Mobile 6 and Vario II - some questions - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

I am thinking about taking the plunge on my T-Mobile Vario II. But I have a few questions before I commit to this upgrade.
1. Do any of the versions work (I mean really work) with the Vario II?
2. If so, what version is best for the Vario II? By "best" I mean, is the most stable?
3. What might I lose (functionally) by upgrading? For example, does the video call capability work with any flavour of WM6?
4. Which of my applications will work? I use a number of third party apps including Fizz Traveller, eWallet, ListPro, pRSSReader, and Skype.
5. What extra functionality does WM6 provide (over WM5)?
6. And, finally, will T-Mobile ever release an official upgrade for Vario II users? If not, will this upgrade invalidate my warrenty?
Thanks in anticipation.

I'll answer a few of them!
1. Yes, it does work on your Vario II (I've got one)
2. Currently I use the LVSW Edition, but over the next a newer/faster version of the 'Black Edition' will be out very soon... so maybe hold fire!
3. You won't loose any functionality - just make a note of your Internet Settings and MMS Settings!
4. I don't really use those applications, but I have a question regarding Skype! do you use this on the Web 'n' Walk? if so, which package? I thought they banned the use of VOIP????
5. Speed! its a dream to use!!!
6. Probably not, but who knows... and yes it will probably invalidate your warrenty...

If you would not want to invalidate your warranty, then use mtty to install the OS only.
You will need NBHExtract to extract the OS portion of the file and use mtty as stated previously (search the forum, it's here).
The wiki explains on how to install the OS via mtty (look @ http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_BootloaderMFG and about 3/4 down the page, under Flashing an OS

I am on web&walk as well but you can opt for Skype only to work when there is a WiFi connection available (Starbucks anyone?)

I found mtty 1.11a on the Resco forums - http://www.resco-net.com/downloads/mtty11a.zip - is that the latest (and/or correct/best) version to use when upgrading a WM5 device to WM6?

UK MDA Pro and iMate WWE update

Hi,
I have got confused with the various bricked posts, misnamed WWE update posts etc.
What I would like to know is the following:
1. Does the imate update (english) work on the MDA Pro?
2. Does anyone have the original T-Mobile version for returning it to the release T-mob version?
3. Does doing an upgrade invalidate my warranty with T-Mob?
My issue with current roms is that the device crashes at least once a day, and I am getting fed up with reboots.
Thanks,
Joe
It works fine with the MDA Pro, I have mine running the JASJAR Rom.
ftp://xda:[email protected]/Uploads/MDA_PRO_JASJAR_ROM_UPGRADE_WWE_11353_137_10301.zip
Download that, it has the No Device ID exe.
hi, did the ROM change speed up your MDA pro in any way? also does the video calling feature still work.
This really interests me too.. Any answers out there please?
P :?:
Mine does seem a little quicker, especially after overwriting the iMate supplied .tsk files for the homescreens.
WiFi a *bit* more stable, but not perfect.
So... If I download that file, unpack it onto my UK T-Mobile MDA PRO and run it, I will have the latest software on the MDA PRO?
Are there any 'issues'?
Will I lose any data\ programs\settings etc.?

You run the install from a PC, having put the phone into "bootloader" mode. As far as I know, its a newer ROM version than is supplied with the MDA Pro, and also doesn't contain the T Mobile customisation. It DOES include MSN and Skype as standard, as well as a couple of other bits.
It will totally wipe your phone / settings, but if you select T Mobile UK after you install the new ROM, most of the T Mobile settings are reconfigured for you. You just have to do the 3G one yourself, but the details are in another thread (possibly in the main Universal area of this forum).
Imate produce regular ROM upgrades for their other phones, so it is likely they'll release a new ROM before Orange / O2 / T Mobile manage it.

Just got the MDA pro. How do i upgrade the Rom? I dun really understand how to go to the registry as well? Any help?? Really appreciate it. Thanks.
The link for the update i mate jasjar rom is not working??

Newbie in need of help.
Thanks for the ftp link. Regarding about getting into the registry? How do i do that? And how do i update the rom.
I got some problem with my mda pro sync with my laptop?
It say cant detect the device. I cant install the driver either. Anyone have the same problem with the mda pro or only me?
Do anybody know how can i unlock the mda pro?
Thanks.
Reply really appreciated.
unlocking mda pro
Hi, I think the only way to unlovk the MDA at present is via the subsidy code from T Mobile. In the UK you can only do this after you have completed a month on contract and t mobile will charge you 15 pounds for the priviledge. On 02 the devices come unlocked for any network.
with ref to the ROM update to WWE jasjar, this is an absolute must for ALL t mobile users. I can confirm things are stable all round, but don't expect you can get away from those periodic resets - M$ seem to have built in this feature in all pocket PC OS ! - yes I am calling this a feature of the OS now.
Look around on the forums here on how to flash there are some very good posts about.
Remember, most important if you want stability only install essential software.

Mda pro usb activesync problem
Hi thank for the reply. You mean i should change it to the jasjar rom which is the link above? I am new to pda phones and need some help.
I cant connect my device to my laptop using usb. It say device not detected.
I install the software and it should work rite. Is there something i didnt do? I read the manual saying install the software then have sync relationship with the pc and device. How do i sync the relationship? Do i just plug in the usb to my laptop then it will automatically detect my mda pro?
Help. Thanks.

Upgrade my MDA Pro !

I have a german T-Mobile MDA Pro with the official T-Mobile AKU 2.0 from May 2006. Is there any stable upgrade I could apply to my MDA? Maybe T-Mobile released something officially? I read that there are already Windows Mobile 5 AKU 3.0 and later floating floating around for other brands? Where is the one for MDA Pro?

I am currently using the Helmi’s AKU 3.5. If you are new in ROM upgrades, you may choose the Helmi’s AKU 3.3 which is more reliable.
Bdw. MDA PRO is base on HTC Universal (that is the production name)

Agree.
Me using Helmi_c Aku3.5 v1.3 too. Performance is great except no speedial!
Also think Helmi_c Aku3.3 v1.2 is the best ROM so far except for not having Windows Live.
Works better with Radio 1.14.10, but depend of your network provider.
What is Radio 1.14.10 ?
And what do you mean with Windows Live? Does some Microsoft AKU contain already some windows live services that where promised for "crossbow" (WM6.0)? What are those? Or is this some ugly homwbrew hack?

Helmi_c Aku3.3 v1.2 works better with "Radio ROM" ? Can you explain what a radio ROM is for (as opposed to a normal ROM such as Helmi's ROM" ?

I suggest you go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=286036 and download the Helmi aku3.5 v1.3. -Its very reliable and considerably faster than what you will have installed already. I strongly recommend that you back up to MS OUTLOOK before updating if you dont wish to lose your calander events or contacts.
To answer your question, the so-called 'Radio ROM' is actually an update of the mobile phone (aka radio) firmware. Helmi's package includes a previous radio firmware version which is fine. The package also includes the latest available firmware upgrade (or AKU) of the Windows Mobile 5 operating system. This firmware upgrade of the OS is not yet officially released by MS, but has leaked and has since been tweaked by such jolly fine chaps as Helmi.
By the way, you'll be quite confused by the mixed use of ROM, extended ROM, hard/cold boot, etc (eg. everyone knows that ROM = 'Read Only Memory' and that the AKU and RADIO upgrades are actually written to EEPROM or equivalent memory type). Dont worry too much about it though, the lingua franca grows on you and the support from the community is excellent
Go ahead and try to update your universal after backing it up.
Your next post should be either "WOW, thats much better!!" or "CRAP, how do I get the damned thing to update??!!"
before I actually go for an upgrade I still have some worries:
1. won't I loose the german language on my phone (keyboard, äöü, T9, UI Language) ?
2. on some screenshots I have seen a "3G" Icon, but in germany it is UMTS and I want to keep the U Icon
3. When upgrading the Radio ROM, will everything still work fine with the operator T-Mobile such as MobileTV, streaming, MMS, Videophonie or this automatic image compression service offered by t-mobile germany (automatically compresses all images on websites to save traffic).
Just to make you feel safe, you can go to your T-Mobile website, download your current ROM from there.
So even how good the new ROM is, if you do not like it, flash back the old one.
can anybody answer my 3 questions ?

There is NO official AKU 3 out yet for the Universal. I don't think there will ever be. ALL the AKU 3 you see here are made by members and any Universal device can use them.

bitbonk,
As mentioned there is no official AKU 3.X for Universal.
AKU 3.X ROM’s that you find here are tailored to functionality by some brilliant guys in this forum. Indeed those are generally in English.
However if you choose to use them you will lose your German language but you may able to find batches that allows you to reconfigure. I do also believe your specific T-mobile related functionality will be lost.
in case your decide to give a try for one this available ROM’s then as CWKJ has suggested you can download you current original ROM from T-Mobil for back up
However please take NOTE this forum is for guys they like to test and develop.
I think I am using my universal more for upgrading and testing some ROM’s rather for daily usage. Therefore if you decide start to use one of this ROM’s be prepared to be infected with “XDA developers Virus”. This Virus is not infecting your device but its effecting you live
This will lead you spending most of your free time in this forum and on your device.
Instead bringing news paper to “rest room” you will bring your Universal.
If anyone tries to call you on your device, they will be not able to contact you as device docked on your computer for ROM upgrade or trying any reg. code.
Your Girlfriend/wife will start to complain: “I wish you would love me same as you loving your Universal”
So bro think carefully on what you decide :0)
LOL !!! ...
Good one.
I am trying to get my other half to be infected too.
Read somewhere in this forum, cannot remember which thread, a guy say his girlfriend complaint that he is doing too much ROM. Some other guys in this forum suggest him to give his girlfiend some RAM before continue with his ROM.
LOL !!! ...
So much of joke aside.
This are all self cooked ROMs. Our hardware maker for $ making seek unlikely to give any of us any update (only once in April 06).
1. You will lose the German Language as this is a WWE (World Wide English) ROM. But you can make a search in this forum for a forumer by name Asukal who is an expert in language. You should find some language patch (for read & write) to make up for the missing German Language.
2. "3G" is a "display only bug" in the Aku3.x which should be "U" for Voice service. For Web browsing service or Video, etc, instead seeing "U", you see "G" (a bug too).
3. UMTS/3G using this ROM with Radio image (any version, but latest official T-Mobile is version 1.13.00 and some test version 1.14.10 which seems to work pretty well with this Helmi_c Aku3.5 V1.3) have no problem with Voice Call, SMS, MMS, Video Call, Web browsing, etc. Other T-Mobile specific service (MobileTV, streaming, image compression), I think it should be in your Extended Rom, not Radio. You can just flash nk.nbf (Aku part) and Radio_.nbf (radio part) and do not flash the ms_.nbf (extended rom part).
Lastly, only after flashing, you will get all your questions answer until the day you try it.
Before flashing, backup your T-Mobile splash screen (if any) because splash screen of Helmi's ROM is O2, Indra's is imate, the other 2 I have not tried.
Remember to use MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe, (do not use ROMUpgradeUt.exe), to flash.
Good luck.
thank you for your help.
So maybe there is a e preconfigured ROM/radio upgrade (AKU 3.x) with german language floating around that is known to work well with german t-mobile ? Any german t-mobilers around here?
Why not go into the helmi thread and ask if someone has a compatible german language patch? You can probably set up the T Mobile stuff manually....

Best version for Vario II?

OK. I'm ready to take the plunge since I'm not expecting T-Mobile to release an official upgrade any time soon (if ever). Before I upgrade my Vario II from WM5 to WM6, can someone answer the following questions (yes, I have read the wiki about flashing and upgrading).
1. What version is "best" for T-Mobile Vario II?
2. Can I go back to WM5 if I need to return my phone under warranty?
My desktop PC runs Vista if that makes any difference re. the choice of WM6 to use (I think some programs require ActiveSync?).
Re. 2, I see that there is a copy of the ROM on this site - does that mean I just download and install over WM6 if I need to?
Cheers.

1. Personal taste - try them out! Black Pro 2.5 has a separate T-mobile edition so I would try this first
2. Yes

Newbie anxiety!

Hi all
I've taken a good long read throughout this Upgrade to WM6 subforum, I like the idea of it a lot and want to go ahead and do it, but having never re-flashed a PDA Phone before (I've done my PSP lots of times tho but thats easy in relation) I think its very difficult to find anywhere to even begin from!
Can anybody just give me a total-overall-topdown-summary-breakdown of the steps I need to perform on a fresh T-Mobile MDA Vario II. Doesn't have to be in detail, just all the basic steps required.
The forums, whilst being great for regulars seems to just confuse me the more I read them because of all the new issues raised and the individual cases on different vendor models of the Hermes.
My phone isnt a new Vario II, but I've done nothing to it except install apps, and it is showing REALLY old bootloader (I think 1.04) and radio versions (cant remember) in the system information. I'm presuming it'll require a radio upgrade at the least.
I would really appreciate a summary of everything and I think all newbies would benefit a lot.
Specific areas of confusion and concern -
-I would like to be able to grab the existing memory contents as an image off the phone just in case I choose to return to WM5 in future, and have a way of easily restoring it with no fuss. Exactly like ghosting a PC will return the whole OS, and all files and apps. Any recommendations how?
-I cant choose which custom third party WM6 ROM to use or just use HTCs official one if I should.
-I dont know if I'll still be able to use TomTom Navigator and some games plus I'm running TCPMP with the YouTube FlashVideoBundle. Will this still work?
-Should I upgrade the radio and bootloader before thinking about moving to WM6? Is there any other areas I should be flashing/rejigging before upgrading? Eg whats this about the ExtRom and gaining more space (obviously good)?
-The vendor lock on the firmware concerns me. Is there one on the UK T-Mobile MDA Vario II? Also about what I read somewhere about how disabling the lock with one of your tools might brick the phone (or am I getting confused somewhere along the line).
-As the community moves on with further developments, the divide between n00bism (me) and l33t (you) increases - case in point - kitchens??? I'm not saying though that it shouldn't happen!
Many thanks for everybodys work.
Stu

Also, anyone know how to get rid/change the second startup screen (Blue and Green with Windows Mobile)
Whoa, subject hijack...
...oh well, not to worry.
Anyway, in response to gwtx2, I might want to go back because some little thing I need might not work, and I might require some T-Mobile support, I'm sure they'll not touch a phone thats been reflashed with unofficial fw.
Also T-Mobile might release an official WM6 Hermes upgrade too.
Besides, have you never heard of this 'take backups = a good thing' thing?
Besides, it must be relatively easy, how else would all these custom hermes firmwares be built from?
How do these guys do it?
Thx

Many thanks for pointing me towards MrVanx's Hermes Guide site.
Are you sure its fine to be using the VP3G firmware for my phone given it was derived from and is in general use with a US model AT&T 8525 (A hermes 100)?
My phone is a UK model T-Mobile MDA Vario II (A hermes 300)? Thats three differences I see (Country, operator firmware, hardware revision)!
Although MrVanx guide says the Vario II is suitable on the first page, I'm thinking its worth going for a different ROM derived from the Vario II for luck.
If I choose to go with another that was derived from the HTC official one, I'm presuming the general instructions are the same then?
eg.
#1 take down settings and xfer files.
#2 reflash HardSPL bootloader
#3 reflash radio version
#4 reflash ROM.
#5 restore settings & apps.
Am I right?
Many thanks again.
Done some stuff!
Hi all again.
Right, I've been perhaps too brave for my own good, but it turned out well!
I've installed HardSPL 2.10.Olipro on my phone, plus I've gone the whole hog and picked a very up to date radio version 1.54.00.10, I think it was originally ripped from a french firmware, I figured a Euro fw would be best suited for my UK model Hermes.
I was right I think - I now see a good fast T-Mobile home webpage, and sites load pretty good once it finds it. I also tried YouTube on TCPMP player, that seems quicker but I couldn't be totally sure.
One point I should note - When running the RUUWrapper app, AutoDetect flashed up a YES NO question on the PDA screen to accept running the program. Problem is I didn't catch it in time, so instead it threw up an autodetect error. Now after closing RUUWrapper and re-running it, it never throws up the YES NO question any more in any radio flasher (even after rebooting the PDA and the PC)! Instead I had to choose the HardSPL tickbox and the SPL 2.02/2.10 fourth option down, to continue. Slightly concerning but it worked.
Now all I need to do is up to a WM6 firmware when I choose one, it's gone well so far so my luck is bound to change!
QUESTION PLEASE-
Does anybody know the T-Mobile UK 3G Cellular Line access point password? I know the username but would need to fill in the pwd. The username is t-mobile but the pwd is ****** and wont copy paste of course! Its in the bit where you see the access point address - general.t-mobile.uk.
Many thanks to all for helping me this far.

The general answer to the first part is it doesn't really matter which provider gave you your Hermes as long as it is one. (Actually, there are some differences between Hermes models but honestly don't worry about that for now.)
Don't worry about going for a ROM that's derived from T-Mob. Basically, all the different network providers get given the latest working versions of Windows Mobile from time to time for them to either check and have a play with or to customise and release as an upgrade or in the newest issues of their phones (or as a download for current users).
My Hermes is Orange UK (i.e. SPV M3100) but I've ended up at various times having WM6 versions derived rom AT&T, T-MOb, HTC et al. The only thing that matters is that it's Windows Mobile for the Hermes.
As to going back to WM5, I think it's worth having the original ROM about. If you search around the Hermes Wiki (I'd do it but it's late and I honestly can't be bothered, soz!) you'll find a list of original ROMs available for download. Note your current version and go download it so it's there ready for you to pit back on should you ever want to. (Warranty-claim time can be a good time for that.)
I'd suggest the following as a routine, myself:
1. Note down any details you might need later such as ROM version etc. Anything that comes up briefly after soft-reset or in Device Info and About in settings and any network setting for acessing GPRS or 3G etc.
2. Download the OliPro bootloader and install. The reason for this is to protect yourself as much as possible against problems.*
3. Have a gander at all the current cooked ROMs. I'd advise initially going for a lightish version as you can always add to it with cab files for your preferred extra bits.
4. Don't go for the Kitchens yet. It's best to mess with installing ROMs before trying to make one. The people eho run the kitchen threads, and the people who wrote the tools they use, have all worked very hard on making it possible for people who don't know much to make their own version of WM6 easily. It's easy but do it later.
5. Radio is absolutely optional and in most cases not very unnecessary. Like everyone else, I always want the latest of everything just in case there's a tiny, incremental improvement but if you have no problems with reception or internet access then worry about that last, if ever. Not every radio version is 'better' than the previous. The most recent version always has the highest version number obviously, but new versions are often brought out to deal with issues in a particular geographical area (usually country-specific AND network-specific, though it may or may not be better for other users elsewhere). The latest version of radio may be better for you but it might be worse and it might stop your internet of wifi working or something. Leave it for now if you have no issues with any kind of radio-related functions.
6. Installing your apps and settings is obviously something you'll do when the phone itself is done.
*There is another BRILLIANT touch to make sure you're extra super-safe and it's particularly easy: follow this link: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_SDCardFlashing . Basically, if you keep a copy of the a ROM image (renamed to HERIMG.nbh) on your microSD card (check the wiki item for specifics) then you can flash your phone at the touch of a button (well, two butons) from there in an emergency. even if your house loses ekectrical power during the flashing process whilst it's connectedto your PC and your Hermes won't even THINK of booting with half an OS flashed to it, you can very nearly always restore the ROM by flashing from the card.
It's all dead simple one you get into it, it's just a tad worrying before you start to take a scalpel to a new toy you just paid good money for.
You'll be fine mate.
Aha! Your success story must've appeared whilst I was busy typing!
Nice one. Ah well!
WOOOHOOO! I'm on WM6!!!
Many thanks chunkymunky for all your comments, its nice to know some fellow brits are on here too. Which phone do you have?
Its also nice to know that any hermes ROM will work on my phone, and I'm definitely going to have a go at this SD card reflash at some point now I'm gaining confidence in reflashing. Having said that, I have an old HTC Blue Angel (Orange SPV something) and that used to occasionally crash and do a full hard reset, erasing everything. My hermes has never done that so SD reflashing could be moot.
As it goes I'd like to share my experiences - late last night I flashed my Vario II with Fun_Keys 1.5.2 thats based on the 3.62 WM6 ROM. It reflashed fine, and I am utterly over the moon!!!! My phone has been reborn into something far better, faster in lots of areas. T-Mobile UK be damned for not releasing an official WM6 upgrade (yet) because WM6 is noticeably faster, looks really great with the shiny black theme. etc etc etc.
And because of all the work the ROM authors have done, I now get full on HSDPA access on my phone, I get the H icon on the top bar and everything! I know the H Icon being present now doesnt mean that I didn't get HSDPA before on my original WM5 firmware, but I'm pretty sure it is muchos faster.
Besides, a while back, a guy on T-Mobile UK tech support said I'd only get HSDPA when using my phone as a modem for a laptop, not via PocketIE on the phone itself. That made me feel I'd been a bit ripped off.
Oh and TCPMP with FlashVideoBundle works fine too and the phone downs YT Videos really quickly. I don't even have a serious problem with the ATI Imageon stuffs.
I'd like to mention that after a good while using radio versio 1.54.00.10 that it works fantastically on a UK T-Mobile MDA Vario II. HSDPA access included. Not unexpected since it was on 1.05.05.00!!!
Also TomTom works fine with two different bluetooth GPS receivers I have. WM6 has granted me access to the 'External GPS' option in the control panel I was missing originally (bloody operator firmware!) - as a result Google Maps can now use my GPS too!!!
As a techie by profession, I'm also loving all the extra tools Fun_Keys put on, like the advanced configuration tool, the task manager, regedit etc.
Countless other advantages I've gained has basically brought my phone a new lease of life, now I definitely dont plan to upgrade to a newer phone any time soon.
Who would have thought such a simple thing would bring such happiness!
The only disappointment was with having to up to ActiveSync 4.5 which killed my partnerships! No biggie, and nothing to do with WM6.
a big Thank You to the XDA Developers forum in general for your tireless efforts.

every time i tried to update the rom or radio i've got the
260 error...why is that?...i have a htc mda basic t-mobile...and its sim locked to austria....can somebody tell me how to unlock it?
Hi all....
1st.. dont flash any full stock ROM cause it includes SPL and radio those (most important radio) are the first thing to brick a device...
2nd.. many times i flash back to wm6 just to test the performance, is ok but you must to stripp the stock rom and guess what?... is hard... so i suggest if you all want to go back to wm6 use the stripped att stock rom

windows 6.5 update

how will we get the free update when its out will it be via htc or microsoft

ms release it officially then the manufacturers then roll it out for their devices. htc is just one manufacturer of wm devices and you also get network branded devices i.e tmobile mda vario 5. in case of a network branded device you will need to wait for them to provide an update if they do it at all.
then there is xda where none of that matters! as soon as MS release officially there will be all the variants of it on here! once hard spl is out for this device mate watch out
as a new what is this hdspl i keep reading about
SPL's including HardSPL is explained here:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=SPL%20Questions%3F
The official ROM from HTC will be posted on their web site (reasonably soon after the release from MS):
http://www.htc.com
You'll find it under the Support (tab) on the web site. Just select the country/region of your phone (at the top right of the HTC's site) and select the phone.
The ROM update comes as a windows installer - just follow the instructions.
This is safer that blasting on custom ROMs for the squeamish like me
See here for the Custom ROM steps for the Kaiser (TyTN 2) if you want a taster

In case you mean "HSDPA" that is a cellular network connection that allows you to do voice and data at the same time. (i.e. surf the internet or send MMS while talking on the phone).
If you mean Hard SPL, read the link provided above.
when will ROM with wm6.5 will come out here?
I'm considering buying a new TP2 (I have a TP with wm6.5) but I want to change when wm6.5 is available for TP2.
I guess I won't be used to WM6.1 anymore... lol
