This forum has been of great use ad all the experts seem to love it. I must say you guys rock.
I have an XDA Exec which has the O2 software built in. When I reset the device it automatically installs the O2 Active. I then remove it manually frm the Add Remove programs. I was wondering if there is any way by which I can remove the O2 software entirely or delete its installation files so that I can free more space and also remove the unwanted software.
Its simple, but, do use the search first
Anyway, you should unlock+unhide the extended rom and then manually delete those files from there
There is also an option during install that asks if you want a 'corporate' or personal install... if you select corporate, it bypasses all the O2 crap and does a clean OS install. It will ask you for a code when you select corporate, and if i remember correctly it's 0506.
Once you've installed as corporate, then it'd be worth unlocking the extROM like kdskamal says, that way you've got some extra storage space and don't have to do the corporate thing on every hard reset.
Hope it helps.

I have been offered a O2 XDA II but I am on Vodafone, it has been unlocked but I want to get rid of all the O2 things on it and make it like an i-mate. Is this possible and if so how?
Cheers
Hi,
I'm on Vodafone too, and it's quite easy to get rid of the O2 stuff. Simply go to Start/System/Remove Programs and you should find 3 O2 programs at the bottom of the list (assuming you've installed other stuff). These can be uninstalled.
NOTE : Before you do this, go into Start/System/Today and set the Today screen to Windows Default.
Don't worry if the uninstall shows things it can't delete, you can reset your XDA 2 and delete the offending directories if you wish afterwards.
I've done this process lots of times and it works great.
Hope this helps.
and if it complaine about missing something when starting up find the offending shortcut in windows\Startup and remove it
If you want to be 100% sure everything's gone and you have a an O2 free phone, then you will need to unlock the extended rom and rename the config.txt file to config.txt.bak or something, then hardreset. The device will not load the customisations and you will have a clean phone.
Afterwards unlock the extended rom and then selectively install the applications you want, - caller id, camera etc.

Did someone of you all talented and gifted people found a way to delete\add programs in the JJ extended rom?
i keep deleting them using the total commander and they keep coming back after a hard reset.
As i understand:
1) All cellular network operator specifications found in the extended rom are taking a lot of memory space that can be freed.
2) The anti-virus program is slowing the whole thing operation as it is allways running on the background.
3) I know other cab files i would like to add to the extended rom in order that they will be installed automatically after a hard reset.
What do you think?
You can find the three cab files for the CA anti-virus, backgammon, and Skype, on the xda ftp site. Go to wiki.xda-developers.com, find the ftp link most of the way down that page, scroll down to Universal, click on the link under Universal uploads, then click on the extended rom folder on the ftp site and Joe Bongo.zip under that.
Use add / remove program to uninstall these three programs - anti-virus, backgammon, and Skype. After they're uninstalled, in turn, tap on the cap file for each of these three apps and when the install dialog comes up, choose to install TO THE SD CARD.
It says there is a problem installing the anti-virus program on the SD, but it's not true, it works fine from the SD card. Putting the three apps anti-virus, backgammon, and Skype on the SD card frees up about 4.2MB of space in ROM (storage).
Don't hard reset and these apps won't wind up back in the ROM. You don't need to hard reset unless you are installing an new ROM.
Alternately, you can go the more involved route in the link below to free up a little more space. If you get the Joe Bongo extended ROM, you'll see that there are 7 other cab files in the extended ROM. They take up about 0.5 MB of space. I'm not going to hard reset my device to save 0.5 MB of ROM space, because it's not that much space and I'll lose all of my settings on hard reset.

Hi cool_case and thank you for your reply
what i wanted is something totaly different
1) i wanted to delete the files i do not need from the extended rom (to free up some memory)
2) i wanted to add programs i do need, to the extended rom (to make installation automatic after a hard reset)
as you probably know, when i remove programs allready installed (like the anti-virus) i am never 100% sure what registry changes were made (altough i am deleting all changes i know of, using a registry editor).
Hi aseptic,
One of the xda-developers aces will be fairly like to figure out how to create a special ROM image that doesn't have have the extended ROM stuff in it. You may be familar with the Anansky hack (and later easier methods) posted in early summer here for the xda mini (JAM) that freed up about 27MB of 'storage'.
okay i will be waiting
The thing about deleting things from the extended rom to free up memory is that the extended rom is already partitioned so deleting things from the extended rom will not actually free up space. It will only prevent the deleted things from installing the next time you hard reset.
We will need some sort of other hack to free up this partitioned space (big storage hack). Just deleting them from the extended rom will not do what you're hoping for.
This WORKED for me!!
Following the instructions listed on this page I was able to reclaim 15M+ for Storage and Programs on my JasJar.
http://wiki.howardforums.com/pocketpc/index.php/Selectively_Bypassing_the_Extended_ROM
Not to bore you guys with result details here is how it played out with application installation:
After hard reset with Extended ROM bypass (eliminating Backgammon/Antivirus/Skype)
Storage 39.52 Program 28.27
After first ActiveSync 4.1 Storage 34.53 Program 21.29
Installs with soft reset after each:
Resco File Explorer Storage 33.31 Program 21.39 (?)
SPB Imageer ' 30.03 21.35
Pocket Artist 3 28.08 21.55
Listpro 4 27.24 21.45
PhatPad 26.42 20.84
MS Pocket Streets 5 25.92 20.75
TCPMP 24.28 20.25
Magic Button 24.15 20.44
NewsBreak 23.32 20.25
also on 2G SD Card Pocket Informant / MS Reader / Weather Panel
Sync includes 1,235 Contacts / 3 years of Calendar / 2 years of email (3 accounts) (attachments on SD) etc.
Bottom line Storage 19.67 Program 14.86
I wouldn't consider this too shabby.
Darn sight better than with the fluff on Extended ROM.
Hopefully this may be of interest

Thanks for the link to the hofo wiki with the very clear instructions for bypassing the extended_ROM installation.
What I had done before was use add-remove programs to remove Backgammon, the CA anti-virus, and Skype. Then, I used the cab files for these three apps found on the xda ftp site to install these three to the SD. This saved about 4.2MB of storage. People had said that this method didn't really remove the apps from ROM.
But, that's apparently not the case. I followed the instructions for bypassing the extended ROM installation above and wound up with about 1MB more of "storage" memory than was obtained by just removing the three apps above manually using add-remove. So, the method above works is a little better, because while you can manually remove the backgammon, anti-virus and skype, you can't manually remove the carrier settings.
Another good thing came of doing this -- Sunnysoft backup did a nice job of restoring settings, including Today Screen plug-in settings Haven't found any omissions yet, but as I don't sync pim data, can't comment on whether Sunnysoft does that.

Hi guys, i'm fairly new with my o2 XDA exec and was wondering......
1. My device is an o2 XDA exec which comes unlocked, if i change my rom to the latest orange rom will it remain unlocked?
2, I have backed up my XDA to my memory card using SPB Backup, if i run this exe. file from the memory card, will it just reinstall all my apps/configurations to the orange rom?
3, Can anyone tell me where to find the latest orange uk rom which ships on their device, the M5000, and do you think its better than the o2 rom?
Thanks for any advice given
1.yes it will still be unlocked. I've installed the latest imate rom on my exec since it came out and I highly recommend it. I use an Orange pay monthly simcard and have configured gprs and mms on my exec without problems.
2. yes it should do but I would recommend that u backup the pim.vol whic ch contains all your user data like contacts etc then re-install your applcations.
3. definatley recommend the latest imate rom personally but others may suggest the orange.
HTH
Thanks bukwit for your quick reply. These questions may make me sound really dumb but here goes....
1, How do i backup the pim.vol, and what does this do?
2, Which operator is the imate rom for, and where could i find it?
..no problem...
1. Use file explorer to navigate to the root directory of your exec. There u will see the pim.vol file which u can literally copy to an sd card or if your connected to activsync then u can copy this file to your pc by clicking on the explore button on the activsync window itself. This file contains all your contact/calendar information as far as I know. Always worth backing it up unless u synchronise with MS Outlook.
2. The latest imate rom is officially for the imate jasjar which is unlocked to all networks therefore there is NO specific operator that this rom is designed for. I've been using this since it came out with my Orange configurations for MMS and GPRS etc.
The rom is on the ftp site in this directory
ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/Universal/Shipped_Complete_Updates/
it should be called JASJAR_WWE_13076_164_10900_wwe_ship.exe
I would recommend u first look around the Universal forums and read what people are saying before u jump into it. Its always good to know what to expect when doing something like this.

What "ady" meant was:
1st: Install Buzz's Ext ROM Unlocker and unlock your Ext ROM.
2nd: Cut and paste them to your SD Card and save a copy on your computer for backup.
3rd: Perform a hard reset. Since you already took off the Ext ROM, you now have a pure Microsoft OS running on your device.
To answer your question, the Ext ROM is what you see being installed when you perform a hard reset. It is indicated by a progress bar during installation after a hard reset. The Ext ROM contains the customizations provided by the "Brand" name of your device.
The simpliest way to avoid the installation of the Ext ROM, if you don't want to unlock it is:
1st: Perform a hard reset.
2nd: "IMMEDIATELY" perform a soft reset by pressing the reset pin as soon as you see the "Microsoft Today Screen". By doing this, the installation of the Ext ROM is by-passed.
If you are going to ask me where to find the Unlocker. Just do a search. Hope this cleared it up.
Thanks for the excellent reply. Can you tell me what exactly would be excluded by not installing the Extended ROM contents? I am guessing this would be like selecting a corporate install on the O2 XDA EXEC?? Thanks again for any reply.

Any customisations your operator has made. It's hard to say what exactly as that changes per ExtROM (and each new version of Windows Mobile by each operator has a new ExtROM so...)
If you don't install the ExtRom you have plain Windows Mobile, if you install the Extended ROM (which it will be default) it adds patches, customisations (backgrounds, sounds, GPRS settings etc), button configurations, home page settings, add icons, remove icons, custom programs etc.
My advise is to read the wiki (link in top left) open up your ExtendedROM as the poster above advised and then customise it how you want, or just by pass it completely each time and add in what you want manually.

xanth is absolutely right. The Ext ROM changes with each "Brand". I am attacching a link for the O2 Ext ROM explanation: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=32527
Some applications in the Ext ROM, you can deduce what it is made for like "default_Backgamon etc...(which installs the game backgamon in Imate Ext ROM) and some are similar to O2's, so let it be your guide.
why
you don't want a "clean version" it would not contain any drivers, camera software or bluetooth software that make life easy. your jasjar is not clean by bypassing the ext-rom. to prove this look at your programs the zip program and voicedial do not come with a clean wm5 image.

Actually ALL WORKS FINE with a clean install, as mentioned above, the only thing you might have to add is the settings for MMS, and video call capabilities. But ALL SOFTWARES INSTALLED WORKS. From BT to WiFi, camera app, voice dial, etc... I know because I already tried it.

Well that depends on the base Windows Mobile ROM. Some will have some features, while some won't (won't fit possibly?) and would require the ExtROM to install them.
I appreciate this is a Universal thread, but one example is the BlueAngel. The SX66 doesn't come with a camera so it's ROM doesn't contain camera software and if you used that on a regular BlueAngel (XDA IIs for example) you'd need to install the camera software seperately.
Hope this actually makes sense.
what about a real clean ROM...
i mean a ROM that does not contain any of those "dog barking" junks media files and themes (there is around 8MB of these), as well as unnecessary EXTROM files. YET sparing drivers for camera, bluetooth , and other crucial drivers.
thanx
go it
then you are correct to hard reset then soft reset before your device wants to load the ext-rom
unnecessary media files are not in the ext rom
they come with the winows folder and the my doc. they r more than 8mb , and they serving for NOTHING... so stopping the erom wont save you from them
I'm trying to update my tp2 to wm 6.5, but i have this program that i paid for but i deleted the cab. Is there any way i can keep the or reinstall the program?? Its installed on my phone.
1) Use a program called "SPB Backup" to backup whatever you want to save off your current build, including this program or any others...SPB will let you reapply whatever you saved to a new ROM, even if it's an upgrade (different).
2) What program is it? Often the cab can be easy to find, you just need the serial number or other code that they give you when you purchase it to unlock the full functionality. Or, some publishers will allow you to download it again if you request it (and meet whatever proof of purchase requirements they ask for, like e-mail address and other info)
