I have tried to install the Good Mobile messaging application on the S620 and the installer identifies the phone incorrectly. So the functionality of the Good Mobile messaging is not like it should be. The installer seems to only understand what type of phone it is if it returns the "T-Mobile Dash" words from the ROM. is there a way to modify the ROM Name even temporarily so that the app will install.(crazy idea but thought i would ask)
any help would be greatly appreciated.
There's a text file: \Windows\ModelName.txt, that you can copy out of the handset, edit and drop back in. At the prompt to overwrite, say yes. Should take care of it.
~Cheers~
P.S. Here it is attached.
That's an excellent suggestion... but I how do i get the file deleted? it's read-only and it won't let me change that....
cgg
You just drag it into the window and click ok to overwrite it. It'll do it AND add the appropriate attributes automatically.
~Cheers~
P.S. By window, I mean, open up My Computer, open Mobile Device, and navigate to the Windows folder.
If it doesnt let you overwrite it from your desktop, try doing it on the device with a thirdparty file program, like totalcommander or similar, just put the edited file in the root directory, and copy it and paste it on the device itself.
I had to dl'd the TotalCommander to get the file changed. Thanks for the suggestion!
Still doesn't seem to solve the problem. The information being retrieved from the phone must still be returning something other than T-Mobile Dash
I was able to have it replaced without issue, and straight from the desktop. Weird how you guys had to use an app to do it.
~Cheers~
Did you ever get GOOD to work? I am on WM6 and can't get the OTS installer to work on my device. Do I need to go back to WM5? How do i do that?
i could be wrong but i don't think good officially supports WM6 yet.
Thanks for the tip about the file, now my phone has got it's original name.
Ka.
Yah GOOD does not work on WM6
I had to go back to WM5 for GOOD to work, and now it works great with my companies exchange server. There are some things i don't like, but i can live. Does anyone have any different themes or homepages that are compatible with the GOOD software?

I installed a CAB file called Intellipad. I just wanted to have a feel of XDA Mini on my XDA IIs.
But, now I want to uninstall this application, there is no way that this is possible until I do a hard reset. This is what I know.
Is there any less tedious way of doing so?
Thanks,
Siddharth
can u not delete it from the windows directory? i dont know as i have it and like it, but dont use it, and havent tried to remmove it. i would have thought if u look in windows and find the intelipad files if u remove them u get rid.
That would definitely stop the application from running, but I don't think it would "remove" it entirely.
Windows as an OS does not facilitate "uninstalling" the application just by deleting the files.
I already did what you have suggested, but that still leaves "Intellipad" as a choice in the "Input Type" menu at the bottom right.
Thanks,
Siddharth
practical tip
I assume you have a cab file for installing the intelipad.
open the cab file on your desktop to identify all the files that was inatalled at your phone (you may use win zip).
now that you identified all the file you may delete everything at you phone manual by finding them one by one (nice to start at windows directory).
In short I have the new Athena/Ameo, but T-mobile doesn't like anyone using MSN live etc on their web n walk tariff, hence they have excluded it from the ROM.
Question: Do any of you know if it is possible for me to copy/paste the MSN exe from my WM6 Universal and simply dump it into the Windows directory of another WM5 device (e.g. Ameo) in order to use it there?
Do you guys think it is feesable or hazardous? Appreciate any feedback on this.
Did you check if the windows directory has instmsgr.exe or not? Generally the only thing they exclude is the shortcut. They don't delete the actual application.

No, it's not present.
I've tried taking the msn mobile files from the Rom kitchen thread, copied them the the Ameos windows folder then run the instmgr.exe. Nothing happens.
Anyone else have any ideas?
Hello,
I'm trying to replace the sym.0409.txt in windows-folder. But this file is writeprotected, so I can't delete or replace it. when I try to paste the file to windows-dir I get a message "do you realy want to replace the file... blablabla". When I click "yes", windows creates a new file "copy of sym.0409.txt"
can anyone tell me how to replace write protected files in windows-directory?
i belief this discussion has nothing to do with WM6. perhaps it should be moved to a general discussion?

Depends how you are doing it....
Resco file explorer will allow you to "overwrite" file in the windows directory. If you install it you get 30days before you have to register it or remove it.
Hope that helps.
Some files can be overwritten by copying from within your desktop computer using Active Sync or Windows Mobile Device Centre, instead of directly on the device. I think.txt would fit this criteria.
.dll's need something like Resco Explorer installing on your device (on trial) and they will overwrite system files.
the windows-dir is not accessible from desktop-pc... but the resco-file-explorer-solution works fine

yes the windows folder is available from the Desktop PC
ok... thats new for me... can you tell me how? when I go to my device in desktop explorer I see a harddrive "/" and under "/" I see all the rootdirectories from the device - except the windows-dir. typing in directly "//Windows" doesn't work too.
perhapgs it's a vista-only phenomenon...

From WMDC, File Management, Browse files ...
\ Then Windows is listed.
The reason you can't see it is because you haven't unticked Hide Protected Operating System Files in CP-Appearance-Folder Options-Show Hidden Files
Edit: Herr*: Calm down, Wash was right and tried to help you with what he had available at the time.
You can overwrite the file using freeware Pocket Total Commander. I have been able to overwrite said file with this app. Sym.txt allows for entering additional characters (with umlauts....) via hardware keyboard.
Oops - ignore this.
Ok here is how you do it, folder options, view, uncheck "hide protected operating system files (recommended)". Presto, you can see it now, at least in Vista.
Hello. I installed Sprint's release of WM6.1. I have the HTC Vogue and I want to use Vista Cube2. I have successfully edited the Registry to make non-working icons point to the proper executable but I don't know what to point to for Settings and Programs. Those two icons give the "file cannot be opened... components cannot be found" error. The registry shows that they point to "\windows\htcsettings.exe" and "\windows\htcprograms.exe". Neither of those files appear in my windows directory. Can someone PLEASE take a moment to tell me to which executables the icons should be pointing? Without Settings and Programs working, I will have to go back to Sprint's Cube.
I just did a quick search for htcsettings.exe with resco explorer. that file isn't found on my device. hmm
I need a real GURU.
Thanks Dannysportbike. Apparently the programs that call Settings and Programs have a different name on some phones. The files htcsettings.exe and htcprograms.exe are not on my phone either. Does anyone know the alternate names for these programs or how I might figure out the names?

The files can be downloaded from HERE and dropped in the windows directory. Soft reset and they should work fine.

DUH! I should have thought of that sooner. Thanks much! Unfortunately there is still a problem with htcPrograms.exe. It will only run once. When I click on it a second time (even from the File Explorer), nothing happens. If I reboot it will work one time again. Any ideas?
Don't know about settings, and it sounds like you want the default Programs launcher, it's in the "\Windows" directory as "folderview.exe"

YOU ARE MY HERO! No one else seemed to have the answer for me. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!
Hey all,
I need alittle help, And yes I looked but nothing is giving me a clear answer in my searches and doesnt seem to be helping me find a way to do this to test things out.
I have been really annoyed with the 2.5 HTC Message Bug/Lag/Error/Whatever, and I have been searching thru the EU rom for hours/days, and I wanted to try some things out, but I've run across a problem. I am testing out possibly seeing is maybe the problem is maybe xml pages, so I want to play around with them and find the association as to why hitting the send key loads the msgs instantly while not doing so takes forever to load. I have a spare tp2 to do testing. But when I try to replace xml pages, it will deny me from doing so. for example, I was trying to replace the htcMsgbox.xml but everytime I try I get this error:
A system file name "htcmsgbox" already exists replacing old file with new file, I say yes, then I get this msg: "Cannot copy "htcmsgbox" access denied.
Obviously its a system file and cant be replace by normal means, so my question is how does one replace these files? I tried total commander to try and open the file to edit it, but that failed too. So can someone tell me how it can be done if at all? I even tried going into the bootloader to see if I could replace files, but that didnt work too, and searching here unless you hit the right keyword isnt giving me an answer.
I guess my question is how to replace any system file be it XML or exe, I know some can be done by disabling Manila, but how of the others?
Thanx for the response.
42 views and no answer? Okay then *Bump*
I don't think it's possible.
I believe that the only way to get at those ROM-locked files, is to open it up in a kitchen...and even then I'm not sure that everything is accessbile
Would the SDKCert cab allow me to replace the XML pages? I would think that when you reboot the phone and go to the home screen the Msging app isnt loaded so why would the xml pages be locked from being changed, when there is other xml pages for other apps in the system not loaded and you can alter them? I am not a programmer right off the bat, but I noticed little stupid things which knowing how Windows works would cause programs or aml pages that would normally seem okay because it runs, window would run it slower because it cant translate something that didnt even have anything to do with the mail xml page or the program, and I found a couple of xml pages that have these stupid errors and thought of replacing them to see if that could be the case, I can copy them off the phone fine, but I cant replace them to test my theories out.
Help!

You generally can overwrite ROM files with the same file name in the same directory. If you want to modify a file, copy it to your storage card, change the properties to not be "read only", then copy it back to the former location.
This won't work for any system files that are actually in use.
In your case, it appears that "htcmsgbox" is being used by the system. I think you might be able to get past this particular one by disabling the HTC notifications system. Do a search - it is a registry mod.
Okay the notification system you wouldnt be by chance talking about the events notification for sms mms email reminders would you? And I made the change on my desktop then copied it back to storage and then tried to overwrite the file, but I did change the attrib back to read only before trying to copy it back...
Most of the XML pages used by HTC is in use
sigh....
