WM6 SMTP Port (non-standard port) Issue - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

Okay.. I have read and read and my eyes are bleeding!
In WM5, I could specify the smtp port in Pocket Outlook by adding the port number to the end of the smtp server (i.e. smtp.blahblah.com:27)
For some reason when I set this in WM6 (Black 1.2) it still tries to connect to port 25. I have verified this behavior as I admin the mailserver I am trying to connect to.
So.. Am I missing something or is this broken in WM6?
Regards

try using cwmx.com as your smtp server. you are on cingular right?

Actually, I know I can use Cingular's smtp server but I would rather use my own as it's more secure and I can debug any delivery errors.

I had a similar problem and it was not WM6 but rather the ISP connection. Using a non standard SMTP port (gmail) through WIFI works fine specifying the addressort in the account config. The same with T-mobile service gets blocked.
In my case it is not a WM6 issue.

Well.. It worked last week in WM5 flawlessly. And when I set the port to 27 I see the phone connect on the SMTP server to port 25 as if it just disregards the port number and connects to 25 no matter what.

Really strange. Perhaps is the ROM release? I am using VSWM from 03/20. I just tested again and my authenticated SMTP to smtp.gmail.com on port 587 are going out without problems.
Let us know if you find the problem.

Just tested using WiFi and it tried port 25 even tho 27 is specified. Naturally my ISP blocks 25 so it borks out. Something is amiss here... maybe a registry setting? Maybe someone can check HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Svc\ and see if there is a SMTP setting. Or maybe the mailtrans.dll has 25 hard-coded in the ROM I am using?
*shrug*

No SMTP key in mine. In fact, I did search the registry for the gmail smtp information and could not find it. It seems to be stored somewhere else.

Ugh!
So... I deleted and recreated the email account...
And it WORKS now!!! I say WTF ever
Thanks for all the input peeps... much appreciated.

Change to SMTP Port number REQUIRES a new account in WM6
I scoured the next beforehand and discovered that you can't simply tack on a ":XXX" port number to your SMTP server. it actually requires that you delete the account and re-create it with the port number string.
I figured this out once before, but then of course, forgot it and when setting up my email on my new Dutty 6.1 rom (r0xors!), learned the hard way again.
Hope this helps,

Cool. Glad to have helped out.

there's no need to erase the account, just go to the email settings on pocket outlook and ad ":xx" the outgoing server. example "mysmtp.com:27"
worked fot me in my htc touch.

Can anybody help to define, How push email is setup? and how it can work on imate jasjar

Exchange SP2 setup
Does anyone have any info on what is required from Exchange to set this push mail up. i.e. HTTPS access from web, etc
Also i am on vodafone so what would my device address be? i.e. sms://<number> etc? do you need this? :?
Thanks.

Hi deluxe,
Can you tell us what version of Exchange you are pointing to and are you trying to configure the sync from the device or via the ActiveSync desktop wizard?
I assume you have a AKU2 ROM installed on your device.
Setting up push email is very easy to do provided you have a box running OWA with SP2 applied (ideally SP2 on all boxes but you can get away with it just on OWA and the server with your mailbox). The default settings on the Exchange end should be enough to get you going.
You mention you’re being prompted for the device address, which implies that Exchange is falling back to using “Always Up To Date” (i.e. sending an SMS to your device each time you get a new mail). This is almost definitely not what you want to use. Are you sure you have SP2 installed?
Anyway, I am rambling so here is a simple check list.
Exchange SP2 on the OWA/Mailbox servers.
AKU2 Windows Mobile 5 Rom on the device.
ActiveSync 4.1 on the PC if you use the PC wizard.
Synchronisation with Exchange working ‘before’ trying to configure Direct Push from the scheduling options.
Access to your OWA (or ISA etc.) server via whatever means you want to run Direct Push over (i.e. WiFi, GPRS Internet APN, Private APN etc.)
Do we have any idea on the impact on the Data bill regarding the Push ? (Of course it will depend on HOW MUCH spam you receive ) but just having the PUSH always on, will this effect our data bill ?
Cheers
I am running exchange 2003 sp2, but currently do not have access outside the company .i.e. i have not nated it out. i have the website running internally so i presume i just need to nat the server to a public address.
I was trying to use activesync to set this up, and i am running the new rom.

In our simple tests your looking at about 10-12MB + mail volume on a stock config. You can make that a fair bit less by tweaking the heartbeat to a more reasonable 20-40 mins (knocks a few MB off, about 8MB + mail volume @ 40 min heartbeat).

As I assume you don't have a private APN then without making the server public (via a firewall, ISA server or as a last result simple NAT) is the only way your going to make this work.
If you use SSL make sure the cert matches the public (internet) address of your server and that you have an approperate root cert installed on your device if you use an internal CA. You can use it over HTTP just fine but it's not secure in the least and I would not suggest it unless you had a private APN.
When you have the server exposed just get manual syncing over the air going from the device, then we can tackle DirectPush.

From the speed of receive the e-mail in the TS2 demo's I've seen, would you agree that Exchange is pushing the email before the filters can scrub it? I think this would be an area of huge improvement if MS would conduct the push later down in the process of receiving/delivering the e-mail.

jmcl: REAL MAIL is a service provided by vodafone supporting imap or pop3 mail, in the case you haven't a corporate exchange server or lotus. If you have some corporative mail server, with an exchange server, vodafone doesn't add value. In this case should be nice to have a mail address where you can receive sms, in other words, imagine a mail address that is connected directly to your sms inbox. There are other applications -for example verichat- that use this sms/mail address in order to send your device messages when you are not online.
does anyone have the setting for o2 in the uk?

its not push mail unless its "As Items arrive", its just normal activesync checking,
also need the direct push enabled for it.
it does rock tho i have mine set to "As Items arrive" for peak and manual for offpeak, as im on the machine i use the account on in the evenings, so its basically now set for push mail in my working hours and manual when im at home,

I believe this is due to the heartbeat, mine seems to do the same thing....
thanks Carnivor,
but Im still confused, Direct push is enabled on my device (its yellow) and "as item arrives" is checked also, yet it keeps on syncying every 10 or 15 minutes!!
I thought it will only sync whenever I really have mail, if it keeps syncing every 10 minutes I will probably not use it because of the extreme high cost of GPRS
Sorry for the novice question but what is heartbeat!!

a heartbeat is something the exchange server sends to your phone to make sure its still connected and everything is ok, what you are seeing is not a sync its just letting you know when the last heartbeat saw recieved. I think if anyone knows different please let me know
ahh i see what you mean now, im sure i saw on the 4smartphone site that its 5mb/month data tarriff required, one could assume this is 24/7 heartbeat monitoring without the actual cost of transfering emails, that will be added ontop of the initial 5mb. its a theory

Apologies if I am wrong on this one but don't you just add it to the end of the mail server address in options?
ie. if mail server is : mail.server.com and you want to use port 2525, then you put in:
mail.server.com:2525
I cant get this to work - anyone know if it would be possible to create a cooked rom with a given port hardcoded into the pocket outlook app?
Dave.
port 2525 sounds like a socketmail email service
nah, 2525 is a common mail services alternate port to get around the ISP's blocking of port 25.
My mail service will also use port 587.
Anyway adding :2525 after the mail.server.com works fine here.
serverort does work
I am using servernameortnum currently in WM6 on my hermes, so it does work.
I am using port 465, the secure SMTP port. that, or 587 (the mail submission agent port) is likely unblocked by ISPs, but you would have to make sure that the server is listening there, and you will almost certainly need to authenticate to the smtp server. Many servers will only allow authentication over a secure link, so you might need SSL enabled too.
I had trouble however with SSL and SMTP AUTH in pocket outlook. If anyone else does, this might be useful: http://lists.exim.org/lurker/message/20040609.135310.ba09a6e4.html
Based on that link I ended up needing to make sure my mail server started conversations on port 465 in SSL/TLS mode (rather than waiting for a STARTTLS). For anyone using Exim, that means setting "tls_on_connect_ports = 465" in your config. For people using a commercial mail server, you might just have to try lots of ports and setting permutations.
So the short version is that serverort does work, but there are other concerns as well.
note that is "colon" "p". or a dumb looking little face.

MS Push OTA Error

I have been trying to get my 8525 to do OTA Push Mail from our corporate Exchange 2003 SP2 server here where I work. I am the admin so I have access to the Exchange server and all settings are correct on the server itself to deal with OMA.
I can use the web browser of my 8525 and actually browse to our server and view both OWA and OMA directly, but when I configure the server through Activesync it always comes back with error code 80072ee7 (server name not resolved) error.
I am running vp3g's official v3 AT&T rom, and radio 1.48 if that matters. But here's where I think my problem lies and maybe someone with more experience regarding this can correct me if I'm wrong. We are running our OWA site on a high port number above 50000. We also have the OWA site under a subdirectory of the server. When I configure the server in Activesync, I enter the servername, port number and path to the OWA site, but once AS fails and I look at the server setting I find that it has dumped any path information and only keeps the server name and port number info.
So am I correct in assuming that M$ direct push only works with a server where the OWA site exists off the root directory of the IIS server? Or can it support paths into the site?
Actually push email relies on the Microsoft-Server-Activesync web application, and has little to do with OWA/OMA. I seem to recall that specifying port numbers and/or directory paths won't work though... May I ask why you're running the Exchange web services in such an unusual manner? Are you hosting other sites in that same IIS server as well?

Actually that's the way it was set up before I started with the company. We have outside sales people that use the site and they felt it would be slightly more secure if it wasn't sitting on port 80 like most web sites. The boss won't let me change the port number at this time.
So activesync on the 8525 won't allow a port number? I thought it would because it keeps that in the server config info it'll dump any path info, but I figured out the path was not needed after a little tweaking. I just can't do anything about the port at this time.
I'm with kltye... don't think push has much (if anything) to do with OWA/OMA. It runs over port 443 (https). I believe it actually starts on port 80 (http) then switches to 443, but I'll spare you the ugly details on that one. Only need to know that for firewall config purposes.
Drop the port # and path and see how that goes.

Security through obscurity eh?
I'm with vp3g as well: doesn't the https site run over 443? If it doesn't, maybe you can create a new Website and use the same settings as the original Exchange-Activesync web app, but have it listen on 443 for https. Are you able (i.e. "have permission") to open up port 443 on your corporate firewall?
Just did a quick perusal of my Exchange Server... appears as though push is an extension of OMA. If you don't have a Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync virtual directory off the Default Web Site (or some site listening on ports 80 & 443), you may be hosed.
Possibly related, but do you have a trusted SSL cert installed on the server? Without that, you might have a problem connecting.

Yeah that's what I figured. I have the ActiveSync virtual directory within the Default Website along with OMA, but the server is listening on ports 60000 & 443 rather than the typical port 80.
You would think there would be a registry hack for AS on the mobile device whereby you could specify a non-standard port for syncing.
TaurusBullba, to answer your question. We don't have a cert (yet) for the Exchange server. That however doesn't matter for normal http connections, only if I attempt to use port 443 as the connect point for AS. Before the year is out, we'll more than likely acquire a cert for that server as well as our http server, but at the moment. I got nothing.

60000 is probably the killer as I noted earlier that push starts on 80 and jumps to 443.

I think it was built around 80/443 to avoid client-side firewall issues.

You can do a "self-signed" certificate (i.e., generated by Windows Server) at zero cost. Downside is that it must be exported, copied to the device and installed.

Thanks for the help everyone. We will be building a new Exchange server later this year and I'll push to throw the site back on 80 at that time. In the meantime, I'll try the self-signed cert and see if that gets me in. Thanks everyone for your help! This site is a great resource for WinMo newbies like myself. BTW vp3g... lovin your AT&T v3 ROM. Solid and no problems overall!
BTW, I don't think ActiveSync starts off with port 80 - I was running a personal Exchange server off my cable connection whose incoming port 80 is blocked and everything worked fine using only 443. Good luck with the setup!

WM6 Exchange EMail help

I am currently using WM6 and am trying to get EMail through our Exchange server setup; however, my Dash s620 will not properly save the server's address.
The address for our OWA is (ex) mail.email.com:8888/exchange
and this address works fine in Internet Explorer etc, but when I enter this into the phone it removes the /exchange and only saves up to :8888, which then gives me "Error synchronizing" when trying to connect. Our Exchange server does have Exchange ActiveSync enabled along with Direct Push enabled.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
I think that you have to check your ActiveSync settings on Exchange. I know that Microsoft have a lot of KB's about that.
It does the same thing on mine, erases exchange, but mine is cool. Are you sure you are putting in the Domain?

Yeah I've tried every which way I could think of for the login credentials.
I'll sift through some more MS articles tomorrow afternoon, see if I can't find anything... baffled though, really.
K this is going to be a huge PITA I can tell.
I adjusted the Virtual Directory for the default web site in Exchange System manager to point directly to /exchange, eliminating the need for anything after the :8888. It works fine in IE etc, quickly brings up a login prompt. Using the phone's IE and going to the http://mail.email.com:8888 works fine, prompts a login accordingly...
I configured a coworkers Blackberry to use our OWA and it works fine, but I'm not sure if it uses Push Email (Exchange ActiveSync).
What is it about the Dash that won't mesh? The server is not using SSL so I couldn't see it being a certificate issue (maybe it still is?). Is there anyone around who manages an Exchange Server and could perhaps shed some light on common settings that need to be adjusted for Exchange ActiveSync?
Such a nuisance
ActiveSync on the phone reports "The server could not be reached. Please verify the server name." Support code: 0x80072EE7
It reports back with this no matter how I enter the address (which again, works fine in IE). Devil phone
8888 is definetly not standard for publishing ActiveSync.
the software will connect to either MailServer:80 if the SSL checkbox is cleared or MailServer:443 if the checkbox is checked.
don't think you'll get ActiveSync connect to something else.
Why don't you change your port back to 80?
you are already exposing your server to internet without any form of protection (no SSL so your password can be sniffed over the network) and having port 8888 buys you nothing in terms of security since any port scanner will report the port as opened and eventually get the HTTP banner from the IIS Server.
So, get back to a standard config and you'll love your DASH again.

[Q] Exchange ActiveSync Froyo 2.2 - FAIL

I have tried 3 different 2.2 ROM's and all of them fail to connect to my exchange server which is a must have for me. I have tried built in Exchange ActiveeSync, AOSP mail.apk, calkulin's mail 2.2 apk and nothing works.
Does anyone know of a work around or what the hell I can do to get it working. I have asked this question a couple times in Rom threads and nobody apparently uses exchange activesync other than me.
Side Note:
Exchange 2007 R2
Not using self signed SSL Cert
Also, I know what section this is but when I posted in Q&A nobody responded and seeing how there are more knowledgeable people here I am hoping to get a resolution.
So thank you in advance for any and all insight given to me!
There might be something in your setting for exchange. I am able to connect to my companies exchange server with all the mail apps, I have it working with the Leaked OTA HTC 2.2 with there built in Active Sync. I also have tested with CM 6's nightly and it also syncs.
Now it's funny that in our system we have to setup the login as domain\user_name instead of how the email address is. in our case it's [email protected].
Also we had to use owa.ourdomain.com for the ssl server.
Hope you get it going. As it works great for me.
Mine works also. I am running the Froyo OTA leak. I am on Exchange through Active Sync.
Maybe a re-flash? or check your settings. I use the same settings as I would for the getting into my mail on the web.
My exchange works fine under Avalaunchmod's 2.2 and under FreshEvo 3.0. Like said above, try the domain\username. That's how mine works.
I would check with your IT department.
I have tried just about every recent 2.2 (read: since the "leak") rom and have not had an issue connecting to my exchange on any of them.

I got it working but thank you so much for all of your suggestions guys!
I got on the exchange server and verified which certificate was default and it was our secondary domain.
Changed server address to: mail.secondomain.com
Domain: left blank
User: domain\name

I may very well be wrong but it may have something to do with BakedSnack because I am having the same issue as you. My Exchange worked fine pre-root and seems to work fine on Fresh but on BakedSnack (9.7 or 1), nada.
It's been driving me nuts because I love the BakedSnack ROM. Interestingly, when I first set up my Exchange on BakedSnack 1 yesterday it worked for the very first sync but I ended up with "unable to connect to server errors thereafter." Over the course of the past few weeks I've flashed and reflashed Baked several times and could get the Exchange account set up but no email.
If you discover a fix, please let me know.
Also, the Exchange Server at my office is 2003. Maybe it has something to do with that.
I have the same problem, so far unsolved
