems.
Last Update: 25/08/2009 @ 14:31 IST
Email sending works fine over WiFi for me (others describe complete failures, and solutions to same, below). However over GPRS/3G I get the following error:
"The message(s) could not be sent. Check that you have network coverage and that your account information is correct. Then try sending again."
For those with similar problems, this is what I have found so far.
The only way that I have found to "fix" this problem is to delete my email account settings and re-enter.
However beware if sending ever fails again then it may continue to fail until you delete/re-apply the settings again!
This could be due to a Microsoft "feature" in WM 6.1 to allow mobile operators substitute their own outgoing email server for use with their networks.
The alternative server is meant to be sent OTA into a non-editable OEM Registry setting on the Phone (apparently).
The server name substitution then only occurs when there is a send failure.
If the operator does not support this feature the substituted email server will be blank and will continue to be set to blank for the email account until it gets deleted and re-setup!
Microsoft have issued a hotfix for this problem way back in 2008 and according to Barneyabz (below) this fix should be in the TP2 ROM Build. However, I may be seeing another variation of this problem due to network roaming. When I was in France I was able to send emails over GPRS/3G. It was when I came home that email sending started to fail. My mail account could have been trying to use the France email server when I was back home. (No way to prove this - of course).
Another issue that will cause the above error message when sending email is if your Mail Server blocks port 25 (and uses another port instead). This will cause mail send to fail on all connections (GPRS/3G/WiFi). Adding the port is really easy, at the end of the outgoing mail server address just add :xxx where xxx is the port number. For example: auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk:587 (Credit: Barneyabz)
I found various threads with various fixes that didn't work for me but may work for you so I include the links as follows.
Note that any of the "fixes" that include deleting and re-setup of email settings may not last. Email sending may get broken again if there is any other send failure.
Links as follows:
Microsoft has created a hotfix for this issue in 2008 but it doesn't install for me (WM version error). Probably because this "fix" is already in my ROM.

Hope this helps!
If anyone has any further information please tag it on!
I had this exact same problem and came across the fix you mention, but none worked for me.
I found out that is for an older build, whcih is why Microsofts hotfix won't install for you (or me) and I understand Microsoft fixed the issue in our build. Although my error message was the same it turned out to be because my mail server blocks port 25 when setting up my mail account as IMAP. Got the right port number from 1and1 and all worked fine (took me three days to find this out and resolve though!)
Cheers
Barney

Hi Barney,
Thanks for the information. I assume that if you had an outgoing port problem that sending over WiFi didnt work either?
Thanks,
Mike.
Nope, it wouldn't work either over wifi nor over 3g. The minute I changed the outgoing mail server address to include the revised port number it worked fine. Took me three days to figure it out though! Adding the port is really easy, at the end of the outgoing mail server address just add :xxx where xxx is the port number. Mine now reads auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk:587
Good luck
cheers
Barney
