2003 SE and free direct push email - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

Is there any simple way to free direct push email service on Win 2003 SE or am I doomed to Tmobile blackberry service?

upgrade to wm5 and use direct push

I don't expect it will be free but if your intention is to sync with a SP2'd Exchange server you could try RoadSync

I must admit that I have not tried it yet but a trial version is available to aloow you to try for yourself.

After hardreset I have to make I installed the roadsync and i must say I am quite happy with their push email ... it is not syncing subfolders, but there is promise for new version ... so we will see.

clarify something please.
by using direct push what happens is that the PDA connects every X minutes to the server to see mails?

try emoze...

no. with direct push you are always connected to your mail account and have your new mails on your pda AS THEY ARRIVE to your mail box.

Can anybody help to define, How push email is setup? and how it can work on imate jasjar

Exchange SP2 setup
Does anyone have any info on what is required from Exchange to set this push mail up. i.e. HTTPS access from web, etc
Also i am on vodafone so what would my device address be? i.e. sms://<number> etc? do you need this? :?
Thanks.

Hi deluxe,
Can you tell us what version of Exchange you are pointing to and are you trying to configure the sync from the device or via the ActiveSync desktop wizard?
I assume you have a AKU2 ROM installed on your device.
Setting up push email is very easy to do provided you have a box running OWA with SP2 applied (ideally SP2 on all boxes but you can get away with it just on OWA and the server with your mailbox). The default settings on the Exchange end should be enough to get you going.
You mention you’re being prompted for the device address, which implies that Exchange is falling back to using “Always Up To Date” (i.e. sending an SMS to your device each time you get a new mail). This is almost definitely not what you want to use. Are you sure you have SP2 installed?
Anyway, I am rambling so here is a simple check list.
Exchange SP2 on the OWA/Mailbox servers.
AKU2 Windows Mobile 5 Rom on the device.
ActiveSync 4.1 on the PC if you use the PC wizard.
Synchronisation with Exchange working ‘before’ trying to configure Direct Push from the scheduling options.
Access to your OWA (or ISA etc.) server via whatever means you want to run Direct Push over (i.e. WiFi, GPRS Internet APN, Private APN etc.)
Do we have any idea on the impact on the Data bill regarding the Push ? (Of course it will depend on HOW MUCH spam you receive ) but just having the PUSH always on, will this effect our data bill ?
Cheers
I am running exchange 2003 sp2, but currently do not have access outside the company .i.e. i have not nated it out. i have the website running internally so i presume i just need to nat the server to a public address.
I was trying to use activesync to set this up, and i am running the new rom.

In our simple tests your looking at about 10-12MB + mail volume on a stock config. You can make that a fair bit less by tweaking the heartbeat to a more reasonable 20-40 mins (knocks a few MB off, about 8MB + mail volume @ 40 min heartbeat).

As I assume you don't have a private APN then without making the server public (via a firewall, ISA server or as a last result simple NAT) is the only way your going to make this work.
If you use SSL make sure the cert matches the public (internet) address of your server and that you have an approperate root cert installed on your device if you use an internal CA. You can use it over HTTP just fine but it's not secure in the least and I would not suggest it unless you had a private APN.
When you have the server exposed just get manual syncing over the air going from the device, then we can tackle DirectPush.

From the speed of receive the e-mail in the TS2 demo's I've seen, would you agree that Exchange is pushing the email before the filters can scrub it? I think this would be an area of huge improvement if MS would conduct the push later down in the process of receiving/delivering the e-mail.

jmcl: REAL MAIL is a service provided by vodafone supporting imap or pop3 mail, in the case you haven't a corporate exchange server or lotus. If you have some corporative mail server, with an exchange server, vodafone doesn't add value. In this case should be nice to have a mail address where you can receive sms, in other words, imagine a mail address that is connected directly to your sms inbox. There are other applications -for example verichat- that use this sms/mail address in order to send your device messages when you are not online.
does anyone have the setting for o2 in the uk?

Push mail syncs every 10 minutes
I have a trial account with 4smartphone , push mail works great.
Although I adjusted syncing schedule from my JasJar to "As Items arrive" , it keeps syncing every 10 to 15 minutes!!
any ideas?

its not push mail unless its "As Items arrive", its just normal activesync checking,
also need the direct push enabled for it.
it does rock tho i have mine set to "As Items arrive" for peak and manual for offpeak, as im on the machine i use the account on in the evenings, so its basically now set for push mail in my working hours and manual when im at home,

I believe this is due to the heartbeat, mine seems to do the same thing....
thanks Carnivor,
but Im still confused, Direct push is enabled on my device (its yellow) and "as item arrives" is checked also, yet it keeps on syncying every 10 or 15 minutes!!
I thought it will only sync whenever I really have mail, if it keeps syncing every 10 minutes I will probably not use it because of the extreme high cost of GPRS
Sorry for the novice question but what is heartbeat!!

a heartbeat is something the exchange server sends to your phone to make sure its still connected and everything is ok, what you are seeing is not a sync its just letting you know when the last heartbeat saw recieved. I think if anyone knows different please let me know
ahh i see what you mean now, im sure i saw on the 4smartphone site that its 5mb/month data tarriff required, one could assume this is 24/7 heartbeat monitoring without the actual cost of transfering emails, that will be added ontop of the initial 5mb. its a theory

FREE PUSHMAIL SERVICE PROVIDERS

No doubt A2DP/Pushmail is an excellent feature available with Universa but at the same time is the worst thing to pay some extra money on monthly basis to use it.
Can anybody find/help to suggest free pushmail service providers?
I may be a foolish person to ask this question but anyway want to save some money which I believe everybod wants

Are you having a laugh?
Nothing is free in life, the only way your gonna get push email without subscribing to a server is to get your own exchange server.
That's like asking if u can get ADSL without paying for it
Right
Ha ha Ha
You are right but one should look into the solutions. can you tell any site which has lower charges
Try getting your own exchange server?

I think mail2web one is free? Not sure. I went with the £4/mth 4smartphone.net one, just in case. It's fecking superb.
Don't be so sure... There could be websites that could offer free Exchange Accounts in order to send you advertising emails and stuff...
Something which a lot of people would be willing to accept in many cases...
I am using http://www.vgsmail.com/ppc/ with my IMAP account, and everything is great. You only pay it once, and you can use it to receive Push email from any compatible account...
There aren't of course the advantages of an Exchange server, but it is an excellent solution for anyone first time learner you wants to see the possibilities offered by Push Email...

This note on the vgsmial website is worrying though:
"Note: We announced the future closure of this service on 31/8/2005. However, vgsmail will continue to function for the foreseeable future under the following conditions:
* Support will be reduced to an absolute minimum and will be limit to significant outages, other system-wide issues or specific problems with credit on accounts.
* No refunds will be issued for credits made after 31/8/2005. "

This only applies to the Service VGSMAIL which was a email Provider. It does NOT apply to the software for PPC which is something completely different.

I'm testing a exchange server with my own adsl connection. some people say you only need 20 mb traffic a month for pushmail, so i think 15,- will be far to much for this service.
the only thing you will need:
- adsl connection
- domain (7,- for a year)
- a computer that doesn't eat much electricity and is up for 24/7
- MS 2003 + exchange server (may be expensive....)
the only thing that will be difficult is to make good backups.
save the money for the domain and sign up at dyndns.org, it's free and made for changing IPs

I signed up for a FREE mail2web LIVE account. Sent an email from Hotmail to Yahoo Mail (set to forward to mail2web) but not seeing anything on my QTEK 9000 (with latest ROM update)
I thought mail2web LIVE is FREE?
Quote from mail2web
"Note: You cannot check your email through POP3 or send email through SMTP with your mail2web LIVE account. These features are only supported in the paid plans. You must use Outlook Web Access to check and send email."
So, its not as easy as ABC, huh?
I assume you've set up your mail2web "Exchange Server" in ActiveSync on your JasJar?
Once you're logged in to your mail2web account, you can get the settings that need to be entered into ActiveSync from "E-Mail Settings" link on the control panel:
https://support.mail2web.com/FreeServices/Exchange/ManageAccount.asp
Put the user ID and server address into AS and choose to update 'as and when' new mail arrives, and you're up and running...

Microsoft Direct Push

Has anyone been able to get direct push working on WM6? I am looking for a way to get email faster than every 15 mins. I cant use BB Connect because it does not support attachments (jpg, pdf, mp3). I need something that does.
Any suggestions?
Yeah, works great. Not much of an update from WM5 though, unless you're using Exchange 2007 (which I'm not).
Works fine for me also..
Yup working here as well from my Exchange - 2003 so no HTML mail over DP yet.
is there a link to download (I looked in the wiki)? Can someone send me the CAB.
Does it support all file types?
There's nothing to download as directpush is built in to wm5 roms (post AKU2) and WM6 roms.
BUT you either need to have an exchange server 2003 sp2 account (or exchange 2007 !) or you can rent one. There's free ones but they're not that great. If you want a really good hosted solution - try 4smartphone.com
I keep getting sync errors with this version. It allows me to set it up, but direct push does not work. I set it up for 5 minutes and it syncs fine. When I plug it into the laptop, it gives error messages that it cannot find the server, but it syncs. This is strange.
Works great for me as well ! Have no problems at all !

Direct Push not working in WM6 LVSW
Direct Push is not working for me either - WM6 LVSW Pro (Cingular) - Exchange 2003 sp2
All of my Exchange information syncs perfectly, then I get an error message:
"Your current sync schedule requires a cellular data connection. Please setup a cellular data connection as described in online Help or change the sync schedule."
Support Code: 0x85020013
The only way I can get emails while using "as items arrive" setting is to force send/receive. I have been using Direct Push on Exchange 2003 sp2 for almost a year with no problems, and there is no way I can go back to every 5 minutes.
I noticed some people are having the same problem on WMXL 2.0 Even using the Fit4cat solution mentioned in that post did not work.
I did setup My ISP settings using this Cingular CAB file . Could that have something to do with the problem?

Depending on the network, directpush itself uses between 5 and 15mb a month - just for the heartbeat and occasional syncs. If you set your email to sync only first 5kb and no big attachments, you should be able to keep the actualy email traffic down.
I have Orange's unlimited (with a 1gb FUP) and use only 100 or so mb each month all in.

Black 2.0 and Push mail

Hi there,
My TyTn have Black 2.0 inside and Radio 1.40.30.00
My questions:
Why at push mail configuration I can't write at domain field?
and
I'm using mail2web.com for push mail, so I had used it for a while. Yesterday I tryed to send a mail using Pocket Outlook but the mail keeps at Outbox folder, it doesn't want to send the mail, then I did some test an push mail have not been receiving nothing, only Contacts and Tasks. ActiveSync says that my phone was synced at XX:XX time without notice, BUT... mails are not synced, what can I do AND may this problem be derivated from fact that WM6 don't let me put a domain name in configuration? The domain field is gray and disabled.
Thanks in advance,
Taguapire.

taguapire; I suggest just re-inputing all your mail2web settings and see if that helps. Also if you head over to mail2web.com, click on support on the top right, you can go to activesync settings and download a cab to install the settings onto your device, then all you have to do is input your username and password. I'm also using the free mail2web account and have not filled in the domain and everything works flawlessly... except are you aware that their server has been going offline last week? Try to log on at the live.mail2web.com login and see if it works there.

95% o Mail2 webs accounts arer back up, u must be the 5%...
I spoke with them after one week of no syncing, and yes, most accounts were fixed, but newer accounts had problems and were being moved manually to new servers etc etc, so u just must be one of the last ones, as I was, but they did eventually fix it.
Goodluck, it works great.
Yes. That's true. The service was unstable in the past few weeks. Looks good now for me.
Very thanks to all for your replyes.
I tryed teh manual reconfiguration and the provided CAB file, but CAB never worked. Then I found the problem. I reinstalled Palm Threaded SMS in my device then it started to mess with outlook, I just did a hard reset, reinstalled all (including Palm SMS) and it is working all fine.
BTW: I can send mails using mail2web service, is not true that it only works in 1 way.
Best regards and thank you very much to all.

yup, it works fine for me too, not sure what app i have that is conflicting with it though as it seem to make my unit more unstable, will need to test further
Yep mail2web works fine here, i too also experienced issues with it in the last few weeks but it seems to be working fine now.

gmail won't push to these devices using that method.
you gotta try seven.com or other alternatives...a search will turn up a lot more information, but seven is a push alternative that works
Got it working in the end.
Solution was fairly easy after all.
Thanks
how did you get it working? as far as i knew gmail doesn't offer a push service..?
Bit of lateral thinking in the end
I found out that Windows Mobile 6 supports Hotmail push email for free without any added software. It's built in to the operating system.
I simply set my Gmail account to auto forward all email to my hotmail account. It's an option within the settings.
Voila free gmail and hotmail pushed to my phone without any 3rd party software.
Well done.
I use SEVEN and it's a wonderful piece of software, best of all it's FREE and uses the in-built mail application on your phone. So it runs in the background and then the windows mail does the rest.

presently i'm also using seven to push my mail since mail2web started charging for its push services.i have only one problem with seven.i don't get any alert when i have new mail?do u? my notification for new email is one but nothing happens.hummm...
my only issue (and its only a minor one) with seven is that the message text preview normally shown on the mail envelope icon is no longer there - all it says is 'click to view message'.
Is there any fix for this?

Bit of lateral thinking in the end
I found out that Windows Mobile 6 supports Hotmail push email for free without any added software. It's built in to the operating system.
I simply set my Gmail account to auto forward all email to my hotmail account. It's an option within the settings.

i wished i found this thread earlier, so i didnt have to create one!
but i thought about doing what binning did, but its not a real solution, you can reply but your going to be replying with your hotmail account rather than your gmail account but you get all the messages
google did release sync, but right now its only calendar and contacts from what i know of, as of an actual email sync, i heard rumors theyre working on it, but lets hope they release it soon.
but another thought is, the only thing thats missing right now is the gmail push server. blackberry bypassed this by using their own BES but only restricted to BBs obviously.
lets keep our fingers crossed and hope that google will release a gmail sync!!!! =]
edit:
im also curious but havent had time to look into it, a couple of friends of mine have the g1, the g1 supports gmail push, but how can we wm users get this to work on OWA!! if g1 supports gmail push shouldnt it be possible for us? i mean like a standalone push service rather than having to forward or use a separate server like the BES?
is seven.com free? When I try to download it, it takes me to my country operator. The link then takes me to my country's website which charges me 15$ per month to use it? I already have a 5GB data plan, why am I going to be charged 15$ to use seven.com?

Look for the Beta program instead. That's where you'll find the free software download.
Thanks furrypotato(good nick). I figured it out.
Is it reliable? I noticed that sometimes ill get the email directly (testing by sending email from another account via PC). and sometimes I wont.
Also, the internet remains connected right?
hotmail push
how does one enable push hotmail? I created a live.com account but I can't find anything in the settings for push mail.
