Dash vs. treo 700w One-handed operation - HTC Excalibur

I am strongly considering ditching my Treo 700w for a Dash. The reason: due to the severe memory limitations on the Treo 700w, I am forced to use the Treo 700w more like a smartphone than a pocket pc phone.
For example, Voice Command and Transcriber are unusable since neither can be used while another app is running without the device crashing. For me, these are defining features that are unusable on the 700w. Also, the 240x240 screen is too small to make pocket excel useful, or to read e-books. Windows media player is decent with a 2G storage card so music playback is acceptible, but the small screen hampers usability for viewing pics or videos.
As a result, the one thing that has consistently impressed me about the Treo 700w, and which keeps me from smashing it in frustration, is the ease of placing calls, doing PIM lookups, and performing google searches on the go using one hand. How does the Dash compare? Given the lack of a touch screen, I am concerned that one-handed operation is severely impaired - especially compared to the Treo 700w. Thoughts?

the dash/s620 has to be just as good if not better, otherwise there's no way to navigate on smartphone os

Thanks JwY. I realize that navigation on smartphone OS has to be via buttons since there is no touch screen. What I was wondering was whether the Dash would require more keystrokes/actions to do something that is done with less effort with the Treo 700w --given the UI extensions that Palm has developed for the 700w.
For example, while driving I can dial someone by just using my thumb to enter a few letters of the name, using the dpad to scroll to and select/highlight the right name then pressing the dpad center button to dial. This works way better that the T9/xT9 on a PPCPE device as the 700w will find the name I'm looking for after only 3-4 letters.
Another example: while driving I can do a one-handed google search by scrolling down to the google search panel, then using my thumb to enter the search phrase, then use the d-pad to scroll through results. If the results include phone numbers, I can use the dpad directional keys to navigate to the number I want then press the dpad center button to dial.
Checking voicemail is also virtually effortless on the Treo 700w due to the voice mail applet.
Net-net, the Palm UI enhancements on the 700w are a step above what is natively included in WM5 from my experience -- and therefore hard to step back from. That's why I would love to hear from someone who has used both the 700w and the Dash.

i think you also posted this on hofo? i gave you a more detailed explanation there, so i hope it helps. if not let me know, then i'll retype it here (i'm more active on hofo).

I Have The 750v And The Dash, Im Using The 750 Now But The Dash Is Great, Better Screen And Easy To Use . However The 750 Is Easyer In The Phone Functions. Just Get Rid Of Your 700 And Get A 750

Phone functionality comparison between system 1.11 and 1.13

Hello guys, I would like to hear from You if you have similar problems in 1.13 version as I have in 1.11 test rom, any answer will help me with the upgrade decision:
- “contact” soft key is on the RIGHT when desktop is visible, on the LEFT in phone application and in the MIDDLE button during the phone call. JUST Imagine somebody in the car who wants to make a phone call….. especially with MISSING REAL HARDWARE BUTTONS to assign the contacts to…
- In the phone application – last unanswered phone call is not displayed on the phone screen – you have to click HISTORY to see it – just the same problem in the car – somebody is calling you, you can not get out the device on time, so you press twice TINY TINY green button on the hinge, and …. You call the last number you have called before…not the last missed one
- Phone application just shuts itself of and Universal comes to the desktop screen WHY? (Imagine AGAIN in the car….)
- REALLY ugly TMobile skin, but the original blue skin has to low contrast….Again IN THE CAR…
- maybe I did not try hard enough but I can not obtain predictable results with the onscreen quickdial (not to mismatch with SPEED DIAL butto which Is OK, )– how to obtain the names starting with second or third letter from the key – I don’t know, and anyway it does not work if you have about 1500 contacts as I have
- check how SPEED DIAL it was done in the old handspring TREO phones – large buttons with the names on them in two columns rather than one list, with whole screen “pages” of 12 contacts each, for me much easier to use and navigate if you have more than one screen of numbers as in the car there is no chances for easy up and down navigation, what you have to do now with the numbered list.
- With all this missing hardware buttons what happened with the D-Pad functionality – in Blue Angel it was UP- History DOWN – speed dial … but in Universal nothing works ?????
- “during the call” screen with 6 soft buttons stays on when the phone call is already finished – again you do not find the soft buttons in the right places when you want to make next call
- When I got rid of the TM skin video call button is missing, I can not use UMTS yet as it is not available in Krakow, but it will be needed some time…
- No BT icon on the desktop – no chances for the quick verification of the proper connection between headset and the unit
- I have heard that voice dialing functionality does not work when the unit is closed (I always keep it open – screen on the top)
- There is no voice dialing available when the unit is protected by the password (but this is disputable)

Help Putting it All Together

Hi.
I have been a lurker for many months, reading everything I could on the forum before getting my Verizon XV6900. I have had the phone for 3 1/2 weeks and have tried out many 3rd party apps and spent time trying to determine what was most important and useful to me. At this point I could use some opinions from those more experienced than I with these software apps and putting all this together under a unified theme or Skin? Any help , thoughts or opinions will be most appreciated, so thank you in advance.
Display Items that are most important to have at a quick glance and easy access to:
Phone Button with call history and functional call wait and reverse
Date-next appt. and access to Calendar (not sure which calendar been using standard)
Time-next alarm and access to alarms for changes
Missed calls and Voce mail button
SMS, MMS,and Email all with counts
Battery -I use the device a lot and need to know how where power is.
Bluetooth On/Off (I wear a bluetooth headset all day and almost always use on calls).
Phone Profiles to quickly silence phone or change to vibrate only.
Contacts Button I have been using Pocket CM and would like to default to it for contacts as well as Pocket CM keyboard with 2many skin.
Programs Button to get to other programs
*Things that would be nice and are somewhat important:
Speed dial with Face Contacts
Weather tab
3rd party programs I have tried like and use:
Sprite backup
S2U2, S2V, S2P
Windows Live search
Jive talk
Skyfire
pocket CM and PCM Keyboard with 2many skin and default IM cab to select
SK Tools
Total Commander
Programs and UI's I have tried but am not sure about:
SPB MS2.1-just not sure about this one in it's stock config, maybe a skin would help? It also used a lot of battery power.
Ultimate Launch -couldn't figure out how to set this up with other programs in a useful way but I liked and was impressed with how the program looked.
Point UI- loved it but it was sucking the life out of my battery and screwing my bluetooth headset-missing calls.
Phone Alarm and SPB Phone Suite - Phone suite messed up my phone ringer? Phone Alarm did not. I can barely read Phone Alarm- icons are way too small, maybe a replacement skin? Or do I need these at all?
Mem Maid- I have been using both this and SK Tools and I am not sure which is the better program? They both seem to do the same things?
Programs I uninstalled:
HHC Customizer- Didn't use
Mort Buttons, Script and Player-way too much of a novice at this point to figure them out.
Skype- didnt work

Usability With One Hand Without Keyboard?

Just wondering how well the Touch Pro 2 functions when holding with one hand?
- How easy is it making Phone Calls, Call Holding, Mute, Switching from speaker, handset, to bluetooth, Contacts, Display Keybad, etc?
- Can one text with one hand without sliding out the keyboard with on screen keyboard? Does it have a on screen keyboard
like the iphone and autocorrect when trying to text from portrait? If it does how responsive is it releative maybe someone who has used the iphone?
- Can one use the web browser without sliding out the keyboard? Can you easily navigate without having to sliding out the keyboard?
I guess overall what I am asking is that I currently have an iphone and what I really liked about it was being able to use it so well with one hand. So I am just wondering how well it functions without having to slide out the keyboard?
1. easy, Smart dial, instant touch controls for speakerphone, hold, mute bluetooth switchover, keypad display. It doesn't get any more convenient or faster.
2. HTC's touch keyboard is a breeze. Think iPhone's keyboard with a little dash of T9. Also auto-predicts add in your most commonly used words. Almost forgot, smart dial also uses most commonly used numbers.
3. Ditto on Opera web browser or Skyfire. browsing is a snap in landscape or portrait mode.

Simply put, yes, yes and yes. Try the Touch Pro 2. You will have at least 14 days with some US carriers before you can return and get your money back.
Think iPhone, but not locked down AND it has a physical keyboard too!
i had a iphone 2g and 3g jailbroken etc did alot of custom ****, gave them both to family members for tp2. It to me is a better phone in every aspect.
I find the onscreen stuff fine but actually trying to press the hardware keys while holding the phone in one hand is quite hard. You have to really strech your thumb down to the bottom of the screen, the buttons are right on the edge, that is poor design really but I guess its to maximise the screen size.
I actually dropped the phone trying to do this.

Vehicle Switch Application--rotate screen, turn on BT automatically?

As a Vogue owner, I use mine for GPS in the car, as well as being my media player, and also (obviously) as a phone.
This usage finds me frequently rotating the screen to the right, and turning on BT when I get in the car. Then when I get out, I have to undo those changes. It's a number of clicks to do this each time, and becoming something of a hassle.
I'm thinking of writing an application to automate the process. I wanted to get some feedback before I start.
1. Is anyone else interested in a project like this? (Note that this is just the beginning, additional functionality could be added, feel free to brainstorm!)
2. Is anyone who is interested in this project willing to beta-test this software?
Thanks for your input!
Shidell
Hm. I guess nobody else uses a screen flip & BT regularly as they enter/exit their vehicles? Or perhaps I'm uninformed on a better of way of doing so?
Comments/thoughts, anyone?
I would love to have a one button access to this too. On my Dream I have the power control widget. And although there is something similar for WinMo 6.5, its doesnt do the screen flip. Only Bluetooth.
I am not a developer, but I dont mind putting my Vogue up as a guinea pig!
bt
what do you use bt for? the external gps or to your stereo or monitor? My gps is internal myslf.
But otherwise yes I use mine for the exact same purpose, I would also like to output the video to my stereo monitor for larger view, audio is already working but I havent found anyway to output video either. I dont think you can on the touch vogue.
i keep BT on all the time (not discoverable though), and i used AEbutton Plus to set my camera button to rotate the screen when i hold it down.

That would be cool, I'd be willing to beta-test for you.
mapping the camera button to screen rotate is a work around but it's just that.......a work around. I use my camera function alot as well, this would be a neat app.
Glad to see there's some interest! I figured I wasn't alone. I was also using AEButton to map a flip, but then found I would flip, turn on BT, etc. Anyhow, on to the beta.
This is simply a proof of concept to prove it works functionally. This *should* work on all Vogues (and probably most other model phones), but again, this is still a beta.
Please note that there is no installer (.cab) package right now, nor any icon, and no application settings. When you launch the application, it will determine your screen's current orientation and flip it, and it will also determine your BT's current setting and flip it. That's all this will do in it's current state.
What I need from you:
What model phone do you have (assuming Vogue?)
Did the functionality work as I described? Any problems?
How would you change/improve this application?
I am considering adding a first-run type setup to determine how you want to run the flip--IE just turn on BT (as a shortcut), etc. Ideas?
Note: As it stands right now, V15 of NFSFAN's ROM using M2D will not "flip" orientation. Titanium is fine, but M2D doesn't like the "flip" and the screen will revert to standard orientation, even though the application runs as normal and will enable/disable BT.
Simply unzip this package and place it on your phone's memory--local, SD card, it doesn't matter. Make sure you include the .exe and the .dll. Then you can run the application by clicking it. Note that you can click and hold on the app. to send a shortcut to "Programs", to make it convenient to launch.

Thanks!
1. I copied the zip to my documents, unzipped it, made a shortcut
2. Pressed start, selected the (non-existant!!) icon
It works!!!!
I was able to flip screen orientation back and forth.
1. Manila
It also worked for me with Manila. The actual Manila doesn't like being in landscape, but it did not revert, and I used the start menu to launch TomTom and it stayed in landscape. Orientation did flip as you stated when exiting TomTom. When selecting the application again to turn off bluetooth it did, but ther orientation flipped portrait-landscape-portrait while bluetooth turned off
2. Titanium
Worked very well
I usually use 2 things in my car (at the same time), audio manager and TomTom, I launch each separately, have TT displayed, press the red home key, then use task manager to flip to audiomanager to switch a song if I want, then back to TomTom. I was able to do all of this and the screen stayed in landscape the whole time.
Not working with Manila isn't a big deal for me, M2D never has behaved well in Landscape, but some prgrams do (audiomanager, phone canvas). I also prefer the stand alone audio manager screen for in the car because the buttons are more finger friendly than the music tab on M2D.
I would make an icon for this program, and that's about it. Sometimes simplicity is the best.
My info is in my sig. You should preview and link this thread to the dev and hacking section. You'd get more notice and feedback.
Greeat Job!!!
I just have the camera button mapped to rotate screen; and if you hold down the camera button for a while, it opens the camera. Makes rotating the screen fast and easy.

Tilt 2 Voice Command issue

For some reason, I can't find a way to get VC to say the numbers when using the dialer instead of just unsing tones. I could do this on my Incite and prefer the positive confirmation of number pressed. Any ideas? Thanks.
settings\personal\voice command
in there you can change the setting.
I believe if you press the 'phone' option so its highlighted then press the options button on the right you'll be brought to a new window where you can change how it responds. I know it does what you want for me when I call and I have "confirm when calling by name" and "confirm when dialing by number" selected.
@Aaron, I have all three items checked, but still only get tone dialing.
wait... are you talking about when you press the number pad on the phone screen? Cause if so then yes, voice command wouldn't speak the numbers as you press each key. What voice command does is allow you to SPEAK to your phone and it will do what you say...
It's usually mapped to the phone/answer button on your phone (far left button on the bottom front of your phone) Press it but hold it down.... then say "call joe" or whoever... or "dial 3497894023"
Then it will confirm by saying "dial 3497894023?" And you have to say "yes"... and then it will dial.
There's a ton of commands: what time is it, whats my next appointment, whats the battery status, next track, play album etc etc. Just to name a few
As far as saying the number you pressed as tones when you press the actual number pad. That I don't get. I do remember I had a cab a LONG time ago when I had the touch pro that did it but, really, if you're pressing the number pad odds are you are looking at the phone right. I didn't keep it all too long. Especially when you can just press the call button as a long press and tell the phone what to dial.
This is what bordom gets you and doing a little digging....
Talking Dialpad
as I was talking about above; all this does is change it so your tones aren't.... tones.. but when you push them it will say the number instead. I would still go with using voice command though
according to some posts here it will work on the TP2
Well, I don't know what changed, but on my LG Incite I would press a number in the dialer and it would say it aloud with a nice female voice instead of a tone. It only did this for dialing since you need tones in-call to access things like voicemail or automated system prompts. IIRC, it was a choice in VC setup. I'm sure it was not a mod I made to the phone. Don't understand why M$ would take out such a needed feature for people like me with bad eyesight who prefer the voice confirmation of a dialed number. Tones are absolutely useless.
I posted a link to a thread regarding voice tone instead of the regular numeric tone you hear right above.... did you try that yet cause that seems to be what you are after? You didn't mention anything about it in your post so I wasn't sure but that's clearly what you're looking for.
Yeah, I looked at your links (thanks). Those are for an add-on program. This was a feature built-into Voice Command on WinMo 6.1 and can probably be enabled via a simple regedit since there is no longer a front end selection choice for it in VC.
not an add on program at all... you just download the "talkingkeys.cab" run it.. and it changes all the 'tones' of your numberic dial pad to voices saying the numbers...
takes all of 2 seconds to do.
Just tried it on me TP2 and it works fine very clear thanks Aaron
OK, I tried it. No joy. You have to hold the key for the duration of the sound file or it cuts off. This is not what I had with my Incite. All you had to do was press a button on the dialer and a nice, female voice would say the number. This was built into that version of VC on WinMo 6.1, it was not something I added on. I can't understand why M$ would have taken this out in 6.5 or why HTC/AT$T would have defeated it in the Tilt 2 ROM. Either way, it sucks.

It wasn't voice command or Microsoft that did that but something specific to that phone.... The dialer's for different phones are just that............. different!
Voice command is used for you giving commands to your phone or reading out appointments or incoming callers etc. It had nothing to do with the voice tone in your dial pad.
What you are saying is like asking my my Vogue didn't have a slide out keyboard, or a better resolution screen, or wifi. How unfair and stupid of HTC to not have put that in there. Again... you are comparing an LG phone here with an HTC phone.. different hardware, different OS's. different.... phones I'd be more disappointed about loosing the headphone jack then I would be about having a standard keypad tone wen switching from the Incite.
Can't really compare apples and oranges in this case I would say. If that cab I found you doesn't cut it I'm sorry but it's likely the best you're going to find. There might be some registry hacks you can do to make it so it will say the complete number just from a quick tap but I myself try and stay from dinking around with the registry. I would still say voice command trumps anything that a voice tone numeric pad would do... I either use the contact page in sense or just use voice command to dial a number I want. Seems to work just fine AND easier!
OK, if you're saying it was a function of the LG dialer, that makes more sense. It did use a completely different voice from VC.
I appreciate the link to the program you gave me. I'll probably end up using it. Would be nice if the instructions were clearer on how to install it and where to put the contents of the zip archive. Thanks again.
OK, I found a way to make this work, but with the pleasant woman's voice I wanted. Go to this site:
http://www2.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php
Try the sample voices until you find one you like. Then put in the numbers like this: one, two, three...etc. Don't forget star and pound. The commas are important as they give a pause between each number that will help when editing them into separate files. Click download and you will have a wav file with all the numbers spoken aloud. You can convert it to mp3 format or go to the next step. Open it up in a wav editor and chop each word individually and save it to your hard drive with the proper name. These sound so much better than the files included in the post about Talking Dialpad and you can get them in the language of your choice.
Here's the syntax I used. It gives you a 1 second gap between each number making it easier to edit. Copy and paste it into the box.
<Break time="1s"/> one<Break time="1s"/> two<Break time="1s"/> three<Break time="1s"/> four<Break time="1s"/> five<Break time="1s"/> six<Break time="1s"/> seven<Break time="1s"/> eight<Break time="1s"/> nine<Break time="1s"/> zero<Break time="1s"/> pound<Break time="1s"/> star
I used Crystal's voice. If someone wants to host it, I will zip the sound files and e-mail them to you.
