Question for T-mobile users - HTC Excalibur

Hello,
I just got a dash from my cousin and am just wondering what internet plan I should add to my existed voice plan. Mainly, I would like to know the differences between tmobileweb ($5.99), blackberry ($19.99), and tmobile total internet ($29.99). I've heard they are pretty much the same but just different marketing. Can anyone confirm this?
Thanks a lot!

5.99 plan is t-zones and you can see some sites, and most fo them you can't interact with. The total one lets you go anywhere online and interact as much as a SmartPhone can. And the BlackBerry one I thought was only for blackberries, but I've been with t-mobile for only 1.5 months, so I might be wrong.

Alright, after searching more, I found this website detailed and explained the tmobileweb (or used to be called t-zone).
Link: http://www.gruups.com/tzones/
"The technical difference between T-Mobile Internet and T-MobileWeb with their Web access is that T-MobileWeb actually DOESN'T have port 80 & 443 (for HTTPS) open. Everything goes through the T-MobileWeb proxy which is a Nokia HTTP-To-WAP box which has to process everything before it's delivered to your phone which means surfing with T-MobileWeb is slower than the more expensive T-mobile Internet plan (but at a fourth of the price!)
This also means that things like the "Opera Browsers" and basic or old freeware might not be able to surf from your phone EVEN if it's only accessing a website through port 80. All these applications need to understand the "WAP PROXY" (on pda's and smartphones) or HTTP PROXIES (on sophistacted PDAs and notebooks)"

So I guess T-mobileweb isn't an option for me since I will not be able to use skype and it's slower than the Tmobile total internet service. Now I need to find out the differences between blackberry plan and total internet plan.

I am pretty sure the blackberry plan is for blackberry devices only.

I used the BlackBerry Connect on my Dash. I had a Pearl and popped in the SIM card, installed the BlackBerry Connect software for MS smartphone and it worked fine.
I used the T-Zone plan, I have no problems with sites. I refuse to pay $30 for EDGE, too slow.

So was there any difference between t-zone plan and balcberry plan for u? What blackberry connect software did you install on your dash to get it to work?
Thanks

the virtual blackberry for windows mobile 6. does it erase everything on your phone like the windows os and contacts and stuff? or is it just an application that you can run? or does it integrate blackberry features within the windows apps?
more details on this program?
It looks like it is an application
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2121074,00.asp
"Research in Motion will release an "application suite" this fall that will let some Windows Mobile 6 devices run all BlackBerry applications, executives said Monday. "
Also do you have a link to download it or no?
It also states that "The software will appear as an icon on the screen of a smartphone and will have the same interface as a BlackBerry. Users will be able to toggle between the Windows Mobile and BlackBerry interfaces, the company said."
The suite would sit next to, but not overwrite the existing Windows Mobile personal information management applications – so yes, that means you'll have two address books on your device which wouldn't talk to each other. If you have the BlackBerry suite running in the background, the BlackBerry phone and contacts applications will activate when you get a call.
Man, that's very old news: 04.23.07.
Did it come to happen or is it just the BB connect?
Cheers.
Yes, but is it out yet or no? Cause that would be nice once it comes out to have...
virtual blackberry is bbconnect?
is bbconnect the virtual blackberry you're talking about? if it is then i've downloaded it but hit a couple of snags... first of all tmobile won't let me switch to a blackberry internet plan...saying that my dash which is a wm device is not compatible with it... tried twice with two different reps...(because u need a blackberry plan to run this service)...and one question...even if i did manage to convince tmobile to let me have the bb plan, is it faster than edge?

Even Total Internet plan cannot let BB traffic go through?
nope....you would need bb internet plan to be able to connect to the blackberry service apparently...
Just go to tmobile.com and switch your phone to a blackberry on the top right corner, then call tmobile and add the service. This will make them think you have a blackberry. Trust me I work for tmobile so do this and then give a call to them.

But is it faster than EDGE? And won't they see that I already have the tmobile internet plan? Has anybody done this before and how did it work out for them?
No its not much faster the edge, its about the same speeds. Oh and you would need to switch your plan like cancel the internet plan and add the other plan for blackberry, but it will not be faster. In order to make the internet faster I would recommend using opera mini which runs in java and it loads pages much faster then internet explorer. Give it a shot and let me know what you think.

Teathering on T-Mo TP2?

I am contemplating dumping my HTC Fuze and jumping ship from AT&T to T-Mobile just to get a Touch Pro 2, however I just got off the phone with T-Mo customer service and they informed me that you cannot tether the Touch Pro 2 to a laptop or use it as a modem.
Now I am sure the harware supports tethering and this is just something T-Mobile has decided to cripple, but how easy would it be to enable teathering? I hate the idea of paying $350 plus locking into a new contract and losing functionality from my Fuze!
Baloney.
Internet sharing is on the phone and the HTC WiFiRouter works perfectly.
I have tested both.
Thank you for the fast response, and for clearing this up! Once again, knowledge gained from this site continues to impress me!!!
I think what the T-Mobile people were actually getting at is your not supposed to do it.
I think its in the T&C's that if you have a data plan you wont use it through a computer and to watch video etc
(I use it all the time though and they dont enforce it)
You can tether (legitimately) on Total Internet (their old $20 plan) or the new "PDA" plans ($25 and $35, but include messaging.)
You CANNOT (according to the rules) do so on their "phone" plans (Web2Go I think now) but in some cases it will work. They're enforcing this with the TP2 by doing the "automatic add the feature" game based on IMEI, as they have with other smartphones they are selling now (especially the Android ones that won't work at all without it.)
Note that the TP2 has a number of included features (including embedded account management!) that doesn't work right, especially from the browser, if you use the Internet2 or Internet3 APN. You have to use "epc" if you want those to work.
I'm not sure why they'd care about video and such on the TP2 in particular, seeing as it has a Youtube video viewer BUILT IN FROM THE FACTORY in T-Mobile's software load!

Where are you finding this "HTC WiFiRouter"?? (I'm on the T-Mobile version just like you guys)
I don't see it anywhere. I feel like such a newb, lol, even though I'm an ex-cook from my old Wing. So the WiFiRouter thing is pre-installed, right? And it'd let me create a WiFi hotspot for others to connect and use my data? That's what it sounds like.
Am I way off here? Or where the heck is this program? (Welcome everyone)

T-mobile policy on tethering
Per policy it states that this type of 3g HSPCA device isnt allowed to tether and be used as a modem but the phone says otherwise. Also my theory on the last minute price jump on the tp2 is because tmobile can't stop it from being used as a modem on there smart phone data plans like they have with non rooted android devices. As an employee I researched this heavily before buying the TP2 and its one of the reasons why I went for the device. T-Mobile is so proud of their new 3g network but have made a lot of decisions to try and limit bandwidth consumption like removing push internet from the device. But anyway it should work. My disclaimer is that policy changes constantly at T-Mobile so this may not always be so.

Tethering works. I have a Touch Pro 2 with the stock T-Mobile USA ROM. Despite what the T-Mobile representative says, the stock ROM contains the correct application to do this. Programs --> Internet Sharing.
Plug the Touch Pro 2 into your computer via USB and then hit "Connect". Bam, instant Internet tethering. Works well if you're in a bind.
T-Mobile does states exactly this:
"1. Permissible and Prohibited Uses
Your Data Plan is intended for Web browsing, messaging, and similar activities on your device and not on any other equipment. Unless explicitly permitted by your Data Plan, other uses, including for example, tethering your device to a personal computer or other hardware, are not permitted."
When I logged in to get details of my Data Plan, here is what I found:
"T-Mobile Total Internet
T-Mobile Total Internet includes unlimited Internet access on your phone, along with unlimited Internet access in T-Mobile HotSpot locations. Access your e-mail or browse the Web on your phone, or log on to wireless broadband access from a T-Mobile HotSpot in one of thousands of locations around the world using your Wi-Fi-enabled device."
I'm not inclined to poke this fire with T-Mobile as I have been a customer for a long time and have been nothing but happy with their customer service; and even before a put a cooked ROM on my last phone (wing) it had an internet connection sharing by default (bluetooth or USB only).

Go ahead and tether all you want. If they do ask you, say you were downloading lots of music or something FROM YOUR PHONE. They can't prove anything.
PS, that's the $5.99 T-Zones, LOL. 2.99 would be incredible!

This is one blind statement if I ever heard one!
Tmobile IS your ISP. Tmobile KNOWS where you go and what you do.
Now, whether they will actually take the time to look through their logs and find out who's been going where, that's a different story.
But don't say they can't prove anything, because they can, and if they want to they will terminate your contract, and charge you the ETF on top.
FYI, I've been with Tmobile since they were VoiceStream. In fact I opened the account in Feb of 2001. Not to mention, at some point during my career I've actually managed the entire wireless account pool for a 150 people office, and most of them were on Tmobile. That should tell you something about my level of knowledge, as well as loyalty.

Start - Programs - Internet sharing.
LOL
The last post was too funny. Seriously though, T-Mobile has little in the way of "monitoring" what data is being sent to your phone. Its more of the amount thats an issue. T-Mobiles logic is that tethering will burn up bandwidth quicker which makes it more likely to hit the data cap and considering whats going on with ATT and the IPHONE bandwidth issue it makes sense. BUT if you monitor your bandwidth consumption and keep it under 10gb, I would say safer would be under 5gb a month then your not rocking the boat. And even when it hits the cap is throttles down to edge speeds anyway so I cant see an issue in this. Now if you live on tethering 24/7 then ya your gonna be pushing it. Customer care can see your data consumption in the system so just call um up and say hey I am worried I might be going over my data limit, lol they will be like blah i know how important blah blah it is to not go over. Then when they shut up they will say you used only 3gb this month so far so your doing fine blah blah blah. If T-Mobile had something in place to detect you tethering they wouldnt have made google remove the tether app from the market. Open source i guess means its open until you do something we think isnt right? I think its still bunk because what happens when someone hits the cap on there 3g phone. nada. And you would be surprised how under used T-Mobiles 3g network really is depending on the city. Theres some rumor that this was planned since the iphone may be going to other carriers soon. I will leave it at that.

BlackBerry Services on Rhodium (Not BBConnect)

I don't know if this which I am about to ask is even possible, but here it goes:
I recently got an unlimited BlackBerry data plan from my provider, plus a Bold 9700. The data plan has nothing to do with BlackBerry corporate services, the only thing that offers me is that I can surf the web and receive my emails where ever I am, without a WiFi connection.
So I was wondering if it was possible to transfer these functionalities to my Touch Pro2 which I do prefer than the Bold 9700.
In other words, ditch the Bold 9700 and use my SIM card along with the BlackBerry functionality in the Touch Pro2.
And it would be nice (in the case there is a way to do this) to confirm that the browsing and the emails are happening using my BB data plan - not the 3G functionality, because in that case I will receive a fat charge from my provider at the end of the month
Also note that I was able to complete successfully the instructions found in
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4150074&postcount=35
and I installed BlackBerry connect on my device. But browsing and emails were not working, so I assume this whole BlackBerry Connect software is indented for the people that use a BlackBerry corporate server.
Thanks in advance for your responses.

[SOLVED] So...Can you USB tether? [solution # 25 no root required]

Seems to be mixed reviews that some can and some cannot. So what's the deal?
no....the end
Mine will let me but my web browser takes me to a page asking me to sign up for the Tethering service at $14.95/month.
Suppose the answer to the question is technically *yes*
I paid the upgrade for tethering, though I think it is a bit of bait and switch (their literature certainly wasn't clear, and my plan allowed it on my Vibrant with no complaint). But it is too important a function for me not to have. If I were a new customer, I would opt for it as well (unless some other carrier didn't charge extra). Frankly, I don't see why they can't just charge by the gigabyte (why should they care if you are streaming videos to your cell phone or to your PC?), but it seems this is the current convention.

If the carriers can charge you for something they will. It's as if 1GB on PC > 1GB on Phone. I assume that once we get root on these phones we'll be able to tether for free the same way I was able to on my Vibrant.

That should be the case. It's hard to go from 2 years (roughly of course) of using all sorts of awesome roms on the HD2 to this locked up guy. Here's to the future though, cheers.
Yes, I can.
I can. No app needed. Built right in the stock rom
I see another difference from previous tethering on the Vibrant: from the T-Mobile support page:
"When your phone is serving as a Wi-Fi hotspot for otherdevices, you cannot access the Internet on the phone itself."
It seems that it isn't completely true: I can listen to Internet radio, use Firefox, at least some of the time. The Android Market seems to fail consistently, however (just hangs "loading...").
Does anyone understand why this change has been made, or what is it's purpose?
i still don't quite can figure out why some people are able to teather as is without root
yet, some other are unable to teather
it's something in the phone plan that you guys have?, or simply the SIM card? or maybe it's on the account side in Tmobile?
I put the new SIM in my nexus and tethered fine when I couldn't from this phone.

I suppose that in order to ask us to sign onto tethering, the data must be going through the phone already, so they must have some filter in place that detects that fact and blocks further data, pending your decision.
Theres definitely something with the sim card. Used the sim from my mt4g and tethering would start and the automatically turn off a few seconds later. Activated the new sim and now it stays on but directs me to the site to purchse the service. Bummer.
We need to root this thing quickly.
Wonder if that's one of the reasons why tmo wants us to use the sim included.

Holy crap. I pay less than that for unlimited data. That's more than half of what a full data plan costs on T-Mobile. I take it not may people buy it. I'm guessing some of the custom ROMs will port over native tethering from the international SGS2. I wonder if T-Mobile flags tethering for people not on a legit tethering plan?
I tried to tether my Touchpad but got the T-Mobile page saying to add tethering. Gotta wait for root to get free tethering and utilize those fast data speeds!
i was doing some reserach on this and figured out how t-mobile does it. if you noticed when you turn on tethering a popup generates and after you enable it the 4g disappears for a bit, apparently in the software the phone disconnect your current apn, epc.tmobile.com and changes to another apn built into the phone software which checks for the 14.99 feature so yea sucks hopefully once root is established we can get around this. if you want to test this turn on wifi tether and then go to your apn and try to select the epc.tmobile apn bubble it will go on and then disconnect immediately
Has anyone tried any other APN's?

Here in the USA, T-Mobile charges $9.95/m for tethering. I chatted with T-Mobile asking them how come I cannot tether (brought to their promo page) and I was told that T-Mobile will be enforcing the T&Cs regarding tethering... that is, it's not allowed unless you pay for it.
I told them that my Vibrant and G2x tethered just fine to what he responded that this will change in the near future. He said that with the introduction of the SGS2 they will start to clamp down on tethering without a tethering plan.
Mind you, this is one T-Mo CSR and I don't know if it will really be policy. However, it's pretty clear that this is the case at least for the SGS2.

No extra charge for tethering with the Nokia Lumia 900???

Looking at the Nokia Lumia 900's at the At&t stores, I looked to see if they had internet sharing on them, they do. I asked the reps more then once at different stores about it and was told it comes with it activated. I did not ask if it cost more, but they didn't tell me there was an extra charge. Has at&t's tethering policies changed? Is there a chance At&t's tethering policies loosened up for the Nokia debut or should I expect an email or text to upgrade to tethering plan after first use? I currently have $30 Unlimited plan.
Any Nokia or At&t insiders out there? Please chime in.

$50/month for 5GB of shared data for phone or tethering use.... Company IRU discounts apply if applicable on your account.
I'm curious about this.. I have the Titan unlocked and I use it here in Toronto on Telus. When I turn it Internet Sharing it still tells me to contact AT&T to use the feature which makes no sense not being on AT&T.
So I'm wondering if this will be an issue with the 900...

just don't expect much. The message about at&t is simply a hard coded message on the phone. Microsoft won't help violate any security of any sort...so don't expect that. To use tethering or sharing on the at&t network requires the 5gig plan. Microsoft won't bypass that for you.
Well either way.. I already know MS and ATT won't do anything for me since I'm not in the US on a US carrier. We don't have MS stores in Toronto either...
So do we know if it will alert AT&T if used? I know they can find out other ways but I used it several times with my Focus without any notices from them. I'm wondering if I can do the same now with my 900?
The rep(s) told you wrong. The "Internet Sharing" rocker is there, but it tells you to contact ATT and exits. I found out the hard way that even tho tethering worked on Samsung Focus, there is no way, out of the box, to enable tethering on the 900. The only way to get it from ATT would be to give up my grandfathered unlimited data plan and opt for the 5GB plan. Hopefully there will be a work around soon.
Yeah I just tried it and you are correct. No way in hell I'm paying for the 5 GB plan considering the most data I've every used was 1 GB in a month.
I tether maybe once or twice a month for a total of about 10 minutes. I'll get a sim adapter and use my Focus when I need to tether until there's a hack to enable it.

Could someone in Canada that has access to the Lumia 900 confirm if Rogers is locking the internet sharing down as well?
There's no "tethering" plan specifically, it's more that tethering is disabled in the 3GB plan and will only work in the 5GB one.
As a side note, employer discounts will not work on the 3GB plan, only 5GB. For me it worked out because the 5GB plan costed only a few bucks more than the 3GB one so if you work for a big company be sure to check.

I'm on a Rogers student plan with the Lumia 900. (~500MB I think...) While I haven't connected anything to Internet Sharing yet, I was able to enable it and mess with the settings.
Hi,
I have a 6GB data plan on Rogers and I confirm that you can tether without any extra charge as long as you have a 1GB plan and over. I was able to tether without any issue with my Samsung Focus.
Yesterday, I got the Lumia 900, and as of right now, I'm trying to use tethering and it doesn't work. My laptop connects fine, it gets an IP address from the Lumia, but it's unable to browse the internet (unable to resolve any IP). So i'm stuck with a local IP. At least, I'm able to ping the Lumia!
I've tried setting an APN (internet.com/wapuser1/wap and ltemobile.apn) and both doesn't help. I've also tried setting the speed of the connection to 3G instead of 4G in case it might change something.
If anyone has a idea, it would be appreciated!

Nokia Lumia 900 internet sharing
I just got my Nokia 900 today and was sure hoping that I could find a way to get internet sharing to work on At&t without having to pay for their tethering plan. Does anyone know if there is anyone about to get this to work? I have my phone developer unlocked already.

Could someone in Canada that has access to the Lumia 900 confirm if Rogers is locking the internet sharing down as well?
