advice on changing ROM of T-mobile Vario - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Hello,
I have an T-mobile Vario: it is SIM-unlocked. Since it has the Dutch ROM on it, i would want to work with the English ROM. Can someone please explain to me which tools you recommend me to use and the procedure? Going through ths site, it is my understanding that i should:
1. CID unlock only (Sim is already unlocked and the MDA works fine with SFR)
2. backup my existing ROM on a SD card
3. install the new ROM
For the steps 1 and 2 I'm looking for indications which software to use and important do's and dont's.
As for the new ROM, I would appreciate a recommendation for the most-performant ROM that other T-mobile Vario users have installed.
My current system indicates:
IPL - 1.03
SPL - 1.03
GSM 1.04.10
OS - 1.3.2.3
Many thanks in advance for your highly appreciated help.
Alfred

Lokiwiz worked ok to CID the MDA
I've gone through the first step, being unlock the CID, which temrinared successfully. Could someone please advide me on how to backup my existing ROM before i install a new one? I heard about Wizbackup.exe as a possible solution, but so far i have failed to find the file. Many thanks in advance for yoru help.

Noob ROM Upgrading Questions

Hi,
I'm looking into purchasing an XDA2, and am doing some research on upgrading the ROM.
My questions:
1. Can I flash a Qtec or Imate ROM on a XDA2?
2. Does it matter whether I get the ROM from O2, T-mobile, etc? It will be used in Canada on Fido's network.
3. Some tutorials I read were really complicated, can you not just double click the file and flash the XDA2 through Active Sync?
4. How do you upgrade the Radio Stack?
5. If the phone is unlocked, will it remain unlocked after the ROM upgrade?
tnx

Rom Dumping: please clarify ...

Hi to all!
I'm a new qtek 9000 (dangaard) owner, and i started one week ago to look for tweaks and so on.. so here i am! i red every forum and many, many messages, but none gave me an answer...
Special attention (and thanks) go to buzz for his deep knowledge and tutorials.
My actual goal is to FULLY backup (dump) ALL that is needed to FULLY restore the ORIGINAL (warranty not voided) firmware/software.
To do this i tried 2 methods:
1) task32, d2m from boot loader : NO SUCCESS , usual "not allow operation" message; i have bootloadr 1.0 , so i think is not possible, BUT CAN I DOWNGRADE the loader, dump, and then RESTORE my 1.0 loader ? how to do it (if yes) ??
2) the "pdocread" method: ok, but in the qtek.raw there is NOT MY radio, and so on.... how can i get MY original ones ?
p.s. there is no official upgrade for my qtek yet... so i can't' use it only wity my pdocreaded os...
Thanks a lot to everyone!! and please give me answers )
rom dump
I too would like a simple walkthrough on how to dump Radio , Rom and Extended rom.
Hats off too Buzz and many but I have tried to make sense of various posts and all seem to go off abit for us simple folk.
Does someone out there have answers please to:
1) Can a rom back up (dump) be done.
2) When dump has completed does original rom stay on device or does dumping it mean it's gone from universal completly.
3) Can you save these images and install them back onto universal at a latter date.
If this is possible how? What software do we need to do it?
I want to update the crapy slow rom on my M5000. But to cover my arse I would like the option to restore it to it's factory shipped state if it all goes belly up!
so folks ??
does someone takes care to give us an explanation of all this ??
Hey guys, just PM me... I'm now at work but have made a word document on how to do this adn it's at home.
I also had this dilema... I have a Spanish QTEK and no official ROM so here goes....
1. If you want the .DOC, pm me where to send it - i take no responsibility for the results but will help if you get stuck somewhere or need clarification on the steps.
2. I got the my radio (1.03.00) from the english qtek ROM by copying the radio_.nbf file as radio's are not language dependent (as far as i know). The OS, i created the QTEk.RAW with pdocread, the Extended_ROM i just copied and pasted. That's how I backed-up my device that I can restore again still "under warranty" so to DUMP/BACKUP
2.1 OS : Use pdocread
2.2 Extended_ROM : Just copy and paste
2.3 Radio : Get it from a ROM update with same radio version.
Hope this helps
Hi guys,
I have a newbie question, please.
I read something about ROM is language dependent.
My O2 XDA2 has a ROM version 1.03.00 USA, can I do an upgrade to a 1.72.187 UK version? If no, is there an US version upgrade available? where can I find it?
Thanks for any help.
Alex,

!!!NO!!! WM6 Update from T-Mobile Germany....

[email protected]
i have bad news. I called T-Mobile today to ask if there would be an Update for the MDA Compact 3. The answer was : NO, there will be no Update...
Shoking... thats not a good answer.
BUT!!
I read that it would be possible to use the O2 Rom or the official HTC ROM if i CID Unlock my device. I would pay the 28€ to imei-check if this is true..
Can anyone tell me if this will really work?? Does this work without other hacking of the device??
You don't need to CID unlock to upgrade to WM6.
Check the upgrading forum..
Relax, i already wrote twice and called once. 3 different people (of course) and 3 different answers.
1: it will come arround june/july
2: they dont know when it will come exactly
3: its not planned at all
blablabla
@ hollinshead got a link for me?
Download the ROM from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=308164
Instructions for how to update / tools needed are here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299154
Make sure you install enablerapi.cab before else you'll end up with a bricked MDA and have to restore it through bootloader!
Bootloader!
How can i recover by bootloader? i have a portuguese rom! Please help me!!!
YES!
I also called T-Mobile Germany (Business Line), and they told me that they're going to release WM6 in the beginning of June.

Oliver

How to upgrade a German T-Mobile MDA compact III to WM6?

Hi everyone,
I'm looking for someone who already managed to upgrade a german T-Mobile MDA compact III to WM6. Has anyone experiences with this? It's my business phone and I don't want to break it.
1. Is there any chance to reflash the old WM5 ROM if something goes wrong?
2. How can I save the old ROM!?
3. Do I need to setup any regional settings if I use the O2 ROM for example?
Thanks for all answers!

You shurely can use the O2 ROM. Regional settings? You can change the regional settings in the ROM, but you don´t neet to if you use the german version of the O2 ROM.
There is a way to make a backup of your curent ROM to a storagecard. Use the search..
You should make a backup of your pim (contacts, tasks, calendar etc.) with PPCPimBackup because you can restor them with thiis program, but not with SPB Backup..
Is your phone sim- or netlocked? Normally the german tmob devices are..
IMPORTANT: You can update - but before you flash your rom with any new os (like the O2) do the "uspl" (CID Unlock) first!
Look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=308242
I have updated mine. Everything works fine, but the menues are in English.
The phone must be CID unlocked then you can flash any ROM you like. You can also find a CAB for T9 input in German.
Ciao
Thanks a lot guys for all the information. I'll report later if it worked...
Success
Thanks for all your information!
Everything worked fine.
At first I tried to make an backup, but I was not really successful, see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=312871&page=5
But it didn't matter because I found a german wm5 rom for t-mobile:
XDA-DEV FTP -> "Uploads/Upload/Official MDA Compact III ROM/MDA Compact III German.exe"
So here is a conclusion for all noobs, like me:
1. Run USPL, get it here and read all the stuff: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=311403
2. Patch any ROM you like, for example one of those: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=362 or get one on the xda-dev ftp
I tried three or four of the ROMs from the forum, it was possible to flash them all, but I had to try it twice to "remove" the german O2 ROM (flash another ROM over the O2), but maybe I did something wrong in the first place.
What I would finally like is a T-Mobile branded german WM6 ROM. If anyone could give me some tipps where to start, I would appreciate it. I think it should be possible to extract the german O2 WM6 OS and somehow mix it with the T-Mobile stuff from the WM5 ROM. I know there is a lot information here on the forum, but any hint is nevertheless very appreciated

The new HTC Rom and T-Mobile Compact IV

I would like to install the new Feb 09 ROM from HTC. My Compact IV is from last August and Im just so fed up with the slowness and reception... but I dont want to brick it as I still have a year contract left (thats why never cooked anything) however I feel I could trust the ROM straight from HTC(?) This also seems to pretty straight forward to do.
...but Please let me know
- Is the installer 'PDA Phone ROM Update Utility 3.27.4.3' that comes with it safe to use?
- No need to hardSPL etc.. stuff?
- Will there be any issue as Compact IV is locked to T-Mobile?
Appreciate help... love my compact IV!!
Just to add to my post
I used the S/N in the other thread: ht824gn13492 to download the ROM from HTC. HTC didnt allow to do it with Compact IV's S/N. I hope thats ok... Think the ROM version downloaded is 2.03.405.3.
Thanks
...
I have compact IV too and I am using 2.03 roms (htc and cooked) without problems. You need hardspl to flash these roms (i have olinex 1.93). And I recomend you to flash rom by internal method. Good luck
What do you mean with 'internal method'?
And even if install straight from HTC, still need hardSPL?
Thanks!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2707841&postcount=4035
Read this about flashing from internal storage.Mainly the second paragraph. And I thing that you need hardspl for any other rom except tmobile stock one.
I hope that will help you
hardspl
Thanks for your help. Just one more question: does your last comment mean T-mobile original ROM doesnt require hardSLP. Or better I install it anyway?
Thanks!!
Yes.Only (Tmobile CZ in my case)stock rom from your mobile operator
copilot
I think I will try install straight the official HTC ROM. I read somewhere else thread if updating official ROm you shouldnt use any HardSPL(?) Im not exp with this, and dont want to risk my phone...
I wonder will this affect the Copilot 7 installed by T-Mobile? i know its on the interanl memory (4GB) but were some parts in the phones memory that will be wiped away? dont want to loose it!!!
you cannot install the Official HTC ROM without HardSPL is what gajdik means.
Because your phone is T-Mobile branded (like mine) you can ONLY install T-Mobile ROMS, all others will fail (even official htc roms), to bypass this you must hardspl
Thanks... understand now.
What about Copilot, will I loose it? (does it have something in registry etc that will disable it, as the ROM is not from T-mobile?)
thanks

Yes this is what i mean
I have preinstaled tomtom 7 by tmobile and it works after rom update. But I am not sure about copilot...
Hi all,
I'm new to all this. I've got hold of the new HTC Rom that I want to put on my Compact IV, but can anyone give me a version of Hard SPL to use?
I can't seem to get any of the versions i've found so far to work!
Thanks in advance!
What version of stock rom do you have? And what versions of hardspl you tried?
I've got 1.37.110.3 WWE (the standard one that came from T-Mobile) and i'm trying to flash 2.03.405.3 (the feb 09 update from the HTC website)
I think i've managed to get the Olinex Hard SPL 1.30 onto the phone, but can't seem to make any progress.
Try upgrade to tmobile stock 1.93 rom and then try 1.93OliNex_HSPL_Unsigned from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2312363&postcount=2
This works for me
