What about having non HTC phones on this site? - About xda-developers.com

Hi
I have a Imate JasJar and Imate PocketPC. This is a excellect site for information on HTC phones, what is the possibility of extending this site with other phones like the ETen, O2 Flame etc...
It will be very useful to compare features etc... also can be used to lobby for improved features on HTC phones.
Any view on this out there?
Thanks
Norman

I think we've discussed this before, and frankly can't remember what the answer is. We seem to be slipping a few non HTCs in here and there, but although much of what we do is generic to the Windows Mobile Platform, a lot of it is specific to HTC devices, eg rom structure, hardware hacking etc.
I think that there are other great sites out there for those devices, so the only reason to open up xda devs would be if what we do here is of such a benefit to the wider community that it outweighs stepping on those guys' toes. (Eg there are great Mio websites that a number of us frequent in addition to here)
I don't mind either way, but know that my experience is mainly HTC/Windows Mobile.
V

thanks V, any chance of listing some of these sites, I would be intrested have a look at them. Many thanks.
Norman

The JasJar - by I-Mate - actually is an HTC phone. When buying from HTC it is called the 3G UMTS. To check this out, go to http://www.htc.com/product/03-products-11.htm#1 and see your phone in all its glory, by another name. And as our old buddy "Billy Shakes" used to say, "A rose by any other name . . . "

non-htc phones in the forum

Now that o2 are producing lots of new non-htc XDA phones, are you going to open up new forum areas to talk about these phones, or is this going to remain an htc only site?
The reason I ask is that a lot of info applies whatever the device manufacturer and the more devices the site coversthe more people that will contribute.
Great point. I support this fully
The XDA stealth is certainly an XDA, yet it is not on XDA developers... Also there has not been much contribution to the atom probably because it was made by quanta
Guys the way I see it this is a HTC forum, there are a lot of phones around but if we stay on one brand then we can provide top info, tools for that brand. You Might allready have seen that there are a few things that cross devices (The BA's country code flashhing error can be over ridden by the Magicans flashing tool)
If we cover all phones then we water down our strong points.
As for the atom, it was a mistake and by the time it was noticed we allready had threads going on.
(Needless to say it might change in the future)

Sensitive material: the xda-developers point of view.

Hi Everybody,
We noticed that there is some confusion when it comes to posting sensitive material on xda-developers.com and mostly about what can and can't be posted.
We would like to clarify our point of view through this post.
Since the start of xda-developers this has always been a site that once in while has some sensitive material online, through the years this site has grown so big it's no longer possible to check every file on our servers or every post on the board, we also feel it wouldn't benefit the community if we did.
However with increased popularity comes an increased amount of legal complaints when sensitive material is found on our servers. Which is the reason why we have been more careful lately. Recently some sensitive material has shown up on the servers and we received legal complaints from companies who have the copyrights for this material, although we all feel this is very interesting and valuable material we cannot risk the future of xda-developers by ignoring the legal requests we receive, therefore this material has been taken offline.
We understand that maintaining the balance between legal and illegal is sometimes confusing and/or difficult but that is unfortunately how it works.
When it comes to posting sensitive material there are a couple suggestions we can make:
- if possible do not post the files on the xda-developers servers.
- use your common sense (if you feel something might not be legal it probably isn't).
- always keep in mind when posting software of any kind, that we will take it offline if there is a legal complaint from the copyright owner.
Warez is in no way accepted and will be removed upon discovery.
I hope this post will serve as a clear and valuable guideline.
Greetz,
Flar
Site admin.
P.s. When you have any questions you can always contact me or one of the moderators.
anyone can contact me also if they have any questions about any files you want to post.. i apparently have no life and spend way to much time on the boards, so you should get a timely response!
I totally agree
It is very important to keep safe a site with so many knowledge and so many resources online. xda-dev and all of its users have done a lot for the community, and I think that if it wasn't for this site, windows mobile devices wouldn't have been so successful.
I agree also. I think you guys do a great job and as members of this family we need to do our part
actually whenever a person types words such as "crack" or "keygen", they should be automatically eliminated or turn into something like "i am a loser".
we've been getting way too much of thieves here recently
I'm still curious about the Dutty Kaiser WM6.1 Rom Link that got removed.
Was that just a link to A rapidshare/megaupload?
Or was that on XDA servers.
Have there been anymore legal complaints about wm6.1 Roms from Kaiser 5.2.19.199 Build now heavily available on many other devices?
need your opinion
hi,
i'm doing this 'directory' for dummies for prophet users.
i made it just because want to make it as easier as it can be to be understand by the beginners.

if you or any other moderators found it is not relevant, do inform PM me.
hoping that this thread can be sticky.

It's a very tenuous and risky fine line this whole Forum draws when you really look at it.
Every cooked ROM can be looked at as a hack! using proprietory software as its basis.
Every HardSPL can be looked at as a crack! unlocking a device that is specifically locked by a manufacturer.
A keygen is developed as a standalone piece of SW that generates a code that the user decides how he alone will use.
It's all very nice to say HTC "allow" this to happen for developement while not looking anyone directly in the eyes.
Realistically, this site should only contain SW actually and completely written line-by-line by the individual...
We are all guilty in one way or another as everyone here is an accomplice after the fact!
only HTC... ??
An observation ...
This site should be open to other device that HTC.
I had 4 devices HTC, and whenever quality has declined. I believe that the next device will no longer be an HTC.
The manufacturer is rude with its customers (problem of video drivers on Kaiser and Cruise, etc.). HTC does not respond to e-mails. I was a fan of this brand. My next machine will probably be the Samsung SGH-i900 Omnia, which I hope the quality higher than the lasts touchphones HTC ...
It would be really pleasant-XDA Developers focuses on the characteristics of this Samsung Omnia ... and that we produce some new ROM test for this new phone.
But this site is perhaps subsidized by HTC?
Excuse me for my bad English (I only speak french)
well if i may interject myself,
the site should be open to all devices carried that are or will be carried by XDA. Thats the name, and thats how it ought to be. Anachronistic, but elegantly interesting

If HTC Phones where perfect, well there would prolly be less of XDA
But at least Samsung understands what the word Samera Means.
And there is some Unlocking and Cooking going on for a few Non HTC hardware Based phones out there. (Unless i'm wrong and they are HTC hardware base anyway)
But sort of back to the subject.... How about some people selling ROM's made by anyone but themselves on Amazon and whatnot?
That is beyond unsensitive.
If people are doing this. They prolly do this because they can make money of of it.
arent all roms illegal? i mean the phone statment "sorry t be so blatent forgot the actual statment name" but dealing with cellphones the statment, protects people allowing them to return the phones to there original state but not to modify the programing? just wondering probably isnt, hope it was relevant
This thread has aually raised a few questions in my mind.
what is the legality of cooking roms. Obviously cooking an ubuntu mobile rom or an android rom is perfectly legal since that software is under GPL. But my tilt has windows mobile 6 on it with no current upgrade path to winmo 6.1, other than custom cooked roms.
Since at&t has not licsensed winmo6.1 for the tilt yet (or at least hasnt offered it to the public yet) are we basically pirating software it seams likes its the same thing as having a copy of winXP and upgrading with your friends vista disk and a crack.
As far as using SPL cell phone co's have to unlock your phone on request so i dont think theres any issue with that.
I am really looking forward to the new nvidia phones coming out, im hoping they have a big user base like HTC. I must say love my kaiser but its a bit slugish an unfunctional compared to the dell axim i30 i have from 03.
Yes i can imagine as the site has grown it can be harder to keep on top of everything flying around the servers.
Plus with files like you say companies can warn you it it breaches copyright.
I will add again here i am thankful to the mods and members on xda, a very top world website.

I am sorry just thought i would point out the spelling mistake, I'll let you edit it.
I have quite good spelling and see some horrible spelling on some websites, not your little spelling mistake but some really bad stuff. I sometimes do the odd mistake more so when i am very tired.
I'm with boorishid on this one
If someone could make this a tab bit clearer to me I would be very appreciative.
Just don't understand where the line is drawn??
In all of the international conventions/treaties as well as demestic laws from various countries regarding the protection of copy rights and intellectual property rights, EXCEPTIONS are always outlined. And always For Educational & Research Puppose is one of the top exceptions.
As far as I understand, Xda-Devs site is mainly a platform for developers to exchange research information. But seems we are lack of DISCLAIMERS to make it clear on nessecary cases.
Certainly 'common sence' is important for every poster to decide what to do.
What I have found out during my stay here is, well basically everything is allowed except cracks / warez.
Anyway M$ knows about this site and has not complained, that means ....
Can chefs add warez / cracks in their ROMs ???
Some how I feel they can!

New Forums on XDA?

Hey Everyone,
As mentioned in my earlier post (please read if you have not yet already), we are considering adding non-HTC forums to the site, and are curious to hear which ones should be first. We're considering devices such as the Motorola Droid/CLIQ, plus the Samsung Omnia II and/or Acer neoTouch. What are your thoughts? We're listening!
P.S. The below excerpt is taken from my first post, and should help answer some questions.

Finally-- and hopefully this doesn't cause a mass uproar-- we are considering the idea of selectively adding non-HTC device forums (focused on Windows Mobile and Android devices). Every day we get requests from users for this, and there's really no good reason why we cannot oblige them. Already the discussion is happening in the general forums. That said, we will only add new forums if: 1. We are confident added traffic won't cause site speed to suffer; 2. We can recruit quality moderators; and 3. The content and discussion is of high quality. The only way to know these things for sure is to try it out. So, within the next 14 days we are going to add two or three non-HTC forums. The delay is to ensure the site continues to operate at a reasonable speed and so we can figure out where to put the new forums (the forum homepage is already absurdly long and cluttered). We are open to suggestions as to deserving devices for our first non-HTC forums, so give us your ideas in this thread.

MOD EDIT - The following devices are due to be added Thursday morning (CET time):
Acer neoTouch F1 S200
Acer Liquid A1 S100
Samsung Omnia II
Toshiba TG01
There may be a slight delay in adding these so no more request for the above devices
HP iPAQ HX4700
HP iPAQ HX4700, even though it is a HTC made device, would love to have a forum for it, willing to moderate as i have plenty of spare time
Much Thanks

PS, YES!!! Second Post on both threads
Long overdue!
At last !
This is a very nice forum, resourceful , frequented by the "developers" yet user/noob friendly.
People like me were / are dismayed when requests-questions for non HTC devices are placed in the hacking forum where you just cannot keep track of the threads.
More and more WM/android based devices are launched now and we should have a separate forum for them.
Maybe we can first demand a few requests for a particular device before starting a dedicated forum so that it would not fizzle out in the long run and the whole site becomes cluttered unneccessarily.
From my experience, the most requested one is: Omnia
I think the droid should make the first entry, its really popular. But thats just my opinion.
hell,whose idea was this...??
you are breaking our firs tenant which says "made by a firm called HTC"
we stood for the idea for a long time and prevented such forums to be crated and now comes some "user experience admin" who works for the "unhappy samsung motorola crowd" selling some controversial ideas
come on people,don't be ridiculous...
GREAT,just great....you could also say hello to iPhone and crappy nokias....which we fought for a long time.......great job traitor
Yes, OMNIA II and why not iPhone?
An i780 forum won't be bad too. This is the best site for i780 even if it's not (yet) officialy supported. There are several roms for it on xda and there's also an android porting for this device.
Maybe a brand forum will be great too. For example a samsung or acer or anythig else forum with some subforums like rom developemente, q&a and general discussions.

Omnia 2 is winmo, this forum is for WINMO + ANDROID ONLY!!! iPhone can go somewhere else for the people who like it
I still want one for my HTC MADE IPAQ, its in the WIKI under HTC Roadster
but hey this is..or at least was htc forum and not winmo and android forum...so...if we are expanding towards samsung, motorola and some others, why don't we go for apple too
think about it
i mean i'm not supporting any of that but....higher force wants to try it out,so if we are opening our gates for non htcs....apple is also nonhtc...so what's the difference
Toshiba TG01
Acer S200
Omnia 1 and 2
If Xda is considering to open new foruns, lets open for new top mobiles that are/were best sellers
Thanks for the feedback thus far, it's helpful. We're indeed going to stick with just Windows Mobile and Android.
But on the other side allowing non htc mobile will mean let in any mobile. So admins, how will you then manage all this? What about server load and all the technical things it will bring along? And also will there be enough staff to monitor the behaviour of each and everyone? This is no simple question. Right now I see xda dev as a small group providing quality support and devs, what will it be then? Many bloggers refer to xda dev website, it is a turning point on the htc platform. Wont allowing other brands in kill this image?

maybe the "xda-developers.com" should be changed to "apple-haters.com" because as i see everything except apple is welcome

I say expand to the iPhone field....wouldn't hurt to add it to the forums....we can say we hate it and that it suxs...whatever. XDA harbors people that want to push their phone's limits. I've been a follower of XDA for a while now, even when I had my iPhone, because the amount of talent in these forums are awesome. I say open the flood gates and bring in iPhone OS to the table. Droid and the new Dell Android would be great as well. My 2 cents
I kind of want to see a forum for the HTC Smart, running that Brew OS and a forum for the Android SE Xperia X10 and WM X2.

Official or not, this site has ALWAYS been a winmo forum. Given that HTC's devices mostly ran winmo, that's pretty much unavoidable - unless you think that all discussion/development of software that runs on non-HTC winmo devices should be banned, anyway. And the same goes for Android, now that it comprises ~half of HTC's product lineup - unless you think that half of HTC's current phones should be banned from an 'HTC forum'.
YES to new forums
I've been following XDA-Devs for quite some time now (over a year and a half, to be exact) ever since I gleefully bought my AT&T Tilt, and then was frustrated with it within a week. Prior to that, I have owned & happily modded several PPC's. I lurked on these forums for over a year before joining and asking anything. Almost every question I had was answered by patiently searching. So Junior Member, yes. Noob...not quite.
That being said, I am very heavily leaning towards replacing my battle-scarred Tilt with a Samsung Omnia II instead of a TP2 variant. Lots of pros, very few cons, at least for the things I use my device for the most. One of the BIGGEST cons, however, would be that I would lose the guidance, support, knowledge and hard-earned wisdom of the people that post here by straying from HTC.
And so I hesitate.
I've likely read posts into the multiple thousands here, and despite the device or app, or even OS under discussion, one theme runs through it all:
We love messing with our phones.
Better, stronger, faster, smarter, louder, brighter, more fun ..... ad infinitum.
So, for the sake of that common goal, I say add new forums. Break them down by manufacturer. Even iPhones. All those people that bought one, only to discover the limitations of their expensive "cool" new phone? Let's help those poor saps too, ok?
YES to new forums!!

Changes at XDA, Please Read

Hey Everyone,
I’ve been an XDA user (under another name) for a long time, but now I’ve been appointed a new role to work with Flar and the moderators to make the user experience here better. For example, some of you may have noticed that the site has gotten faster in the last several days and that there are fewer 502 gateway errors. This is no fluke—we’ve employed an expert server administrator who has been restructuring the database to allow for quicker access speeds and far fewer errors. There is still a lot of work to be done, but we’re off to a pretty good start.
Beyond improving site speed, number two on our list is to cut down on spam. We’ve already experimented with a few tactics that have had varying levels of success, and we’ll keep at it until we get it right.
We’re also working on a home page redesign (or the “portal” as some of you know it). Our goal is to make it a useful destination for finding the best content in the forums and to make it easy for users to find new information about a particular device without having to scan through dozens of threads. We are recruiting volunteers to help identify and "promote" content to the main page, which requires some writing skills (see the "news" posted to the home page in the past couple of days). If you're interested and serious about helping, send a PM to Flar; she is organizing the effort.
I look forward to working closely with you to bring about exciting new changes to XDA that will make the experience better for you.
Hi Svetius
I asked a while ago for a forum for the Roadster, HP iPAQ HX4700, unfortunatly i received no more information on the topic since I sent a PM to Flar, if this could be added as a new forum, i would be happy to moderate it

XDA in 2010
Great to know about all this changes and modifications!
XDA is the number one forum on it´s genre
Personally I think adding non HTC devices could add a lot of intensive traffic and may deviate the main objectives and efforts from what this site was created, but I will support and promote any final decision made by Owners & Admin
Count with my help if required.
Just my 2 cents
Long live to XDA!!
It's great to see another Admin aboard XDA, and a very ambitious one at that! These sound like very exciting changes XDA will be going through, and some are much needed, like spam control and an update to the portal. I look forward to watching these take effect
Amen to non-HTC devices!
As a longtime HTC fan, I appreciate the great community we have here at XDA. But I'm looking to branch out, and I recenlty purchased a Toshiba TG01 that is a powerful device and I'd love to see a forum for that if there is enough demand.
The LG Expo is also poised to be a big seller here in the states; already there is work going on with that here at XDA, so perhaps that deserves a forum (it's one of the first WinMo Snapdragon devices after all).
Long live XDA!
PS Maybe a different color scheme would be nice, the yellow has been giving me lots of eye strain recently...

If you use Firefox you might want to try this.
Very glad to hear XDA is dropping their completely non-sensical rule of not allowing non-HTC devices (oh, but we will allow Android on a WM-centric site? pfff)
Aside from l3v5y, none of the better known people on XDA I talk to on a regular bases agree with this rule (most think it's a really stupid move), so I'm sure a lot of people will be happy there will be change.
If I might be so bold as to make a couple of device suggestions:
- Samsung Omnia 2 I8000 GSM & I920 CDMA
- Samsung Omnia Pro B7610 & Giorgio Armani II B7620 (pimped pro)
- Toshiba TG-01 (aka T-01A)
- LG Expo (aka IQ, Monaco)
- Acer F1 (aka neoTouch S200)
Of course there are lots of others but most of them are quickly getting old... At least from my perspective these are the most important devices... Then again, what do I know, ey?
Nice to hear that you guys are so busy in making the experience better on XDA.
But I think we should not include those other non-HTC phones.
Personally I hate those Omnia's, they're in my opinion just crappy phones.
Sad to see it happen but you Mods probably know what's best for the community...
Sounds great to me!
It means my SE X2 will have your support!!!
Bravo!
Chainfire:
The main reason I've been opposed to extra forums is because it would impact the rest of the fora here. If the speed of this site is the first priority, and if this site can still achieve what it was made for (it's in the name really, XDA developers) then I can't really disagree.
Also, it would make a significant increase in the workload for the existing moderators, unless we recruit more....
I think it would work well if the devices selected were only ones that pass muster and are as feature rich as their HTC counterparts (e.g. Omnia II, Toshiba TG01 etc).
I'm fairly new to here, but one thing I do like is that this site is heavily slanted towards Windows Mobile. So while I think it would be great to welcome other Windows Phones into the community, I do not think that Android devices outside of HTC phones should be accepted.
This is absolutely awesome, thanks so much. Having the support of Xda-Devs is absolutely a must when buying a phone. until today buying a Samsung-device was completely unimaginable!
Maybe you can add some JS/AJAX to the page, so all device-specific subforums are folded, except the devices the user needs (multiple devices would be nice).
And IMHO you need a really good and catchy logo.
If you want me to help with designing feel free to send me a PM
What a great Decision
I am really happy to hear this. With my second smartphone (TD) i entered the world of xda developers and found answers for every question i ever had. I think it is the best place for discussions about htc devices. When i bought my Samsung Galaxy i was i little bit f***d up because of no more xda developers and it is great to hear this news now.
...hopefuly there will be a section for Galaxy Users?
I was crazy about xda back when I had an Apache/ppc 6700. But I am also a person who likes to try new things and move on to better things. There is no reason we should be penalized for buying a MOTOTOLA DROID or SAMSUNG GALAXY. Show us some love.
Great News Indeed
Wow! Just an awesome news! I think this is a realy good idea and the right way to became thes most important source for ALL Winmo (and Android) devices.
It's not nonsensical to focus on HTC devices on a website that is FOR those devices.
Imagine people asking for help with their Honda's on a Ford Mustang Forum.
As a long time XDA user, I love this website, when I got the Wizard, then the sapphire, I was insanely grateful to have such resources available to me on this site.
Eventually I got the DROID, at which point I had to abandon this forum, and all it's resources, which sucked, but I understand this isn't the place.
With that said, I am excited to see this forum open up for non HTC devices, as I will directly benefit from it. I am worried however that the forum may suffer not just in speed, but in focus. Think about those Chinese food restaurants that sell Italian food, hamburgers, and burritos, they make everything, but they don't make any one thing well. XDA forum is the equivalent of the BEST burger shop in town, so I think it is a very good idea to run a "Trial Period" and I hope for the best!
.... and yes svetius welcome on board mate
This site keeps getting better and better, I appreciate you guys taking time to consider and address suggestions (adding other popular phones-Android and Windows based) to the site. Keep up the good work guys and gals!

Developer needed: Custom WM 6.x ROM for HTC HD (will pay)

Hello,
I am posting a simple project request with a small budget in hopes that a Freelance Developer would be willing to take it on.
This project would be a good opportunity for some quick income.
My project is to build a custom ROM for my unlocked Windows Mobile 6.1 HTC Touch HD T8282 (Blackstone), for personal use.
The ROM will incorporate different aspects of the following WM HTC phones:
- HTC Touch Diamond P3700 (Rogers – Canada)
- HTC Touch Pro (Raphael) T7272
- HTC Touch HD (Blackstone) T8282 & T8285 (Telstra)
- HTC Touch Diamond 2 (Topaz) T5353
- HTC Touch Pro 2 (Rhodium) T7373
- HTC Touch HD 2 (Leo) T8585
I have done research on the XDA Developers website, and have the specifications I would like the ROM to include. Also, I have saved relevant “threads” which link to files and examples which I will upload to the project once accepted. I have also downloaded some of the key files (WM 6.1 cabs) and HD updates that I will upload as well once accepted. The majority of the files are already existing (somewhere) on the XDA Developer webiste.
I have not included updates of other HTC models (but can be found on the (HTC Worldwide site - support)
I have not included extracted oem cab files from the various HTC model stock roms.
I have not used the many other “developer” sites – the amount of information is over-whelming.
There is a YouTube link by XDA user starbase64 (German) - But I cannot post it - yet (I am a new user, 1st post) for a general idea of what I would like to accomplish:
As I do not have a programming background, I am not able to create the ROM myself, and that is why I must outsource my project. There may be additional components that are required, that I am not aware of, which I will defer to the more knowledgeable freelancer.
Currently, the shipped HTC Touch HD ROM does not support North American (Canada – Rogers) 3G speed (EDGE is max), whereas the Australian Telstra version (T8285) does support the same frequencies as North America. As all other specifications on both HD versions (’82 & ’85) are identical, I assume that the radio can be successfully switched, though I have not found a thread on the XDA Developer site showing so. This may not even be possible (therefore I defer to the more knowledgeable freelancer).
Also, as the HTC Touch HD T8282 is a Windows Mobile 6.1 phone, I would like to upgrade to WM 6.5.3 (or 6.5.5) while retaining the basic WM 6.1 GUI (not WM 6.5.x GUI), as I prefer the HTC TFlo3D shell GUI (again I defer to the more knowledgeable freelancer).
Finally, the “new” HTC Touch HD will require a compatible “HardSPL” (for flashing), which would the Freelancer’s responsibility to include in the project submission upon completion.
Communication for clarification/issues/concerns/modifications/etc... can be started once a willing freelancer has been accepted.
Freelancer.com/ca posting - Cannot post - yet.
Anyone interested please PM me.. Thanks.
This has to be a joke on so many levels. Though for your sake, here's a healthy bump for that lucky developer out there who is destine for this job.

Why would this be a joke?
I would like a custom rom, and I can't do it myself.
Look up the post on Freelancer.com/ca...
I'm willing to "donate" (pay) $100 for the project towards the dev, or the website (if they prefer).
I just want a custom rom.
Here is a more my posting on the Freelancer.com / .ca website, if interested...
http://www.freelancer.ca/projects/Android-Symbian/Developer-needed-Custom-ROM-for.html
I am not a WinMo user, so cannot comment on whether the rest of your demands are available in other ROMs (though I suspect they are), but your phone does not 3G in North America as the radio hardware is different.
There are custom ROMs out there that will likely have everything else you require, and if you are willing to pay $100 for a custom ROM for an old phone, you might as well just look at buying a newer phone that does suit your requirements, then use a readily available custom ROM for that.

Hi Mr.Lambomanx,
Thank you for replying to my thread.
The reason why I would like a custom rom, is because I really like the HTC TFlo 3D, (and Sense)and have seen how it could be modified.
I am not really a heavy app user, however, I have seen apps being cooked into roms, which (please correct me if I am wrong), seem to increase performance as it's part of the rom.
I'm really not a fan of the newer Android phones, as some of them are a little "too flashy", and don't have WMLive, or WMOffice included which I rely on.
Over the last few months I have seen some of the amazing custom roms possible, however I have not found one I want personally.
That's why I'm asking an XDA developer with no success..
Regarding the Radio for 3G on the Blackstone T8282. According to the specs (found on the HTC site), nothing differs from the T8285 Telstra apart from the frequency capability. Since the "radio" is software, why would it not be just as inter-changeable as any other piece of software?
Your feedback is greatly appreciated, as is any one else's.
Of course, TouchFlo 3D already comes with the device, but anything else that is new (like from Sense) would have to be ported over.
A built-in app is merely just one that comes with it; there is no performance difference.
When you say too flashy, what do you mean?
The radio isn't just a piece of software, it is essentially the firmware that the radio equipment runs. However, we refer to the firmware as the "radio" because there are differences and optimisations for different networks, for example.
The problem is that the phone is so old, and you'd probably not end up with a great experience running all of this new software on it. The age also means that there won't be much support for it.
You really would have a better experience buying a new phone, I'm afraid; you can find better alternatives for software that you use, and any mobile platform out there now is far superior to WM; WM is very much an old OS that has been taken too far.

Hi again Mr.L,
What I mean by "too flashy" is that I find the newer HTC Android phones have the clock, plus the weather (in the clock), plus the weather animation on the homepage. Also, the clock is now the circular analog, when it was the "flip clock" that's become HTC's "signature". Plus the whole "pinkish" look isn't my thing.
I really like this (YouTube link below) rom created by XDA user starbase64, however when contacted, he informed me that he is focusing his efforts on 'droid dev.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jjCNIZcM5s
Mr.64 has manged to combine TFlo3D with Sense on an HD.
That's the kind of "look" I like.
The things XDA users (and sights like it) create is just AWESOME.
I searched this kitchen thread from him, but there are no images for me to see if it's the video rom (plus then link goes from XDA to rapidshare - in German)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=460822
Regarding performance: I have read threads where the post-er has created a new rom that has newer, and sometimes more "things" than the original oem, and their cooked rom is producing better ram usage, is faster and better battery performance. I figured that this is related to the app being built into the rom, rather than added / installed after.
Regarding radio: The radio is firmware..? How is it possible that people can upgrade their radio with newer oem radios? (some being from a different build of the same phone)
That is why I wonder if the T8282's radio can be substituted with the T8285 Telstra. If the phone is able to upgrade the radio, shouldn't it be able to support any version of the radio found in different builds (of the same phone)?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Blackstone/Radio_Flashing
**Though I noted that radio is dependent of the rom build.
Regarding new phone: Unfortunately, I disappointed that "Balmer" made WP7 generic and HTC can't add any (well, "Sense")
I was contemplating the iPhone (mainly for the apps, and fluidity), but the "home screen" sucks.
I still want something to look at.
More than likely I will BEND OVER and get a BB (Torch 2 9850/Storm 3), mainly cause everyone keeps asking for my "pin", but I've never been all impressed with BB in general.
RIM's problem isn't really them being behind Apple. It's more of them revealing (things in the works) too far in advance causing delays.
Apple just goes: BAM! Surprise! iPadX LTE!
You have to remember that with Android, there is a huge amount of customisability. The clock can be changed for a million other ones, etc. As for the pinkishness, that's just a background
The performance improvements will be down to the optimisations the dev makes, not anything else.
The radio is that you upgrade is firmware, which can be changed for improved performance. Radio firmware is also separate from the ROM, so you can change that to whatever you like. However, the hardware is still limited to whatever it is designed to support, it is different hardware.
To be honest, if you like Sense so much, an Android phone sounds perfect for you. Sense on Android is very similar to how it was on the WM devices, like the HD2. Do take a look!

Hi Mr.L,
Thanks for your feedback, it's much appreciated.
While I do understand 'Droid's customability (real word?), I'm really not to big on 'Droid. I really don't like the "version segmentation" problems they face (though, I've "heard" Google is becoming more strict with Honeycomb). Maybe in the future I would get an Android device, if one catches my eye.
You being in the UK is sweet for receiving the newest phones, and more selection.
There's not a big selection in North America, Canada even less than the US.
Regarding the radio firmware: How do you, (or anyone) know that the T8282, is different hardware than the T8285?
I cannot find a spec sheet showing any difference.
Regarding the rom request: Another reason why I made the request is since my device (HD) is considered "legacy", I thought it would be easier to cook, since many chefs already made dishes.
Even if i cannot get the 3G radio, I could still have something like what Mr.64 created.
I thought that there would be at least one Chef willing to "microwave" a dish for me.

The problem that people claim is there with Android is fragmentation of the specification of phones on the market; to the end user, there is no effect. In my opinion, it is a load of rubbish.
We do get everything first here!
The difference is that the T8285 supports North American 3G frequencies, while the T8282 supports the rest if the world's frequencies.
The problem is that the Touch HD is very much legacy; very few support it now as a result.
Unfortunately, I can't really help you much when it comes to ROMs; I have no knowledge of WM devices. All you can do is look at the Touch HD section of XDA (is there one?) and see what you can find.
But really, don't dismiss newer platforms just like that. You really need to try Sense on a newer device; it is a full experience on Android, not just a skin on top of the OS. You'd adjust easily, and it is very well done

My suggestion is to just update you phone... Would save you alot of time and money.

Yes, most likely I will be purchasing a new phone in the near future...
HOWEVER, regardless of new or old wouldn't any "customization" not oem require an XDA Dev (or like)?
That's why I figured why not "pimp out" my HD, and that will keep me satistified until I find something a really like.
***Question:
Can Anyone tell me how much work is involved in "cooking"?
Like man hours using an existing kitchen...
I assume seasoned Chefs like Mr.Duttythoy makes his own kitchen from scratch?
How long would it have taken him to produce one of his well respected roms?
(I have a post in the mod request forum referring to my lack of programming knowledge, and how programming knowledge is a definite requirement for cooking)
SO No, I am NOT able to cook for myself.

That would be fine, but as we've established, it is now a legacy device. You certainly won't find another dev willing to work on the phone for you.
The amount of hours that goes into these ROMs is...well, it really depends on what is wanted in the ROM. We're talking hundreds of hours over a period of time. A single ROM, from scratch, if anything needs to ported, again, tens of hours.

ARGH!!!
This is frustrating!
I've checked out the new Android phones coming out this month (Rogers - Canada): HTC Evo 3D, and LG Optimus 3D.
While the 3D is VERY appealing,... (the phone) NOT my style..
Microsoft threw some nails in the WM coffin in the last few weeks, with the discontinuing of the Marketplace, and My Phone. (The Live Mesh beta was sweet, but ended)
I REALLY wanted MY rom...
Can anyone reading at least give me a quote on how much ($)they'd be willing to make it for??
(Then I can better judge if it is worthwhile (cost))
**I'm not having much luck on the Freelancer site I mentioned either...
Right now, as it stands, IF I get a new mobile soon it would be the (BIG SIGH) Blackberry Torch 9860 (Monza) - the full touch BB.
But I'm not a BB fan!
(I'm not even much of a 'Droid') fan... **not trying to offend 'Droid lovers
I'm not a chef for the Blackstone (Touch HD), so I won't be able to help you make the ROM, but I can offer a couple of pointers.
1. As was mentioned, the 3G radio hardware is different in your device to what the US frequencies are. Yes, you can update the radio firmware, but this is only tweaking what the hardware can do and how it performs, i.e. battery performance, signal strength and so forth. 3G is frequency specific and must be taken into consideration before making a device purchase because the hardware cannot be changed without swapping out the main board. If you want to do that, then it would still be cheaper to get the other device.
2. You should ask about this in the device-specific forum that you want the ROM created for. Not many devs are going to regularly check this area. You would do well to either PM them or simply post this thread in the Blackstone forum.

Well what I would of done is went to the development thread find the latest rom releases and contact that developer for this project. I was bored so I went and did half of it for you . The latest I found was the Eneregy Rom series released July 4 which is close enough. NRGZ28 makes the Energy rom series, I would get ahold of him and let him know about your project and that you are willing to pay, maybe you might get lucky

Hi again Cajun Bob,
I WOULD have posted in the HTC Touch HD forum - but, I'm pretty sure it's against the forum rules... I asked a Mod, they "said" I shouldn't (not can't), so I didn't risk it - I know how you guys are with the forum/post ish
I have TRIED to contact devs via PM, but other than the mods, or really helpful types, the reply is nil.
I'm not sure how to request a thread move...
