Hi all,
I have flashed my Universal several times so far, and every time I did so, I have lost some of my data or had problems with backing them up and restoring them again. What I lost were, for example, all the calendar events and tasks, because AS recognized my phone as a new one and didn't let me restore backup from the "old" one. I managed to successfully backup my SMSes, but when I restored them, each of them was restored twice, and as I never delete messages I send and receive, deleting all the duplicates one by one would take about two eternities. Oh and of course I had to reinstall all my apps and games and lost all the topscores I spent ages making.
Anyway, what I want to say is that while backing up all the data could make problems to an ordinary user, I'm sure that there are some gurus that handle this with no problems, so..could any of them possibly write a tutorial on backing up all the data from important contacts to not-so-importnant-but-still-desired game scores? I know that what I'm asking for is pretty comprehensive and would take some time, but I'm sure that many users would benefit from such article. Thanks in advance to anyone who reads this and decides to reply or help

As a TOTALLY new user this month - I was surprised to find that I can't back up my total configuration to SD card (like I could with my old HP IPAQ)
Does this mean I have to re-install applications from a PC and re-sync from a PC each time the XDA EXEC 'hard resets' ?? (quite often at the moment)
Or has someone got a 'Back up to SD' tool that can restore after a 'Hard reset' ??
OK - I Just found SPB and Sprite - which one for a Novice ??
On a related subject , how can I transfer calendar and contacts from my IPAQ ?

Hi and welcome I use Sprite to backup, it has upgrade mode which allows you to restore after a ROM update, saving me countless hours installing apps and re-configuring my device. SBP only restores to the same ROM

Well so I downloaded some kind of trial version of Sprite backup for WM5 to try it out, but when I tried installing it, at about 30% of the installation process, it told me that "the app is not intended for this type of device" and the installation enden unsuccessfuly. Could someone please post a working CAB file for Sprite backup for WM5 trial? Thanx a lot, Longlife

Um theres no trial version.. What kind of device to you have? You most likely got the PPC version when ur device is actually an SP (smartphone) or vice versa
Please USE the forum search engine and READ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=278037 - it answers ALL your questions.

I have no idea what I downloaded then I tried to backtrack the site I got it from so I could read the decription again, but I didn't find it. Anyway, it was saying that it's for WM5 and as I have HTC Universal running WM5, I thought that is should work. Now, I got SKTools though, which are free and seem pretty cool (I just hope I will be able to restore the backup I made, once i need it )
Can I just point out something, if you use a backup utility, you should only restore that backup to the same ROM build you backed up from.
Otherwise, nearly all of the optimisations in the registry, and included application shortcuts will be lost if you decide to flash a new ROM and restore your backup.
You will be wasting your time reflashing if this is what you're doing.

Umm, sorry if this question is stupid, but what should I use to backup my data when flashing a new ROM then? The idea of getting a new ROM BUT losing all my data doesn't sound very good to me. Thanks,

What is the easiest way to get all of my settings contacts and e-mail settings back on my phone after I do a Rom upgrade?
use a backup utility before you re flash
Will a back up remember all the programs and contacts and mail settings?
I'm by no means an expert, but it was my impression that it was not a good idea to restore a backup onto a new rom. Things are not necesarily in the same place and it can cause problems. That being said i don't really know of any solutions for you.
Haven't tried it yet, but the new Spb Backup v2.0 will restore data between upgrades, don't know about each setting though. On the other hand, if it saves all registry settings and certain files (i.e. ".ini") then everything should be the same.
if you're installing another ROM, you'll do best by reinstalling all your programs. this will ensure that the programs work with the newly installed ROM. i use MS Outlook to backup contacts... backing up email settings depends on what you use for email; if you're using a POP3 account, i suggest you reenter them.... in my opinion, using backup software to reinstall your programs, settings, etc., is risky and may cause unexpected issues. good luck!

Spb Backup has been incredibly buggy for me on my Telus Touch... does it work well for anyone else?
It freezes unless I do this: back up my documents only, turn off the option to create an exe and don't use encryption.
spb back up and ROM upgrade
so,on the telus touch, have you tried the rom upgrade and used spb backup to restore?

Not dumb, there are always questions when you install new software. But, this is another great feature of Spb Backup, it creates self-extracting restore files, with an option to create a copy of the software as well. So install it to your main memory, and have the files kept on your card. Whenever you need to restore, just run the file, you don't even need the app installed. Also includes a desktop sync app.
Rom update
Thanks for the speedy reply,I'm just looking now for any issues doing Rom update with vista 64(Telus tech said there should be no problem, but I've yet to get the same response twice from them)Ok i hope this new update is worth the sweat!

No prob, almost forgot to mention, after restoring the data, your PC will recognize it as it did before. I really like this feature, thought all my data was going to be duplicated.
Hi Guys.
I am trying to upgrade from Elite 2.0 and i am haveing alot of trouble.
I tried teh SPL that was suggested in duttys thread but it got me nowhere so i put in the developers Unsigned SPL. And then it loaded quickly. Everything was fine untill i tried to restore my SMS, Emails, Calander and whatnot with Resco Backup. After I restored I went to view my sms's and it kept resetting TF3D.
I then decided I would try Swiftbaleds and I keep getting the same thing. I have been trying to do a Hard reset for 6the last 10 minutes but it isnt working...probably a big fail on my part...lol
Please help me fix this problem
please use PPCPIMBackup to backup and restore SMS, Emails, Calander instead.. i use that for many different ROM including SwiftBLs, no problem at all.
Am i able to some how use that to restore the files i backup with resco?

You can try to restore Contacts, Calendar, SMS/MMS and emails only. Don't restore any programs or system data and it might works. Cheerz...

Hello,
is it possible to make a image of a running WinMo and restore it after testing some other Roms?
A Program like Norton Ghost?
Thanks
try spb backup
A lot of backup software out there, including SPB Backup as mentioned above. Just try searching under 'backup'. However for these to work you would first need to flash back the rom of which you performed the backup on, i.e. If your using Throys V4.1 and perform a backup and then flash Throys R12. To get back to the orginal you would first need to reflash V4.1 and then perform restore using backup software.
Moved to Themes, Applications and Software forum as not related to rom development
I too would be intrested in an imaging software as my company is currently thinking about using win mob devices and it'll be super-sweet if i didn't have to set them all up on their own!!
Turn phone on, install flashing software, flashing company image, job done.
Arh well. We can dream can't we??

I use spb backup, once you have flashed your rom, installed all apps, done all your personal settings, backup with it.
To restore your phone you just do a hard reset, then browse to a single backup file, click it and spb restores it.
I use it to restore my phone after testing new apps etc.
And when I flash a new rom I do the following :
1. Flash rom
2. Install spb backup and a few safe apps
3. Backup
4. Install rest of apps and register all paid for apps
5. Backup again
6. Change all system settings/personal settings
7. Backup again
8. Re-check settings and make sure everthing works
9. Make final backup
10. Install games
11. Make backup with games on
This way I can easily go back a step if anything goes wrong when tweaking manila etc, and after about a week I delete all backups apart from 9 & 11, so I can easily get rid of any games once I've finished playing them.
You can't deploy a custom image onto multiple handsets with spb backup though, for this you would need sprite/spb cloning software which is considerably more expensive.
Hope I've been of some help, Dave.

Hi guys, I've made a terrible mistake.. please forgive me for that.. I relied on Kies (((
Thank you really a lot for your support! I really don't know who I can ask else about my problem..
I have a S4 mini and as beginner (for Android) I decided to upgrade it with CM12 and Lollipop 5.1, all worked fine but:
As I dis always with Nokia, I was confident that a backup manager from the brand-house was the best way to backup, save for the future and manage contacts in our PC, I installed the first manager it appear to me as "it", Kies 3.2. It worked because the previous FW was 4.2, it asked to upgrade to Smart Switch but I refused to do, wtf I just needed save the contacts... and I couldn't suppose how "complicate your life" are these uncomplete softwares.
After upgrade Kies showed that with new FW I need to upgrade to Smart Switch and after Smart Switch showed that this phone is not compatible (????). Trying use Kies 2.6 to open manualli the file spb (to export them on vcf) it can't read the spb file made by Kies 3.2.. (???) and opening with hex editor the spb file itself I saw it is encrypted/compressed and impossible to extract manually any information. Wow!
Now how can I restore contacts?? Smart Switch doesn't start without a phone connected (and by the way, I also don't know if it has a contact manager in the end!), the phone with it doesn't work (maybe bcause it founds an unbelievable Lollipop on a S4 mini?), as i searched there are no android applications who can read/load spb or other Windows external softwares..
How could I extract the contact names from this .spb now?
Any chance to make Smart Switch see the phone?
Thank you a lot!
If I was in your position I would restore the phone to the old firmware you were using before, and then restore contracts back, then use "another" software to backup contacts. Then once you have a "fresh" backup, then install cm12 back again.
Sounds long but it's all I personally can think of. If files are encrypted nothing but the original software will open them...
Thank you for reply.
I have some questons. Is it possible that spb made by Kies 3.2 can't be read on 2.6? Does it has sense?
If I'll use another samsung phone, can I restore there the backup and save contact from that one?
There is any way to force Smart switch to connect to a CM12 device?
I already configured it and start from the beginning may kill me :/
Thank you!
To shorten the prosedure and keep your current installation intact. Isnt a solution to make a nandroid backup of current cm12.1 in the recovery. Install an old kitkat version, restore your contacts etcetera. Sync them to gmail. Then restore your nandroid and sync with Gmail?
