Universal memory upgrade? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro Software Upgrading

hi!
has anybody of you ever thought of putting a larger memory chip into the universal? has anybody done such a mod before? I thought about that as I saw the memory chip in a USB memory stick with 1GB.
I think it should be possible to change memory chips with compatible devices.
Can you imagine your universal with 1GB internal memory? :-D
has anybody experiences about that?
thanks for your reply

If you do a search, you will find several people have had the same thought. It is, however, not possible. You could put a trillion megabytes in the device, but it will only ever address 64mb of it.

you /can/ edit the amount it registers, just just need to know where in the rom file to hex edit, your best bet is to buy maicmach a universal (unless he has one) and ask him to find it out

How many MB can be stored on the XDA IIs?

I'm interested because I would like to use my IIs as an MP3 player and camera on top of the basic functions.
I am afraid if I store more than a few MP3's, pics and misc. files on it, it will run slowly. Furthermore, I honestly do not know the memory capacity in regards to storage space on the device.
It also has an SD card (I think), but I have no idea how much storage cap. is on it, since it is an all black, blank card and I can't seem to access any info on it in the interface.
Is there any way for me to know how many MBs I can store on my XDA IIs?
Help's appreciated.
You sure it's a real card? It may just be a slot cover. You should be able to use a SD card of just about any size -- I use a 1GB, but there are now 2GB (and maybe 4GB soon) cards.
yep, it's slot cover...
Damn, how oblivious am I... it is indeed just a slot cover.
But I can get insert a memory card in there, huh!? That's great, I guess that takes care of my storage problems.
Thanks a lot mate.

4GB SD cards for BlueAngel?

Hello,
I'm wondering if 4gb SD still works with our blue angel before i buy it?
I heard 2gb is working without any problem.
Thanks everyone!
Yes.
I'm using a 4GB SD card that I bought from Amazon.
thank you so much!
My Transcend 4GB card works like a charm. No tech problems whatsoever, and it's a little faster than my previous card as well (despite the speed limitations of the Blue Angel SD-reader).
But just so you know what you're getting into: as decadent as it may sound, I'm now facing a different kind of problem.
I've got about half of the card filled up with all the music I'll ever need, a TomTom map and the complete TLG (Thesaurus Linguae Graecae: every classical Greek text ever written, an invaluable research tool). Now the haunting question is, what will I do with the other half? 8)
No really, anybody got any tips? Are there any great programs out there that require a huge amount of storage space? I need to waste it on something cool or I'll explode!!!
:? I'm pretty sure this is exactly what Heidegger meant by succumbing to the inane obligations of new technological possibilities instead of using them as a means to an end... I wonder if a little "Gelassenheit" wouldn't be out of place here. So before you buy that huge sd card, ask yourself if you're ready to face the unfathomable existential void of about 2 gigs of leftover free storage!
Nah, just kidding, 4GB rules. Just buy it and don't worry about compatibility. Sorry about the rant. I've had too much coffee.

Now that might be a good idea.
A 1GB card would probably do me for everyday use, but I got a 4GB card to be used in my PDA and also as a USB drive by using it with card reader that is similar proportions to a USB drive - SanDisk MobileMate SD+ - fits on a keychain though I have to use an elastic band to stop the cap falling off. I need this so I can bring work home.
For everyday use I suppose I can fill it up with music so my PDA is more like an iPod. But I really need a large card when travelling - maps, scanned guide books and videos, music, podcasts to make the journey go quicker.
PDA as USB drive
Browsing through the forums, someone suggested using Card Export with a USB sync cable:
http://www.softick.com/pocket-pc/cardexport2/
to turn your PDA into a USB mass storage device - cool idea. Just downloaded a trial but transferring files is quite slow. Below is a quick test:
Card Export II with PPCTechs Lil' Sync Pro: 0.56MB/sec
SanDisk MobileMate SD+ Card Reader: 2.93MB/sec
It's probably because the "card reader" in the PDA is slow; I wonder if the BlueAngel supports USB 2.
Mini SD + Adapter + What to do with all the space
I've just (today) got a mini SD (2G) with SD Adapter.
The 1GB card was nearly full. (13Mb remains)
But the effect of the 2Gb... weird... or what?
Windoze XP Pro (SP2) declines to copy anything on to this SD + Adapter past the 1GB mark...
BUT...
BUT...
Microshaft's ActiveSync will??!!??
Mind you, it creates a funny looking directory list with loads of phantom file folders. But on the XDA, the files are all there, and beyond the 1Gb boundary, and they are accessible.
The card reader is one of those 50-in-1 usb jobs, with three extra USBs on the end.
Windoze File Explorer says .99Gb Used 913Mb left now.
I've yet to try this 2Gb + Adapter in my PCMCIA card adapter for my old Jornadas.
XDA now says 1019.46 in use with 913.63 free as well after copying my old 1Gb card and some 30Mb of docs I needed.
I hooked in here again to see if there was a simple fix for Windoze. Or indeed for our XDAs.
Even tried copying a folder full of txt, Doc, and PDF over to the card. When it failed on some nonsensical bad file error... which we know is wrong as the file is quite accessible on the PC where it was being copied from... we tried copying the remainder to another folder. It had a go at this and even put the copying screen with the files flying across... but they never went over and it soon failed on another error.
Getting back to your space problem... one of the things I use space on the XDA SD for now, aside from music mp3s, is audio books. I'd forgotten just how good it is to have someone read to you. Especially when it's someone like Tony Robinson reading Terry Pratchett.
Stick the XDA in top pocket, bins on, head back, and let the story take you.
We use a site which specifically caters for e-books and Audio now. I used to get them from the other more general download link sites, but this one is a bit specialised. It's called Wordhaven.
If you want a pointer to it, then please LMK.
After copying over an audio book I wanted to listen to (The Night of The Triffids, Unabridged 300 odd Meg) the XDA Settings/Memory/Storage Card reading became 1393.75 In Use, on 539.34 remains so I guess from one point of view... the XDA... it is working.
Files check out and play too.
It's just Windoze doesn't want to co-operate really with the file copying, but it still reads 1.36Gb on 539Mb remains in File Explorer.
Now why is that?
I was deliberately steered away from 4Gb for the XDA. After reading some of the accounts here I'm not too sorry we went for the 2Gb.
Does the fact that all cards we have seem to be formatted for FAT (presumably the ancient egyptian version) rather than FAT32, have anything to do with it... and why is NTFS not an option offered in Windoze format for cards??

This is very interesting since there is a new SD standard out there called SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity). From what I've been reading this standard support 4GB up to 32GB, and the old SD standard only supports up to 2GB.
What's more interesting the 4GB cards you guys are possibly referring to (?) are somewhere in between these two standards because it's too big for the regular SD standard but it's not SDHC. It's cool it still works though.
So is the 4GB card that you're talking about SDHC or "regular" SD?
They're regular SD cards not the HCSD ones, however technically since they exceed the 2GB capacity, they are no longer conforming to the SD specifications. I use the Kingmax M-Series ones without any issues.
has anyone used capacities of more than 4GB on their BA?
I have a big problem
I dont know how can I start ,, I will tell you
I bought sd card 4Gb from Ebay ,
after 3 weeks waiting came , after that I tried to fromat it from laptop, but its gave me only Less 1Gb after that I formated it from my blue angel, then gave me 4 Gb and work 100%
so I can transfer the mp3s and my data from the cardle,,
after 1 week I tried to make read it from my laptop the laptop make me format it again , and I format it ,,, but while its formatting the laptop became haaaaang :| .....
so ,, now its not working on my PCC and PC ,, when I tried to format it from the blue angle gave me , make me wait for 1 min then gave me this massege : " this storage card could not be formatted. try reinserting the card, or using a different one"
when I tried to format it from my laptop , after insert it the laptop cant read it .( its like there is no Sd card) but when I put another SDcard 256Mb its working.
so what did you think ?? do you think my sd card 4Gb this is will not working anymore or what ??

4gb SD-HC *not* working
I have a 4gb SDHC card (Peak Xtreme x150 class6) and it does *not* work with my Orange SPV M2000 (Blue Angel).
So please don't waste your money and buy one of these cards (SDHC) if you're planning to use it with your PDA and nothing else.
(I hope this helps someone and maybe saves them some ca$h)
need some help
hey there, got a problem with a new takeMS sd-card. it does not appear in file explorer or even in total commander when i put it in. im using WM6 from the wiki on my Blue Angel. a softreset also doesn't help it. what could be the problem.

Two things might be happening here:
1. Your laptop might be an old one that can't read larger SD cards. Lots of older laptops won't read anything over a certain size (e.g. 1GB). When they can't read it, they often tell you that you need to reformat it, just like you saw. Some laptops have a driver update. If not, you can always buy a cheap USB SD card reader.
2. You may have bought a fake sized SD card from Ebay. There was a spate of them formatted to display a bigger size than they really were. Probably this isn't the problem, because you formatted it from your BA.
no one got some ideas for me?

Htc Universal Memory Upgrade.

Hi
I Need Information About Upgrading The Ram Memory Of My Xda Exec.i'll Realy Appreciate A Do It Yourself Info.along With The Actual Tipe Of Memory And How Much Would Be The Maximum I Can Upgrade It To.any Info Will Be Well Appreciated!
Thanks!
the only thing I can think of is, that the Universal has some empty places for memory on the pcb.
if you are good in soldering SMD mounted memory you can check, if this is possible and where you must solder them in the universal by looking in the service manual (which also explains how to take apart the device).
the service manual you can find in the ftp of xda-developers.com.
if you do not know what is SMD etc. then just forget it as you will for sure screw up your device.
for what do you need more memory?
it has been tried, and you can find a forum post on this site about 8 - 10 months old.
there is a spare slot on the main board. it was done and added, but the OS didnt recognise the extra addition.
i find it odd. it was proposed that M$ OS limited its use, however, my wife has an IPAQ running WM5, and she has about 130mb of program memory (cant check she isnt here). Sure its not a phone, doesnt have 3G or GPRS etc, but as PDA, its fast, never runs out of memory, and has more than what mine does. So it isnt M$, it must be HTC manufacturer.
In summary, no matter how good you solder, it aint gonna work.
I also remember reading somwhere that with the extra memory the battery will drain way to fast thus rendering the upgrade utterly useless
Bro u shld really forget this thght coz as it is mentioned above dat even v know dat there is an empty slot provided by the hardware manuf. but there is no support recognized by our M$ OS .
So let's get this straight once and for all:
I've read through a lot of threads regarding this, and some ppl say that the limitation lies with WM, some say that it does NOT lie with WM, some say that you have to get the hardware correctly hooked up, some say that the soldering has to be correct.........
It seems nobody has been able to settle the issue conclusively one way or the other.
so, does a pocketpc device exist that:
a) is based on the same CPU as the uni
b) has more than 64MB of RAM (128/256)
c) has WM5/6 and it sees all of the RAM??
If such a device exists, then in theory no ROM change should be necessary, and the answer should lie with hooking up the additional/replacement chips correcctly.
Thoughts along this road?

it cant be a limitation of the "os" as atena has 128 mb ram
Think most if not all the WM6 models are now 128mb at least aren't they? Would seem to point towards HTC issue...
the universal was originally a wm2003se device with 128mb ram, they made it down to 64mb with the release of wm5, this is why the slots remain. If you can solder bga (needs an x-ray machine to verify the connections) and also find out how to get the memory noticed by the motherboard then it's a simple hex edit to make wm5/6 use it.
Interesting. Suppose I get the bga chips soldered on correctly.
1) What has to be done to wm5/6 so that the added ram gets seen?
2) I read someqhere that soldering just the bga chips is not enough. It seems that some additional parts are required. How about we get a detailed explanation going here?
Or is there a thread somewhere else about this already? I've searched around but haven't seen an explanation...
D.
Edit: while using an xray really insures that the connections are correct, I've soldered bgas before using more traditional methods (i.e.: hot plate + hot air gun). Doing this can damage the bga chips you;re trying to solder, but it is not that hard to do. Plus, I think the risk of damaging a few of the new chips you just bought is worth getting the final reward of doubling the RAM of the Uni...

That's the only reason I want to sell mine, because it has too little memory. I cannot start Navigon Mobile Navigator 6. Well I can start it but as soon as I want to search for a route to my Destination it lacks memory.
I found out that with PDAViet's ROM (one of the older Crossbow ones) where it has about 30 MB free it works, but I normaly have only about 22-24 MB left after syncing with no Program running. That's too little. This is why I wait for the Ultimate 7150 from IMATE.

That's why I'm awaiting the new ones from IMate. Perhaps they are fast as they are supposed to be. My MDA III (That's the BlueAngel) was much faster than the MDA Pro (Universal)

Nothing should be done. Device would detect 128Mb automatically if RAM is correctly soldered. The RAM detection code is identical to the code used in BlueAngel ROM, so it should be working.
I even made a patched ROM on which device always think that 128Mb RAM is installed. So the problem is in soldering

There are 2 resistors that need to be shifted. Search forum, we've published the fotos.
But that is not enough, the whole RAM is not accessible, so something else should be soldered.
Does anyone know if the new imate ultimate series will recognize an sd / mini sd card greater than 2mb??

Does anyone have one of these 2003SE Uni's, to compare hardware? Has anyone seen one of these?
It was never released as a WM2003 device though before it was changed to run WM5. Finding one is pretty much impossible if anything.. I do recall a year or two ago a chinese user of the device soldered the ram on the device and got it to detect the full 128mb. His work was never posted here though, I came across it on google a long time ago. If I find the page I'll post it here.
good god please do that!!!!!!!! I've been racking my brains out reading datasheets and googling and reading stuff about this, and I've been wondering for the longest time how come nobody has done it yet!!
Hope you find that page again!!!! I sure haven't!
D.
Has anyone tried looking for FCC or Patent Diagrams?
I've been trying emailing reviewers who had pre-production ones, especially the ones who's articles said 128mb of ram
Sounds very good all this,
Hopefully someone finds out how this is to be done.
Oh and i am willing to try it out too (hmm man too bad i cannot solder bga chips)

Memory clarification

I have read so many articles and some of them conflict with each other. I was hoping to get this cleared up. It is my understanding that the windows phone won't have removeable storage like the other WM, android, etc phones do. But I was also told that if the manufacturer designs it, the sd card internal can be replaced but when you do so you will lose all of your data and settings. Is this correct? If so, then you could put a larger card in before you setup your phone and then you would have room for multimedia and you don't have to worry about losing everything. Can somebody clarify this for me?
Technically "yes". But until some actual phones are on the market, it's very hard to answer.
However, the only data you'll only have local copies of on the SD card, is your multimedia (music) data. Everything else, including settings, will be "in the cloud", so it's not a real issue to reset the phone.
But again, we need information about the specific hardware releases for the public, before the subject can be 100% clarified.
Thanks for the info. That is what I was wanting to know. If I am going to use the phone as my pmp device as well, I will need the storage for my audio/video.
I believe they are supposed to have a minimum of 8gb of storage. This is supposed to be one of the areas that OEMs are supposed to take advantage of to differentiate their products. Give their handset appeal by tossing in a 64gb sd card.
I'm not seeing a reason you wouldn't be able to pop it open to put in a bigger card, but doing so will most likely void the warranty on the phone.
It will vary. Some will probably use internal microSD cards while others will use discrete memory chips. The minimum is 8gb. If the manufacturer does use a SD card, it is unknown how easy it will be to replace. I've seen text in the resources in the emulator saying that you must replace the original card that came with the phone. We may have to come up with a utility that formats the new cards in the way the phone needs.

[Q] Internal storage mod?

does anyone know where the internal storage is located and if I would be able to change it?
due to news of all u.s. carriers being limited to 16gb internal storage note 2's I was wondering if this would be a simple mod (don't worry, I know how to solder). the reason I assume solder is because I looked at the pictures Darkendvoid88 posted at this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1959005
and did not see an internal micro sd card slot and figured it would be an onboard chip somewhere.
if anyone could take a look at the pictures and let me know what type of chip is used i'll most likely start doing some research and probably order a 64gb version. I have the best buy black tie protection program so no worries about damaging my phone.
thanks in advance for any help I can get considering i'm looked at as a noob.
So nobody has any info on this? I would really like to try this?
Edit - My bad, I was directing you back to the thread you linked.
