Install wm6 from SD card - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro Software Upgrading

Sorry if this have been answerd, but I cannot find any post with the
"how to install from SD" description.
If anyone please can point me in the right direction ?, and even better if you can point at the best version/download to use.
Imate jasjar/using VGA
Edit/ I use Vista with bootcamp on Mac, so usb upgrade is not posible /
Cheers Kim

I don't believe this can be done (not least because the SD card is controlled by the ROM (the OS) which you would be overwriting and upgrading!). You may have to find yourself access to an XP machine.
Some people have suggested that WMDC in Vista can now support ROM upgrades (there is a recent upgrade to WMDC). Others have said that their upgrades stalled halfway through when trying that so if that happened to you and you didn't have access to an XP machine, you would be left with a brick.

Ok tnx, that is probably the reason i cant find a way to do it.
There are several threads saying why not us sd for upgrade, but non say how :-(
Can anyone confirm that WMDC in Vista can now support ROM upgrades ?
Edit / Still I wounder what rom most people prefer for the JasJar, i do not have a sim lock so that is not a issue.
And, is it native VGA or do I use Oz ? /

Upgrading ROM on Vista

Hey All,
If your having problems with vista use a virtual machine like vmware workstation and install a copy of xp. It saves having to dual boot or borrow a mates pc. There is a trial version for download and a beta. Anyone else thought of this?
Don't use microsoft virtual pc 2007 as it doesn't have usb support.
Good idea.... have you actually tried a full install off a virtual XP and does it work ok?
Yes i have i had some problems. Eventually i had to use the vm player so i could tell when the usb was connected. but once i figured that out. I don't have any problems.
I upgraded with wm6 2.02 rom. However i can't upgrade the radio from 1.09 to 1.15 but i don't think that is related to this issue.
Good thinking,
But I think it is risky, as virtual machines are usually unstable and doesn't have all the system resources controlled.

Simple question, cant find an answer its that easy.

You really need to look harder or just try and experiment...
Now that I've fired off the mandatory chastisement, let me try to be somewhat helpful....
When your phone is connected to your Desktop, Right click on your active sync icon in your Desktop Windows taskbar. Select "Explore". You'll get a windows explorer. You can just drag and drop the CAB file from your Windows Desktop to that folder, and viola! a Cab file is now on your PPC.
From there, explore to that same directory from your PPC using File Explorer (if you haven't figured out how to get CABs installed on your PPC yet, you probably aren't using Resco Explorer yet, either ). From the the PPC explorer, just click the CAB file and it'll install.
I hope that helps.

Ah see, mine is having issues as I am on Vista Ultimate... and well it isnt Ultimate with syncing, Guess if I use the XP comp I may have seen this with no issue.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH THOUGH! That was a big help!
obcviously your new to ppc's, Welcome to xda-devs and a world of a love and hate relationship!
just keep in mind .cab's install within the ppc and .exe's usually install with activesync while your device is connected to your pc. If you have a .exe give you a Win32 error, that means it runs on the ppc as well.
You could also send the CAB file using bluetooth OR by e-mail. Then simply receive the mail on your ppc, detach the attachment (the CAB file) and proceed from there.
By the way: after you install the CAB, you can delete it from you ppc, to save space.
Oh, and should this thread not be in the general forum in stead of WM6?

WINRAR.... is installed on my machine and cab's were viewed as RAR's (I figured everyone rar'd or zipped em, so I was unpacking them and trying to install that way of the setup.xml But I put one unpacked on the PPC and it looks like an executable so I confirmed and then installed, I am no tracking... There is a tutorial around here somewhere that someone created to explain how to get AS working or at least to change the drivers for the tool that Vista uses to the AS drivers so that you can sync in Vista.
I haven't read it myself as I am still using XP Pro and haven't needed to, but have heard several people say that it solved their Vista nightmares as far as their Hermes devices go.
The technique is described in my guide HERE give it a go, however if it doesnt work this technique is the same as described elsewhere in the forum and as such you should try to get access to an XP machine until vista is conquered.
Ive had many PMs saying it works fine so it is definatly worth a shot
In Vista, the process of copying a cab or other file from the PC to the WM device is even easier. Vista has default USB drivers that show the WM device in Vista File Explorer and you can drag and drop items from one system to the other when they are connected over USB.
If you connect a WM device and then run Windows Update, the Vista Mobile Device Center update will automatically download and you will have all the features of ActiveSync automatically.
The procedures described by Mr Vanx are of course if you want to use your Vista PC to upgrade the ROMs on your WM device and other such advanced technical things that you should avoid until you've gained some experience!
Hope this helps.

If you having problems with Vista you could install the cab file onto your memory card if you have a card reader, and then run it from your device by tapping on it. I can vouch for the Vista fix that mrvanx pointed out as I have used it myself, it is all clearly described with full screenshots and I think you should give it go, just follow each step and do exactly as it says!

Mac & WM6

how do I upgrade? and will I lose functionality with missing sync? would there be another way to connect to the laptop usint something else if missing sync isn't compatible yet, or should I just wait?
You lose missing sync It doesn't work with WM6 unfortunatly. There is no other way to connect, unless you (like me) have an Intel Mac and can use Parallels or Bootcamp
A solution for WM6 and MAC
I have been a PDA and Markspace user for many years and always have the same problem when upgrading form 2003 to WM5 to WM6. Markspace tries to keep up but there seems to always be a delay.
FINALLY I have stumbled across a solution that works really well to sync both iCal and Address Book.
Here is the link.

Give it a bash and see what you think.
To transfer files use BLUETOOTH EXPLORER.

You lose compatibility with MissingSync, which is stupid, since the phone uses the same protocol. For whatever reason, the phone detects MissingSync and refuses to continue.
I gave up on MissingSync a few months ago. It was just too buggy -- sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. Luckily I use my phone with an Exchange server, so 99% of my data is synced over the air with the server (man, that's nice after ROM updates). For moving over files, I just use bluetooth --- as far as installing applications, I ended up moving almost all of the CAB files over to the SD card since I ended up reinstalling things 2-3 times a week due to new ROM's.
ActiveSync just works; it's really a shame that M$ won't build a Mac ActiveSync client that interfaces properly with iSync and Entourage. Hell, it'd be nice if they'd give all of the specs to Mark/Space so they can build a sync client that's actually as reliable as ActiveSync. It really seems like Microsoft doesn't realize that they could make tons of money if they'd throw more support at Macs -- they make most of their money on Office and other programs, not the operating systems. Heck, if they made a Linux version of Office, they'd sell tons of copies -- and it wouldn't be that hard to recompile it, since Office Mac is already running on Unix -- they'd just have to substitute some of the Carbon libraries.
Anyway... that being said -- when I need to flash ROM's, etc; I use Parallels. Make sure you turn "Auto attach USB" and don't plug your phone in before starting Windows. It works very well - I haven't had a problem yet. But I would strongly recommend using HardSPL and not flashing radios or SPL's via Parallels, just in case -- you can easily recover from a failed OS flash, but a failed radio flash can be very bad. Use a PC for those... or even the SD flash method described in the wiki (altho the stupid .DS_Store and .Trashes files seem to mess with that and prevent it from working -- so you have to slide the card into your phone with the OS running and delete those before restarting).

actually i had issues with the "auto attach USB" feature on parallels. It would tell me that the USB device is being used by the mac os...
other than that i flash everything through parallels and haven't had a problem yet.

I have an intel mac. i just use parellels for almost everything. I use bootcamp for flashing roms. For installing programs i just transfer .cab files over with a card.
How do i send files over via bluetooth? That would be easier.

Have been using it for a couple of weeks and have upgraded and hard reset at least 20 times and it syncs perfectly everytime.

Copying files no work no more!

Howdy,
Did a search but didn't find topic?
First mistake, Dnloaded and installed latest AT&T 6 Rom to me Hermes!
Second mistake, have Vista Home Prem (ugh!) Build 6000, and
had Windows Mobile Device Center installed and worked on Win Mobile 5. Could copy and paste files to SD card!
Installed on the new Rom, now I tick WMDC > Connect > GO to SD card > to paste file / app etc and get billies
"The copy and paste has failed. The device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected!"
Even tho I can see files on SD card on laptop!
So I uninstall billies WMCD reboot laptop and reinstall WMCD and same error!
Now I can see the files on the SD Card, move the files around on the SD Card but no copy to SD card??????? I don't have a card reader as I used Win 5 and didn't need another reader!
Any suggestions, workarounds (besides getting rid of billies silly junk.)
Help please!

I will try formatting sd card if I can find a way to back it up to something!
Does anyone know of a free online Back up site that I could back up sc card with Sktools bkup?
WOW have to much great stuff on it from xda forums!
I rally don't mean to add an off topic situation, but this also started when I installed the AT&T Rom. . .
The other problem that I just found out is that the sound is on, I can hear WM player out of device, but don't have sound for Skype with or w/o headset. As I can connect to call, hear the mic on called phone, the caller hears me but I don't hear the called sound on device or head set???? Im using fling and am connected with wifi, to Skype!
At least it's charging off usb sync, which is one thing that works!
If I can't discuss anothe problem with this New Rom here please move to right place and send a forward!
I really like this board, so I don't want to do anything wrong!
Thanks
Hey there,
I did a defrag SD card NO work!
Than I did a format
Connected (thats what it says but not what it does) and copy and past NO go. . . same error!
Tried to install Sk Tools, (from pc to device as before) and no go, same error of disconnected or what ever? And since I can't do a restore form pc to device, no copy, than None of my SD base apps work, Sk Tools, fling, etc!
So is the SD corrupt!
I vista corrupt (that's a dumb Q)?
Is WMCD corrupt that was working before my new Hard Drive replacement!
Or what?
Oh yea thank you for any replys!
I am also have the same problem.
Hello to all,
I am also have the same problem. Not with the sd card but with the build-in memory. I have installed the windows vista with WMDC 6.0.
I think this problem is with the OS or with the WMDC 6.0.
Because I have an another pc with windows xp installed and there is NO problem with it. Copy and past will work perfect.
I having HTC Wizard that is qtek 9100 with WM6, NBD 9.2 installed.
If any one find the solution please let me know also.
Also conection via bluetooth to WMDC 6.0 it also not possible trying to find the solution but no luck . It will work in fine with winxp but not with the vista.
Please help.........
Many Thanks
Srikanth.K
Madefree,
I would suggest a couple of things:
- flash a different rom to your device, eg a WM 6.0 from Schaps.
- review the MrVANX guides (www.mrvanx.org).
Let us know how you get on.

Thanks wacky banana,
Well at least I know its not the SD card as I tried another with the same irritating gates error message!
I uninstalled and reinstalled WMDC three times and still no file transfer> I have to do any transfers with a cardreader! So I don't know if I can do an upgrade on the ROM as I really want to (as ATT 6 was really a downgrade!)
Thanks. . . .
I went to that link and they are upgrading the site. The following is stated at the ever begining . . .
.....Now make sure your device is on and activesync (or for vista users the WMDC) is running on your PC, connect up your device and allow it to sync. When this is done run "RUUWrapper.exe":.....
RUUWrapper.exe wasn't a link to a download so I guess "searching" is on really first on the "how to" list!
Thanks for the links and the reply, greatly appreciate any and all help at this point!
Have a good one!
How to upgrade my Qtek 9100 (HTC Wizard)?
Hello,
Sorry I wrote wrong ROM version. It is NBD 9.2 installed, NOT NBD 9.3.
Thanks
Srikanth.k
Well DUH ATT 6 allowed me to copy to a file, but only to inside the SD card from the PC but not to the card directly (root) w/o a folder to put it in!
Active Sync works but not DUH WMDC (whatever) crashed twice in one day so Im stick with clicking on My PC > than on HTC device, than Active Sync works better than DUH other option billy made!
It's a vista thing all DUH way!
Hey wacky banana took you fine advice and downladed Schaps.WWM 6.1 Pro FULL ROM and with the excellent RRU packed with it got RID of ATT's "stuff"
Still can't transfer to root of SD, unless I do it thru a cardreader, but at least I don't have DUH branded bulk! Just need to delete (turn off duh startup sounds, so everyone around don't growl at me when I reboot!
Mighty fine ROM thx for the suggestion . . . . gotta do a donate!
Later!
Copy file worked!
Hello
The problem was with the K-a-s-p-e-r-s-k-y AV that I was been installed. It was blocking me to copy the files to my PDA. When I uninstalled the app it worked perfect without any errors.
Please anyone know which is the best antivirus.....
Thanks to all.......

as far as i know the only htc that supports sd flash is the wallaby. although you should find a cable for a reasonable price on ebay.

That is not correct. Lots of devices allow you to flash via SD card, including the BA. The only catch is that in order to prepare a card for flashing, you have to have the BA connected to the computer. There is a series of mtty commands that need to be input in order to get the card to be "bootable" for SD flashing. I will post a procedure I found the other day if there is enough interest.
BTW, ares93... this is not in the wiki...

i would appreciate, if you posted a confirmed way to flash from the sd card, because i am running windows 7 x64 and up to now, i have not managed to flash with it... or vmware, virtual pc xp mode or virtualbox for that matter. i would love to try that. even if it means, preparing the sd card with an xp machine for once, assuming that mtty does not work with 7 either, because of the lack of bootloader support.
and please don't post links on how to flash in windows 7, tried all of them, don't work for me.

if it wasn't in the wiki it's probably the reason i don't know about it.
a guide would be great 'cause i'm quite new to flashing pda's. i could use all the info i get cell's aren't a problem but with pda's there are so damn many variations... btw since you have to connect it to a computer to be able to flash via sd, doesn't it kind of kill the point of doing it that way? its designed quite stupidly don't you think?

Hey Chef,
Follow this link
http://www.mikechannon.net/PDF Manuals/HTC Blue Angel Service Manual.pdf
This is the service manual for the Blue Angel directly from HTC. Towards the end, there is a section that speaks about flashing a rom from SD. The only drawback is that you have to have your device connected to the computer, which kinda beats the whole point of using a SD card. I might take it for a spin just to see if it works.
thanks, i have linked that exact service manual dozens of times for people with hardware issues, but i've never actually read it, because i never had to open my device. i didn't even know there was information like that in there thank you, i will definetely give it a try, as soon as there is a new rom.
upgrade from SD card
Hi.
Well I read this forum since I have a Blue Angle but no cable. So basicaly I cannot connect it to the computer. I was thinking if somebody can prepare an SD card for upgrade than make an image out of it and share it, than maybe this will sort the threader problem. (And my too).
Thank you.
