Built-In GPS - HTC Excalibur

All,
I am confused about the GPS in the Dash. Can this be used with GPS software? Or is it kinda useless?
Thanks.

There is no built-in GPS.

lol! there is no GPS. You can use a Bluetooth GPS with Google maps and other software though.

i use google maps cuz i dont want to hassle around with a gps receiver...plus its pretty awsome how they use your cell signal to get ur location...wish they could get it better to an exact location and maybe other companies will start using this technology as well...i am a cheap ass i kno...lolz
I use MapQuest Navigator v5.. its flawless I use Google Maps at times and a couple other toys (VITO Navigator II for off roading for example) but I mainly use MapQuest Nav
just wanting to know. is there any other software that does not have to use gps to get your location the way that google maps does. thanks.

I have Garmin installed on mine and it work fine. It should detect the GPS receiver once program is loaded. If not then check Tools>Settings>System>Remote GPS and see if Com4: Com4: is displayed.
I use Garmin too..and i have not figured out what makes it work.
Fact is, that when i install it and run it for the first few times, it does not work but then it starts working..crazy stuff going on and i am still trying to figure out what triggers it

Are you trying this at home? GPS usually doesn't work in buildings. I use iGo8 and have no problem at all with it but outside or in a car. Try going out and the use it- it should work...just wait some time to get connected with a satellite and before doing that download the positions of the satellites with quickGPS. In that way the whole process is faster

Psycomatis,is this a new install of garmin and ask you to connect to bluetooth gps receiver?

GPS module not working

Hi friends
Since about 2 months I can no longer get gps fix with my HTC Desire. My 2 year old kids love it as much as I do, but unfortunelly they let it drop in the ground too often.
I'm afraid that the gps antenna is damaged, because the fact is that the gps really isn't working anymore.
A few years ago I used a windows mobile 5 phone with TomTom, and it accepted an external bluetooth antenna as wel as the integrated gps module.
Unfortunelly, TomTom is not suported on android. Do you know any android navigation software that accepts a bluetooth external antenna so that I can keep using my desire as a gps device?
Thanks in advance.
Hello,
are you sure it's the antenna's fault? Maybe some settings are off (i.e. you're turning on 3G instead of GPS?). What sort of external antenna do you want to plug into it?

Hi
I´m not sure if the problem is really the antenna, but for sure it is not about the settings. I have this phone for about 1,5 years, so I know what to turn on.
Have already made factory settings and reconfigurated everything.
I know that the old phones without gps modules could be bluetotth paired with an external gps antenna. At least the TomTom supported this option. The question is to know if any android navigation software supports it now.

I found some very usefull information here:

Already ordered the gps bluetooth antenna. I will post the results later.

Using Tablet as Car GPS

Hi Team,
I'm using my Acer A100 as a Car Tablet (it's in the dash and working) but the problem is that it's GPS is very slow and many times Synic (the App) acting on me as looking for sat's
looking if someone else is using it like that and has GPS issues or any recommendations for external GPS to use with it
Thanks
I've used my Motorola Xoom for quite some time, bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab2 today to finally install into the dash properly, cant say I've ever had any issues with GPS using either Co-Pilot or Google Navigation (the Xoom has been in the dash but its a little too big and looks really stupid).
If your looking for an external module then anything based on sirf3 chipset is usually reliable, there are newer chipsets but I've always found them to be cheap and reliable when doing projects.
I've never had the need to use an external GPS with an Android device, or even if its possible.
Good Luck!

If you use an external GPS receiver you will need an interface. When I used my G Tab for navi I used a program call Blue GPS or similar. There a few in the Play Store. I can't see why you should unless the A100 has GPS issues, or it is surrounded by metal in your dash.

I have always used CoPilot and really like it. I had Garmin on my WinMo phone several years ago and loved that but CoPilot is almost as good. IIRC CoPilot is on sale right now and will come with 12 months of traffic for free.
haha where do you attach the gps to? How would you use a tablet that's 9.7" as a gps, would you mount it to your wind-shield?
The best to use is a 7 inch tablet with integrated GPS. As for software beside Google Maps wich you cannot use offline , you may use : Navigon ,Copilot ,iGO ,etc
