If you want to be a ROM Builder.... - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro Software Upgrading

This question is mostly targeted at the Senior Members, especially - Jwrightmcps, and Helmi.
What tools do you need?
I am guessing that an obvious one is Visual Studio 2005, but I know that this alone is not enough? Can you guys fill in the blanks?

you couldn't be more wrong
Visual studio is not required and even if you had it it wouldn't be any use at all
every method i know is based around maimach's imgfs tools, and some also on Bepe's ROMKitchen. there are also quite a few variants of these floating around with .bat files written to help automate things... Ivan's and Tuatara's are examples of this. Basically you NEED IMGFS tools and ROMKitchen is optional. personally I just use IMGFS tools with Ivan's automators, and occasionally one program from tuatara's pack as it is not in ivans (but it is buggy too )
If you want to get into ROM building the best advice i can give you is to offer to help a current ROM builder, an apprentice if you like, it's how I learnt the in's and out's (Thanks Ivan).
Hope i was some help.

hi
how can i find out if i have
HTC UNIVERSAL ON MY ORANGE SPV M5000
Thanks

HTC universal is the original name of the device.
Orange then rebrand the HTC (manufacturer name) Universal(device name) to M5000(orange sale name)

So, so basically - the following tools should be enough:
1. http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=ROMkitchen
2. http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=WM5EditROM
3. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...roductID=F8AF6708-EDCB-472A-829D-F73D951C35A1

However, I fail to understand how you believe that Visual Studio 2005 is totally irrelevant. The following should disprove your view:

Are you talking about modifying a ROM or building a new ROM by youself?
Modifying a available ROM is easy because of mamaich's IMGFS tools and hv tools.
But there's no WM6 ROMkitchen for Universal.Anyone have released it yet?
By the way,Helmi's WM6 ROM is still the best.

Well, I was talking about "Building a ROM" .... as in building it from scratch. Modifying a ROM isn't exactly, well .... helpful to the PocketPC Community at large since there are already A LOT of people who modify ROMs of other people/companies.
Since you have Heli's ROM, can you describe how the battery performance of your Universal with Helmi's WM6 is?

I want to learn how to cook a rom

I want to learn how to cook a rom but i dont know where to start. whats the best programme to use? any tutorals? please help
Search for Kitchens.
You use kitchens to cook roms.
The wiki has lots of information to ramp your base knowledge.
I second the suggestion to Search for Kitchen, both in the forums and the wiki. It's all here.
Then the easiest place to start is with matts Pandora Kitchen.
Then as you get more comfortable , I like Core Kithen, he even includes a tutorial.
A great search tool that I use:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=298893
It keeps me from asking questions that have been asked a thousand times.
Best kitchen documentation is available in Wizard forum. Download Faria's kitchen and read the instructions with it. Cooking concept is the same for both the devices, just the OS is different.
Once you have the knowledge, you can try matt's Pandora or RomDonald's
PS: Do not use wizard kitchen to cook a hermes ROM

no, it's moving files around, running applications, and clicking checkboxes. Super easy once you get rolling.
is there a good tutoral for these things or is a lot of it just trial and error. any good tips? dont want to risk bricking my device more than i have to.

is there a kitchen that runs on vista? i was tring to downgrade the reinstall to dual boot with xp but it says theres no hard drive whe i try to install so i need one comatable with vista
Download the pandora kitchen....give that a bit of a play with.
I am interested in where can I find base OS roms. I would like to cook my own rom and for example to use build 5.2.2000 WM6. Where can I find it?

I dont think .2000 has been ported yet for hermes...if you can port it for hermes, then you are a chef (like faria or Schap's, etc)...but for us cooks, find the ROM you like (eg. Schap's 4.0 or Pandora's, etc), extract OS and start playing with it.
so far ive read up on the pandora kitchen post and the others suggested in this post. it seems like the easyest to use it the pandora kitchen but it dosnt seem to run. the build os programme stops responding. im currently downloading the latest .net but it might be because i have vista. i cant downgrade to xp due to a problem with my hard drive. should be getting a new one this week but would like not to have to dual boot to save hard drive space plus i like vista.

To ensure you have configured the kitchen correctly (ie put the components in the correct location after downloading), try downloading the Pandora Naked kitchen from it's rom thread (in my sig). It's a complete package - so extract it into a folder and try running BuildOS. If it fails - it's your PC. If it works - it's the way you assembled it.

6.1 Elf ROM for play/butchering

Not sure where to put this because it is not WM6 nor for the Hermes, but here's a link to the Elf 6.1 rom as provided by Pumpiron579.
I haven't tried to extract it yet - but it might be interesting to see what apps are included.
RapidShare Link
Mods feel free to move / delete as necessary.
Elf Rom OEM and SYS
Hi Matt,
If anyone is interested in trying whatever new apps are in this rom, I've made it a bit easier to experiment by breaking it down into the constituent OEM and SYS folders.
As the experienced know, Bepe's package tool doesn't always do a 100% job of isolating individual packages, but often you can get away with directly replacing the folders from one rom into another.
Elf Rom 6.1 OEM and SYS
Have fun!
Thanks! I wanted to poke around in it, but have too many projects burning to learn the scoop on dumping the 6.1's yet.
Say - do we have a good tool yet that I'm clueless to? I tried HyperCore, but with no luck. I'm curious how the image is constructed differently, and why / what benefit it is in these changes.
There's lots of nifty new stuff popping up and, well, dumping and discovering can be fun sometimes (better than corn in poo for a 2 year old!)
You can dump it easily with imgfs -kaiser command.

What kitchen is this based on? If it's 6.5, when should we expect a 6.1?
Or, could we get instructions on what all needs to be moved and replaced to get it working with another kitchen? I would really like to try it on my kitchen, just because I have it just how I like it.

Ok, but I'm sticking with 6.1 for now, till there is an official/stable non time limited 6.5.
So hopefully we can get instructions on putting lzx into a 6.1 rom (my kitchen is based on josh's 20931).
I could see that as being very useful here.

i doubt you would have a problem using this kitchen for wm6.1 as long as you have the right files for the rom.
In my signature you can find a link to my 4shared account - and in it there're some OEM packages of mine (apart from many other things).
edit:
hmmm... or not it's not in the sig!
here it goes:

just wondering if anyone has a dump for the 21501 build for use with josh's kitchen. ive been trying to do it for the past 2 days but vista isnt being nice and some of the apps with it arent working properly for me wanted to add it to tis post and use myself of course. grr i hate vista never had trouble when i had xp and now i cant downgrade either. id get a cheap second laptop just for rom cooking if i could afford it.
I now have the newer build and ive added it the the lzx kitchen ill add it to the first post once its uploaded and add everyone elses additions so no one can miss it

Looking for a 6.5 ROM like the one in the VS Emulator

Hello,
I´m totally new to ROMs and I hope my question is not rude or something!
Is there anywhere a ROM for my Artemis (O2 XDA) which is totaly clean like the Emulator ROMs in Visual Studio? Without any additional Software from Third Party Vendors? I want to develop a software on WM 6.5 but don`t want to buy a new Device and in fact that it is only a development Device I need and want only a really clean 6.5 ROM. Can you recomend a ROM?
Thank you very much!
dragi
You could try my 6.5 rom, or either Thormdac's or emrulez's 6.5 ROMS.
Theres no totally clean rom, just like on computers, you need drivers and software if you want to use that correctly. You need OEMDrivers and if you want to use the camera, u need Camera + mHubVO + DShow and without power, wlansettings and backlight you cant use some settings and if you need them, you need htcutil and maybe the shared modules. And mybe you need fmradio too. So theres no clean rom, if you want one, you can remove the other files from my kitchen. Good luck!
OK, thx for that information. Does anyone know, if there is a ROM with Windows Mobile Marketplace installed? I have now on my Device thormdac´s 23409 Image but that one is without Marketplace. And a second question, is it now in every 6.5 ROM that the Start Icon is in the Bottom Bar with that really bad looking Buttons?!
Thank you

Yes evrey new build over 230XX has the start menu, also why do you want the marketplace? My Rom version 0.1 has the marketplace only there start menu problems in WWE version
Marketplace would be nice, because I´m developing Software for the Marketplace...and the Emulator is so slow that it is now fun to browse in the Emulator.
I really don´t understand the reason why they made such an ugly Bottombar...it lookes so nice in the builds before 230xx
dragi
I don't know, I quite like it
Plus, the final build of 6.5 should be out a little before Oct 6th, so expect some more GUI changes
You´re right, I didn´t realize that there is still no final Build from MS available! But I really hope someone will make a nearly clean Build including Marketplace

Does this mean we can remove some built in application from any rom by using your kitchen?
I'm too looking forward to remove some unusable application that came along with the ROM, in a hope to increase the Program free memory. I am sure you Masters have some thing to enlighten me .
Thanks & Regards.
You can remove what you want.
Who need marketplace and have problems with our roms: why dont ask these questions in roms' topic, maybe someone can help you (just like me, i want to help everyone, only thing what you should do is make a request - so if you need something like Marketplace, i can try to make a cab for that).

WM 6.5.3 TG01 working .cab?

Hi
So, not entirely sure why MS went and released 6.5 when the prettier, more usable, 6.5.3 was just around the corner, but hay.
I've seen tell of WM 6.5.3 working on the TG01, but so far my searches have only pointed to roms for HTC devices (not surprisingly). Does anyone know of a working 6.5.3 update .cab installer that are for UK TG01's? If so would they be very kind and point me at it!
Thanks all.

You cant update the hole OS with just a cab, you would have to cook a rom with the desired Build version in your case 6.5.3, sadly there no way to cook a rom for the tg01 as of yet, so your stuck with the old UI style builds e:g 6.5

Pretty sure that's exactly what I did to go from 6.1 to 6.5 - although in that case the .cab was an installer provided by Toshiba.
I simply meant has anyone made a ROM and a simple one file system for installing it, I'm not a developer, more an enthusiastic amateur... Im likely to brick my only phone if I get much more complicated than compiled installers.

You actually can, it's called Image Update, and it's been around since WM5 (though mostly unused). Image Update allows special .cab.pkg updater files to write to ROM, update the XIP, replace critical files, and resize partitions on the fly, among other features, all while keeping user data unharmed. Also, if you hard reset, the updates still remain. There are some developers, such as Da_G and ND4SPD among others, working on utilizing Image Update for chefs, to put out updates for their ROMs instead of making users hard reset and lose their data each ROM release. It's really quite an interesting project, you might be interested in taking a look for yourself. Link's here.
The TG01 is the first device I know of that utilizes the Image Update system for ROM upgrades, although AT&T has started putting out Windows Mobile hotfixes in .cab.pkg format for select devices, ensuring the updates are permanent yet won't harm user data. Unfortunately, the TG01 .cab.pkg files need to be signed by Toshiba, and although there are 6.5.x ROMs for the TG01 (the demo models at CES 2010 were running 6.5.x) they're probably all internal and I'd bet very well guarded.

Unfortunately, the TG01 .cab.pkg files need to be signed by Toshiba, and although there are 6.5.x ROMs for the TG01 (the demo models at CES 2010 were running 6.5.x) they're probably all internal and I'd bet very well guarded.

I might not know a lot about smart phone OS's but I do know quite a bit about computing in general, enough to know that when I download and install a .cab file from Toshiba which writes to ROM and updates the OS from 6.1 to 6.5... that. it. actually. happened.
I'm new to this I'm not hallucinating.
Thanks DaveTheTytnIIGuy for that, interesting to know that the TG01 is new in operating like this, as it's the first Smartphone I've used as my day-to-day handset (as opposed to just messing around with old ones) I didn't realise this wasn't more widespread*.
I understand that Toshiba never planned to release with 6.1 but delays to 6.5 forced them to go to market with 6.1 and their half baked 'stripe' theme bolted on. Perhaps the use of a cab.pkg installer was the bast way they could allow non-technical users to quickly and easily get their handsets working as they where intended.
After all it's not like people can feel like they would be able to ask for help on a forum or something, that would just get patronising ***** insulting their intelegence...
So now I guess I have research to do as to how cooked ROM's are usually installed, and if someone has cooked one for the TG yet.
Cheers.
Just out of curiosity:
How large was the .cab?
How much free storage space do you now have on your device? (Settings->System->Memory)
What build of WM 6.5 are you currently running? (Settings->System->About)
Also, if the file you downloaded was a .cab (not a .cab.pkg) then it wouldn't have used the Image Update system built into Windows Mobile... there are other (much worse) methods of updating a ROM via a cab file, hence why I am asking the above questions.

Sorry I should point out i'm using the term .cab as short hand for any kind of cabinet file based installers. Actually I had forgotten an interesting point about Toshiba's file.
After putting in your IMEI number and confirming your carrier etc at Toshiba's website, you can download a .exe file (basically a self extracting archive) which contains a .tsw file.
I had actually forgotten it was this type of file, is this a Toshiba-unique format? Because strangely, when you run it the standard windows .cab installer screen appears and windows refers to the file as a .cab.pkg file (TG01WP_5005000167.tsw is the file, windows says it's installing/downloading TG01WP_5005000167.cab.pkg if I remember rightly)
A colleague with their own TG01 got a different file name when they downloaded their update a few months later... but they seem to be no differences
I currently have build 21840.5.0.60. The installer is 247mb in size. I have 205.13mb program memory, 262.53mb storage, available on the handset.
